NSF Electrical Field Evaluations
NSF is accredited by OSHA as a Nationally Recognized
Testing Laboratory (NRTL) to provide electrical safety
evaluations to various UL standards for a wide range
of electrical equipment. The NRTL determines what
equipment and materials meet consensus-based
standards of safety, as required by OSHA, and that
these products are safe for use in the U.S workplace.
 Evaluations protect your company and employees
 Ensure that the money your organization spends on
the equipment is safe for use
 Demonstrate product safety and reliability
 Decrease the risk of product liability action
 Mitigate the cost of a workplace injury and/or
employee downtime
 Assurance that the equipment adheres
to safety requirements
 Comply with regulation – a local inspector may
require that equipment be evaluated by a NRTL

Who Needs Evaluation?
Has your company installed new or altered any
equipment? If so, NSF’s electrical field evaluation staff
can evaluate the equipment in your facility to ensure
that your company and its equipment are compliant
with OSHA requirements.
What is a Field Evaluation?
A field evaluation is used to evaluate the equipment for
suitability and compliance with OSHA, NFPA, NEC, and
IEEE, looking for the following:
 Listed/Recognized Components
 Wiring Connections
 Internal Wiring
Labeling
 Accessibility of Live Parts
 Electrical Hazards
If a piece of equipment is altered, then it needs a reevaluation, even if it has a UL electrical sticker. Since the
equipment has been tested to specific standards, any
equipment working outside of those standards needs to
be evaluated again as the original UL listing is void.
A field evaluation may still be necessary to ensure your
business complies with OSHA requirements. OSHA
states in section 29 CFR 1910.303 and 1910.399
that all equipment in the workplace must be certified
or evaluated before use. CE Marks are not enough to
guarantee compliance as some manufacturers may use
the CE mark when it is not supported by a technical file
or backed by any competent testing agency.
Electrical Field Evaluation Process
 E-Stop Accessibility
 NSF to walk the area(s) of equipment that
needs to be evaluated
Spacing
 Component Rated Us
 NSF to prepare a quote for the evaluation
 Circuit Protection
 Your organization sends a deposit and/or
purchase order to NSF
 Service Personal
Motors
 NSF to schedule evaluation
 Mechanical Assembly
 NSF will evaluate equipment onsite if all
requirements are met and send test report stating
PASS. If report states FAIL, corrective actions are
needed and NSF will develop a test plan and quote
Grounding/Bonding
 Wire Sizing
Main Requirements
For a piece of equipment to meet NRTL certification,
the main requirements are:
 NFPA 70 E  UL61010
 ANSI Z535.4
 NFPA 79
 UL60204
 29 CFR 1910.303
 UL508A
 NEC Code 2014  29 CFR 1910.399
 If corrections are made and equipment is approved,
NSF will approve the equipment and a test report
stating PASS will be sent to customer
