Completed Work Make-up Work Due to Absences Helpful Items SPECIFICS ON CURRICULUM Reading The English Language Arts standards encompass reading, writing, speaking and listening. But the shift for ELA (from the old standards to the new Common Core State Standards) emphasizes non-fiction reading, text complexity, and finding text evidence when answering questions. In addition to the Houghton Mifflin reading series, students will be using our district adopted Science and Social Studies texts and other non-fiction resources to develop their language skills. This will be a long term project where they will take the entire writing process from beginning to end with a final project of a book. 3rd Grade will be writing in these genres: Informational Persuasive/Opinion Narrative Short Research Projects ACCELERATED READER Assigned books in reading range based on STAR Reader test done on computer. 10 Week Goals (Marking Period) LITERATURE CIRCLES Children will have opportunities to work with others in their reading range when time permits. They will agree upon a book and pace themselves to read sections. Each one will be given specific tasks to do during that reading and report back with partners when they meet again. SPELLING Monday- The spelling words for the week are presented to the class in a Pre-Test. Thursday- A Trial Test is given. If they get 100%, they are excused from Friday’s test. A schedule with their due dates are included in this packet. The book should be based on the student’s ability level. The genre of literature must be different every month. ! Regular practice with addition, subtraction, time and money is encouraged in class and at home.
