The Prime Minister of Pakistan
Briefed About COMSATS Activities
On 23rd Feb., 2009, The Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Mr. Syed
Yousaf Raza Gilani, in his capacity as the Chairperson of COMSATS, received a briefing
in the P.M. House on the programmes of this organization in Pakistan and abroad. The
Executive Director COMSATS, Dr. Imtinan Elahi Qureshi, highlighted the contributions
of COMSATS as a think-tank addressing the role of S&T in national and regional
development plans; as an advocacy forum for strengthening R&D institutions in the
developing countries and making them responsive to national needs; and as a
facilitator of South-South cooperation in S&T through exchange visits and training
programmes.
The organization has an impressive record of institution-building, since two of its
flagship projects, the COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) and
COMSATS Internet Services (CIS) are well-known all over Pakistan. The Rector CIIT, Dr.
S.M. Junaid Zaidi apprised the P.M. about the phenomenal growth of this Institution
from one campus with 300 students in 2000 to 6 campuses with 14000 students at
present, while maintaining high standards of education.
The Prime Minister appreciated that the organization has the capacity to build international scientific collaborations
among developing countries. He pledged the support of his Government to enhance the role and effectiveness of this
important platform. The P.M. directed the relevant departments and ministries of Pakistan to extend help to COMSATS in
fulfilling its international obligations and implementing national initiatives.
The meeting was attended by: Mr. Muhammad Azam Khan Swati, Minister for Science and Technology; Begum Shahnaz
Wazir Ali, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Social Sector; Dr. Samar Mubarakmand, Member (Science &
Technology), Planning Commission; and other high officials of the Ministries of Science & Technology, Foreign Affairs, and
Finance.

Report on MatLab Workshop:
The Workshop on MatLab, arranged by the Department of Mathematics, was held on 26th
– 30th January 2009 at COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) – Lahore. The
workshop was opened for CIIT faculty members. Nineteen registered faculty members
including professors, lecturers and lab engineers have been attended. Its purpose was
to introduce technical computing and enhance programming skills.
The resource
person was Mr. Muhammad Rafiullah who is an Assistant Professor in the Department of
Mathematics.
In the opening remarks, the campus director, Dr Shaukat Ali Hayat said that “the
workshop is an opportunity to learn and understand the technical computing. There is a
lot of use of computing software in research, especially in engineering”. While emphasizing the importance of Mathematics, he
said “Mathematics is a great tool to explore new ways. Without it, it is difficult to understand natural phenomena”. He hoped that
“after completion of this workshop all participants should try to work on some projects and apply this learning in their teaching”.
The following topics were successfully covered with real life examples in five days: Introduction to MatLab, matrices and arrays,
plotting (graphics) 2D & 3D, linear algebra, polynomials, differential equations, data analysis, fundamentals of programming, script
writing and writing the user defined functions.
On the last day, the invited guests were Dr. Ghulam Qanber Abbasi, Dr. Malik Muhammad Arif Rafiq, Dr Shahadat Ali Taj, and Dr.
Saman Shahbaz.
In feedback the participants appreciated the resource person for his efforts and
dedication to the workshop.
They have demanded more training and lecture
programs on MatLab Tool Boxes, Simulink, Mathematica and Maple.
In closing remarks the chairman, Dr. Ghulam Qanber Abbasi congratulated all the
participants on their successful completion of this training program. He also thanked
the Director, Dr Shaukat Ali Hayat for his permission to organize workshop on MatLab.
He appreciated the sincere effort of the resource person and organizer Mr. Muhammad
Rafiullah for putting together such a splendid program.

The connection between 23 April and
books was first made in 1923 by
booksellers in Catalonia, Spain as a way
to honour the author Miguel de
Cervantes who died on that day. In 1995,
UNESCO decided that the World Book
and Copyright Day would be celebrated
on this date because of the Catalonian
festival and because the date is also the
anniversary of the birth and death of
William Shakespeare, the death of Inca
Garcilaso de la Vega and Josep Pla, the
birth of Maurice Druon, Vladimir
Nabokov, Manuel Mejía Vallejo and
Halldór Laxness.
Three activities were held on the
occasion:
• Walk
• Poster Competition
• Book Stalls of every department
The book day was started by the Walk
from the mosque to the library. Dr Tallat
Afza started the walk by cutting the
Ribbon along with Respected HOD’s of
all the departments, faculty members,
staff members and students. Then the
participants visited the book installs in
the library. Library and every
department had its book stall there.
These installs include the books,
projects and publications of different
faculty members.
The start of 2009 saw the launch of the
first ‘World Book Day’ in Comsats. The
main aim of World Book Day (WBD) is to
encourage people to explore the
pleasures of books and reading by
providing them with the opportunity to
have a book of their own. Resultantly,
COMSATS believes that it is a great idea
supporting and celebrating WBD by
encouraging students to read and
promoting reading-related activities.
Comsats focuses not only on improving
students reading ability but also on
developing a love of reading.
COMSATS Institute of Information and
Technology celebrated ‘World Book Day’
on 29th of April, Thursday at 10 pm . WBD
was organized by the Library
Information Services, with the
supervision of worthy Director Dr
Shaukat Ali Hayat and convener library
affairs Dr Talat Afza and incharge library
Poster competition was one of the most
exciting parts of this occasion. Sadaf
Ehsan coordinated of this competition.
All the students participated with their
full excitement and interest. Miss Sadia
Farooq from the Architecture
department selected the posters
for first, second and third position.
Speaking as chief guest at the occasion,
Dean of management sciences Madam
Tallat Afza acknowledged that she had
achieved her status and responsible
position because of books. “Books
paved the way for my ascent to
success,” she admitted. She also
expressed the opinion that books are
not only a source of information, but
also provide an inalienable sense of joy
and companionship.
The book day was
started by a walk
from the mosque to
the library. Dr Tallat
Afza started the walk
by cutting the ribbon
along with respected
HOD’s of all the
departments, faculty
members, staff
members and
