Nick DeSalvo, Sales Account Manager
USA & Canada, Renfert USA
SANDSTORM EXPERT
Q: What should a lab look for in terms of
a warranty on abrasive sandblasters?
A: The life of a sandblaster depends
on several factors: quality of design,
routine maintenance, and the manufacturer’s commitment to servicing the unit.
Renfert stands behind their sandblasters
by offering a 3-year warranty on all of its
models.
Q: How can you extend the life of a
sandblaster?
A: When choosing a sandblaster, think
about its design, and how easy or difficult
it will be to maintain its optimal working
performance. Blockage and clogging
within the blasting lines are not only
frustrating, but they can incapacitate
the sandblaster. Renfert’s sandblasters
feature replaceable cartridges within the
blasting tanks. Regular cleaning of blasting lines will ensure consistent flow of
blasting media. This maintenance, along
with the use of readily available spare
parts, can extend the life of the sandblaster significantly.
Q: How important is maintaining a
consistent air/sand flow rate?
A: A consistent air/sand flow is vital to
achieving optimal results. The design of
the mixing chamber is crucial to ensuring
an optimal air/sand mix, providing reproducible, high-quality results. Because
of its mixing chamber design, the flow
of material from a Renfert sandblaster
remains consistent regardless of how full
the tank may be, with minimal to no preor post-flow leakage.
A high-quality and economical blasting system for
moderate-to-heavy production. Low-maintenance media
flow system virtually eliminates wasteful downtime and lowers maintenance costs.
• “Easy Fill” tanks hold 4 lb. of media
• Exclusive non-clogging flow design with automatic air/sand purging system

DUST COLLECTORS
TIPS FROM THE EXPERTS
CRITICAL DECISIONS IN
CHOOSING A DUST COLLECTOR
Dust collectors come in different types and
performance standards, but some factors may
take precedence when deciding which may be
right for your laboratory.
Perhaps the biggest differentiators among
dust collector models, according to Gregg Miller,
Sales and Marketing Manager, Vaniman, involve
the maintenance required for various types, the
amount (and type) of dust that the equipment
must remove from the air, and the noise that the
dust collector adds to the work environment.
Brush versus brushless motor. A key to
dust collector maintenance is the motor: is it
a brush-type or brushless motor? The former
often requires regular replacement of the motor
brushes, and this may be easily performed at a
lab with full-time maintenance personnel. If the
brushes are not replaced, the motor will eventually fail. A brushless motor can perform for long
durations with relatively little maintenance.
Silence is golden. “Noise level must be
considered when choosing a dust collector,”
advised Miller. For instance, labs that need
dust collectors with greater amounts of suction generally have larger motors, which can,
in many cases, generate greater noise. Will
the technicians who need a dust collector be
in one large room or in a number of smaller
rooms? Does the lab need a centralized
system or one dust collector for each work
station? Will the dust collectors be operating
everyday, all day? This is a very complex ques-
tion for most labs, said Miller. “Certainly, there
is no best answer for everyone’s laboratory.”
Clearing the air. Another critical aspect
of maintenance involves the filtration system.
“If the filter is not changed as frequently as
necessary, airflow to the motor is decreased.
This can shorten the motor’s life,” Miller
stated. This is one reason why “pre-filtration”
can be a good idea. A pre-filtration unit can
be added to any dust collector, which “cuts
down the need to change the filters.”
“The quality of the air in the workplace is
determined by the ability to capture the dust in
the areas it’s being created,” said Miller. “What
people really want in a dust collector is something that they can plug in, hook up, not mess
with it too much, and that’s not too loud.”

5 Steps to Successful
Laboratory Design
Dental Arte Inc.
Planning a comfortable, efficient,
and profitable place in which to work is not difficult.
Whether you are planning for a new lab or expanding your current facility,
you will need to follow some basic guidelines, which we have provided for you.
Zahn’s lab-planning specialist is ready to answer all of your individual questions
with regard to laboratory design, cost, financing, and installation.
Handler
1. Understanding Your Present
and Future Needs
Before you can weigh the pros and cons of purchasing
one piece of furniture versus another, you need to gather
all of the data that will help you in your selections. Our
Laboratory Planning Specialists will take you through
this process. They will help you with your priorities and
assist you when speaking with a sales specialist.
This will make it possible for you to receive the precise
answers needed for you to make the right decisions.
NevinLabs
2. Creating a Concept of
Your Work Space
Shopping for lab furniture is a little like shopping for a
new car. It is helpful to have a clear understanding of
what your needs are, even before you consider
individual manufacturers and their products. The next
step is to make a rough drawing of your working space
and identify the way work should flow in your new
lab. If you have not selected a location for your new
lab, this may help you in choosing an adequate facility.
Prepare a drawing of the way you would like to see
your lab (e.g., partitions, size of rooms, work flow, etc.),
and let Zahn assist you in creating a computer-aided
design through one of our manufacturer partners.

manufacturers’ product lines and select the ones
that best match your needs and budget. Here is
where Zahn’s Planning Team can save you time.

Ottawa Dental Laboratory, Chicago, IL by NevinLabs
4. The Budget vs. Reality
It’s a fact of life that without proper financing or other
financial resources, a dream lab will never become a reality.
Your accountant, banker, or Zahn Dental can be valuable
advisors in this area. Zahn Dental offers a variety of financing
packages for both the short and long term, and will be happy
to provide details. Remember: more information about your
requirements up front will greatly reduce unexpected costs.
Zahn Dental will be happy to calculate a “Best Rate” on any
and all furniture, equipment and merchandise for your lab.
Daymude Laboratory, Glendale, AZ by NevinLabs
5. Installation
So much planning and time goes into the selection and layout of
furniture and equipment that it is unfortunate that sometimes not
enough consideration is given to the costs associated with proper
installation and timely deliveries. Review the installations checklist
and review local building ordinances. Zahn’s experiences in setting up
labs just like yours can help you minimize downtime and meet your
important operating schedules.

TIPS FROM THE EXPERTS
USING WATER TO KEEP
DOWN THE DUST
Not only are today’s dental handpieces excellent at polishing and finishing restorations in
materials like silica and zirconium, but they
are also highly efficient at creating dangerous
hazards in the laboratory—silica, zirconium,
and alloy dusts that can be inhaled by technicians and cause serious respiratory problems.
For example, silicosis is a debilitating, sometimes fatal, yet preventable occupational lung
disease caused by inhaling respirable crystalline silica dust. Blasting, grinding, and polishing these restoration materials are activities
performed daily by technicians in the dental
laboratory.
As a result, the Occupational Safety and
Health Administration (OSHA) has focused
on effective dust collection and removal as a
requirement for the safety of lab technicians
and other lab employees.
16
dentallabproducts
September Supplement 2011
OSHA urges dental laboratories to take the
following basic safety steps:
• Use local exhaust ventilation (hoods) properly
to minimize the generation of dust and fumes
when working with beryllium-containing alloys
• Use HEPA vacuums to clean equipment and
the floor around the work area
• Prohibit the use of compressed air to clean
parts or working surfaces
• If a wet mop is used for cleaning, do not
leave a film of dust on the floor after drying
• Monitor employee exposures to airborne
beryllium dust and fume, using personal sampling techniques on a regular basis, to ensure
that beryllium exposures are below the OSHA
exposure limits and are as low as feasible
• Limit the number of workers who have
access to areas where beryllium-containing
alloys are being cast or fabricated
• Use appropriate respiratory protection
Another well-known method for containing airborne dust particles is the use of a fine
spray of water droplets at the point of dust
generation. In Europe, workplace regulators
have taken an extra step in dust avoidance
and elimination: They require the use of water
spray in dental laboratories to hold down
dust particles, making it easier to keep the air
clear in the workplace, according to Arthur
Mateen, Branch Manager of Bien-Air USA. It
makes sense to take the above precautions
but also to look for water spray features on
the equipment that generates the dust. That is
one of the reasons Bien-Air built a large water
reservoir into its STS Trimmer handpiece.
“Bien-Air’s lab handpiece with water spray,
the STS Trimmer, is an industry standard in
Europe,” said Mateen. “With the introduction
of a larger water tank and integrated water
spray control, we are confident this unit will
become a standard in U.S. dental labs.”

TIPS FROM THE EXPERTS
MUST-HAVE ACCESSORIES
FOR YOUR LATHE
“The Handler Red Wing lathe has been
a part of the dental lab since the 1920s,”
said Rick LaDuca, President of Handler
Red Wing International. “Some of our
working lathes date from the 1950s,” but
this very cost-effective piece of equipment is not very useful without the accessories needed to perform its intended
dental functions—polishing and grinding
of prosthetics.
The problem is that many purchasers don’t realize that most lathes require
attachments. “The majority of the dental community polishes with pumice,”
explained LaDuca. “In order to do that,
dlpmagazine.com
you need a buffing spindle to hold the
buffing wheel, on the left side of the lathe.
In addition, the Occupational Safety and
Health Administration requires a splash
hood. Those two left-side attachments
allow you to polish restorations with pumice and other polishing compounds.”
The right side of the Red Wing lathe is
used for dry operations (cutting, grinding,
sanding) and will also need attachments,
such as burs and mandrels. The user will
also need a chuck changer; to increase
productivity, the Red Wing has a Quick
Chuck Changer, which enables users to
switch 3/32” and 1/4” burs and mandrels
while the lathe is running. “For example,
if the operator is cutting a denture with
a cutting disk,” said LaDuca, “he or she
can then put on a sanding sleeve without stopping the motor (by pulling down
a handle, which opens the jaws of the
chuck to allow exchanging of burs).”
LaDuca pointed out that purchasers
would be wise to consider a version of
the lathe that comes complete—with all
of the attachments needed for the right
and left sides. This version, such as
Handler Red Wing model 16B, means
that all the accessories and safety
equipment come with the basic lathe.
He favors this model, because it counters any concerns that the customer is
missing the right attachment, and “it
pays for itself in no time.”

STEAM CLEANERS
TIPS FROM AN EXPERT
MAXIMIZING THE LIFE OF
YOUR STEAM CLEANER
Generally, in the lab, it is the responsibility of
the first person in the building in the morning to turn it on and fill it with water. Although
not running full time, it must be ready for use
when needed. The last person leaving the
building usually turns it off. Seems simple,
but steam cleaners are sent back to the factory for preventable repairs. We asked Nicole
Palladino, Sales Manager, US & Canada, Kerr
Dental Laboratory Products (makers of Touch
Steam), what she views as the top 3 mistakes
that will shorten the life of a steam cleaner.
1. Using nondistilled water: “The minerals and contaminants in the water vary by re-
gion, and can be recipe for disaster in wearing out the unit’s components prematurely,”
said Palladino. “You must use only distilled
water in the unit. This single action will extend
the life of your steam cleaner regardless of
make or model.”
2. Running it 24/7: For safety purposes
and to reduce wear and tear on all steamers,
units should be powered down at the end of
the night, and powered up at the beginning
of the work day, and not left unattended.
Steamers should not run overnight or when
the lab is closed. Palladino cautioned that the
resulting heat build-up can cause premature
wear in the heating element, cap, and cap
gaskets, and shorten the life of the fuses.
3. Twisting the gun handle: The gun
handle (where the steam stream emanates)
and hose contains wires, regulators, and tubing components. Not too dissimilar to a gas
station fueling hose, which contains wires
and regulators and is not meant to be twisted
excessively, Palladino said, “The gun handle
and hose of a steam cleaner can be damaged with even a little twisting.”
She also offered an important tip: People
think that if the steam cleaner cap leaks a bit
on top, the cap, which is expensive, will need
to be replaced. The problem is more likely
the gasket, which is inexpensive. “Changing
the cap gasket regularly can save money and
prolong the life of the unit.”

The principal objective of vibrator use in dental applications is
to reduce or eliminate bubbles out of the plaster for easy pouring into a mold. Bruce Leibick, Sales Director, for Buffalo Dental
Manufacturing Inc, emphasized that the two top priorities in vibrator construction is to remove these bubbles, but do it without
generating a great deal of noise.
Typically, a flask of plaster will be sitting on top of the vibrator,
“and it is important that the vibrator include a lip to help stabilize
the flask,” said Leibick. Rubber mounts with suction cups also
help stabilize the vibrator, and reduce sound levels.
When asked about the other important features that a vibrator
should have, Leibick commented, “Solid construction, durability,
and it helps when they’re made in the USA, because that usually
means better quality control.”
The durability of Buffalo’s vibrators is remarkable, he said. “In
the dental practice environment, many dentists end up selling
their vibrator with their practice.” This may be attributable to
Buffalo’s 35-year experience in manufacturing vibrators for the
dental market, Leibick pointed out.

GENERAL MERCHANDISE CONT’D
TIPS FROM THE EXPERTS
THE POWER OF HOT LIGHT
By James E. Gervais, President and CEO
LaserStar® Technologies Corporation
Dental laboratories are increasingly looking to
laser technology to enhance their quality and
craftsmanship. Laser micro-welding systems
are an excellent alternative to traditional torch,
electric, arc, oven and furnace practices.
This technology produces a sharply focused beam of hot light that melts a very small
area of metal and can be used to join similar or
dissimilar alloys. The welding process can be
performed quickly (normally in milliseconds)
and does not scar or blemish the welding surface. By adjusting the laser’s beam diameter, a
smooth, near-polished flnish can be achieved
with the laser. Very little heat is generated at the
weld point, so users can weld 0.5 to 1.0 mm
away from complicated, intricate dental appliances, including heat-sensitive assemblies.
Lasers can be used for many laboratory assembly and repair applications, including partial denture reconstruction and repair, implant
and precision attachments, universal bridge
connection, fabrication, margin repair, and
correction of miscasts and titanium applications. Laser welding reconflgures the molecular
structure of dissimilar metals at the point of
welding, allowing the two separate alloys to
become one.
In some laboratories using laser welding,
the torch has been eliminated along with
fiux and solder, which also addresses some
health and safety issues. Scrap rates are reduced, and studies have shown that the weld
from a laser is considerably stronger than a
solder joint.
IWELD® LASER WELDER
iWeld® is the highest peak power laser welder in
the marketplace. Operators beneflt from pinpoint
accuracy, increase the range of laboratory assembly
and repair applications, and minimize the potential hazards of heat damage. The resulting weld is
considerably stronger than a traditional solder joint.
LaserStar’s well-known reputation for high-quality,
efflcient laser systems, make the iWeld® an excellent value. Ideal for gold, platinum, palladium-silver,
cobalt chrome, nickel-chrome, titanium, and many
other dental alloy applications

WHAT YOUR COLLEAGUES
ARE SAYING
The greatest advantage that I see with the LaserStar is the savings
of labor and materials because you eliminate the need to invest
