NOVAfloor is a heavy-duty, high-density polyester pad, that minimises airflow rising through floorboards, and because it is semi-rigid, it fits snugly between floor joists, eliminating air pockets and sagging over time. The effectiveness of thermal insulation is measured by the R-value, which rates its thermal resistance. When NOVAfloor Underfloor Insulation was released, the product was given an R-value of R1.4. That seemed a little low to us here at InsulPro; we were convinced that when correctly installed in a home (rather than tested in a laboratory), NOVAfloor would have a significantly higher R-value. Performance - Guaranteed! So we set about proving it, installing NOVAfloor under two homes and having its performance measured by an independent body over seven days. The results showed that NOVAfloor, as part of a system, achieved a maximum R-value of R2.18 and had only very small changes in its performance over the test period. NOVAfloor outperformed it’s R1.4 thermal rating by over 50%! insulation helpline 0800 100 007 www.insulpro.co.nz 224998 Content Sheets.indd 5 25/03/13 2:44 PM creating better environments Thermal Insulation Product Details NOVAtherm Multi - Underfloor Insulation Product Description R-Value Nominal Thickness (mm) Width (mm) Total Coverage (m2) Pieces (per pack) Underfloor Medium Density Pads NOVAtherm Multi medium density insulation is available pre-cut to suit a wide range of floor joist spacings NOVAtherm Multi - Underfloor 1.8 90 425 4.08 8 90 475 4.56 8 90 525 4.41 7 90 575 4.14 6 90 600 3.60 5 insulation helpline 0800 100 007 www.insulpro.co.nz 224998 Content Sheets.indd 6 25/03/13 2:44 PM Acoustic creating better environments creating better environments Acoustic Insulation Product Details Acoustic Insulation (STC) Product Description Stud Size (mm steel) Linings both sides (mm plaster board) STC (Rw) Weight (gsm) Nominal Thickness Width (mm) (mm) Total Coverage (m2) Pieces (per pack) Acoustic Insulation Blankets NOVAhush Acoustic Blankets typically used in suspended ceilings and steel framing NOVAhush 580 64 13 41 (Rw 41) 580 60 600 30.0 2 NOVAhush 750 64 13 43 (Rw 42) 750 60 600 20.0 3 NOVAhush 900 92 13 48 (Rw 47) 900 90 600 20.0 3 Sound Blanket and Pad typically used in timber framing NOVAhush Acoustic Blanket and Pads typically used in timber framing and mid floors NOVAhush Sound Blanket 90 1100 90 580 20.0 3 NOVAhush Sound Pad 90 1100 90 580 11.4 17 1000 100 600 20.0 3 NRC Nominal Thickness Width (mm) (mm) Total Coverage (m2) Pieces (per pack) Baffle Stack NOVAhush Baffle Stack typically used in ceiling cavities over partition walls NOVAhush Baffle Stack Acoustic Insulation (NRC) Product Description Acoustic Panels NOVAhush Acoustic Panels typically used as a finished product or behind perforated panels NOVAhush 35-25 0.70 25 1200 34.6 12 NOVAhush 35-50 0.90 50 1200 17.3 6 NOVAhush 35 - 75* 1.05 75 1200 11.5 4 NOVAhush 20-100* 0.95 100 1200 8.6 3 NOVAhush 40-100* 1.05 100 1200 8.6 3 Available in white, black, or white with black face. * Custom order. However to guard against hazards it is recommended that protective dust masks, safety glasses, knee pads and suitable clothing are worn. For further safety information refer to NZS 4246 appendix B and the HSE Act. In the situation where a single joist becomes a double joist simply make a right angle cut and fit the NOVAfloor as in picture 2. Tools Required • Tajima knife and replaceable blades • Ventilated goggles Picture 2. • Dust mask For optimal performance • Multi LED headlamp To ensure optimum performance there should be no gaps between the edge of the fitted NOVAfloor sheets and the floor joists as per picture 3. • Protective clothing • Tape measure • Glow spray paint Materials • NOVAfloor pre-cut sheets (all sheets are 1.2m in length and supplied at various widths). Safety • Do not use staples to fix NOVAfloor • Avoid cutting sheets of NOVAfloor against joists or bearers. Important! Having the right widths of NOVAfloor will make the installation a smooth process, minimizing the need for cutting and overall installation time. Picture 3. Brick veneer buildings or buildings with ventilated cavities in walls In the case of a brick veneer building or a building with a ventilated cavity in the wall fit the NOVAfloor sheets to the outer edge of the bottom plate. Do not insulate over the ventilated cavity as it may undermine air circulation and result in excessive moisture in the wall. Cutting Fitting Instructions Present the long edge of the sheet to the inside of the joist and then pressure fit the body of the sheet hard up to the floor as per picture 1. Fold the trailing edge down so the friction fit is complete. Each piece must measure a minimum of 25mm wider than the gap between the joists before fitting. When fitted the folded trailing edge section can be up to 140mm but not be more than the depth of the joist. On-site cutting should be kept to a minimum using the specialist knife and blades. Change the blade regularly. Avoid cutting sheets of NOVAfloor against joists or bearers. Pipes For all piping and plumbing fittings, always maintain a 100mm gap between the NOVAfloor and the waste pipes in case of any future water leak. This will also ensure adequate room for a serviceman requiring access to pipes. Wiring Mark up all electrical wiring and telephone lines with glow spray paint, prior to starting the job. Where possible, NOVAfloor should be fitted above the electrical wiring lines. Picture 1. Warning tags should be placed at points where NOVAfloor covers the electrical wiring. Take proper care not to crush or damage the power or phone lines. insulation helpline 0800 100 007 www.insulpro.co.nz 224998 Content Sheets.indd 16 25/03/13 2:44 PM creating better environments Acoustic Bafflestack Insulation Safety and Installation Guidelines General Guidelines for ceilings NOVAhush 100% polyester insulation is safe and user friendly. Easy to Install • Manufactured in pads, it is easy to install as it is friction fitted and squeezed to fit between the underfloor joists. • NOVAtherm Underfloor comes in pre-cut pads which are varying widths. • Before installation, measure the distances between floor joists. We recommend every single bay is measured as joist spacing can vary in a house. This will help in selecting the appropriate width(s) to minimise cutting and installation time. Lights • For lights under the floor maintain a 200mm gap between NOVAtherm Underfloor and the light Is your home brick veneer or a building with ventilated cavity in the wall? • Do not block the ventilated cavity with insulation, as it will reduce the air circulation and result in moisture in the wall • Only fit NOVAtherm Underfloor to the outer edge of the bottom plate, leaving the cavity clear Other Hazards/Obstructions Recommended tools Clearances between the insulation and potential items under the floor • Wide blade craft knife with a pack of replaceable blades • Brick/concrete chimneys - 50mm • Multi LED headlamp How to install NOVAtherm Underfloor • Ventilated goggles, dust mask and protective clothing (for protection from dirt, dust, spiders and other safety risks) The product is designed to be friction fitted between the floor joists. Allow 5-35mm pad width, over the gap between the inside of the floor joists to ensure a snug fit. • Tap measure and/or digital laser meter • Glow spray paint Cutting the product to fit • On-site cutting should be kept to a minimum using the recommended knife and blades. Change the blade regularly • Avoid cutting NOVAtherm Underfloor against joists or bearers, or near electrical wiring Things to look out for Electrical Wires Here is what you need to do: • Mark the position of the electrical wire and telephone lines • Were possible NOVAtherm Underfloor should be fitted behind electrical wires • Take care not to be damage electrical wires or phone lines treat all wires as live • Warning tags should be placed at points when NOVAtherm Underfloor covers electrical wiring For other clearances please refer to NZS4246 1 Begin by sitting the long edge of the pad against the inside the of joists 2 Fit the pad hard up the floor boards and fold the remainder of the pad hard against the other joist. 3 To minimise cutting, the product can be folded down on one side of the joist or double folded. The fold can protrude below the bottom of the joist by up to 15mm. Where floor joists are spaced 500mm or greater, additional support may be required to prevent sagging 4 Fit the next pad by butting both ends together without gaps. It should sit firmly in place. There should be no tucks or creases 5 Continue the process until the Underfloor is fully insulated 6 At the end of the installation check and repair any visible gaps. Use any offcuts to fill small gaps insulation helpline 0800 100 007 www.insulpro.co.nz 224998 Content Sheets.indd 12 25/03/13 2:44 PM creating better environments Wall Insulation Safety and Installation Guidelines General InsulPro 100% polyester insulation is safe and easy to install. Application - general AS/NZS 60695.2.2, NZ only - Amendment A, introduces new classification or recessed luminaires (downlights). The new classification determines what types of recessed luminaries can be used in residential installtions and whether they require a clearance to insulation. The luminaries must have their respective class permanently marked on the fitting. NOVAtherm polyester insulation meets the performance standards for insulation, including the needle flame test AS/ NZS 60695.11.5. 3.5 InstallInsulation-General Lay,install,fitandfixtoNZBCH1/AS1:Energyefficiency,2.0Buildingthermalenvelope,andtomanufacturer’s requirements.InstallinhousingtoNZS4218andNZS4246.InstallinlargebuildingstoNZS4243.1andNZS4220. Polyester products may ‘grow’ in thickness well beyond their outof-pack thickness when installed in situations of high heat build up such as skillion type roofs. This excessive growth needs to be accommodated within the roof design to maintain the minimum 25mm clearance. insulation helpline 0800 100 007 www.insulpro.co.nz 224998 InsulPro 4710N Architects Manual.indd 6 11/03/13 3:14 PM 4710N InsulPro Thermal and Acoustic Insulation 3.15 FitPolyesterThermalInsulationPad:Membrane/SkillionRoofs Frictionfit,NOVAthermpolyesterfibreinsulationpadbetweenceilingrafters.Useanappropriatesharpcraftknife withreplaceablebladesorspecialisedinsulationsawtocuttosizeoraroundpenetrationsifrequired.Maintaina minimumclearanceof25mmbetweentheinsulationandtheroofingmembrane(underlay)exceptwhereasolid timber(orplywood)substrateisusedundertheroofcladding. 3.16 FixDrapedWireNettingorSafetyMesh Drapemeshatrightanglesacrosspurlinswithenoughslacktoallowinsulationtoretainitsnominalthickness. It is easy to install as it is friction fitted between the floor joists and is able to be squeezed to fit tightly under the floor. Air trapped inside the fabric and inside the hollow fibres contribute to the insulation the pads provide. As a medium density pad product, it will outperform underfloor blanket when in-situ. Product features and benefits • InsulPro take the fibres from recycled plastic bottles (PET), that would otherwise be waste, and manufacture NOVAtherm Multi. • Manufactured in pad form, it is friction fitted snug up against the floor. There is no need for staples, removing the danger of electrocution. • NOVAtherm Multi insulation creates a healthier, more comfortable home environment, costing less to heat and cool - it reduces the draughts coming up from under the floor. • If your home was built before 2000, you are eligible for up to $1,300 towards the cost of insulation, as part of the ENERGYWISE home insulation programme. Check out www.energywise.govt.nz for full terms and conditions. • NOVAtherm Multi is manufactured to last. InsulPro will guarantee it for 50 years.1 • No precautions are required for handling NOVAtherm Multi. It will not cause irritation when touched and it gives off no fumes or odours. • NOVAtherm Multi is safe and easy to work with - manufactured in pad form for ease of install. • NOVAtherm Multi will reduce the noise of foot fall on floorboards. • NOVAtherm Multi is manufactured in New Zealand. 1 InsulPro guarantee that, so long as the insulation is installed correctly and remains adequately protected, NOVAtherm and NOVAfloor will perform as well as when installed for at least 50 years. Design Information 4.3 Novatherm Insulation is white in colour and is packaged in a double layer clear tube compression packaging. Each packet is supplied with labelling in compliance with AS/ NZS 4859.1 4.4 Accessories used with Novatherm which are supplied by the Insulation Installer are : • Plastic strapping - Where plastic strapping is used to control the insulation material from movement that would affect the performance of the thermal insulation, strapping that meets the requirements of NZBC Clause B2 DURABILITY: Performance B2.3.1(a) 50 years, must be used. • Plastic strapping fixings - Plastic strapping fixings such as hot dipped galvanised clouts or zinc plated staples that meet the requirements of NZBC Clause B2 DURABILITY: Performance B2.3.1(a) 50 years. General 7.1 Novatherm Insulation is designed to be used as thermal insulation to meet the energy efficiency and other NZBC insulation requirements, or to provide greater ratings when required by the designer, when installed in building walls, roofs, ceilings and floors. 7.2 The building envelope must be constructed to meet the requirements of the NZBC. The insulation must remain dry during installation and throughout the life of the building. 7.3 To prevent moisture transfer to Novatherm Insulation, a separation (minimum 25 mm) is required between Novatherm Insulation and any flexible roof underlay. Where there is a rigid sheathing or roofing substrate such as plywood, provided there is no design requirement for roof space ventilation, a separation between Novatherm Insulation and the sheathing or substrate is not required. 7.4 The clearances specified in the installation instructions, or specified by the manufacturer of heating appliances and recessed light fittings must be met. The use of recessed light fittings may, therefore, reduce the thermal performance of insulated ceilings. This factor must be taken into account in the assessment of compliance with NZBC Clause H1 Energy Efficiency. 7.5 Where the insulation material is not laid directly on a ceiling lining or over ceiling battens or joists, it must be adequately supported by galvanised wire netting or some other suitable corrosion resistant material. This applies to commercial buildings. 7.6 When the insulation is installed in a wall with a drained cavity where the stud spacings are greater than 450 mm, an intermediate means of restraining the insulation from bulging into the cavity must be installed in accordance with NZBC Acceptable Solution E2/AS1 Paragraph 9.1.8.5. Handling and Storage 5.1 Novatherm must be stored under cover and in dry conditions. Heavy objects must not be stacked on the packs. The packs must be stored in an orientation that avoids excessive compression of the product. 5.2 In general, insulation products are sensitive to the length of time they are stored under compression packaging. The longer they are stored, the longer it will take for them to recover to their natural loft after unpacking. Technical Literature 6.1 Refer to the Appraisals listing on the BRANZ website for details of the current Technical Literature for Novatherm. The Technical Literature must be read in conjunction with this Appraisal. All aspects of design, use, installation and maintenance contained in the Technical Literature and within the scope of this Appraisal must be followed. 2 224998 rest_RNC.indd 4 25/03/13 5:18 PM 7.7 Where the insulation is installed in exterior walls, it is preferable for the insulation material nominal thickness to be selected to provide a snug close fit of the insulation between building wrap and the interior wall lining (reference note Paragraph 4.2). Modelling of housing and smaller buildings 13.2 The modelling method described in NZS 4218 section 3.3 (as modified by NZBC Verification Method H1/VM1 Paragraphs 1.1.2 and 1.1.3) is a Verification Method for NZBC Clause H1.3.1(a) for the following types of buildings: a) Housing, regardless of total floor area (the method is also a means of compliance with Clause H1.3.2 E, which applies only to housing), and b) Small buildings other than housing having a net lettable area no greater than 300 m2. Durability Serviceable Life 8.1 Where the building is maintained so that provisions of the NZBC E2 and E3 Clauses are met, and where the insulation is not crushed or exposed to conditions that will diminish its thermal performance, (e.g. moisture), and where the material is accessible then NOVAtherm can expect to have a serviceable life of at least 15 years. NOVAtherm can also expect to have a serviceable life of 50 years when installed in dry, non-accessible enclosed construction cavities. Building performance index for housing 13.3 Compliance with NZBC Clause H1.3.2 E (Building Performance Index or BPI) satisfies Clause H1.3.1(a). Modelling of large buildings other than housing 13.4 The modelling method described in NZS 4243:2007 parts 1 and 2 is a Verification Method for NZBC Clause H1.3.1 (a) for buildings other than Housing having a net lettable area greater than 300 m2. Maintenance Determining thermal resistance 13.5 The thermal resistance (R-values) of building elements may be verified by using NZS 4214. The BRANZ ‘House Insulation Guide’ Fourth Edition provides thermal resistances of common building elements and is based on calculations from NZS 4214. 9.1 The building must be maintained weatherproof at all times. If, during normal routine maintenance it is discovered that moisture has entered the building envelope, or that dampness has occurred because of leaking plumbing or some other source, then that source must be repaired immediately. Wet or damp insulation must be removed and then replaced with new insulation of an equivalent thermal rating. Cavities must be clean, dry and free of all contaminants and mould before fitting new insulation. NZS 4246 Paragraph 3.3 gives guidance on thermal insulation maintenance due to water damage. Building Thermal Envelope 13.6 NZBC Acceptable Solution H1/AS1 can be used for housing, communal residential, communal non-residential and commercial buildings. Housing and Small Buildings 13.7 Construction in accordance with NZS 4218 sections 3.1 or 3.2 (as modified by NZBC Acceptable Solution H1/AS1 Paragraphs 2.1.3 and 2.1.4) satisfies NZBC H1.3.1 (a) for housing of any size and all buildings having a net lettable area no greater than 300 m2. 13.8 Construction in accordance with NZS 4218 sections 3.1 or 3.2 (as modified by NZBC Acceptable Solution H1/ AS1 Paragraphs 2.1.3 and 2.1.4) satisfies NZBC H1.3.2 E for housing of any size, including the external walls of multi-unit dwellings. (Note that common walls between household units of multi-unit dwellings need not comply with NZS 4218.) Outbreak of Fire 10.1 Novatherm must be separated or protected from sources of heat such as chimneys, fireplaces, flues and fuel burning appliances in accordance with the requirements of NZBC Acceptable Solution C/AS1 Part 9. External Moisture 11.1 The total building envelope must comply with the requirements of NZBC E2 to ensure that the insulation remains dry in use. 11.2 The moisture content of the construction materials at the time of enclosing the insulation must meet the requirements of NZBC Acceptable Solution E2/AS1, or lower moisture content if required by the lining manufacturer. Installation Information Installation Skill Level Requirements 14.1 Installation of Novatherm must be completed by an installer with an understanding of insulation installation, in accordance with the instructions given within the Technical Literature, Installation Instructions and this Appraisal. Internal Moisture 12.1 Buildings other than communal non-residential, commercial, industrial, outbuildings or ancillary buildings, must be constructed with an adequate combination of thermal resistance, ventilation, and space temperature must be provided to all habitable spaces, bathrooms, laundries and other spaces where moisture may be generated or may accumulate. 12.2 Roofs and walls of housing complying with the Schedule Method for Compliance with Clause H1.3.2 E will have adequate thermal resistance. Other buildings may require more thermal insulation to satisfy the requirements of NZBC E3/ AS1 than that to satisfy the energy efficiency provisions alone. General 15.1 Installation of Novatherm must be in accordance with the manufacturer’s Technical Literature, Installation Instructions and this Appraisal. Installation is to be carried out by trained installers only. NZS 4246 should be used as a guide for installing insulation in residential buildings. 15.2 The product must be installed only when the building is enclosed and when the construction materials have achieved the required maximum moisture content or less, to ensure the insulation does not become wet. Energy Efficiency Building Thermal Envelope 13.1 NZBC Verification Method H1/VM1 can be used for housing, communal residential, communal non-residential and commercial buildings. 3 224998 rest_RNC.indd 5 25/03/13 5:18 PM Quality 15.3 After release from the packaging, and its installation, Novatherm will require some time to fully re-loft to its correct thickness. The time taken to completely loft will depend upon the length of time the product has been packaged and stored and the ambient temperature. 15.4 Novatherm is manufactured in roll sizes to allow product to be torn to length to suit wall floor and ceiling framing spaces. (See Table 1) 15.5 Novatherm tears across the roll to fit into cavities where required. 15.6 Where Novatherm is cut to fit wall cavities, the wall cavities must be completely filled to prevent sagging and thermal convection. 15.7 The insulation must be neatly fitted between framing members and linings and staple fixed so that the potential for gaps and convective heat loss is reduced. The material must not be folded, tucked or compressed. A close, even fit provides the most efficient thermal performance. 15.8 The insulation must be continuous across the entire roof or ceiling plane between top plates of external walls, and fitted either between or over rafters, ceiling joists or truss chords. Wherever possible the insulation should be fitted beneath wiring or plumbing. Recessed Light fittings 15.9 The use of recessed light fittings installed as downlights in insulated ceilings or roof-spaces is not recommended. Down-lights cannot be covered with insulation. Where they are present, the thermal performance of the ceilings/roofspaces will be reduced, and the overheating risk of materials in the ceiling will be increased. Compensation for the gaps required around lights must be made in order to meet the requirements of clause H1. A minimum clearance of 100 mm between down-lights and insulation must be maintained unless the manufacturer of the down-light can verify a lesser clearance is appropriate. 19.1 The manufacture of Novatherm has been examined by BRANZ, including methods adopted for quality control. Details of the manufacturing processes, and quality and composition of the raw materials used were obtained and found to be satisfactory. 19.2 Insulpro Manufacturing Ltd is responsible for the quality of the product supplied. 19.3 Quality of installation of the product on site is the responsibility of the installer. 19.4 Quality of maintenance of the building to ensure the insulation material remains dry is the responsibility of the building owner. The packs must be stored in an orientation that avoids excessive compression of the product. 5.2 In general, insulation products are sensitive to the length of time they are stored under compression packaging. The longer they are stored, the longer it will take for them to recover to their natural loft after unpacking. 5.3 Although the recovery is accelerated by temperatures above 35°C, Novafloor may not recover its full loft, and therefore may not achieve its R-value, if it is stored for more than 6 months in its compression pack. Outbreak of Fire 10.1 Novafloor must be separated or protected from sources of heat such as chimneys, fireplaces, flues and fuel burning appliances in accordance with the requirements of NZBC Acceptable Solution C/AS1 Part 9. External Moisture 11.1 The total building envelope must comply with the requirements of NZBC Clause E2 to ensure that the insulation remains dry in use. 11.2 The moisture content of the construction materials at the time of installing and enclosing the insulation must meet the requirements of NZBC Acceptable Solution E2/AS1 Paragraph 11.2(a), or a lower moisture content if required by the flooring manufacturer. Technical Literature 6.1 Refer to the Appraisals listing on the BRANZ website for details of the current Technical Literature for Novafloor. The Technical Literature must be read in conjunction with this Appraisal. All aspects of design, use, installation and maintenance contained in the Technical Literature and within the scope of this Appraisal must be followed. Internal Moisture 12.1 Buildings other than Communal Non-residential, Commercial, Industrial, Outbuildings or Ancillary buildings, must be constructed with an adequate combination of thermal resistance, ventilation, and space temperature provided to all habitable spaces, bathrooms, laundries and other spaces where moisture may be generated or may accumulate. Design Information General 7.1 Novafloor is designed to be used as thermal insulation to meet the energy efficiency and other NZBC insulation requirements, or to provide greater ratings when required by the designer, when installed in buildings as underfloor insulation. 7.2 The building envelope must be constructed to ensure the insulation remains dry during installation and throughout the life of the building. Where exposed to high winds, underfloors must be lined. 7.3 Novafloor is intended to be friction fitted between floor joists in new or existing buildings. The strips are supplied in sizes and thicknesses for this purpose. Novafloor must not be mechanically fixed. 7.4 The R-value of 1.4 m2 ºC/W is designed to meet the minimum requirements of NZS 4218. 7.5 The clearances specified in the installation instructions, or specified by the manufacturer of heating appliances and floor vent openings must be adhered to. This factor must be taken into account in the assessment of compliance with NZBC Clause H1 Energy Efficiency. Energy Efficiency Building Thermal Envelope 13.1 NZBC Verification Method H1/VM1 can be used for Housing, Communal Residential, Communal Non-residential and Commercial buildings. Modelling of Housing and Smaller Buildings 13.2 The modelling method described in NZS 4218 Section 3.3 (as modified by NZBC Verification Method H1/VM1 Paragraphs 1.1.2 and 1.1.3) is a Verification Method for NZBC Clause H1.3.1(a) for the following types of buildings: a) Housing, regardless of total floor area (the method is also a means of compliance with Clause H1.3.2 E, which applies only to housing), and b) Small buildings other than housing having a net lettable area no greater than 300 m2. 2 224998 rest_RNC.indd 9 25/03/13 5:18 PM the edge of the Novafloor strip, then pressure fit the body of the Novafloor strip hard up under the floor, folding the trailing edge down. 15.5 Where a single joist thickness becomes a double joist thickness, make a right angle cut and fit the Novafloor strip. 15.6 Where Novafloor is installed in a brick veneer building or a building with ventilated cavity in walls, fit the Novafloor sheets to the last exterior floor joist. Do not insulate over the ventilated cavity as it may undermine air circulation and result in excessive moisture in the wall. 15.7 A minimum 100 mm gap must be maintained between plumbing pipe work and fittings and the Novafloor blanket in case there are water leaks. This gap will also ensure there is adequate access for a serviceman repairing damaged pipes and fittings. Inspections Building Performance Index for Housing 13.3 Compliance with NZBC Clause H1.3.2 E (Building Performance Index or BPI) satisfies Clause H1.3.1(a). Modelling of Large Buildings Other Than Housing 13.4 The modelling method described in NZS 4243.1 Section 4.4 is a Verification Method for NZBC Clause H1.3.1(a) for buildings other than Housing having a net lettable area greater than 300 m2. Determining Thermal Resistance 13.5 The thermal resistance (R-values) of building elements may be verified by using NZS 4214. The BRANZ ‘House Insulation Guide’ Third Edition provides thermal resistances of common building elements and is based on calculations from NZS 4214. Building Thermal Envelope 13.6 NZBC Acceptable Solution H1/AS1 can be used for Housing, Communal Residential, Communal Non-Residential and Commercial buildings. 15.8 The Technical Literature must be referred to during the inspection of Novafloor installations. (Note that common walls between household units of multi-unit dwellings need not comply with NZS 4218.) Health and Safety 16.1 Novafloor is easy to handle. NZS 4246 gives guidance for health and safety requirements such as personal protective clothing and installation hazard assessment. Basis of Appraisal The following is a summary of the technical investigations carried out: Tests 17.1 BRANZ has carried out thermal resistance testing of Novafloor in accordance with AS/NZS 4859.1 Installation Information Installation Skill Level Requirements Other Investigations 14.1 Installation of Novafloor must be completed by an installer with an understanding of insulation installation, in accordance with the instructions given within the Technical Literature, Installation Instructions and this Appraisal. 18.1 An assessment of the durability of Novafloor has been made by BRANZ technical experts. 18.2 The manufacturer’s Technical Literature and Installation Instructions have been reviewed by BRANZ and found to be satisfactory. 18.3 Site inspections have been undertaken by BRANZ to assess the practicability of installation. General 15.1 Installation of Novafloor must be in accordance with the manufacturer’s Technical Literature, Installation Instructions and this Appraisal. NZS 4246 should be used as a guide for installing insulation in residential buildings. Novafloor is not designed to be mechanically fastened and must be cut with specialised tooling. 15.2 The product must be installed only when the building is enclosed and when the construction materials have achieved the required maximum moisture content or less, to ensure the insulation does not become wet. 15.3 Novafloor is installed by friction fitting the insulation strips between the floor joists. A long edge of the Novafloor strip is first held against the internal corner formed by the joist and floor junction. The body of the Novafloor strip is then press fit hard up under the floor. The trailing (opposite from the first long edge) edge is folded down so that the friction fit is complete. The folded edge can be up to 75mm long without compromising the thermal performance of the Novafloor. There must be no gaps between subsequent installed strips otherwise the thermal performance will be compromised. 15.4 When fitting Novafloor into floor joist spans wider than the Novafloor strips, place a Novafloor packer against the inside edge of a floor joist, butt the edge of the Novafloor strip against Quality 19.1 The manufacture of Novafloor has been examined by BRANZ, including methods adopted for quality control. Details of the manufacturing processes, and quality and composition of the raw materials used were obtained and found to be satisfactory. 19.2 Insulpro Manufacturing (NZ) Ltd is responsible for the quality of the product supplied. 19.3 Quality of installation of the product on site is the responsibility of the installer. 19.4 Quality of maintenance of the building to ensure the insulation material remains dry is the responsibility of the building owner. 3 224998 rest_RNC.indd 10 25/03/13 5:18 PM Sources of Information • • • • • • AS/NZS 4859.1: 2002 Materials for the thermal insulation of buildings.
