Medical Laboratory Technician Program Additional Program Information April 2013 Program Director: Amee Rosales PCC West Campus Room E-‐234 2202 W. Anklam Road Tucson, AZ 85709 (520) 206-‐6835 Division Dean: Mary Kay Gilliland PCC West Campus Room E-‐202 2202 W. Anklam Road Tucson, AZ 85709 (520) 206-‐6763 Mission and Goal Statement: The mission of the Pima Community College Medical Laboratory Technician Program is to develop well balanced professionals who are ready to enter the clinical laboratory field as Medical Laboratory Technicians. Our goal is to provide the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed for clinical competence and help students develop the independent learning skills needed to grow in the profession throughout their careers. High Quality Education: When choosing an MLT program, it is critical that the program be accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency. PCC’s MLT program is nationally accredited through the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), 8410 West Bryn Mawr, Suite 670, Chicago, IL 60631. (773) 714-‐8880. www.naacls.org Only MLT programs accredited by NAACLS can qualify their graduates to sit for the ASCP MLT certifying examination. For additional information, visit www.ascp.org. (Issuance of AAS MLT from PCC is not contingent upon students passing any certification or licensing examination.) The MLT curriculum emphasizes higher level math and science, as well as critical reasoning skills for proficient formulation of oral and written communication. The course content is designed to prepare our graduates to pass the ASCP certification examination. Since the program inception and accreditation, graduate’s pass rate on the ASCP certification examination is 94%. The pass rate is 100% for graduates since 2009 who have taken the ASCP certification examination within the first year after their graduation. Career Opportunities: The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Medical Laboratory Technology provides education and training for employment in various medical and bioscience laboratories. The U.S. Department of Labor has determined that the job opportunities will continue to increase through 2020. (See: www.bls.gov). Since 2008, 90% of our graduates have been hired as an MLT within six months of graduating from our program. Revised 2/2014 Program Cost: Total program cost is estimated at $8,400 (approximately $6,800 for in-‐state tuition and $1600 for fees). The MLT coursework portion of the total program cost is estimated to be $4,200 including in-‐state differential tuition, lab fees, fingerprint / DPS clearance, and drug screening. Program Schedule and Length: The degree program can be completed within five semesters, excluding placement requirements. This includes a clinical rotation at an affiliated hospital or reference laboratories. (See Appendix II.) An Associate of Applied Science degree is awarded upon completion of all coursework with a grade of C or better. Program Requirements: Program prerequisites, required courses and clinical placement requirements are posted on the College web site and College Catalog at www.pima.edu. Program Admission: Applicants must be admitted to Pima Community College and completed required coursework prior to requesting program admission. An application packet is available online or from the Medical Laboratory Technology office. Students may submit an application to the program at any time. Admission to the MLT program is based on completion of the prerequisite courses (see minimum grade requirements detailed on the College website – MLT program). Students who have submitted an MLT application and successfully completed a college level science course may request to be cleared to take MLT 101 prior to being admitted to the MLT program. Students may not take other MLT courses for credit until they are accepted into the program. Students accepted into the MLT program must have PCC’s “Technical Standards Essential for MLT Practice” completed by a licensed health care provider (MD, DO, NP or PA). In addition, students must show proof of immunization or immunity for MMR, TDaP, Varicella, Hep B (or waiver), and the flu (current season). Students also must have health insurance, a negative TB skin test or chest Xray (within 2 years), obtain a DPS fingerprint clearance card, and pass a urine drug screen. The MLT program accepts up to eight students in the fall and spring semesters. Applicants who have successfully completed all prerequisites, including MLT 101, will be accepted into the program until the quota is filled. If there are more than eight qualified applicants, acceptance will be determined based on the date on the student’s application. Students with later dates will be placed on a waiting list for the following semester. If there are less than eight students who have completed all prerequisites, alternate spots will be assigned to students who are currently enrolled in the remaining prerequisites. Failure of the student to complete these prerequisites will result in forfeiture of program seat.
