Wondrous Word Wall

AZZ Galvanizing Services - Arizona
Glimmering in the heat of the Arizona sun, the Wondrous Word
Wall greets visitors as they enter the Wheeler Taft Abbett Sr.
Public Library. The wall, consisting of three 3’ x 6’ roll-formed
galvanized steel panels, is a tribute to the words and phrases
imprinted on the minds of readers everywhere. More than 1,000
words are inscribed in varied fonts and sizes across the panels,
entreating the eye to wander across phrases plucked from timeless
tomes such as the Bible and Shakespearean literature, and other
sources such as Uncle Tom’s Cabin and Danielle Steele novels
- even the words of Dr. Spock.
The creator of the Wondrous Word Wall wanted to ensure his
work would live on as a timeless piece, unmarred by the unsightly
and damaging effects of corrosion. He knew the long life and durability of
hot-dip galvanized (HDG) steel would serve to protect the Wall for future
generations of visitors. Also, expensive alternatives such as stainless steel
made little sense given the economic advantage of galvanizing.
Working with such an intricately designed piece of steel, the galvanizer
anticipated the need for extra personnel throughout the galvanizing process
to guarantee a quality coating. The panels were handled with great care, and
they now stand as a lasting tribute to language of all types. The words featured
in the piece consist of 74% English, 24% Spanish, and 2% O’dham.
The HDG steel protects the structure from the damaging effects of the
strident Arizona sun, as well as the light condensation that gathers during
the night hours. In the evening, the Wall is illuminated by three powerful
LED lights. Fuchsia, purple, aqua, yellow, lime, and green rays radiate over

Harley Davidson Museum
Milwaukee, Wisconsin
AZZ Galvanizing Services - Dixon
AZZ Galvanizing Services - Joliet
One can almost hear the ripping, throaty roar of a Harley Davidson
motorcycle upon viewing the industrial, frank steel structure of the
Harley Davidson Museum in Milwaukee. A metal, modern tribute to
this American icon, the 130,000 square foot museum is located on the
shores of the Menomonee River on a 20-acre reclaimed industrial site.
Rather than find a decorative skin for the buildings comprising the
museum, the designers turned to the motorcycles themselves for
inspiration. Durability, long-life, quality – hot-dip galvanized steel
encompasses all of these ideals, making it the natural selection
to serve as an honest representation of the elements of Harley
Davidson engineering.
The architecture of the museum reveals
exposed I-beams, columns, gusset plates and cross bracing, all open
to the harsh effects of sun, snow, and rain. Hot-dip galvanized steel
will withstand these tough elements, providing maintenance-free
protection from the damaging effects of corrosion, both structurally
and aesthetically.
With 2.5 million pounds of steel galvanized, good communication between
the designers, fabricator, and galvanizer resulted in a smooth process
with a quality product. Quick turnover and enormous savings compared
to rendering the same look with paint sweetened the deal, as well. Now,
this $75 million galvanized structure will stand as a durable, corrosionfree homage to Harley Davidson history, culture, and engineering.

Columbus Division of Fire Tower
Columbus, Ohio
V&S Columbus Galvanizing LLC
The Columbus Division of Fire Tower was in need of a
makeover. Used as a training structure for the Fire Academy,
this lofty brick structure adorned with steel ladders, railings,
and treads had been exposed to its fair share of sun, water,
and even fire damage. When fire inspectors mentioned the
state of affairs during a routine visit, a local steel fabricator
and galvanizer stepped up to help ensure the safety of the
firefighters by donating their services.
Smooth railings and a quality zinc coating finish were necessary
for this project, so cadets in training do not get hurt or cut when
their focus is on simulated fires. With more than 25,000 pounds
of hot-dip galvanized steel, the refurbished structure can now
withstand the abuse of destructive elements such as rain and
fire. Thanks to the durable and maintenance-free corrosion
protection of the zinc coating, the Academy will be able to use
and reuse the training building for decades to come without
spending more money on refurbishments or maintenance.

Valmont Coatings - Calwest Galvanizing
The Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, one
of the top three hospitals in the nation, is the
newest hospital to be added to the UCLA medical
complex. It is built to the highest standard of
quality, including being one of the first buildings
in California to be built to the most recent seismic
standard – able to withstand an 8.0 magnitude
earthquake.
With such great attention to protecting the
structural stability of the building, it is natural
hot-dip galvanized steel was incorporated in the
design. The exposed steel from canopies, hand
rails, grating and some external fascia were all
galvanized, then given the additional protection
of a coat of paint – a combination known as a
duplex system.
Located a mere five miles from the Pacific Ocean, the medical
center is regularly exposed to a harsh environment of extreme heat
and fog; however, a duplex system utilizing hot-dip galvanizing will
provide unparalleled corrosion protection from the damaging effects
of sun and sea. Not only will the duplexed steel receive the benefit
of the inherent cathodic protection provided by the intermetallic and
free-zinc layers of a hot-dip galvanized coating, but it will also have
the additional barrier protection provided by a coat of paint.
This method of corrosion protection is not only preferable because of
its durability, but also for its aesthetic appeal. Utilizing a duplex system
gives the specifier both the superior protection of hot-dip galvanized

Zoneguard
Columbus, Ohio
V&S Columbus Galvanizing LLC
In place of the typical concrete barrier system
found along the highways of Columbus, the new
hot-dip galvanized steel Zoneguard harbors great
potential for use in future road systems. Similar
in shape to conventional concrete barriers, the
Zoneguard system is lighter and easier to install.
It also allows up to 10 times the number of linear
feet to be shipped on a semi-truck to the job site,
making turnaround quicker and cheaper than
concrete.
The steel pieces were engineered with special
design considerations to guard against distortion,
and a smooth coating and cleaned machine fittings
were crucial to the success of this project. As a
piece that may be leased or sold several times,
the durability of hot-dip galvanized steel was of great importance. The protection of hot-dip galvanizing greatly reduces the
touch-up and maintenance required between leases. Thus, galvanized steel not only made this project more economical
initially than its competitors, it also means the owner will spend less on maintenance and upkeep in the long term.

Cotton Bowl Renovation
Dallas, Texas
AZZ Galvanizing Services - Crowley
The original home of the Dallas Cowboys football
team, the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas, has
recently benefitted from a $50 million project
adding 28,000 additional seats. The addition of
an upper deck in each end zone, completing the
oval bowl, has lifted the stadium capacity to the
ninth largest in the country.
The fabricator, who uses hot-dip galvanized steel
for nearly 100% of their projects, knew galvanizing
the structure would protect the stadium from the
unsightly and potentially hazardous effects of
corrosion in the exposed outdoor location. With
a capacity of more than 90,000, safety is key,
and hot-dip galvanized steel provides superior
protection against the corrosion that can leave
a stadium structurally unsound.
Quick turnaround was necessary for this project, as a specific delivery schedule had to be met at the job site. More than
200 tons of galvanized steel made this high-profile project a safe, gleaming, attractive place to enjoy Texas football.

Muni Metro LRV Maintenance
& Operations Facility
San Francisco, CA
AZZ Galvanizing Services - Crowley
Located near the AT&T Ballpark in San Francisco, the
Metro East Maintenance shop and storage yard was
required to support the 3rd Street Light Rail System
extension, as well as provide additional maintenance
capability to Muni’s existing trolley system. The humid,
salty Bay Area climate made hot-dip galvanized steel
the obvious choice for superior corrosion protection in
such an aggressive environment.
Though the initial cost was competitive with paint,
the life-cycle cost of the project revealed hot-dip
galvanizing to be overwhelmingly more economical.
Because hot-dip galvanizing requires little or no
maintenance for 50+ years, there is no need to spend
money on constant repairs and touch-up. As the centenary trusses, angles, and beams are critical to keeping the electrical
cables and lighting supported, galvanizing will provide uninterrupted service for the maintenance facility.
Also, in keeping with the green effort of mass transit, hot-dip galvanized steel is the only corrosion protection system that
is 100% recyclable. No maintenance means fewer pollutants are emitted over the life span of the structure – making
galvanized steel both a wallet and earth-friendly solution to corrosion protection for this facility.

Valley Metro Light Rail System
Phoenix, AZ
AZZ Galvanizing Services - Arizona
Speeding along under the hot Arizona sun, the
Valley Metro Light Rail System is one of the largest
infrastructure projects ever undertaken in the region.
A valuable investment in the Valley’s future, the light
rail was needed to meet the growing transportation
needs of the greater Phoenix area; in fact, a fullyloaded light rail car can take as many as 180 cars
off the road, while a three-car train could take the
equivalent of 540 cars off the road.
As the population of Phoenix continues to grow, cost
effective, low-maintenance facilities such as the light
rail are critical. Utilizing a duplex system, the Valley
Metro will benefit from the superior, maintenancefree corrosion protection of hot-dip galvanized steel
as well as the added barrier protection of a paint
coat. A duplex system means the light rail did not
have to sacrifice corrosion protection to have each
station painted according to a color scheme.
Because the galvanizer provided marshalling space
and accommodated the application of the duplex
coating at his facility, the fabricator saved time and
money, allowing an efficient and timely delivery of
materials to the job site.
Hot-dip galvanized steel
will ensure the light rail will remain a beautiful and
functional mass transit system for decades. Utilizing
an aesthetically pleasing duplex system will also
provide an extended paint maintenance cycle for the
light rail system, saving Valley Metro and Arizona
taxpayer’s money.

Intrepid
Manhattan, New York
V&S Amboy Galvanizing LLC
Standing strong and stalwart in the Hudson River,
the USS Intrepid has undergone a $60 million
restoration from 2006 - 2008. Faced daily with the
lapping brine and searing sunshine of a salt-water
environment, corrosion is imminent without the
superior protection of hot-dip galvanized steel.
With all towers and gangways, as well as roof truss
assemblies, and guardrailing hot-dip galvanized, 450
tons of Intrepid’s steel will remain structurally safe
and aesthetically pleasing to visitors for decades.
Additionally, galvanized steel is maintenance-free,
meaning no need to close down operation for tedious
touch-ups and repair.
This project required quick turnaround due to a tight,
demanding project schedule – and galvanizing accommodated this requirement. The towers were assembled in an offsite
location and subsequently transported to the site after being fully erected. A large 500 foot water crane lifted the towers
onto the imposing iron maiden. Galvanized steel will keep the Intrepid structurally sound and ship-shape for generations
to come.

Morningside Pedestrian Bridge
Cambridge, Ontario
Pure Metal Galvanizing
Arcing for more than a half-mile over one of the
busiest highways in Canada, the Morningside
Pedestrian Bridge provides cyclists and pedestrians
access to the Trans Canada Trail between
Cambridge and Kitchener in Ontario. The arching
metallic spine of the bridge reaches 25 feet at its
highest point, allowing more than 50,000 motorists
to pass underneath on Highway 401 each day.
Originally proposed as a nondescript, mesh
enclosed cage-like structure, the plan for the bridge
was decried as an eyesore by the community and
local officials. Regional Councilor Jean Haalboom
pronounced the original bridge would be seen as
“Ontario’s largest chicken coop.” After consulting
with the community, a team of architects, engineers,
and landscape artists was assembled to reconfigure
the bridge into its current aesthetically pleasing design.
With a price tag of CAN $1.7 million, the city desired an aesthetically pleasing
structure that would require little or no maintenance and last for generations of
hikers, bikers, and pedestrians to enjoy. Utilizing hot-dip galvanized steel for
the structural elements of the bridge will protect the structure from the unsightly
and potentially hazardous effects of corrosion, while the zinc coating will remain
maintenance-free for decades.
Durability was especially important when considering the future of the bridge.
Conestoga College, Ontario’s number one ranked public college, is located directly
on the west side of the Highway 401 and the Morningside Pedestrian Bridge. With
