Newsletter
Dear Parents, Caregivers, Staff and Students
This is the last newsletter for this term. Please
take the time to read it as it contains important
information for members of the school community,
as well as acknowledging and celebrating the
outstanding achievements of our students. The
first newsletter for Term 3 will be emailed home on
Thursday, 29th July 2010.
Retirement of the Principal
I have decided to retire from Marryatville High
School and the Department of Education &
Children’s Services from the end of this school
term. Ms Kerry Friedrichs, who has had 13 years
experience at Marryatville High School in senior
leadership positions, has been appointed Principal
for Term 3. I have written to each Parent and
Caregiver advising them of my decision.
The last 6½ years as Principal at Marryatville High
School has been the most professionally rewarding
and personally enjoyable of my career. I have
appreciated the opportunity to work with students
who are optimistic, enthusiastic and committed to
doing their best. I have taken great pride in their
achievements. I have been privileged to work with
teachers and support staff who meet the highest
professional standards and believe that their
generosity with their discretionary time is one of the
factors that has built and sustained our tradition of
excellence.

I would like to express my appreciation for the
effort of members of our school community,
particularly parents and caregivers. The
enthusiasm of our students to come along and
engage positively with what we have to offer at
school in a way that makes each day enjoyable
is a strong reflection of the values and attitudes of
their parents. I thank you for your support over the
last 6½ years.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge both current
and past students of Marryatville High School. They give us cause for great optimism for the future
and have played a major role in making my 6½
years truly memorable.

Art News 2010
Issue 6 July 2010
So far I have had a wonderful experience and am
looking forward to promoting the school’s arts into the
wider local community. I would also like to welcome
Esther Paraskevas who has been teaching Visual Art
here for the past semester. We have had an exciting
first semester with many events happening. Grandparents Day in Term 1
enabled families to take part
in information talks and tours
through the Art rooms to view the
wonderful work produced by our
Year 8 students.
On Tuesday 25th May the Art Department had a
visit from the Principal, a group of teachers and
administrative staff from Qingdao No. 17 Middle
School (China). Ms Jane Whitelock conducted a
lesson in Aboriginal art to her Year 8 art class and
the Chinese Tour Group. Ms Jiao Aidong, an English
Teacher, translated the lesson for the Principal Mr An
Bozen. Students and visitors learnt about Aboriginal
Culture, dot painting, sacred symbols and The
Dreaming. Ms Whitelock used skills that she was
taught previously by an Aboriginal elder in Ceduna.
The students and visitors watched a demonstration
of dot painting techniques and all were involved in
creating their own Boomerangs. Mr Li Yan and Ms Liu
Xuanqi (Directors of News Office) and Mr Li Huimin
(Physics Teacher) all thoroughly enjoyed the workshop
and the art tour.
At the end of the lesson Ms Lyn Rowberry, Art
Coordinator, presented the group of Chinese visitors
with some outstanding examples of Marryatville High
Schools’ student work to take back to Qingdao.
Throughout Term 2 and 3, our ‘Gifted and Talented’
Arts program has been running and there are many
students who have enrolled. Outstanding Year
8, 9 and 10 students were selected by their art
teachers to further their art skills during Term 1. The
selected students are working with practicing artists
in 3 areas of interest for ten 1 hour after-school
sessions. The following practicing artists are working
with our students; Claire Cooke is teaching Pastel
drawing, Katia Carletti is teaching Oil Painting and
Jan Twyerould is teaching Pottery/Ceramics. Work
produced throughout these workshops will be exhibited
in the Annual November Marryatville High School Art
Exhibition.

The Open Day in Term 2 was very successful and
showcased many of the artworks created by our current
art students and enabled families and new students to
see the exciting art produced here. Year 11 and year
12 students willingly gave their personal time to attend
and demonstrated their artistic abilities to visitors. This
was a fantastic event that was enjoyable all round.
We extend an invitation to all parents, students and
community members to experience an evening of arts
at the Annual Art Exhibition Opening and Twilight
Concert on Friday 19th November in The Forge. Hope to see you there!

Term 2 has been a very long term
and of course very busy. A tour,
senior exams, three major concerts
and smaller events were run to
great acclaim and with positive
outcomes for all.
Primary Schools Concert at the Forge Term 2
Report by: Jasmine Lim (primary schools music liaison)
Marryatville music students did it again with great style
and incredible musical skill at the recent concert primary
schools concerts in week 7 and week 9. The band
concert in week 7 featured the year 8/9 Junior Band led
by Kerry Hewett and Big Band III led by Jasmin Bowden.
The two bands performed music ranging from classical
to jazz and popular television themes which were very
well received by the young primary school audiences
from Rose Park, Marryatville and Loreto College. In week
9, the School Orchestra led by head of music, Aldis Sils
presented an excellent selection of orchestra favourites
such as Sibelius’ Finlandia and Brahms’ Hungarian
Dance no. 6. In addition to the exciting orchestral music,
Joshua Oates, Stephanie Callisto and Mitchell Faulkner
gave stunning solos on their instruments.
A short demonstration on various instruments by students
made the concert interactive as well as informative. Each
year, Marryatville High School presents a series of 3
primary school concerts in Semester One. These concerts
not only promoted Marryatville High school as a special
music hub but also introduced primary schools to the
world of instrumental music that they would never have
seen before.
Orchestral concert - Sounds of Winter
It was a dark and stormy night…. and there was wonderful
music emanating from The Forge!
The Orchestral concert was a great success this year. The
program was full of wonderful music played with enthusiasm
and at a high level. The School Orchestra began the concert
with two exciting and challenging works conducted by Aldis
Sils: Finlandia by Sibelius and Danse Infernale by Stravinsky.
This was followed by the Junior Orchestra which performed
Two South American Tangos conducted by Sam Hordern and
The Muppet Medley conducted by Jasmin Bowden.
After the interval the Early Music Ensemble performed the 1st
Movement of Haydn’s Concerto No. 4 in F major. This group
was formally known as the Baroque ensemble, but as its
repertoire has extended to include the Classical Period it was
felt that it needed to change its name also.
The Chamber Orchestra performed the 1st movement of
Handel’s Concerto Grosso No. 10 with oboe soloist Joshua
Oates. The ensemble was confidently led by Jaqueline Carias
and director Anna Webb helped out by playing with the
viola section. Their second work was three movements of
Holsts’ Brook Green Suite.
The concert ended with the future of the string program - the Studio Strings conducted by Reg Chapman. They Performed A Renaissance Suite for Orchestra, Faeries an arrangement of the Sugar Plum Fairy and a Chitty Chitty
Bang Bang medley.

Moving Opera - Meg Bate
In week nine, Opera Queensland bought their Moving
Opera to Adelaide. Amongst the 28 High School
students spending the week learning about opera,
were many Marryatville students. There we learned all
about movement, character development, improvisation,
breathing techniques, chorus and opera singing. Three
singers, a pianist and a director helped us incorporate
all we had learned about drama and movement into
2 opera pieces and a musical theatre piece we also
learned during the week-long workshop. These were
performed in a concert on Friday night at the Odeon
Theatre. Everyone had a fantastic week learning new
skills, making new friends and developing a new love for
opera.

From the Wellbeing Team
Issue 6 July 2010
2010 Wellbeing Initiatives
The Marryatville High School
Wellbeing team is comprised
of parents, students and staff. It meets approximately three
times per term and is active in
promoting a range of wellbeing
initiatives across the school
community.
The following projects are currently underway:
• “Positive Post Cards” featuring positive messages and
student art work with a “wellbeing theme”. A series
of drafts have been developed for consultation. Upon
completion, staff will be issued with multiple copies to
be used for providing positive feedback to students,
colleagues or parents. • Parent Information Forum - planning is currently underway
for a “Coping with School and Adolescence” parent
forum on the 9th September 2010. A range of expert
guest speakers have been invited to provide information
on topics such as Adolescent Eating, Sleeping, Mental
Health, Relationships & Internet Use. • Positive Screen Savers & Internet Links - a series of positive
screen saver messages will be developed for display
on all curriculum computers. Links to a range of Youth
Information And Support Agencies (ie Beyond Blue,
Headroom, Kids Help Line) will also appear on the school
website and student login/ home page.
• Student Life Program -the Student Life Program occurs each
Monday and Thursday during extended Home Group. Students are involved in a range of activities leading up
to and including the development of their SACE Personal
Learning Plan. During Term 3 students will provide
feedback about this program. The Wellbeing Team will
use this information to make recommendations about
topics for inclusion at each Year Level, in the Student Life
Program.
• Newsletter Column - a regular column from “the
Wellbeing Team” appears in the newsletter providing
parents with information, resources and support on a
range of youth wellbeing issues.
• Learner Wellbeing Inquiry - during 2009 a group of
volunteer staff participated in an inquiry which allowed
them to reflect on their teaching through a wellbeing lens.
The inquiry involved the collection of data through a series
of observations of students at work in classrooms, and
the completion of student perception surveys. This work
will continue during 2010 as we look to establish some
baseline data across the whole school with regard to the
links between teaching pedagogy and student wellbeing
and engagement.
• Staff Wellbeing Activities - a portion of staff meeting
time per term is dedicated to Staff Wellbeing. During
Term two staff were involved in a range of activities,
organised by the Wellbeing Team, including Yoga,
Walking, International Movie, Bocce, Tennis and
Badminton.
If you would like to be involved in any of the above or have
some ideas for new wellbeing initiatives, new members to the
Wellbeing Team are always welcome. Similarly if you would
like particular topics addressed at the Parent Forum “Coping
with School & Adolescence”, please contact either Jenny
Hunter or myself on 83048420. • “On a positive note….” stickers, have also been
developed. These will be placed in student diaries
as an informal way to recognise achievement and/or
provide positive feedback to students / parents.

SRC
As part of the Student Representative Council, we would like to let you know what we have been up too, as well as
informing everyone of upcoming events and the latest news.
Casual Clothes Day
Firstly, we’d like to let every one know that casual day was a huge success! It was also great to see many students
wearing their odd socks to school. Thank you every one for your donations, they all added up. We raised exactly
$923 with a cheque being made out to the Royal Society of the Blind. Together we are making a difference and
helping those in need. Keep up the good work.
Books for Nepal
Don’t forget to bring along any books you no longer want or need! Go digging around for those old books sitting
away in a corner, or at the bottom of that untouched drawer…and bring them along too school. You will most likely
be doing your family a favour (by removing some extra clutter) and you’ll also doing a favour for a special some one
overseas! For those of you who don’t know, our school is currently sponsoring a child in Nepal. Giving over second
hand books is an easy task, and will mean a lot. Until the end of this term, your SRC representatives will be collecting
the books in home group, or you can hand your books to them in person. This is an excellent opportunity to give a
gift to some one who wouldn’t otherwise receive it from you, so don’t miss your chance!
Planning Day
The SRC is continually trying to achieve the best for our school and community. We take time out of our own day
to meet and have discussions. Aside from our regular school-based meetings, SRC conducts various out-of-school
activities. Just recently a number of SRC reps walked to Burnside Library for a Planning day. Here, we did a number
of things: At the start we made sure every one was comfortable by building relationships as we played interactive
games. Then after the fun, we got to work. Splitting into groups, we all had a different topic to focus on. Each
topic related to something that the students would benefit from, including the exciting topic of ‘Big Day In’. We
brainstormed strategies and ideas with the group we were working as well as taking notes and assigning members
for each task, to make each project work. After we got the opportunity to bond with one another, as we sat together
having a delicious afternoon tea. The day worked really well and we definitely achieved a lot in our time there.
We look forward to sharing more news with you and including updates about our progress!
