A1 Cable Solutions makes the Pedal Power, a rugged patented
display that teaches energy conservation concepts in a physical
way. Participants produce and consume their own energy by
pedaling a bicycle-powered generator to power different
electrical loads. Designed and built to be portable and reliable,
the Pedal Power travels easily, sets up quickly and is rugged
enough to withstand heavy usage with minimal maintenance for
years. Complete with up to three types of lights (incandescent,
CFL and LED) and several electric appliances, the Pedal Power
display uses any size bicycle 20 inches and larger so that
everybody from adults to small children can participate. This
user-friendly display is a popular addition to any public event but
also comes with K-12 lesson plans that make it great for
structured classroom presentations.

costly individual power systems. By reducing the unit price of
sensor modules, an energy-efficient intelligent communication
grid can be implemented using this technology for a realistic
cost without the negative long-term environmental impact of
batteries.

Visit Mark Bolding, Andrew Roznovsky, Gregory Carter, and Tim
Davis, students from Texas A&M, Electronics and

addresses the “last mile” issues for smart grid connection to end
users. The students worked to design a cost-effective capacitor
bank controller that allows two-way communications with a
SCADA control station. The current cost of such devices in the
market is about $1,500-$2,500/unit. The students have been
working with College Station Utilities, in Texas, to design a
device in the range of $200-$500/per unit. Communication will
be accomplished using a standardized protocol, such as
MODBUD or DNP and each device must be uniquely
addressable.
