FUNCTIONAL V-508F
THICKENER for FATTY OIL BASED LUBRICANTS:
LuSC Listed, VGP Compliant and Food Grade
APPLICATION:
Triglyceride oils based on vegetable or tallow oils are sometimes to be preferred over petroleum base oils as base
stocks for blending hydraulic fluids and lubricants intended for use in environmentally sensitive applications. A
drawback, however, is that they are all of a similar light viscosity, only about 30-35 cSt at 40°C. FUNCTIONAL V508F is a liquid concentrated polymer based thickener for vegetable-based or animal-based fatty oils. ISO grades
up to ISO 1000 can easily be prepared.
COMPOSITION:
The active additive in FUNCTIONAL V-508F is a polymer selected for its shear stability and effectiveness in
thickening. This polymer is itself not biodegradable, but permits the viscosity adjustment of lubricants from
biodegradable base oil systems. The diluent in FUNCTIONAL V-508F is a biodegradable low viscosity methyl ester.
FUNCTIONAL V-508F is inherently biodegradable under all widely used standards.

TREATMENT LEVEL:
Unlike some competitive polymethacrylate (PMA) thickeners, V-508F has better shear stability while maintaining
comparable VI. A 1% solution in canola oil has the following properties compared to a competitive PMA.

As with any vegetable oil or synthetic based ester product seal compatibility should be tested by the user of this
product.
HANDLING:
FUNCTIONAL V-508F is a viscous liquid at room temperature. It should be warmed to about 50°C (120°F) to
facilitate pumping and handling. The base oil should be heated to 150°F to 180°F during blending to allow for
good mixing. Mixing time will vary with equipment but is typically at least one hour. Extended storage of this or
any other vegetable oil derived product at elevated temperatures is not recommended. Safe handling
precautions are the same as those to be taken with synthetic esters and vegetable oils; see the current Safety
Data Sheet.
