Training Options at Avon City Ford
AUTOMOTIVE
Avon City Ford Training Services is an NZQA and MITO (Motor Industry Training Organisation)
accredited Training Provider. We have the support from the Southern Institute of Technology and
we use a range of their automotive unit standard learning and assessment material as well as our
own. We deliver Automotive Training to support schools with their student achievement for NCEA
Level 1 & 2. STAR and/or Gateway funding can be used for our programmes.
It is important that we work closely with young people in year 10 to try and identify those students
who are interested in a vocational direction they are interested in. It is important these students
can experience STAR funded taster courses in the career they are interested in. We can give
these students direction and subject advice for when they enter into year 11 (NCEA Level 1).
Technology, compliance and processes has had a significant impact on all trades so students
need to have a high level of Literacy and Numeracy as well as a good understanding of science.
We collectively need to work to engage and keep students at school longer so they can achieve
NCEA Level 2, this will meet the Government’s target of 85% of 18 years olds achieving Level 2
or equivalent by 2017. We are trying to create an Academy to meet the demands of industry,
learners in fact all of our stake holders. We all need to come up with ideas, strategies to introduce
new concepts, remove old curriculum and/or relook and revamp current curriculum to ensure it is
working well. Students require a clear pathways to carry on with when they decide to leave
school to enter the Tertiary Education Sector this is where a robust and supportive curriculum is
so important to meet students and employer’s needs.
The Government has changed the criteria for Youth Guarantee Courses, we have an industry
recognised Youth Guarantee Automotive Training course and this is a FREE course for students
attending. The aim of the course is to raise the educational achievement of 16 to 19 year olds
to a Level 2 Tertiary Qualification. The trainees will be working towards the National
Certificate in Motor Industry Foundation Skills (Level 1) & Entry Skills (Level 2). Literacy and
numeracy is integrated into the programme and if the learner requires extra help we will
endeavour to support them.
CDX
This is a comprehensive on-line Automotive Training Programme; this interactive automotive
training program introduces students to the principles and applications of automotive education. It
also equips tutors with a complete set of easy-to-use course materials. This innovative training
program can be used to support the automotive programs that are delivered by Avon City Ford
and to support the students with the learning of their unit standard modules they have to
complete as part of the course.
Schools that have students participating on selected Training programs will be given a log on to
support the student or a class the course is being delivered to, any extra log in that the school
may want will come at a minimal cost. Contact Phil Hayes

GATEWAY PROGRAMME
As a Gateway Training Provider we will support the Gateway Co-ordinator and the student in their
work experience placement and in their achievement of industry unit standards. The schools
selection criteria process needs to be robust to ensure that the students can complete the work to
an acceptable level within the time frame specified.
At the start of the programme it is recommended the students come into Avon City Ford’s
workshop to complete the Introduction to the Workplace Course. This is a Three Day - 7 Credit
Programme, where the students will experience working in a Motor Vehicle Dealership and
complete the unit standards (listed on the opposite page). While the students are here this
will give the tutor a chance to see how well the student handled the theory work set for them and
give them an idea of their practical ability.
During the course we will discuss with each trainee the best option that will suit their skills and
guide them to a career option that will better suit them. We will send you a Training Plan that will
have the students list of unit standard work books that they will complete while on the
programme. We can also assist you in placing students into work experience if you are having
trouble finding a host employer.
When the student has been placed into Work Experience
Contact Phil Hayes, so that he has the students and employers contact details on his records so
that he can support the employer/supervisor through the 21858 verification procedure, if required.
This unit standard assessment will also be sent to you with the Trainee Induction Form to give the
host employer with the instructions on how to complete the assessment tool as it is an
observation assessment.
We will send out the Learners Training Plan to the Co-ordinator, this plan has the unit standard
achievement, version, level and credit. It also gives you a date that unit 21858 has to be handed
in for assessment

STAR PROGRAMMES
We also conduct a range of STAR (Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resource) Courses for
Automotive and Driving. We can tailor make a course to meet your specific training
requirements, or you can choose a course from the following range:
AUTOMOTIVE:
We conduct a short four day block course designed for students to have a taster introduction
to the automotive industry. It is designed for students who are interested in the automotive
industry or who want to gain some practical knowledge and experience The courses requires
minimum of 6 students but only allows a maximum of 12 students. The school can book a
time slot to suit their students, but if a school only has a few students interested we will put
together a course combining with other schools to make up the numbers. We pride
ourselves on putting courses together quickly so don’t hesitate to contact us early.
We have a range of different full time courses that are designed to suit the student’s interest,
school curriculum with time restrictions and the school budget. These courses have a range
of Level 1 & 2 unit standards and these contribute to the National Certificate in Foundation
Skills in Automotive Level 1 as well as National Certificate to Entry into Automotive Level 2.
We want to establish an Automotive Academy this would be a great opportunity for students to
gain an insight into what is required from them at school and what the industry needs in respect
to education towards a pathway forward in their chosen area. The information, knowledge and
practical experience gathered by the students can be pivotal in making the right decision on what
career the student wants to pursue and when students leave school they have a clear pathway
into Tertiary education or into apprenticeship’s.
The purpose of the academy is to introduce students to the automotive industry and to complete
the practical assessments within a functioning dealership. Students will be exposed to a range of
trades such as Light Vehicle and Commercial Vehicle, Motorcycle Servicing and Repairs,
Collision Repair, Automotive Paint Refinishing, Automotive Parts Sales, Grooming and Vehicle
detailing.
. academy’s aim is to reinforce the importance
The
of gaining knowledge and qualifications in literacy,
numeracy and science to show the students where
they can apply and use this knowledge. Working
with the students and the school we are supporting
these students while they find a purpose for their
learning so that they can engage more in their
education and future. The course can run in
partnership with those schools that have Gateway
Programmes in place.
DRIVING:
Just a reminder we have had to close down our Driving school after the February 2011
earthquake as there was no demand after the event.
We are only delivering the Learner Licence Course in 2013 but if you require Practical Driver
Training for your students please contact us as we can contract someone to do the work for
you.

VEHICLE MAINTENANCE COURSE
This course has been created for those students who want to maintain and look after their
vehicle for safe motoring and/or for work. This is a good base knowledge course before
students can go into our Introduction to the Automotive Courses that we also deliver. The
course covers the basics workings of the motor vehicle and its legislative requirements,
service and minor repairs of the motor vehicle and/or light commercial vehicle.
This has a lot of practical tasks and assessments attached to this course to make it more
interesting to kinaesthetic learners. It allows these learners to experience and gain some
knowledge in maintaining their own car or possibly a future employer’s work vehicle.

Introduction to Automotive Course
This is a full year programme that needs to be completed by the end of October before
students sit exams. We feel this programme will benefit the Year 11 & 12 students who are
interested in automotive, who want to learn new skills in maintaining a vehicle or are looking
at a career in the Automotive Industry.
The automotive unit standards are a distance learning package, the class can have a teacher
looking after them, but the assessments have to be carried out by Avon City Ford Training
Services. The students will need to come to Avon City Ford Training Facility to perform the
practical tasks set for them in the unit standards being studied. We will come to the school to
provide support for your teacher and to assess theory unit standards.
Once the students have completed a range of work booklets each term and have achieved
unit 16113, they will come to Avon City Ford Dealership for a Four Day practical training to
complete and be assessed on the unit standards listed below. The practical block course will
need to be scheduled during the year so schools will need to book spaces to suit the school
curriculum and events. The bookings will work on first come first serve basis.
UNIT STANDARDS
We will provide work booklets and marking schedules for the automotive unit standards for
the teachers who will be supervising the class. These booklets are self paced, Distance
Learning material from SIT that are designed for students to meet their learning needs. Avon
City Ford Training services will perform all theory and practical assessments.

How it will work:
This course can be run by a teacher at the school. Avon City Ford will be there to support the
school and teacher with the delivery and achievement of the automotive unit standard
modules at set times of the Term. We will supply the automotive work booklets, these are
distance learning modules that will allow the students to work at their own pace and the
teacher can assist the students to complete the theory content. We will supply a marking
copy for the teacher to use when students have completed the work booklets and to assist
with those students who cannot find the answers to the questions asked. We will also supply
skill developments and/or revision sheets for the students and answers for the teachers.
Once the students have completed a range of work booklets and have achieved unit
standard 16113, they will come to Avon City Ford Dealership for a Four Day practical
training in a set week in each term that suits the school, to complete skill developments and
to be assessed on the unit standards they are studying.
A maximum of 12 students can attend the block courses. We have a tutor to student ratio of
1 to 6 to ensure that students participating in the course achieve and they are safe while
working with the tools and equipment.
We will continue to support the school until the end of the year, if required, to complete and
assess the other automotive/motor body booklets as required. If you would like to discuss
this programme, please don’t hesitate to contact us on 348-4129 ext 807 or email Phil Hayes

This course is designed for learners who want to obtain their Learners Drivers Licence. The
unit standards delivered on the course explain the requirements when progressing through
the stages of testing for Class1 and the requirements for licence classes beyond that.
The course also covers knowledge of the traffic law so people can identify legal implications
and responsibilities in relation to other road users.
The students will work through two unit standards:
3462 - Demonstrate knowledge of traffic law for the purpose of safe driving.
Credit 3)
(Level 2;
17563 - Demonstrate knowledge of the New Zealand Graduated Driver Licensing System
(GDLS) (Level 2; Credit 3)
At the conclusion of the course participants will be able to sit and obtain
Drivers Learners Licence this can be sat at any AA Office or you can arrange a testing officer
to come to the school.
The cost of this course is $190.00 per person inclusive of GST
Restricted and Full Licence Driving Lessons
Since the September and February earthquakes and when the law was introduced in August
when the age went from 15 to 16 years of age we experienced a dramatic down turn of
business of people wanting or needing Driver Training. We have had to suspend all Driver
Training and Defensive Driver Training until we have enough demand to restart our Driver
Programmes.
If you require Practical Driver Training for your students please contact us as we have
arranged a Driving Instructor who we can do the driver training for you.

Automotive Training
Dates: 10 Feb 2014 – 28 Nov 2014
Holidays:
27 June 2014 – 14 July 2014
This is a 40 week full time course.
Hours:
8:30am – 3:00pm Monday to Thursday
8.30am to 12.00pm Friday
Learners: 16 – 19 Year Olds
Prerequisites: Students who have NO formal qualifications or have completed NCEA
Level 1 and/or NCEA Level 2 are eligible to apply for this course. Trainees will
need to have a positive attitude to learning and working with the ambition to
succeed in the automotive industry. A neat and tidy appearance is expected,
as learners will be working in a real work environment within Avon City Fords
Dealership. Holding a Restricted or a Full driver’s licence is a real
ADVANTAGE. All prospective trainees are required to come in for an
interview to ensure their suitability for the course.
Features: The aim of the course is to raise the educational achievement of 16 to 19 year
olds to a level 2 Tertiary Qualification. The trainees will be working towards
the National Certificate in Motor Industry Foundation Skills (Level 1) & Entry
Skills (Level 2). Literacy and numeracy is integrated into the programme and if
the learner requires extra help we will endeavour to support them. We also
use the CDX Interactive automotive web base training system that is mainly a
visual, audio and interactive programme to support the trainees with their
learning.
•
This is an automotive focused training course; trainees will be working
within an automotive dealership and are expected to be able to work in
groups at their own pace. The course expects a high level of unit
standard achievement.
•
There is a good mix of visual, audio and practical learning that supports
the theory aspects of the course but trainees still have to be able to
read and write at a good level.
•
The National Certificate in Motor Industry - Entry Skills (Level 2) will
enable trainees to enter into employment in an automotive workshop or
a specialist vehicle servicing franchise.
•
The level 2 qualification completed by the trainee can lead into an
apprenticeship and the unit standards that you gain in this certificate
cross over to MITO’s National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive
Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (Level 3 & 4)

If you have students that have a clear direction, an interest in or are not sure if they want a
career in the Automotive Industry, we would be happy to interview them. This interview will
give them an idea of the course content, an opportunity to meet the tutors and find out what
will be expected of them while on the course.
If students are interested in working with cars or machinery, enjoy working with the different
specialist tools to strip and reassemble engines, gearboxes, test electrical circuits, learn
some basic engineering and welding. If students want to gain knowledge, skills and an
industry recognised qualification, then this course will give them the training they need to help
them to find employment in the automotive industry and/or go onto further training.
