Introduction
It is a pleasure to present the 2013 Vidant Medical Center Research Report. This
publication highlights some of the many research accomplishments of Vidant
Medical Center employees over the past year. There are additional research and
clinical trial studies conducted by ECU and others at Vidant Medical Center that are
not included in this report.
Research is a systematic search for new facts and the generation of new knowledge.
This contributes to our mission to enhance the quality of life for the people and
communities in which we serve, touch and support every day. As we continue to
promote a professional practice environment, Vidant Medical Center employees are
encouraged to participate and engage in research activities. In addition,
Evidence-Based Practice Series of articles can be found on the Center for Learning
and Performance website. Research Tools to guide the research process can be
found on the Research Intranet page.
I look forward to sharing these accomplishments annually and offer my

Research
Vidant Medical Center supports and encourages employees,
physicians, faculty and students to participate and engage in
research and evidence-based practice activities. The Research
Department provides support, guidance and consultation to
individuals with a research interest. Vidant Medical Center Research
Department is located in the Nursing Administration suite on the
West Tower Hallway. If you have a question related to research at
Vidant Medical Center, call 252-847-4817.
It is the policy of Vidant Medical Center that all activities involving
human subject research at/or sponsored by the hospital and its
components shall be submitted, reviewed and approved by the
UMCIRB. As part of the UMCIRB approval process, an Institutional
Approval Form (http: ecu.edu/irb) via EPIRATE must be completed
