Home Learning Guidelines for Year 6 2016 Dear Parents / Guardians, Please find detailed below choices available to your child in an effort to enhance what is being done in the classroom and to also develop their organisational skills in preparation for high school. We understand that the amount of activities recorded will vary week to week, depending on family and extracurricular commitments. SPELLING & VOCAB— Students can do activities online or on paper if their is no internet available. 1. www.spellingcity.com—Children can review weekly spelling sounds on www.spellingcity.com and also play spelling games with their words to reinforce the learning process. You can find your class spelling words by clicking on “Search” - “Schools” and searching for Wallsend South PS/Ken Johnston. The lists will appear and your child can immediately start using it to practise his or her words using the activities on the website. Those students without internet access can log on in the Library at Lunch, or can do their own activities using the sample words. 2. Students can also research and learn their personal list of theme words related to our English novel, History and Science units. Students note down these theme words on their fortnightly home learning sheet. MATHS — Curriculum outcomes and content will be detailed on the fortnightly home learning sheets. 1. We will assign pages from the Home Learning text to match class content. 2. Tables practice is also recommended in whatever format motivates the child (eg. flash cards, dice multiplication, Mathletics activities, uuizzes, puzzles or multiplication grids 3. Mathletics — Students can access appropriate activities related to class content or individual areas of need. READING — 1. Students can access a variety of texts through our Library borrowing program. In addition to uuiet personal reading, shared reading aloud WITH parents and discussion about the text is ideal for students. A variety of fiction and non-fiction texts is recommended (include newspapers and magazines too . Students with remedial needs in Reading may approach their child’s teacher for further resources to support their Reading skills. 2. Reading Express — Students can access appropriate activities related to class content, individual areas of need and interest. RESEARCH TASK CHOICES — A range of extra activities related to classroom activities will be provided to students. Students may complete one or more of the activities listed. How it is presented will be up to the students and is due towards the end of the term.
