A tribute to our founder
Dr. N. Mahalingam
Dr.
N.
Mahalingam,
Founder
Chairman
of
Kumaraguru College of Technology strived to live
a life of values and ideas with purpose and vision
to impact the world. The enigmatic life merged into
the light on October 2, 2014, the birth anniversary
of Mahatma Gandhi. Until the last moment, Dr. NM
was doing what he believed and envisioned talking
about Saint Vallalar’s philosophy. Throughout his life
Dr. NM carried the twin torches of Gandhian values
and Vellalar’s way of life. It is then divine grace that
he was led into eternal light on the day he celebrated
both of them.
Your vision. Our path.

The Chairman
on Excellence
Kumaraguru College of Technology is the brain
child of our founder ArutchelvarDr.N.Mahalingam.
The institution is three decades old and has earned
a reputation for itself. There is a good demand for
admissions and equally many leading companies
in the core and service sectors prefer to absorb
our candidates in their organisations. This apart,
the institution enjoys tremendous goodwill among
the general public and is rated among the best
institutions in our state of Tamil Nadu, South India.
However, we are not resting on our laurels. We
are conscious of the challenges ahead and we
have a commitment to make Kumaraguru College
of Technology the number one institution not only
in this region but in the nation as well. All this
requires the support and goodwill of our alumni
who are down spread all over the world and
number around 20,000.
in this period. However many challenges continue
to confront the nation.
The major advantage for India today is the
demographic profile. Almost 65% of our population
are in the age group of 22-30 years. Much depends
on our ability to empower them through education
to emerge as enlightened citizens who will enrich
the nation.
Along with the academic programmes, efforts have
been taken to develop their personality to make
them holistic in nature, sensitive to social needs.
The management, its 400 plus faculty ably
supported by a similar number of supporting staff
are engaged in transforming Kumaraguru College
of Technology into an institution of excellence, true
to the vision of our founder.
Initiatives are being taken to step up the activities
and ensure employability of our candidates. The
outcome based education as stipulated by the
National Assessment and Accreditation Council is
now being introduced and in the course of time,
our students will match global standards.
The Indian Republic is now close to seven
decades. Phenomenal progress has been done

The Correspondent
on Staying Relevant in a Changing World
The place of education in the traditional Indian
context has always been accorded the highest
pedestal. Combined with cultural traditions such
as family values, faith and belief systems and
commerce, education defines individual roles and
their place in shaping larger society. The purpose
of education is therefore, not limited to providing
security or success; it is to ensure that character
and principles are upheld and followed at all times.
We have been witness to the dynamics of change
in businesses as well. Family enterprises like ours
have had to constantly reinvent ourselves amidst
the onslaught of larger players. The scenario for
larger businesses is no different with the increasing
coming together of geographical boundaries and
markets, businesses are now delving deeper
into identifying their DNA in order to differentiate
themselves.
‘Character is life’ defines the larger purpose of
Kumaraguru College of Technology. 30 years ago,
Founder Chairman Dr. N. Mahalingam envisioned
an institution that would retain this fundamental
truth in its pursuit of excellence. Dr. K. Arumugam,
one of the principal architects of the institution,
transformed the vision of Dr. N. Mahalingam and
helped build the edifice on which all growth has
followed.
Higher education must take these challenges into
account. In order to stay relevant to the industry
scenario, institutions that do not foresee where
their current path will take them are in grave danger.
As inheritors of this legacy, we now have to work
very hard to translate the vision and uphold all
the values that KCT stands for. In today’s rapidly
homogenising world, the lines that define each of
the fundamental principles are steadily blurring.
Disruptive changes threaten to undermine the
true purpose of education—to remain relevant to
changing contexts, to empower individual thought
and impact collective consciousness.
If we hope to play a dominant role in the global
economy through digital, manufacturing or
commercial revolutions, we must first get back to
the drawing board and relook the way we have
been looking at higher education.
For KCT, this means building our unique footprint,
using this strong foundation of ‘character’ to stand
up and stand apart.

Amazing
Amazing
Potential
Potential
The world today is in an extraordinary phase of its
existence. Advancements that the human race has
made in science and technology in communication,
manufacturing, materials, healthcare, transport
and construction are truly remarkable.
Much of this in the last two centuries was due to
the commitment and perseverance with which
visionary academic institutions pursued the quest
to help the progress of mankind. The academic
study and research by the Staff and Students in
these citadels of knowledge and wisdom have
been legendary world over.
The world today certainly has progressed but the
striking fact seems to be the regression of aspects
like environment and the reality of poverty and lack
of opportunity to progress for millions.
I see an amazing potential for the multitude of
institutions globally to entrench themselves into
finding ways to make the planet and its inhabitants
exist well.
India is in a phase where it has crossed many
strides and many more harsh realities exist in this
developing nation.
Kumaraguru College of Technology (KCT) since
1984 has been in the pursuit of impact and
excellence. Today the institution with its 7000 staff
and students are exploring ways to enhance their
knowledge and persue research for the benefit of
society and progress of the economy.
The potential for India and it’s youth are truly
limitless. The developed World looks at India as a
market and the developing world looks at it as a
solution. KCT built on the foundation of its visionary
founder is working to tap on this potential.
KCT is an institution that looks at the holistic
development of an individual and the college offers
a plenty of scope for enhancement and evolution
of the mind, body and spirit. “Character is life” is
the motto of the institution.
Moving towards the future KCT dedicates itself to
become an institution of excellence and impact.
It would be done with its resources, capabilities,
and partnerships with businesses, institutions and
the state. Global partnerships remain an important
aspect as the potential is being built on.
Realizing the potential within each individual along
with the strengths that exist in the ecosystem will
be the aspiration for the next decade.

on Setting the Culture
Kumaraguru College of Technology is a 31 year
old autonomous institution visioned by Arutselvar
Padma Bhushan Dr. N. Mahalingam. KCT has
been accredited multiple times. The institution
was envisaged to impact on social improvement
through education on the border western Tamil
Nadu.
The next generation is built on strong fundamental
education, sports and volunteering social activities.
The students participate in all these activities and
that sets the culture of students at KCT. Needless
to say, the facilities are available for students to
involve themselves in these activities on 24 X 7
basis.
The institution was started with the blessings of
Ramanandha Adigalar and spirituality was always
intertwined in the activities of the institution. More
than 20,000 Alumni of KCT are contributing to the
development, progress of the societies across the
world. KCT as always, and will be emphasizing its
motto “Character is life”.
This is also the only institution in this country
where Mahatma Gandhi Study Centre and Swami
Vivekananda Study Centre are established. Both
the centres are part of curriculum of every student.
The student take active part in character building
and nation building. There are many opportunities
for the students and faculties to immerse and
develop our nation through multi various activities.
The emphasis, thus is on the nation building.

research work on removal dyes ON 25 LAKHS GRANTS
Textile industries in Tirupur support nearly 10 lakh people. Most Textile industries in Tiruppur depend on
the dyed fabrics. Colouring of the fresh fabrics is done in dyeing industries.
Textile dyeing industries are
one of most polluting industries in India. Removal dyes from textile dyeing effluents is one of the major
problem especially in Tirupur. Textile dyeing effluent generated is classified into 2 categories i) dyebath
effluent, and ii) wash liquor effluents. Honourable Courts had directed State and Union Governments
to implement zero discharge of waste water from textile units in Tirupur. There is no viable technology
available to treat this textile dyeing effluents.
Dept. of Biotechnology had received grants (24.94 Lakhs) from Department of Science and Technology,
New Delhi, to carry out the research work on removal dyes in wash liquor effluents by solvent extraction
using multistage stage centrifugal extractor (MCE). WE have successfully removed the dyes from the
effluents and scale-up studies (pilot-plant and Industrial levels) have to be carried before it is taken up
the industry.
We have also developed a technology for complete removal of dyes in both i) dyebath effluent, and
ii) wash liquor effluents using hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC) matrices. This process is
applied for Indian patent. If State or Central Governments bears the cost of matrices, pollution caused
the dyes can be eradicated. Though HIC matrices is costly, but repeated use will bring out a permanent
solution to Tirupur pollution problem.
To solve this pollution problem, we are closely associated with Perundurai Common Effluent Treatment
Plant (PCETP), located in Industrial Growth Centre, SIPCOT, Perundurai. We have received Rs.25 lakhs
from DST, Government of India to carry out collaborative research work on textile dyeing effluent treatment.

Founder’s Day is an occasion to remember the inspiring life of Arutchelvar Dr. N. Mahalingam; emulate his high thinking
and simple living, and work towards realising his vision for an empowered, socially conscious humanity.
The Founders’ Day for the year 2015 was both a moment to remember the great ideals of the founder, celebrate his
vision and also take concrete steps to fulfil the vision he set for this institution.
The Mahatma Gandhi Scholarship Awards
Arutchelvar valued the pursuit of merit, perseverance and achievement, greatly in students and was especially keen
on nurturing these attributes in them. It was in this light that he conceived the idea of Mahatma Gandhi Scholarship

iQube is a Technology Incubation Centre in KCT to help students build prototypes from their ideas and hence have a
startup company to bring their prototypes as completed & reliable products. In order to prepare the students to come
up with such projects and companies, a consulting/ mentoring platform is necessary. We call this platform as iQube
How does iQube benefit KCT?
In short term,
iQube will mentor the students of KCT to do their projects by own rather than approaching some project centre.
(There are about 600 students (3rd year and 4th year of circuit branches) who are supposed to do project as a part of
their academics. At least about 400 of these 600 go to project centres. Among these 400, about 300 have will to do
their projects by their own, but due to lack of knowledge and mentoring, they obviously give up. iQube has taken the
challenge of working on these 300 or little lower than that to give them necessary knowledge and mentoring so they
come up with their own projects which is very appreciable both from the academics and industry perspective)
iQube conducts training Programmes that benefits the students to learn modern technologies. (As required by
Industries and growing market)
In long term,
iQube is going to be a Technology, Innovation and R&D hub open for anyone from anywhere who can
•
Setup a company inside • Propose an idea and request for a prototype (if the idea is worth-enough)
•
Work as an intern in their area of interest with other engg department person
•
Get/Give training, mentoring • Showcase their Innovation and get Recognition
•
Use the resources available and do Research on their proposed idea
which in one way or the other is obviously credible to KCT.
