System Control Overview
PESA Routing Systems Offer Amazing Versatility - PESA routers can adapt to a wide variety of installation environments and applications, and
allow easy system expansion to meet future requirements. In many applications signal transport requirements for a facility may be met with a single router frame;
while others require multiple video routers for transporting large numbers of signals or various signal formats, a DRS audio router to complement the video router or
incorporate various PESA small-scale routers in conjunction with a large Cheetah router. Whatever the requirement, PESA routers are perfectly suited for system
integration and expansion.
Simple Control for An Entire System - Regardless of size or number of system components, PESA router installations function under a single System
Controller to coordinate and oversee operation of the entire system. In the Cheetah family the core control system components are the System Controller
hardware/software, individual Frame Controllers contained in each router frame, a host PC to run the controller software graphical user interface (GUI) application;
plus remote control panels, or a third party controller interface as needed for an individual installation.
PESA Routing Control (PRC) Bus Architecture – PESA System Controllers communicate with Cheetah Matrix Frame Controllers and PESA small
router products, such as the Ocelot and Cougar, over the PRC bus. This proprietary serial bus protocol eases installation of multiple router frames by allowing a
single control bus for all components – you can even daisy-chain the frames from a single controller connection. Programming an entire system is easy using the
GUI software included with the system controller hardware.
Ethernet Connectivity – Ethernet connectivity between system components allows command and control functions over a facility network, or a local
intranet. Networking capability greatly reduces cabling requirements and allows more efficient communications between all system components. Any computer on
the facility network running the Windows® operating system can serve as a system host and become a control point for the router installation. PESA’s PERC2000
System Controller and DRS Audio Router incorporate Ethernet connectivity.
A Controller for Every Application
PERC2000 -
PESA’s PERC 2000 System Controller is bilingual – it speaks both PRC and Ethernet connectivity for use with all PESA routers – including
DRS Audio Router installations. PERC2000 is a high-end system controller that enhances the functionality and feature sets of the 3500PRO while adding
networking capability over a standard 10/100 Ethernet protocol.
3500PRO - The “PRO” system controller communicates with other system components using the PRC bus protocol, and is an economical, yet full-featured
choice for PESA large and medium scale video router installations.
In-Frame Mounting - The hardware portion of either system controller is a plug-in circuit card, and all Cheetah video routers offer mounting slots for
both primary and redundant cards. Mounting the controller card in the video frame saves rack space and simplifies installation. Power is derived from router
power distribution and all system controller connection ports, such as remote control panel buses and the PRC bus for system expansion are available on the
rear panel of the router frame.
Stand-Alone Mounting - Many router installations do not include a Cheetah video router, or in some applications it may be desirable to have the
system controller located external to the router frame. For those facilities, PESA offers both the 3500PRO and PERC2000 controllers in a rack frame with
built-in power supply. Each frame supports two controller cards for full system redundancy. All connection ports are available through rear panel connectors.
Versatile Control Options - PESA offers a large variety of remote control panels for use with either system controller; plus we offer a selection of
protocol converters that allow PESA routing products to be controlled by virtually any third party control system. Our ClikControl application offers TCP/IP
control software that allows virtually any PESA router installation to be controlled from anywhere in the world over the internet.
Incremental Add/Edit - PESA's PERC2000 Controller gives you the ability to make limited modifications to the router configuration file during normal
system operation. We call this feature Incremental Add/Edit, and with it you can add or modify source and destination entries, make changes to many
configuration key lists and add or modify remote control panel lists and data. Configuration changes you make with Incremental Add/Edit are written to system
controller memory and remain a part of the on-board configuration until the file is re-loaded or further modified.
Providing the Tools Necessary to Do the Job - PESA's System Controllers provide the facility engineer all the tools necessary to build a
flexible, intuitive, and scalable control system no matter what the environment. User-friendly control application software provides graphical configuration
menus that enhance system configuration and control panel programming. Easy to follow displays and straight-forward pull down menus guide you through
system setup. Feature setups such as matrix partitioning, tie-line configurations, and multiple frame installations can be done in real time – without taking the
router off-line. All control panels are fully user programmable and easily customized to meet virtually any system application.

3500PRO
PESA’s 3500PRO system controller provides both the hardware and software elements to create a user interface to our line of routing switcher products that
incorporate the time proven PRC communication protocol. Through its user-friendly interface application installed on virtually any personal computer running
the Microsoft Windows® operating system, the 3500PRO offers an extensive, full featured, control architecture that provides maximum versatility for both signal
management and system diagnostics.
The 3500PRO controller system consists of a plug-in circuit board and controller application software for installation on a Windows® based PC. 3500PRO
supports up to 16 levels of control, 32 matrices, 64 tieline interconnects, 128 salvos and up to 1024 source and destination names. The graphical user interface
is highly intuitive, allowing every feature in the system to be accessed quickly and easily.

PERC2000
PESA’s PERC2000 is a high-end System Controller for the PESA family, offering several enhancements, new features and expanded capabilities over the
3500PRO Controller.
PERC2000 is an IP-based system with control capability for PESA routers using the PRC serial bus protocol, but also features 10/100 Ethernet connectivity for
communication with network control devices. The PERC2000 controller system consists of a plug-in circuit board and controller application software for
installation on a host computer running the Microsoft Windows® operating system. PERC2000 supports up to 16 levels of control, 64 matrices, 256 tieline
interconnects, 256 salvos and up to 2,400 source and destination names. It provides diagnostics, matrix segmentation, virtual matrix mapping and
field-updates via Ethernet. The graphical user interface is highly intuitive, allowing every feature in the system to be accessed quickly and easily.
When used with PESA’s DRS distributed audio routing system, it provides a wide range of configuration options including control of audio delay on input
channels and/or output channels, audio phase inversion, or dual channel summing. Built-in test functions allow assignment of audio silence, white noise, 1
kHz tone, or a discrete tone sweep, to any DRS output channel. The PERC2000 comes with four RS232/RS422 serial ports, plus Ethernet communication
interfaces.

PESA Controllers - Advanced Features
Advanced Signal Management for Demanding Applications
Both the 3500PRO and PERC2000 control systems offer high level control and signal management over your entire router installation through an intuitive GUI
interface for all user interaction. Anyone familiar with software applications running under the Microsoft Windows operating system will feel right at home with
PESA’s user-friendly control applications.
PESA system controllers have all the features you would expect, and much more, with advanced matrix management, signal handling and diagnostic
capabilities.
Tieline Management
A tieline is a linkage between levels of control that allows an input on one matrix level to be available to connect to outputs on another matrix level. Tielines offer
a significant advantage with the ability to make all sources on a router available through a specific physical connection between dissimilar matrix signal types.
For example, tielines are a simple way to connect remote matrices together, allowing the system to be treated as one large multi-format system. Once a tieline
has been setup, it becomes a dedicated interconnect and may then be used by any assigned source. The GUI control menu provides an easy-to-manage grid
representation for tielines allowing quick status and administrative override capabilities.
Virtual Matrix Mapping
Virtual Matrix Mapping is a software configurable method of setting logical crosspoint definitions within a physical matrix. Using Virtual Matrix Mapping
crosspoints can be assigned on an as-needed basis. One physical matrix can contain more than one virtual matrix. A specific application for Virtual Matrix
Mapping would be to create sources and destinations only on switching levels where they are actually used. Levels which are not used are available to create
other sources and destinations, thereby maximizing use of the matrix. Further flexibility is provided by allowing sources to share inputs.
Matrix Breakup/Segmentation
For systems requiring non-traditional video such as RGB, Y/C, YPbPr, and other multi-level signal formats, PESA controllers allow the router to be segmented into
smaller matrices. As an example, a single Cheetah 256X256 frame can be configured as up to four 64X64 routers for different signal formats.
Salvo
The Salvo function allows users to change crosspoints on multiple destinations from a single Take operation. Advanced configuration parameters for Source,
Destination, and Levels can be setup to simplify pushbutton operations when simultaneous crosspoint switches must be taken together. PESA controllers allow
the user to easily configure up to 256 Salvos (128 for the 3500PRO) through the Salvo setup command. Easy to navigate selection boxes offer the ability to
point-and-click or drag-and-drop for multiple selections.
Remote Control Panel Configuration
Software control panel menus allow you to setup panel configuration information such as source/destination assignments, addressing, and lock/protect functions.
Each type of remote control panel has its own graphical panel setup menu to easily select and identify which button assignments are given. Each panel configuration menu allows you to choose settings for panel specifics, access listing, data key definitions, and salvo definitions. Panel configurations for similar type panels
can be duplicated by a simple mouse click and shared data key listings can be shared between different panels using a copy and paste command.
Status
The Status Window allows you to check status on several different control aspects of the control system. Along the top of the main menu screen, Icons are located
to select Matrix Status, Tieline Status, Presets, Salvos, Communications, and other diagnostic windows. Information shown in each window automatically updates
as changes occur, providing immediate feedback as to the integrity and health of the router system.
Diagnostics
Diagnostic functions enable the user to obtain crosspoint readback and matrix control status, as well as perform diagnostics on a selected matrix. Features like
readback and confidence status verify the operation of the matrix control to the physical crosspoint. Other functions of diagnostics include All Call, Diagonals, and
Physical Switching.

Remote Control Panels
PESA offers a wide variety of remote control panels that afford users easy access to switching functions through the 3500PRO or PERC2000 controllers.
Control panels communicate with either system controller over a serial data bus called the PESA Remote Control Panel (RCP) bus. Each controller allows up
to four RCP bus branches, and each branch allows multiple remote control panels to be daisy-chained for easy installation. Panels range from a simple
push-button configuration to a complete status display control panel that allows multi-level, multi-bus operation. Monitor display panels are available for
monitor and remote station labeling. Our port expanders allow the addition of up to 8 branches of the PESA Router Control (PRC) Bus or the serial remote
control panel (RCP) bus.
RCP X/Y Panels
PESA’s line of X/Y remote control panels includes a full range of features to accommodate virtually any user requirements. Most panels can be configured for
single bus or full X-Y control, making them extremely user friendly; and all panels in the series are completely programmable through the system controller
GUI application. LCD displays are easy to read and provide the user with a direct readout of switching status. Our X/Y range of panels can be configured to
work with multiple levels of control; depending on the size of the router and the number of levels of control. Panels come in either 1RU or 2RU.
RCP X/Y panels can initiate LOCK or PROTECT functions directly from the panel. The LOCK feature prohibits changes to the selected destination and the
PROTECT feature allows a panel to set-up exclusive use of a destination. The panels also support a source, destination, and salvo limiting control feature,
permitting the user to configure the panel so as to allow or deny access to selected router sources. Power is provided from a standard 9VDC wall plug.
Standard function keys include Preset, Level, Destination, Salvo, Take, and Chop.

PESA’s unique MLTP2 remote control panel offers full
matrix control, multi-level switching and direct “TAKE”
capability in a variety of styles and mounting options.
The basic MLTP2 is a 2RU, half-rack width console
mount panel with rack style mounting ears. It’s ideal for
mounting in a table or operator station. A full-rack width
mount version is available, and you can choose
whether the control panel is attached to the right side or
left side of the rack extension. Yet another variation of
this versatile panel provides two fully independent
MLTP2 control panels mounted side-by-side in a 2RU,
full-width rack mount. There is also a desktop version,
with the basic half-width panel mounted in a decorative
enclosure with finished wood end-caps.

PESA’s RCP-GPI/JS (General Purpose Input/Joystick)
GPI/JS
is a 32 position, multi-programmable control panel that
may be operated as a standard remote control panel
from the front panel pushbuttons, or may be operated
by remote contact closures through the General
Purpose Input (GPI) connectors on the rear panel. The
panel stores up to 4 pages of 32 button assignments,
for a total of 128 possible pushbutton selections. Configuration for remote contact operation
is easily accomplished through the System Controller GUI application. You may configure the
panel to latch remote closures through the GPI ports, or to momentarily select a source when
configured for joystick operation. Pushbutton assignments are easily accessible allowing
quick button-per-source switching with Lock/Protect feature. An easy to read LCD display
provides backlit readout of Preset, Program and Preview status. The RCP-GPI/JS panel may

PESA’s Panel Port Expander adds additional
branches to the RS485 Remote Control Panel (RCP)
bus from a single system controller. The RCP bus
protocol allows daisy-chain connection of multiple
remote control panels from the system controller;
however, it is often desirable, for cable routing or other
purposes, to have multiple RCP buses within a facility.
The Panel Port Expander provides this capability by
creating two individual 1X4 data switches for the RCP
communication bus, allowing up to eight branches of
the RCP bus from a single system controller. The
1RU box is designed to mount near the system
controller chassis and isolate cable runs returning to
the controller from equipment on the bus. Individual
LEDs on the front panel display status for bus transmit
and receive connections, as well as error and poweron status.

PESA’s 3500 PRO System Controller offers three convenient installation options for the circuit card portion of the controller system:
When the 3500PRO is used in conjunction with a Cheetah Video Router, the router frame provides two mounting slots – one for a primary card, and the second for
installing a second card for system control redundancy. When mounted in the Cheetah frame, power for the controller card is derived from the router’s power
supply modules. If you have additional PESA routers in the facility, such as a Cougar 3, Ocelot 3, or other PESA routers that communicate over the PRC bus, these
can all be interconnected through the controller card mounted in the router frame. All required connections for system expansion are easily accessed from the rear
of the router frame.

Used in installations where a Cheetah frame is not available, PESA offers two styles of rack mount chassis frames for the 3500 PRO:
An Available 1RU frame supports a single
controller card and derives power from an

external power supply. Two power connectors
are provided on the chassis rear panel to support
a redundant power installation. With its small
size, the single System Controller frame can fit in
virtually any location in your facility. All external

PESA’s 2 RU System Controller chassis supports up to two
3500 PRO circuit cards and two internal power supply
modules. A basic external controller system would consist of
a single 3500 PRO controller card, plus a single power supply.
You can add a second controller card and a second power
supply module for full control system redundancy. A single
power supply module can power two controller cards. If your
system has only a primary controller card, you can add a
second power supply module for power redundancy. As with
the single controller chassis, all external connections are
easily accessible from the chassis rear panel.
