School Improvement Meeting Minutes 5/29/13 Maria Greene, Cindy Howell, Jeannie Smith, Janet McMurry, Heather Messer, Joanne Kaluzny, Sue Talley, Nadine Batoyious, Sherri Ennis, Catherine Christ, Glenda Gaukler, Lea Anne Bayless, Kim Bruton, Doug Smith, Natalie Lafferty, Jessica Nava, Pam Jones, and Marguerite Martin 1. School Data: • K– 5th Each grade level showed significant growth with their TRC levels from BOY to MOY. Our teachers do a tremendous job with oral language and moving to the written response. It shows that when we synergize we can make growth, but we also need to focus on maintaining it. Teacher effectiveness is the key to student growth. The data shows great improvements in K-2 but very little improvements in 3-5. So we need to re-examine teacher effectiveness for grades 3-5. We also took in consideration of our transient population and our EC population. Our School Improvement Committee discussed providing a research based program for our students that are not making progress. We discussed using HillReading and Fundations next school year. The close read instructional strategy has proved to be effective in helping our students make gains. We will continue to use this strategy. Our math indicators for each grade level indicate that our students made gains in mclass math. We will try to continue with our resource positions for next year if our student population and teacher allocations match. The team updated our instructional improvement plan for 2013-14 school year: Community Building Staff will model and teach the 7 Habits of Happy Kids daily. Students will complete personal surveys on the 7 Habits each semester. Teachers will help students develop individual reading goals quarterly based on their benchmark or current data; 50% of students will reach their goals. Staff will ensure that classroom disruptions are minimal and that students are engaged 90% of the time using overt responses. Each grade level will participate in a service learning project by April. Teachers will partner with each other to create buddy classrooms and meet bimonthly to share/create service learning projects, read non-fiction articles, and share data notebooks. Students, parents, community volunteers, and staff will participate in perceptions surveys annually. Content Planning Teachers will develop collaborative integrated unit plans using new NC Standard Course of Study monthly (including learning targets, the 7 Habits, thinking maps, rubrics, and technology). Teachers will develop weekly common formative assessments and utilize data to drive intentional small groups Teachers will meet with administrators bi-monthly and grade levels will meet weekly to collaborate on instructional plans to implement the new NC standard course of study, 23 themes of teaching talent ( mental modes, connection, personal relevance, and locale memory), and student progress at least twice a month with administrators and 4 times a month with grade levels. Teachers will include in their lesson plans regular practice with grade level complex text and its academic vocabulary to build students' ability to access more complex text across the content areas 80% of the time. Instruction K-2 math will be delivered in small group instruction 50% of the time. 3-5 math will be delivered in small group instruction 40% of the instructional week. K-2 reading will be delivered in small group instruction 80% of the instructional week. 3-5 reading will be delivered in small group instruction 60% of the instructional week. Staff will utilize appropriate depth of knowledge levels to implement relevant, meaningful, and rigorous instruction to increase levels of inquiry 80% of the time. Teachers will identify learning targets for every instructional lesson 100% of the time. Teachers will use rubrics when applicable for students to self assess their work 50% of the time. Students and staff will track specific performance data utilizing data notebooks weekly (grades 2-5) and bi-weekly (grades K-1). Students will complete fluency drills for reading and math at least 3 times a week. Assessment Learning Students in grades 3-5 will complete formative assessments bi-monthly for math, reading, and science (5th grade only) using Classscapes, Raz, Discovery Tech Book or other supplemental resource. Students will use rubrics when applicable to self assess their work 50% of the time. Students and staff will track specific performance data utilizing data notebooks weekly (grades 2-5) and bi-monthly (grades K-1). Students will record results from fluency drills for reading and math at least 1 time a week. Team Comments from updates: 1. Instructional Improvement Plan: Community Building: Two personal surveys for the year will be changed in the SIP. We will have some kind of computerized reading program to monitor student reading goals. Community service projects will stay with one per grade level for the year and to be completed by April. Buddy classrooms showed to be very successful. Some buddy classes are meeting more often than once a month. Change perception surveys to annually. Content Planning: Teachers will develop collaborative integrated unit plans monthly using the new NC Standard Course of Study. Teachers will meet with administrators every two weeks Instruction: K-2 math 50% of the time 3-5 math 40% of the instructional week K-2 reading small group instruction 80% of instructional week 3-5 reading small group instruction 60% of instructional week Teachers will clearly identify learning targets for every lesson 100% of the time. Students will use rubrics when applicable to assess their work 50% of the time. Students will track performance in their data notebooks every two weeks. Assessment Learning: 5th grade is using classscapes in reading and math evenly. 3rd and 4th are using classscapes more with math than reading. Students will record fluency drills in their data notebooks once a week. (Raz and Tumble Books seems to be more engaging in a station for reading than Classscapes.) You can go onto RAZ for a 7 day trial. We want to keep Scholastic News. How much would it cost to add A to Z Science. We will utilize Discovery Tech Book more often next year. K/1 resources are minimal on Tech Book. 2. Calendar events for the Year: Committees please send dates to Tammy. 3. Leadership Day at the Park: The practice went really well, the students did a great job. Staff can park on the track on Friday morning. We will videotape the performances. K, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th – Grade levels are good! Parent input: Thanks for a great school year. Parents on the committee will be sent a copy of agenda and minutes from meeting. Library – Fuses are being blown because of the air conditioner. The maintenance department is aware and will be repairing. Technology – Everyone will need to change their password for Novell tomorrow morning. Your new password can not be similar to your old one. It has to be one uppercase letter and a symbol. New teacher pages – there are instructions that have been sent out. A new mini workshop will take place next year. Please send your TRC kit, net book, Dibels Next kits, and MClass math kits to Lea Anne. They will be checked off and stored for the summer.
