8 Channel Digital Amplifier: AMP-8040-00
Description
The AMP-8040 is an ultra-efficient Class D digital
amplifier delivering 8 channels of amplification rated at 40
watts per channel at 8 ohms in a 2U rack-space metal
enclosure. It is an ideal amplifier for distributed audio
applications.
The AMP-8040 complements Savant’s distributed audio
solutions and are fine-tuned for any listening environment
using the independent gain controls.
The audio sense mode provides energy savings by
automatically detecting an audio signal on an individual
channel basis and turning the specific zone on. The
amplifier is in standby mode when there is no audio
signal present at any of the eight inputs.
For added installation reliability the AMP-8040 features
screw terminal speaker connections, supporting up to 14gauge speaker wire.

Distributed Audio Application
The AMP-8040 is an ideal 4 zone multi-room amplifier, as shown in the next figure, when paired with a Savant distributed
audio solution. A distributed audio solution is defined by the number of listening zones. Within a listening zone you can
only listen to a single audio source at a time—for example, internet radio, CD, or music server.
An audio source can be played in a single room or a group of rooms (party mode). When designing your distributed audio
system, take into account who will use the system and how they will use it. For instance, you may wire your den for
background music and your living room for both stereo and surround sound.
A distributed audio system allows different sources to be heard in each of the zones (rooms), simultaneously and
independently. The next figure shows 4 audio sources connected to the Savant SSA-4004 distributed audio platform with
4 stereo preamps and 4 stereo outputs connected to the AMP-8040 for a 4 x 4 audio distribution solution (using an
external trigger connection.)

Wiring Considerations
The AMP-8040 connects to your Savant distributed audio solution using shielded line level audio cables with RCA phono
plugs. High quality RCA cables must be used to connect the multi-room audio preamp to the amplifier inputs.
The AMP-8040 connects to your speakers using 2-conductor speaker wire. For most applications, Savant recommends
using 16 or 18 gauge wire. For wiring runs longer than 80 feet Savant recommends using 14-gauge wire. Each channel
features a removable screw terminal speaker connection for easy installation in tight spaces. The terminal connector can
accommodate up to 14-gauge stranded speaker wire.
Bare speaker wire can be split so that at least two inches of each conductor are separated, twisted together, and inserted
into the appropriate screw terminal speaker connection.

Protection Modes
The AMP-8040 provides three protection modes. Note that the AMP-8040 does not shut down in a protection mode; only
the faulty zone/channel is disabled.
Central Potential Protection Mode (LED indication)
The central potential protection mode is the only mode that activates the Protection LEDs on the front panel. This mode is
more commonly known as the DC potential protection mode and is designed to protect the connected speakers from any
DC voltage that is output from the AMP-8040.
When the central potential protection mode is activated, the LED for that respective channel will be turned on (Red).
When a channel is in the central potential protection mode, other active channels will remain operational unless they are
in a protection mode. After the fault is fixed, the AMP-8040 will automatically restart the disabled zone/channel.
Speaker Short Protection Mode (no LED indication)
This mode will disable a zone/channel until the fault is fixed. After the fault is fixed, the AMP-8040 will automatically restart
the disabled zone/channel.
Overload Protection Mode (no LED indication)
This mode will disable a zone/channel until the fault is fixed. After the fault is fixed, the AMP-8040 will automatically restart
the disabled zone/channel.

Selectable Turn-on Mode
The turn-on mode switch determines when and how the amplifier will turn on. This switch provides three options for
turning the AMP-8040 on and off.
Constant – Power state of the amp is controlled via the front panel master power button:
• IN - Amplifier is powered ON (Sensing circuitry active)
• OUT - Amplifier is Off (Sensing circuitry inactive)
Audio Sense – Zone/Channel power state is controlled via the source inputs:
• The master power button on the front panel must be in the On position.
• Zone/Channel turns on when an audio signal higher than -46dB is present on both L/R
inputs for the zone.
• Zone/Channel turns off after 5 min. when an audio signal lower than -46dB or no signal is
present on both L/R inputs for the zone.
• Amplifier goes into standby mode if no signal is present on any zone/channel for 5
minutes.
3-24V AC/DC Voltage Trigger – Power state of the amp is controlled via an external trigger
(Savant GPIO):
• The master Power Button on the front panel must be in the On position.
• Amplifier will turn On when the voltage trigger input receives a 3-24V signal
• Amplifier will be placed into Standby Mode when the 3-24V signal is removed.
Voltage Trigger
The voltage trigger mode allows you to configure the amplifier to turn on automatically. The voltage trigger mode is
selected using the three-position slide button (Turn-on-Mode Switch) and assumes the following conditions:
• The master Power Button on the front panel must be in the ON position.
• The amplifier is in Standby Mode without a 3-24V AC or DC being applied to the voltage trigger input.
• Once the sensing circuitry detects a voltage, all adjacent pairs of amplifier channels receiving an audio signal turn On.
• Once the voltage stops, the sensing circuit instantly places the amplifier into Standby Mode.
• Voltage triggers can be supplied by Savant control platforms or third-party AV equipment.
NOTE: A DC wall adapter must not be used. The long discharge time of the DC adapter’s filter capacitor will delay placing
the amplifier into standby mode.

Rack Mounting
The AMP-8040 can be mounted in a 2U rack style enclosure. The AMP-8040 is compatible with all standard 19-inch
National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) rack-mounts.
Ventilation
The AMP-8040 must be provided with adequate ventilation for proper cooling.
• When installing the AMP-8040 in a cabinet:
• Be sure that the rear of the cabinet provides adequate air flow for proper cooling.
• Be sure to leave a minimum of 3 inches clearance above and behind the amplifier and at least 2 inches on each
side.
If
installed
in a rack, active thermal management (such as rack fans) is recommended.
•
CAUTION! Do not block the ventilation holes on the sides and bottom of the AMP-8040.
