Letter from the Chairmen
(Charles R. Warne, left,
and Robert A. Wilson,
M.D., right)
This year, Greenville Tech celebrates 45 years of innovation. It was 1962 when the
college opened its doors on the site of a former garbage dump, finding new use for land many
would have overlooked.
Finding new ways of doing things has been the overriding theme of the years since.
Without that philosophy, we wouldn’t have turned McAlister Square, a retail mall that had
fallen on hard times, into a thriving center where students can enroll at Greenville Tech
on one end, and go from Greenville Tech to the four-year and graduate programs available
through the University Center at the other end. Without innovation, we couldn’t have built
student apartments on our Barton Campus. And without innovation, we wouldn’t be the
first two-year college in the state to form a bridge program with the University of South
Carolina.
Your generous financial support to the Greenville Tech Foundation, Inc. helped make
many of these innovative projects possible. Donors contributed a total of $2,350,780 in cash,
pledges receivables, gifts-in-kind, and planned gifts in the 12 months ending June 30, 2007.
Major gifts from John I. Smith Charities, Inc., Nissan North America, Inc., The Sargent
Foundation, and United Way of Greenville County substantially impacted the fundraising
goal. These gifts and many others allowed the Foundation to provide $1,399,977 to the
college for equipment and supplies, faculty/staff development, property, and student and
departmental activities.
Now, with the retirement of our first and only president, we must replace someone nearly
irreplaceable, so it again is time for us to find new ways of doing things. We look forward
to the efforts of a second leader and hope that our new president will be as visionary and
forward thinking as the man who has built Greenville Tech into a national model for twoyear colleges.
Without your interest and involvement and so many people like you, we couldn’t have
accomplished all that we have in 45 years. As we celebrate this significant milestone, we look
forward to the years ahead, a time of unmatched opportunity.
Sincerely,
Robert A. Wilson, M.D.

Institution Profile
Established in 1962, Greenville
Tech has grown from a small
institution to a thriving four-campus
system where nearly 15,000 students
prepare for today’s and tomorrow’s
career opportunities. Greenville Tech
owes much of its growth to innovation
with priorities such as flexible
scheduling choices and convenient
locations that make the college
accessible to anyone interested in
pursuing a college education.
There are over 160 programs in
colleges of arts and sciences, business
and public service, health sciences and
nursing, and technologies. Program
advisory boards ensure that what we’re
teaching and the tools we use to teach
allow our students to enter industry
well prepared or transfer to a four-year
college ready for further success.
Greenville Tech’s four campuses
are situated across Greenville County,
allowing anyone in our service area to
get to class in minutes. Convenience
has been a priority of ours since day
one, and we’ve been ahead of the pack
with options including mini-mesters
during the summer and over the
holidays, weekend schedules, and an
extensive array of online offerings.
Whether the goal is to start work
on a bachelor’s degree or learn job skills
in two years or less, Greenville Tech’s
programs, schedules, and reasonable
tuition make us college that works.
The college enjoys an excellent
relationship with its community, and
Greenville Tech is one of the reasons for
the area’s strong and sustained growth.
A strong alumni base exists in the
Upstate, and many of these graduates
serve in a hiring capacity, providing
valuable networking opportunities for
students.
The community has been generous,
allowing the college, through its
foundation, to provide equipment,
scholarships, and other resources that
wouldn’t be available otherwise.

The Year in Review
in
12
45 years of innovation
Innovation has been critical
in helping Greenville Tech build
a college that works better than
ever this year. The new Northwest
Campus is a fitting way to celebrate
45 years of progress, providing a
new home for the popular Culinary
Arts program along with Nursing,
Med Lab Technician, Small Animal
Care, Veterinary Assistant, Massage
Therapy, and Patient Care Technician.
With the latest tools for teaching and
learning, each classroom at Northwest
will feature Smart technology and
wireless connectivity.
Study abroad
trips, including a venture to India
this year, have increased learning
opportunities for students and
members of the community. The
learning experience has also been
enriched by visitors including
a Fulbright Foreign Language
Teaching Assistant from Turkey.
While 45 years is a significant
milestone, another important
anniversary was celebrated this
year as the Quick Jobs with a
Future program, which delivers
relevant job skills in 90 days or less,
celebrated its fifth anniversary with
10,266 registrations.
Renovation work has made
way for a partnership important to
the college’s and the community’s
future. The Greenville County
DNA lab has moved onto the Barton
Campus, joining the county’s forensic
automobile processing facility.
Students can now work alongside
professionals as they prepare for
careers in forensics and criminal
justice.
McCall Hospice House of
Greenville opened on the Brashier
Campus, a facility where patients
in the final stages of life can receive
loving care and health care students
can gain clinical experience. Health
care students are also benefiting from
the college’s involvement with Health
Sciences S.C., the state’s first patient
simulation training center.
The McKinney Regional
Automotive Center has been a huge
draw for students who want to leave
lectures behind and get their hands
on what they’re learning. This year,
a second building opened, providing
room to grow for the Auto Body,
Automotive, Diesel, and MotorSports
programs along with educational
partnerships with General Motors and
Nissan/Infiniti.
Those partnerships were
strengthened this year thanks to the
continued involvement and generosity
of Nissan North America. The
company contributed $100,000 to the
Nissan/Infiniti Technician Training
Program, ensuring that training
meets the high standards required by
dealers.
2007, provided free dental care for
low-income children in the Upstate,
serving 934 children and providing
$227,196 worth of dental treatment.
The college’s new cosmetology
program opened in a 13,000-squarefoot-space with the atmosphere and
appearance of an upscale day spa.
Here students can learn to deliver
services clients pay a premium for with
the Cosmetology, Esthetics, and
Nail Technology programs taught by
professionals who’ve been where they
hope to go.
In 2007, an innovative partnership
between Greenville Tech and the
University of South Carolina brought
new opportunities to students. The
Bridge program means students who
begin a bachelor’s degree at Greenville
Tech can finish that program at USC,
moving from one step to the next
seamlessly.
Another four-year partnership
with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical
University allows Greenville Tech
aircraft maintenance technology
graduates to move on to greater
marketability and opportunities in
a four-year aviation or aerospace
program.
The academic year closed
with the graduation of 2,459
students on May 8.
Looking back, 2006-2007
has been a time of building
innovative partnerships.
Looking forward, these
partnerships can only increase
opportunities for students.
Garden-style apartments on the
Barton Campus mean class is only
a walk away as, for the first time,
Greenville Tech students can live
where they learn. These students and
their families can feel safe knowing
that the college has converted from a
security office to a police force and has
taken major steps in crisis readiness.
Dental students learned as they
helped the college give back to the
community. Give Kids a Smile,

“I would like to send a heartfelt thank you for making this scholarship
money available for someone like me to receive. What I mean by someone
like me is that I am a non-traditional student, mother of three, I have been
out of the Army for 10 years, and I have been out of work for the past three
years.” Corinthia G. Hewins

Awards
2007 BENEFACTOR
AWARD
The State Board for Technical and
Comprehensive Education recognized an outstanding
benefactor from each of the 16 technical colleges in
South Carolina on November 8, 2007, at the Marriott
in Columbia, S.C. Mr. Ralph Hendricks and the
Ralph and Virginia Hendricks Foundation were
recognized as the outstanding “Benefactor Making a
Difference” at Greenville Technical College.
Mr. Hendricks is a former member of the
Greenville Tech Foundation board of directors
and trustee of the Ralph & Virginia Hendricks
Foundation, which has given over $360,000 to be
used for scholarship assistance. These gifts in the past six
years have resulted in scholarship assistance for 186 students pursuing a
broad range of educational interests. Many of those students credit the support coming
from the Ralph & Virginia Hendricks Foundation as the source that enabled them to change their lives.

In closing...
If you’re like most people in this area, Greenville Tech has touched your life
or the life of someone close to you. Perhaps it was a family member who came to
acquire skills that would build a career. Or maybe it was a neighbor or employee
who returned to college for retraining. It could have been someone who attended
a seminar, got the basis for a four-year degree, or earned graduate credit at the
University Center.
Greenville Tech has been a part of the fabric of this community since 1962.
Together the college and the Greenville community have grown and diversified,
welcoming new businesses and industries, and supporting existing operations with
educational programs that promote success. This partnership has been a catalyst for
the tremendous economic development in our area.
With your support, we can continue to help individuals realize their educational
dreams, meet the training needs of area companies, and help to attract new industry
by supporting training requirements. Our future growth and the community’s

Mission
Greenville Technical College drives personal and
economic growth through learning.
Role and Scope
Greenville Technical College is the largest public twoyear college in South Carolina, serving a fall headcount
of more than 14,000 curriculum students. The college
provides exceptional learning opportunities primarily to
the residents of Greenville County.
Curricular offerings include (1) technical courses,
certificates, diplomas and associate degrees in business,
computer technology, health sciences, engineering
technologies, industrial technologies, and public service;
and (2) university transfer courses and associate degrees.
The college also provides an extensive offering of
continuing education courses for occupational
advancement and personal interest, as well as economic
development services that encourage business and
industrial growth in a diverse economic community.
In addition, developmental courses serve under-prepared
students seeking to enter a program of study. Upon
completion of their educational goals, the majority of
graduates either are employed in fields related to their
programs of study or transfer to four-year colleges and
universities.
Since the college is an open admission institution,
students come from diverse socioeconomic and
educational backgrounds. Affordable education is
provided at times and locations convenient to students.
Faculty and staff are student-centered, flexible, and
recognized in their fields. Various educational support
services are provided to facilitate the teaching/learning
process and to enhance the academic and personal
development of the student, including an emphasis on
articulation with local high schools and other colleges
and universities.

Greenville Technical College achieves its mission by
implementing the following strategic initiatives:
Focus on student learning and experience by providing
