2013-14
“I would like to thank you on behalf of the JCR for your generous donations over the past year. Your support directly impacts on the lives of the undergraduates of the College. It is thanks to your continued commitment that Merton can sustain excellence in the face of decreasing government funding, regardless of our students’ financial backgrounds. The 750th Anniversary
Campaign has targeted both the tutorial system and student support, thus providing a foundation for the very special educational experience that distinguishes
Merton, and for this we are truly thankful.”
“On behalf of all the members of the Merton College
Middle Common Room, from Masters’ students to
DPhils, those reading for a second BA to fourth-year undergraduates, we thank you for your continued support and interest in Merton’s future. As the
750th Anniversary Campaign brings this special chapter in the College’s history to a close, graduate students – now over 50% of Merton’s total student body – have not only been active participants in the year’s festivities, but have been increasingly central in perpetuating its legacy of excellence. Your support has funded everything from additional graduate research scholarships to new state-of-the-art teaching facilities like the TS Eliot Theatre - you have made a difference!”
With thanks to John Cairns (www.johncairns.co.uk) whose photography is used throughout the Donor Report and to
Greg Smolonski (www.photovibe.net) who contributed the photos on page 10 and the centre photo on page 11.
On 31 December 2014, Merton’s 750th Anniversary Year drew to a close and the
Sustaining Excellence Campaign officially ended. I am incredibly proud to report that, thanks to the wonderful generosity of Mertonians across the world, we have well and truly surpassed the 750th Anniversary Campaign goal of £30 million, raising a total of £30,419,635 by the end of 2014. My sincerest thanks go out to each and every one of you who donated to the Campaign.
This Donor Report summarises all that was accomplished in the College’s last financial year (1 August 2013 – 31 July 2014), but this remarkable achievement deserves its own mention and, indeed, celebration! In addition to your Donor
Report this year, we are sending you a commemorative College coat of arms made up of all 2,891 names of those who donated to the Sustaining Excellence Campaign
– a beautiful symbol and a small token of our thanks for all that you have done.
We have also put together a special Sustaining Excellence Report, which retells the story of the Campaign – from the seed of an idea seven years ago – and celebrates the amazing projects that you have made a reality; from the fantastic research you have helped fund and teaching positions you have saved from disappearing, to the students you have helped through their studies. It is a remarkable story that needs to be told and I hope that you will enjoy our telling of it.
The annual Donor Report, which was first produced in 2009, will continue to live on for many years after the 750th Anniversary Campaign. As well as providing an enlightening read, helping you understand how Merton spends and invests its funds, it is a continuing reminder of the importance of your donations. Each year, thousands of you give to the Annual Fund and, in 2013-14, you did Merton proud once more. These gifts amounted to more than £1 million for the second year running and are proof that smaller, regular donations can make a massive difference to the day-to-day running of the College. Thank you.
With your support, Merton has been able to achieve a great deal over the last seven years. However, the work did not stop at the stroke of midnight at the end of 2014. The Strategic Review will inform the next steps for Merton. Moving forward, I am confident that the College’s community will continue to sustain the excellence for which Merton is renowned.

Total incoming resources were £14.3 million for the year 2013-14. Income from all sources rose by £0.6 million on the previous year, due to increases in investment and trading income. Total expenditure at Merton in 2013-14 was £12.1 million, an increase of £0.4 million from the previous year. At the end of the financial year
2013-14, the College reported a surplus of £1.3 million on its unrestricted funds and an overall surplus of £0.8 million when restricted and endowment funds were included. The surplus on total funds was a result of the many generous donations received over the year. The surplus on unrestricted funds was in part due to the application of total return accounting for the first time.
Merton received £3.4 million in donations from Alumni and Friends of the College, as well as from Trusts and Foundations in the 2013-14 financial year. £2.6 million was donated towards endowments, including Student Support (particularly Undergraduate
Student Support), Graduate Scholarships, the Choral Foundation, the Classics
Fellowship, the Chemistry Fellowship, the Economics Fellowship, the Philosophy
Fellowship, the Mark Reynolds History Fellowship and the English Fellowship.
Over the past five years, £2.9 million has been received to help us protect and resource our historic buildings.
The Unrestricted Fund benefited from £0.4 million of legacies and donations last year, as gifts via the Annual Fund and telephone campaigns made important contributions once more.
Over the seven years up to and including 2013-14, the College received
£25.8 million in donations from all sources. For information on funds raised (i.e. money received plus gifts pledged), see page 7. Despite the difficult economic background, Mertonians and Friends of the College have continued to demonstrate their generosity, which has enabled Merton to achieve the £30 million target for its
750th Anniversary Campaign, Sustaining Excellence.
The College’s endowments grew by £23.6 million in 2013-14. In the five years to
2013-14, the endowment increased by £76.7 million, including donated endowments of £13.2 million. Merton also enjoyed excellent investment returns over the year with a return of 16.9% for 2013-14. Total returns to the College’s equity portfolio were in line with markets over the period. The College’s properties continued to produce good income, with capital values also growing substantially in the year.

The 2013-14 fundraising year, with its total of £5.37 million funds raised, was the most successful of all seven years of the Sustaining Excellence Campaign, surpassing the 2010-11 year by £38,000. Warm thanks and very many congratulations from the College to all our 1,890 donors!
By the end of July 2014, £29.7 million had been raised for the Sustaining
Excellence Campaign:
• Guaranteeing the Tutorial System: £13 million towards our £15 million target
• Supporting Students: £7.9 million towards our £8 million target
• Protecting and Resourcing our Historic Buildings: £4.9 million towards our
£7 million target
• Other (including Unrestricted Funds): £3.9 million
Fundraising for the Chemistry, English and Philosophy Fellowships was completed last year. The targets for the latter two fellowships were reached in time to qualify for the matching money from the University’s Teaching Fund, mainly due to the generosity of a number of major donors (see page 11). Progress on Student Support was most gratifying in the 2013-14 year. Ian Taylor (1975) pledged £1 million to
Undergraduate Student Support, matching the previous generosity of Sir Howard
Stringer (1961) and thereby leveraging another £1 million of Moritz-Heyman money for University undergraduate scholarships and outreach work. As the pie charts show, many other generous donors gave to this cause over 2013-14, leaving
£306,159 still to raise to fund Merton’s undergraduate bursaries in perpetuity.
Fundraising for graduate scholarships was also exciting in the 2013-14 year, with
John Moussouris (1971) endowing a new scholarship in Mathematics, and Peter
Palmer (1968) funding a scholarship in Mathematical Physics for the next four years.
The 2013-14 fundraising year was always going to be an exciting one for the
Development team at Merton. Overseeing the 750th Anniversary Celebrations and guiding the Sustaining Excellence Campaign towards its £30 million target made for a challenging 12 months! The diagram below shows those highs and lows. All the way through this Campaign there have been two different but related targets: to raise £30 million for the College and to increase radically the number of Mertonians who give to the College on an annual basis. The number of donors and the actual funds raised sometimes correlate, but not always. And just as your overwhelming generosity meant that the Campaign target was reached three and a half months ahead of schedule, so too the participation rate in 2013-14 reached an amazing high once again. At 33.4%, it was the second highest in Oxford. Thank you.

For the financial year 2013-14, the Annual Fund recorded its highest ever total of new funds raised for the second year running.
Merton is now the first college in Oxford to raise more than £1 million through the
Annual Fund for two consecutive years. We could not have achieved this without the support of Mertonians such as yourself. Thank you. Our participation rate was the third highest in the University, by quite some margin!
We had a dramatic surge in telethon income in 2013-14 from our two telephone campaigns in September 2013 and March 2014, which collectively raised more than £330,000 through the hard work of 18 of Merton’s students. They really enjoyed speaking with Mertonians from around the world – from Moreton-in-Marsh to Mexico! In each case the telephone campaign was matched by a gift from a generous major donor.
Running from 1 August 2013 to 31 July 2014 and encompassing all gifts under
£25,000, the Annual Fund is essential. It makes up a significant proportion of the
College’s unrestricted income, which we must seek to raise each year to cover running costs, as well as other key priorities – support that we will continue to require beyond our 750th Anniversary Campaign.
Looking to the future, Merton’s challenge now is to ensure that the Annual Fund continues to evolve with the College’s strategy and the need to bolster unrestricted income. We must build this together on the strong foundation achieved through
Merton’s 750th Anniversary Campaign, Sustaining Excellence.

The College’s Society for generous Annual Fund donors, the 1264 Society, had a record 275 members in 2013-14 – that is 5% of all Mertonians. This support is a terrific endorsement of your generosity and care for future generations of
Mertonians. Thank you.
One way in which we extend our thanks to the generous group of donors is by holding an annual 1264 Society drinks reception. This year’s celebration was held in central London, at Gallery Different, with a lecture by Guy Portelli RBA FRBS, the
Vice President of The Royal Society of British Artists. The photos on this page were taken at this event.
In the coming year, we are consulting many 1264 Society members to ensure that the Society continues to flourish and to grow in exciting new directions. We would like 1264 Society members to have a greater input in the future direction of the
Society, its events, expansion and community.
If you are interested in joining the 1264 Society, please get in touch with me, either by email on peter.oconnor@merton.ox.ac.uk or by phone on 01865 286312.

1264 SOCIETY MEMBERSHIP: ANNUAL GIFT 1 AMOUNTS
1 within the College’s financial year (1 August to 31 July)
It has been a truly magnificent year for Merton and we have been overwhelmed by the generosity shown by so many of our major benefactors and friends.
There was a fantastic major donor response to our final call to arms to complete the fundraising for the
English and Philosophy Fellowships.
This unlocked matched funding from the University to endow these vital posts jointly – and we are delighted to report that both fellowships were completed just in time.
An anonymous donor made a very generous gift towards the English
Fellowship and also pledged to match every gift raised during the autumn
2014 Telephone Campaign. The student callers reported that being able to inform potential donors that any donation they might make would be matched was a real incentive and encouraged many more Mertonians to support the Fellowship appeal.
Mark Thompson (1976), Lord Freud of
Eastry (1969) and another anonymous donor also chose to support English with significant donations and helped us cross the finishing line. We also received a fantastically generous gift from an anonymous donor that completed funding for the Philosophy
Fellowship, along with wonderful gifts from Paul Woodruff (1965) and Martin
Glenn (1978), and further support from the lead donors for this appeal,
Richard Burns (1964) and David Ure
(1965).
The visionary support shown by everyone who donated to both of these Fellowship appeals was incredible. Merton will now be able to guarantee tutorial teaching in these subjects for generations to come - thank you.
Following a dinner to mark the launch of the Merton Law Fellowship appeal by the three lead donors, Hilary Evenett
(1982), Laurie Rabinowitz (1983) and
Matthew Tobin (1991), John Davies
(1974) and Ben Perry (1992) both made generous donations.
Significant support has been shown for graduate scholarships during the 2013-14 year. An exceptionally generous gift from John Moussouris
(1971) enabled the College to endow a graduate scholarship in Mathematics.
The Jim Buckee (1968) Scholarship in
Physics continues to be funded on an annual basis and Peter Palmer (1968) has funded a graduate scholarship in
Mathematical Physics for the next four years. These scholarships are vital to assist with Merton’s goal to attract and retain the very brightest and best graduate students.
Undergraduate student support continues to be at the forefront of many Mertonians’ minds and, in addition to a magnanimous pledge from Ian Taylor (1975) in September
2013, we have received generous contributions from Richard Allan
(1959), Tira Wannamethee (1981) and Jean de Pourtales (1984).
Mertonians also continue to support many other aspects of the College.
The Reed Foundation has, once again, been instrumental in ensuring that the
College Choir remains one of the very best in Oxford. John Booth (1976) has made a further contribution to the
Chapel and we are delighted that the
A.G. Leventis Foundation is once again funding the Leventis Research Fellow in Ancient Greek.
In closing, it is appropriate to thank each member of our 750th
Anniversary Campaign Board. Once again they have all made a significant gift to Merton. In recognition of this, and of the incredible leadership and commitment the Board has shown to spearheading the Campaign, a
College suite has been named the
750th Anniversary Room. It seems most fitting that their names will be recognised on a plaque in the room for years to come.
The incredible generosity shown by so many Mertonians and Friends of the College enabled us to reach the
£30 million Campaign target four months ahead of schedule. Together you have helped to ensure that Merton will remain the unique and beautiful
College that you remember. Thank you for helping us to “Sustain Excellence”.

In 2013-14 Merton College received gifts from 1,890 Mertonians and Friends, of whom 78 wish to remain anonymous.
Merton College would like to thank all donors for their generous support. Within the ensuing pages we pay credit to all those who have made a public gift during the 2013-14 financial year, whether directly to the College or to the Merton College
Charitable Corporation (MC3). We are also delighted to celebrate those Major Benefactors and Patrons who have made exceptionally generous contributions to Merton’s 750th Anniversary Campaign, Sustaining Excellence, each of them donating more than £10,000 since its inception.
If your donation was made after 31 July 2014 we will be pleased to acknowledge your gift in next year’s Donor Report. If we have made any errors or inadvertently left your name off the list, please accept our apologies and let us know.
The Benefactions Committee was formed after the Merton College Charitable Trust was wound up in 2011. The
Committee’s remit is to review the receipt, investment, disbursement and accounting of donations received by the College. The Committee as currently constituted first met on 27 November 2012.
The Committee, which was formed in July 2012, presents its report to the College’s benefactors for the fiscal year to 31 July
2014. The Committee comprises Richard Allan (1959) (Chair), Ian McVeigh (1976), Tim Morrison (1972), Matthew Tobin
(1991) and William Watson (1980). Meetings are attended by the Finance Bursar and the Development Director.
In the past year, we have received information from the Warden about the College’s strategic review and the consequential current spending priorities. We have obtained certain information relating to the College’s control of and accounting for the receipt, investment and disbursement of benefactions (both restricted and unrestricted), and have discussed these matters with the Development Director, the Finance Bursar, the College Accountant and the external auditors. Because Merton College
Charitable Corporation (MC3), which is incorporated in the USA, is a charity independent of the College, we have performed no work in respect of benefactions received by MC3 until they have been transferred by MC3 to the College. We have also reviewed, on a sample basis, a small number of benefactions received by the College (both restricted and unrestricted) to satisfy ourselves that, in each case selected, the relevant funds have been properly recorded to enable disbursements to be made in accordance with the donor’s wishes.
On the basis of the work we have performed, we confirm that nothing has come to our attention that casts doubt on the way in which the receipt, investment and disbursement of benefactions has been controlled and accounted for by the College during the year ended 31 July 2014. We also confirm that the limited number of recommendations made to the College’s Governing
Body in 2013 have been satisfactorily implemented.

Together, regular support from Alumni and Friends of the College enables Merton to maintain and enhance the globally renowned education and research that have benefited so many.
REGULAR GIFTS OR SINGLE
DONATIONS
Regular gifts enable the College to plan ahead and use your donations more effectively. Direct debits can be made monthly, quarterly or annually.
Single donations can be made via most debit and credit cards or by cheque. Please make your cheque payable to ‘Merton College’. We also welcome CAF cheques.
GIVING FROM ABROAD
Tax-efficient giving from a number of countries is possible. Please visit the
Alumni & Friends section of the Merton website or contact the Development
Office for more details about giving from Canada, Hong Kong and many
European countries. Mertonians who are US taxpayers can make fully taxeffective gifts via MC3 (the Merton
College Charitable Corporation).
GIVE AS YOU EARN
Give As You Earn (GAYE), the UK’s largest Payroll Giving scheme, enables you to give tax-free to Merton on a regular basis, directly from your pretax salary or pension. Please ask your employer or pension provider whether they operate GAYE or an alternative
Payroll Giving scheme.
HOW TO MAXIMISE YOUR
GIFT TO MERTON
If you are a UK taxpayer, Merton can claim an extra 25p for every pound donated under the Government’s Gift
Aid Scheme. All you need to do is sign the Gift Aid Declaration section of the donation form when making a gift.
HIGHER-RATE TAXPAYERS CAN
GIVE EVEN MORE EFFECTIVELY
If you are a higher-rate taxpayer you can reclaim an additional portion of tax when you make a gift to Merton. If you pay 40% tax, a donation of £80 will be worth £100 to the College and will cost you just £60. If you pay 45% tax, a donation of £80 will be worth £100 to the College and will cost you just £55.
GIFTS OF SHARES
These are particularly beneficial to donors, as they are free of both
Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax.
LEAVE A LEGACY
We strongly recommend that you consult a solicitor when making or changing your Will. However, a gift made directly to Merton should be worded in your Will as follows:
‘I give to the Warden and Scholars of the House or College of Scholars of Merton in the University of Oxford
(hereinafter called ‘the College’) (£X /
X% of my estate) free of tax, such to be applied to the general purposes of the College towards the promotion of its object, and I direct that the receipt of the Bursar or other authorised officer for the time being of the
College shall be a good and sufficient discharge to my executors for the payment of the aforesaid legacy.’
