SPECIFICS ON CURRICULUM
Reading
The English Language Arts standards encompass reading, writing, speaking and listening. But the shift for ELA (from the old standards to the new Common Core State Standards)
emphasizes non-fiction reading, text complexity, and finding text evidence when answering
questions. In addition to the Houghton Mifflin reading series, students will be using our
district adopted Science and Social Studies texts and other non-fiction resources to
develop their language skills.

Writing
6 Traits Writing program will be used. Students will regularly engage in the steps
of the writing process including: brainstorming, drafting, revising/editing, and
publishing. Writing will be scored on a rubric for content and mechanics.
Students will be writing Young Author Faire books beginning in January. This will
be a long term project where they will take the entire writing process from
beginning to end with a final project of a book.
3rd Grade will be writing in these genres:
Informational
Persuasive/Opinion
Narrative
Short Research Projects
ACCELERATED READER

when time permits.
They will agree upon a book and pace themselves to read sections. Each
one will be given specific tasks to do during that reading and report back
with partners when they meet again.
SPELLING
Monday- The spelling words for the week are presented to the
class in a Pre-Test.
Thursday- A Trial Test is given. If they get 100%, they are
excused from Friday’s test.

RENAISSANCE HOME CONNECT
Renaissance Home Connect improves
the school-to-home connection by
allowing parents and students to log in to
a website and view their student’s
reading and math practice and progress
towards goals. Access to online
results promotes discussion between
parent and student, which motivates
students and can make reading and
math practice even more effective.
In addition, parents can specify up to six
email addresses to receive automatic
updates on their student’s math and
reading progress.
