They met His Royal Highness the Duke of Cambridge during his official visit to the show on Friday, 18 April. The Royals walked directly past our award-winning exhibit as part of their show tour and the Duke spoke with our students, Emma Longworth, Carly Vanden Dool, Cynthia Tran and Dean Van Wyk. As Emma explained some of the agricultural details to the Duke of Cambridge, she commented, “As you would know from your studies of Agriculture,” impressing the Duke with her knowledge of his area of study. Emma, Carly and Georgia Butler were also interviewed for the local Hills radio station, 90.5, by ex-student Jake Nelson. Our ingenious display was put together, as in past years, by our enthusiastic Muirfield High team, led by Ms Heap and Mrs Ashurst and supported by parents, ex-students and community members. The core team consisted of 20 students from Years 7 to 12 who are passionate about agriculture. Page 2 Muirfield Matters I am always amazed at how Ms Heap devises a new and ingenious concept each year. The circus-themed presentation was entitled “Agriculture – The greatest show on earth”. Ms Heap said that it was a real team effort with the more senior students keen to show leadership by involving juniors in the task. Muirfield has enjoyed considerable success in this competition. It is our third first place in the five years that we have participated in this show. Ms Heap already has next year’s design in her head. New Staff Ms Catherine Coates joins our staff as the Head Teacher Special Education, replacing Mr Newcomb who was successful in gaining a merit based position at another secondary school on the last day of last year. Ms Coates heads the Barclay Learning Centre (our special unit). She also has responsibility for the Learning and Support Team which supports students in the mainstream who need additional support in the classroom. Issue 4 2014 Page 3 Lesley Walker As you know, Mrs Lesley Walker, our Head Teacher Creative and Performing Arts, had a brain haemorrhage before school on Monday 24 March. She was rushed to hospital where she had surgery but did not recover and passed away on 29 March. The chapel was filled to overflowing; testament to the respect and love felt for Lesley from students and colleagues, past and present. It has been a sad time for many of our staff and students, and indeed for me. I felt privileged to be asked by Lesley’s family to speak at her funeral. It was a tough task. As I said at her funeral, it is a common regret that we don’t let people know how much they mean to us and how much we appreciate them when they are alive. Lesley will be missed, more than she would realise. A number of families have contacted the school requesting information regarding a memorial for Lesley Walker. We will be holding a small memorial gathering and laying a plaque in our rose garden. Details of the memorial will come later. What we need when we grieve Families in our community, as all families will at some time, have dealt with death and grief. Our school community has experienced grief in the last four years with the passing of a current student, an ex-student whose cohort were still at school, as well as mothers, fathers and extended family members of staff and students. We all deal with grief in different ways. The death of someone can still bring up feelings of loss as we remember the passing of a loved one. Our school counsellors are available for students, if they wish to talk about their grief. If necessary school counsellors may refer a student to outside counsellors or a family’s GP. When we grieve we need rest, time, compassion and physical and social activities. Above all we need hope for our own future happiness. If you are concerned about your child please contact the school or speak with your GP. Recognition Assembly - Respect, Participate, Learn Well done to all our recipients of awards in Term 1. Every term we acknowledge students for their efforts and achievements both within and beyond the classroom. We expect our students to demonstrate respect and to be active in their own learning. We also encourage students to participate in the many extra-curricular activities in the school so they really benefit from the broad range of experiences we offer. Thank you to those parents and family members who are able to attend the assemblies. It is wonderful to be part of a community that appreciates our young people and values education. Closure of the Computer Market At the April meeting, the P&C voted to close the Computer Markets. This decision came after much discussion over many P&C meetings. As I have previously written, the Computer Market has not been as profitable as it once was as the Page 4 Muirfield Matters customer base has decreased. Last year it ran at a $1,000 loss. In addition the Computer Market Sub-committee, which runs as a sub-committee of the P&C, has been without a full contingent of office bearers. The last day of trading for the Markets was Sunday 4 May. I thank all those who have been involved in the Computer Markets; and there have been many parents, past and present, who have helped out. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ray Hayes who has given much of his time to support the Computer Markets. I know the P&C have been active for the past couple of years in seeking alternative sources of income to support improvements in the school. You may have a contribution to make. Please join your fellow parents and carers at the P&C meetings held on the second Wednesday of every month during term. Is Your Child Feeling Cold at School? It is important that students wear correct uniform to school. Hoodies; track suit pants; different coloured jumpers and jackets; and tights worn as pants are the main breaches of school uniform during winter. We ask that parents assist us in ensuring their children have the correct uniform. As the first line of defence against the cold, all students in Years 7 to 11 should be wearing the correct green jumper or the track suit jacket. Year 12 students will shortly receive their jerseys. Girls have the option of the black skirt with tights or tailored black pants. Should the school shirt and jumper or jacket not be enough, students can wear long-sleeved T-shirts under their shirt and school jumper or jacket. But, please, no hoodies! For those that really feel the cold, the Uniform Shop has heavy, lined, black fleece jackets. Students who have taken up the school jackets tell me they are very toasty and they have nice pockets to keep hands warm. With the three layers – shirt, jumper and jacket – students will be set to face the cold. used the memory and mnemonics guide to study more productively? Learn - Have you developed new writing skills to improve your communication? Achieve - What were your best and worst results from Term 1? Progress - Have you attempted to correct some of the mistakes you made in Term 1? Yearly Exams – Week 8 and 9, Term 2. Year 12 Trial Examinations commence in Week 8 of this term. With a busy assessment period ahead a significant amount of groundwork has been laid to support our students. During our weekly assembly we have encouraged students to start their study notes and revise over their completed coursework. At the end of Term One, Elevate Education presented a two hour workshop for our Year 12 students on memory, mnemonics and exam preparation. Students should have been implementing these strategies over the course of the last month. Students should be starting to test themselves, using past HSC exam papers. They can be located at this website: http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/hsc_exams/ The library has a number of past exam papers, including sample Band 6 answers, in the HSC resource section of the library. The more familiar you are with the examination documents, the better prepared you will be for the exams. Assessment Tasks With half of student course work completed, but nearly two-thirds of the assessment tasks still due, students have a busy few months ahead. Remember to: Start assessment tasks when received. Underline the key glossary term to answer the question accurately. Break the task into ‘chunks’ and create deadlines for each. Allow the time to edit and review work. Use the assessment schedule to avoid completing multiple tasks at the same time. It is also worth mentioning some of your rights as a student: to be informed of the assessment policies of the school and Board of Studies. to receive clear guidelines relating to the requirements of each assessment task. to be told in advance of the due date for each assessment task. to receive feedback that assists in the review of work. to query the mark for an individual task at the time if is returned. to request a review of the calculation of the final assessment mark if believe the final assessment rank is incorrect. Issue 4 2014 Page 19 The Higher School Certificate examination – maintaining integrity. Students often wonder about the procedures followed by the Board of Studies to prevent plagiarism and malpractice in an exam. The following table, provided by the Board of Studies, highlights some case studies from across the state in 2013. Breach of examination rules and malpractice Non-certification of project Non-serious attempt Description Description Students submitting a major project are required to have the project certified by their teacher, that all work has been undertaken by the student, or that necessary outsourcing has been attributed. Principals advise the Board of Studies if a project cannot be certified. Statements from the student and the supervisor of marking are also considered. Description The HSC Rules and Procedures require students to attempt a range of questions throughout the examination paper. Attempting multiple-choice questions is not sufficient. Supervisors of marking report students who submit frivolous or objectionable material. Case studies A student completed much of their project at home and did not provide for regular monitoring by the class teacher. A student purchased and modified a commercial product and submitted it as their own project. Case studies A student attempted multiple-choice questions only and did not engage with other question types across the examination. A student submitted an obscene response which was considered to be highly objectionable. Penalty range Minor breaches are dealt with during marking or by a warning. Cases of potential malpractice are referred to the Examination Rules Committee (ERC), a subcommittee of the Board of Studies. Penalties include a reduction in examination marks, zero marks for the examination or cancellation of the course. Penalty range Where it cannot be established that the project represents the student’s own work, penalties include a reduced mark or zero marks for the project. In some cases the project is accepted as the entire work of the student and the mark stands. Penalty range Students engaging in a non-serious attempt generally receive no result in that course. This in turn may jeopardise the award of the Higher School Certificate. Number of ERC cases Number of cases Number of cases A breach of examination rules occurs when a student introduces unauthorised notes or equipment in an examination, or is otherwise disrespectful of the examination conditions. A breach of examination rules is deemed to be malpractice when the student uses the notes or equipment to gain an unfair advantage in the examination. Case studies A student brought unauthorised notes into the examination where they were found on the desk. A student included sharp glass in a submitted project. A student copied information from an electronic device. The student’s alternative explanation of ‘rote learning’ was not accepted. 2013: 19 2013: 102 2013: 463 2012: 15 2012: 118 2012: 236 2011: 10 2011: 155 2011: 207 2010: 9 2010: 184 2010: 187 Page 20 Muirfield Matters “The relatively small number of cases noted below should be considered in the context of over 70,000 students attempting over 500,000 examination papers”. http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/exam-rule-breaches/maintaining-hsc-exam-integrity.html If you are looking for any HSC support, be sure to make an appointment with Mr Finley, Head Teacher Senior Studies. Mathew.finley@det.nsw.edu.au Turner Cup The game was played at Muirfield High School Soccer Oval on Friday 7th of March 2014. We played against Kellyville High School and unfortunately lost the game 3-2 in the second half with a golden goal with only 8 players left on the park from each team. We conceded the first goal of the match in the 20th minute with a fine strike from just outside the 6 yard box. We then managed to pull a goal back with a penalty being awarded to us from a handball deep into the second half, which our Captain Karl Bowry took with great confidence. The keeper managed to get a hand on it but the ball very fortunately managed to spin into the back of the net. However, the joy didn't last too long as Kellyville were also awarded a handball penalty 3 minutes later, which they capitalised on through their goalkeeper of all people. 2-1 down at halftime! The halftime break provided a much welcomed rest for the boys as they were concerned with the formation in the backline. After some intense discussion, the boys agreed that we move back to a 4,4,2 formation in order to shore up our defense and instil a bit more confidence back into the team. The change of formation worked a treat along with a couple of player changes in in the forward line. Josh Bednar and Ben Stollery combined beautifully down the left hand side to score a wonderful goal to level it back up 2-2. The remainder of the game provided Muirfield with a host of opportunities that we unfortunately couldn't convert, especially in extra time. Five minutes before the game went to penalties, one of Kellyville’s talented youngsters scored an absolutely cracking goal that unfortunately sunk the hearts of all our players. The game was played in great spirit by both teams and was a fantastic spectacle to watch. The TAS Textiles Department would just like to showcase some of the young upcoming talent of our young Textiles students - creative, inspiring, motivated and having fun. The students below, all YEAR 7, have only been in Technology -Textiles for 10 weeks with classes twice a week. Many have not used a sewing machine before the start of the year. These are one of several projects they have completed this term, after learning about safety, parts of the machine, the design process and then experimenting with each machine . WOW! Issue 4 2014 Page 25 Inside Story Headline ANZAC Commemoration Thomas Brown of year 9 has been involved with the Australian Army Cadets for the last 18 months which he enjoys greatly. Through Cadets, Tom has performed wide and varied community services: from helping the Relay for Life organisers, a relay to raise funds for cancer research to assisting with the Blacktown March Anniversary. The photo below was taken at a dawn service for Anzac Day at Lidcombe and appeared on the front page of the a local Auburn newspaper. Tom was an integral part of the dawn service at Lidcombe. He was part of a noted Catafalque Party (a guard of four sentries) that stood watch over the fallen soldiers memorial at Lidcombe. Tom also marched in the parade in town bearing flags for the fallen, marching behind the 2 lone rider-less horses, with a pair of boots set backwards in the stirrups, a sign that a warrior has fallen in a battle. Recognition for Our Recognition Assembly Hi, this is just a quick note to thank all the organisers of the lovely assembly and morning tea today. The Year 12 Chairpersons were beautifully spoken and very inspiring as was the opening address, the band played impressively and it was lovely to have some time to spend with my daughter Tara after the assembly. Every interaction we have had with Muirfield has been excellent and reinforces the fact that we made the right choice of school for our daughter. Thanks again - Anu Suttie. Page 26 Muirfield Matters Discover Engineering Day by David Nelson & Jake Mountford On Tuesday 25th March we participated in Discover Engineering Day at William Clarke College. This day was organised to help students in Years 10 -12 who are interested in engineering as a career choices the opportunity to find out: What engineers do Why you would want to become and engineer How you become an engineer There were a lot of guest speakers from engineering firms and universities. They told us about all the different types of engineering and had some interesting presentations on what is involved in working in the areas of engineering. During the day there were many activities in which to become involved. Activities included cooking with dry ice, working out a way to support an object on water, and making a structure out of paper to support heavy weights. The most successful one supported more than 4 kilograms! All the activities related to different aspects of engineering like chemical and civil engineering. The most informative section was when the different universities offered information on the range of courses available. We had a great time and are better prepared than ever for the years ahead. David Nelson and Jake Mountford Year 10 Please do not drop your children off in the school car parks. There are deliveries and staff accessing the car park at different times during the day and the access is very narrow. For the safety of the children do not use the car park as a drop off or pick up point unless called to collect a sick or injured child. It was great to get everyone’s input on the upcoming BYOD program. I’m sure that Mr Carpenter appreciated your comments as you appreciated hearing about the proposal. It was also good to have an instructive discussion about the future of the Computer Market and to make some tough decisions. Again your suggestions and support were valued. Next Meeting—Wednesday 14 May 7.30pm Muirfield High School Staff Common Room Computer Market Closure As you are no doubt aware, the Computer Market ceased operation on Sunday 4 May after approximately 20 years. The decline in revenue and the changing market has been discussed numerous times at P&C meetings and when the school was forced to forgo a potential long-term booking worth $26,000 per year the tough decision was made. Unfortunately the Computer Market reported a loss of $1,000 in 2013 with no funding being contributed to the P&C. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Computer Market Subcommittee for their commitment, particularly over the last few years. There is a huge amount of work involved in organising and managing a weekly market and unfortunately we have not had a full Subcommittee for a number of years. In particular, I would like to thank Ray Hayes who has volunteered on the Computer Market committee for approximately 12 years. In the last few years Ray has been present at the markets almost every weekend, filling in for the managers whenever they were unavailable and ensuring that everything ran smoothly. I would also like to thank Chris Fitzgerald who is no longer a parent of Muirfield, but who willingly continued to support the Computer Market Subcommittee long after his children left the school. His dedication and commitment to Muirfield are appreciated enormously. Working Bee A working bee has been scheduled to spread the large piles of mulch that have been left in the school grounds. If you have a wheelbarrow and a bit of spare time, please head on down and lend a hand. If time permits, weeding and other general tidying up around the school will also be undertaken. Feel free to bring children who would like to help maintain the beautiful bush land feel of Muirfield. Saturday 14 June 10 am until 2 pm. Page 32 Muirfield Matters Fundraising BBQ A BBQ and cake stall to raise much needed funds for Muirfield has been booked.
