**Massachusetts
Through the Race to the Top Initiative, teams of educators from across the state
used the UbD Framework to develop more than 100 pre-k to grade 12 model

Assessment Consortia
*Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) – One of the two
national consortia developing assessments of the Common Core Standards. The
website offers information and resources for educators, an interactive project
timeline that illustrates Smarter Balanced activities by school year, and a new enewsletter to stay connected to Smarter Balanced activities.

SBAC has released sets of example questions for grades 3–8 and 11 in both
English language arts/literacy and mathematics to provide a preview of the types
of questions that will be featured in the summative assessment beginning in
2014-15, including selected-response items, constructed-response items,
technology-enhanced items, and performance tasks – extended activities that
challenge students to apply their knowledge and skills to respond to real-world

**English Language Arts Appendix A describes the significance of text
complexity of what students read and the demands in college and workforce
training programs; explains how text complexity can be measured and made a
regular part of instruction.
**English Language Arts Appendix B provides a set of text samples to exemplify
the level of complexity and quality that the Standards require of students in a
given grade band. Sample performance tasks are included here.

for blended learning, funded by the Walmart Foundation, designed to enhance
the literacy skills of struggling readers in grades 5–8. Each uses videos,

Social Studies
The National Council for the Social Studies has developed The College,
Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies State Standards
(2013) address the four core content areas of civics, economics, geography, and
history. These Standards place an intensified emphasis on the four dimensions
of informed inquiry in social studies: (1) developing questions and planning
inquiries; (2) applying disciplinary concepts and tools; (3) evaluating sources and
