Dear Readers/Advertisers,
With the festive season just around the corner and 2012 not far behind, I’ve been reflecting on what a year it’s been for the Power Transmission Review team.
Not only have we successfully launched our new, comprehensive and fully interactive website but we’ve received incredible feedback on it from the industry, too. So if you haven’t visited yet, please do take a look at www.ptreview.co.uk.
You’ll see our website gives you all the industry latest, from features, profiles and products to events and recruitment. Plus you can sign up for our FREE newsletter and have it delivered directly to your inbox.
Incredibly, PTR has been going from strength to strength for over seven years. Since our launch in early 2004 we’ve become the leading publication in the UK power transmission distributor industry.
But 2012 promises to be our most exciting year since 2004. Why? Because we’re planning to amalgamate PTR with its popular sister publication dedicated to the fluid and hydraulic power industry, FPR.
We believe our new ‘integrated’ magazine will be ‘The ONE leading voice for the Fluid,
Power & Transmission Industry.’ And we hope upon reading it you will think so as well.
Together, our new website and our new magazine offer you unbeatable news, information and, of course, opportunities to promote a business, its products and services - whether you’re an advertiser, advertising agency or PR consultancy.
On that positive note, we do welcome your feedback, comments, views and news so please feel free to e-mail me, The Editor - tony@internalaffairs.co.uk

Environmentally-friendly drive belts and air actuators that are resistant to harsh environmental conditions are the highlights presented by ContiTech (hall 1 DL, booth
422) at MDA India in Banga-lore.
From December 6 to 9, 2011, the technology company from
Hanover, Germany, displayed its rubber and plastic products at the leading trade fair in India for drive technology and automation. India is one of ContiTech’s most important markets, and is also equally interesting as a production location and sales market. The company has increased its commitment in the market over the past several years and will continue to expand its presence there significantly.
Drive belts for environmental protection
With the BlueConcept family of drive belts, ContiTech has taken on a trail-blazing role in environ-mentallyfriendly and health-friendly industrial applications. At MDA India, the company is showing the CONTI-V®
PIONEER wrapped V-belt, which is composed mainly of renewable raw materials, and, although it is made without carbon black, it is electrically conductive. In addition, the carbon black and allergen-free timing belt,
CONTI® SYNCHROBELT PIONEER, will be on display. It is the ideal solution for drive applications that people come into contact with.
From its complete range of drive belts for machine and plant engineering, ContiTech is also pre-senting its high-performance timing belts and flat belts made of polyurethane, rubber timing belts as well as wrapped V-belts and raw edge heavy-duty V-belts.
PIX hydraulic hose & end-fittings have been awarded the prestigious
DNV (Det Norske Veritas) MED
(Marine Equipment Directive) Type
Approval. This recognition is in addition to the DNV certification that was previously conferred upon the company in 2008.
The MED Type Approval is an unbiased third-party certification attesting to a product’s adherence to specific standards or specifications, and verification of an appropriate production quality system. This approval is strongly recommended for products used in high performance industries, in particular, marine, mining and offshore, endorsing their quality and safety.
Following receipt of the certification, Operations Director for UK based PIX Hydraulics,
Karan Sethi said: “In this day and age of ever increasing quality expectations from our customers, the DNV MED will serve as our competitive edge. As a company, we have made a conscious effort to be at the forefront of continuous improvement in our manufacturing standards, quality, and processes; and this approval confirms that we are heading in the right direction.
This is a fantastic feat and we are absolutely thrilled to join an elite league of DNV MED approved manufacturers.”

Air actuators with an impressively long-life design
Also on display are air actuators for pneumatic tasks in machine, apparatus and plant engineer-ing.
Air actuators are used in many industries when a lot of force has to be produced with pneumat-ics, but little space is left for installation and especially difficult environmental conditions are preva-lent.The long-life design of ContiTech air actuators is a convincing factor in applications involving heavy deposits and contamination – such as in the
With their long-life design, air actuators from ContiTech for pneumatic tasks in machine, apparatus and plant engineering are convincing products.
With the CONTI-V® PIONEER, ContiTech is presenting the world’s first eco-friendly wrapped V-belt. It is composed largely of renewable raw materials.

wood processing or textile machine industries, in offshore usage, saw mill machines or the food industry.
Since air actuators function without me-chanically operated parts like pistons, piston rods and friction seals, they are not subject to wear and require no maintenance.
This gives them an edge over conventional cylinders. They are also more environmentally-friendly as they do not require oil.
Involvement in India
ContiTech has had a presence in
India for many years, operating two production plants and em-ploying around 900 people there. At the New
Delhi location ContiTech produces high-quality drive belts, and it is from here that Indian customers get their supplies. Air spring systems are also manufactured in New Delhi for the Indian market, and especially for the state-run Indian Railways.
Near Kolkata, ContiTech produces conveyor belts for mining and other industrial uses. In addition,
ContiTech supplies the Indian subcontinent with hoses.

The Liverpool-based company
Dibro has one of the largest facilities in the UK for decorating glass bottles. It applies decorative painted finishes, acid-etched effects and lacquers to a variety of glass containers and has recently installed a new printing facility for the ceramic and precious metal printing of glass containers. The company is a specialist in its field but by its own admission no expert in linear motion. So when it came to automating a glass treatment process on the new plant to increase productivity it chose HepcoMotion® to recommend the most appropriate system for linear actuation.
The process Dibro was seeking to automate involves spraying the bottles with a slip coating after printing as they emerge on a conveyor from the firing lehr. This is a kiln with a temperature gradient from end to end for annealing glass, a method of slowly cooling the product to prevent thermal shock. The linear system was required to transport a spray nozzle mechanism across the full width of the conveyor, coating a line of bottles on each pass.
For this purpose HepcoMotion® suggested a complete system based on a hybrid version of its Profile
Driven Unit, the PDU2; a bespoke solution from its standard range of products. “We knew we needed a linear system that would provide consistent speed of the traverse unit to ensure an even spray coating and also the accurate positioning of the spray head so only the sides of the bottles are coated,” explained Tom
Dickinson, Managing Director and son of one of the Dickinson brothers that founded the company in 1933.
Many HepcoMotion® customers know precisely what they want to achieve through automation within a given budget but they do not have the linear motion expertise to specify the required system with confidence.
Tom Dickinson continued: “We were certainly attracted by the quality of the HepcoMotion® product but more importantly for us it was the technical understanding the company brought to the table.
HepcoMotion® just made it so easy for us.”
The PDU2 at the heart of the
Dibro system is a belt-driven linear actuator and ideal for this high performance application because it is compact and, thanks to its
Herculane® wheels, runs virtually friction-free on the inside of the profile. This provides extremely stable support for the carriage plate that carries the spray nozzle; felt wipers sweep away any debris in its path.
The overall system comprises a rigid but lightweight aluminium slotted profile into which fits the toothed belt drive and carriage, an arrangement that effectively encloses the unit and makes it ideal for operating in the damp conditions on the Dibro bottle production line. This quality is enhanced by stainless fixings, available as a standard choice within the
HepcoMotion® product programme.
HepcoMotion® specified and delivered the turnkey driven system complete with extra long beam to accord with the width of the lehr and AC motor to drive the PDU2.
“We also wanted to fit ancillary sensors for positioning and control of the drive unit to vary speed using an inverter,” Tom Dickinson explained. “And the HepcoMotion® system gave us the facility to do that easily.”
The system cycle is dictated by the belt speed of the lehr which in turn is dependent on the size of the bottles being printed.
Typically the traverse unit operates every minute, travelling at around
200mm/sec. The lehr is 2m wide so it typically takes the system 10 seconds to coat 15 one-litre spirit bottles or 50 perfume bottles.
The new printing facility is now up and running bringing new business to this family firm. Tom
Dickinson concludes: “Currently the lehr is operating 24 hours a day and I’m pleased to confirm the
HepcoMotion® system is working very well.”

New proposals by the Health
& Safety Executive (HSE) are likely, if they are implemented in their present form, to have serious financial implications for employers that are found to be in breach of health and safety laws, warns Paul Laidler, Managing
Director of Laidler Associates, a division of TÜV SÜD Product
Service.
In essence, the HSE is seeking to recover, from offending employers, the costs it incurs while investigating a material breach of health and safety law, and also any additional costs in providing support to the employer as an aid to ensuring that the situation is successfully remedied.
The arrangements have already been agreed in principle with the
Government, and the proposals were available for public consultation until 14th October.
If, as seems likely, the proposals are adopted, the new system of charging could start as soon as
April 2012, and it is estimated that the HSE will charge for its inspectors’ time at a rate of £133 per hour.
“The costs will certainly mount up very quickly,” said Paul
Laidler, “so it’s important that employers are fully aware of these new proposals. However, they should also bear in mind that the charges will only apply to companies that break health and safety laws, so those that are careful about meeting their responsibilities and staying within the law will not be affected in any way.”
The new proposals are, however, a wake-up call to businesses to review their health and safety practices and procedures to ensure that nothing has been overlooked. In particular, machinery users are advised to check that their PUWER assessments are up to date and comprehensive in their coverage.
Should these checks throw up any concerns, businesses are encouraged to seek expert advice of the type provided by Laidler
Associates rather than taking the risk that HSE inspectors may be the first to discover a problem.
“The cost of professional advice from a consultant with a proven track record is modest,” said Paul
Laidler, “and will certainly be less than the fines and the new HSE cost recovery charges that are likely to be imposed if health and safety laws have been broken, even inadvertently. Therefore where there is any doubt at all about health and safety compliance, professional advice is a very sound investment.”

The igus bearing was used after it was discovered that a phosphorbronze bearing used in the main arm, linking the body of the RDT with the towing vehicles, was prone to premature failure.
Key requirements for the trailer were that the bearing should combine high load bearing capacity with long life, small size and minimal maintenance requirements. It was decided that the iglidur sleeve bearing would

Donna Williams-Bevan. The pupils and teachers were then given a guided tour of the factory by
Schaeffler apprentices and toolroom staff. This gave pupils an opportunity to see what it would be like to work in a real manufacturing environment.
Pupils were then split into teams in order to compete in an Engineering
Challenge. Led by Schaeffler UK’s toolroom technician Gareth Gravell, this challenge involved pupils having to correctly read an engineering drawing before devising a suitable method for assembling an idler hub bearing. The winner was the team that correctly assembled their idler hub in the fastest time.
The Engineering Challenge was followed by a Schaeffler quiz, which tested the pupils’ ability to recall information provided in the Schaeffler presentations. Before departing the plant, lunch with senior managers and apprentices gave pupils the opportunity to ask any further questions in an open, informal environment.
Also in attendance on the day were Alex Robinson, Automotive
Components Section Manager at
The Society of Motor Manufacturers
& Traders (SMMT) and Paul Bullock,
Industry Liaison Manager at the
Welsh Automotive Forum.
As Alex Robinson commented:
“The SMMT, in accordance with the Automotive Council, has aimed to build on local activities already undertaken by individual companies to coordinate a nationwide See
Inside Manufacturing programme for young people considering their future career options. I believe Schaeffler’s event is a credit to the initiative and has undoubtedly left a positive impression on many of the school children who visited.”
“It is especially pleasing to see the automotive sector taking a lead on this activity in 2011, with government keen to extend the initiative across other manufacturing sectors in 2012. Schaeffler’s event will hopefully serve as a tool to spark off an interest amongst local school children in engineering and dispel the outdated attitudes towards a career in the profession.”
Paul Bullock of the Welsh Automotive
Forum agreed: “If the UK is to plug the current skills gap in UK manufacturing and engineering, it is critical that we attract more young people, both boys and girls, into a career in manufacturing. It was therefore particularly pleasing to see as many girls attending the Schaeffler open day as there were boys.
Interestingly, three of the four winning teams on the Engineering Challenges comprised all-girl members.”
Roger Evans MBE, Plant Director at Schaeffler UK commented: “The open day has been a tremendous success for everyone involved and we look forward to holding similar events in the future. Giving school children the opportunity to visit a real manufacturing plant, to ask questions of apprentices working there and to see what it’s really like working with the latest modern machinery in a dynamic, fast-moving manufacturing environment is essential if we are to attract more young people into a future career in this industry.”

In July 2011 bearing manufacturer
NKE Austria GmbH became a member of Frankfurt-based research association Forschungsvereinigung
Antriebstechnik e.V. (FVA).
In joining the network, which focuses on research all around power transmission, NKE aims to participate in the member organisations’ joint research activities and to gain additional research capacity for developing new products and technologies.
FVA – part of the German
Engineering Federation VDMA – is a network of mainly German research institutions and manufacturing companies. Its objective is joint research and training in the fields of electrical, mechanical and mechatronic drive engineering.
An important criterion for NKE’s admission to the network, for which it was audited by FVA, was the bearing manufacturer’s value creation in Austria. Supplementing its own research capabilities, FVA membership will allow NKE to participate in research ventures with leading research establishments and companies and to benefit from their outcomes. The research project aims, which are defined by working committees made up of FVA members, are to advance technical expertise and product quality and to cut production costs.
“All of our key customers and industry trend-setters are represented in FVA. This enables us to develop a good sense of direction for future product developments” , explains Gunnar

Collaboration between Italian engineering company Stema
Service Srl and Control Techniques Italy has resulted in a substantial contract with one of Italy’s leading tyre manufacturing groups.
The project, with Unidrive SP
AC drives used throughout, has produced energy savings, increased production and resulted in a reduction in maintenance costs.
Stema Service Srl is an engineering company providing automation and process control solutions for companies in the plastics, rubber, iron and steel, marine and galvanic water treatment sectors.
Stema Service routinely works with automation systems to improve production throughput, efficiency and reliability. Recently, with increased success in international markets, the company has standardised on suppliers in key areas, including PLC platforms and drives, with Control Techniques selected as its technological partner because of the technical excellence of its product and application experience and the worldwide support from the network of Drive and Applications Centres.
plus power modules – deliver greater flexibility for the architecture of the system, as well as minimising back-up spares. On the calendar line, where motor powers vary from just a few kilowatts up to
90kW, Unidrive SP drives are used throughout in open loop, closed loop and brushless servo configurations, depending on the motors employed.
All drives were fitted with Ethernet plug-in modules to give a single
Ethernet fieldbus.
Some drives feature SM-Applications modules, bringing a high level of motion control functionality down to the drive level, with the major benefits of less wiring, less chance of interference and enhanced process reliability and performance.
Control Techniques’ Unidrive
SP ‘solutions platform’ AC variable speed drive range spans
0.75kW right up to 1.9MW and is configurable into five operating modes – open and closed loop, vector, servo and regenerating mode. A wide range of plug-in option modules provide extra processing power and functionality including extra I/O and field bus connectivity to most industry standard networks and compatibility with most position feedback protocols.
At the tyre manufacturing company, a variety of applications, including rubber mixers and calendar lines, still used DC technologies and solutions. Following extensive study, it was determined that a switch to AC throughout could offer real benefits in terms of energy savings, reduced maintenance and downtime and better throughput and quality. With the maintenance needs of the DC motors eliminated, the company turned its attention to a review of the control system leading to a new approach utilising new PLCs and the introduction of a digital communication bus system based on ethernet.
The company has a mixture of induction and synchronous motors and has been able to standardise on Unidrive SP AC drives from
Control Techniques for all of these.
Mixers rated at up to 400kW utilise
Unidrive SPM modular drives, which, by virtue of their modular configuration – AC/DC modules,
The customer is delighted with the results of this extensive project, with the result that other commissions have followed and Stema Service has become the point of reference for other turnkey projects.

The new Garlock SGi Shaft
Grounding Bearing Isolator protects motor bearings from electrical damage as well as from lubricant loss and contamination.
Maintenance-free, the Garlock SGi bearing isolator combines the proven technologies of Garlock’s GUARDIAN non-sparking bronze labyrinth seal together with an AEGIS™ shaft grounding ring in a single unit.
It is ideally suited for motors controlled by variable frequency drives (VFDs) running pumps, fans, high-speed spindles, and other equipment in severe-duty applications such as mining and the processing of pulp/paper, food, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and water/wastewater.
The micro fibres themselves, proven in hundreds of thousands of installations to protect bearings from harmful currents, are engineered for flexibility to prevent breakage and ensure that the SGi will last for the service life of the motor.
Commonly used to save energy,
VFD’s induce motor-shaft currents that can damage bearings, completely wiping out any energy cost savings.
Standard bearing seals only keep out contamination and prevent leaks, but the Garlock SGi diverts harmful currents safely to ground, bypassing the bearings entirely and extending motor life. The patented
AEGIS FiberLock Channel built into the Garlock SGi permanently secures circumferential rows of conductive micro fibres, preventing their dislocation and the resulting accidental contamination of the bearing.
Designed for long-term total bearing protection, the SGi also provides an
IP56 non-contact isolation seal that withstands dust and powerful jetting liquids. It replaces contact lip seals and traditional bearing isolators commonly used in industrial applications and withstands operating temperatures from -30°C to 149°C (–22°F to 300°F). The unit is available for motor-shaft sizes ranging from 22.2mm to
152.4 (0.875 ins to 6 ins) in flanged, flangeless, and custom configurations.

Specialising in a niche market for UK manufacturers is not something new, but for Stockport based gear manufacturers,
Mini Gears, it has recently taken on a whole new meaning.
Mini Gears, probably best known for producing medium to high volume batches of commercial gears and racks, has recently diversified into totally different markets, including low volume and very high precision industries such as Autosport, specialist gears for classic cars, high end valves applications, rotor pumps and even as diverse as aircraft seating for first class business travellers.
Over the last 18 months the company has been very busy investing in areas such as gear grinding, gear shaving, low volume turning and milling on the newly acquired XYZ machines and this is to compliment the already existing very flexible machining cells that include 3 of the latest Mazak 5 axis CNC multitasking centres and CNC Gear Hobbing.
Although Mini Gears’ traditional markets are still holding up extremely well, the fact that so many high volume components have migrated abroad and, in a lot of cases the whole assembly of the product, this has meant that future expansion is very limited in these areas and some 2 years ago the company made the decision to diversify into markets nearer to home.
The Mini Gears team (in black) meeting with Oxford Brookes Racing (in white) profile on the gear tooth. Applications have included power take-off units, very accurate gears for pump rotor systems, Autosport applications for high performance gear boxes and drive trains and, quite ironically, we have used the machine to make reproduction gears for a British company at the very high end of the market who are reproducing a
1930s Roadster to original specifications but with all the latest updates to enable the engine to pass the latest emission controls. With this type of new technology the accuracy of the gears that can be achieved is now so accurate that it becomes necessary to invest in the latest up to date CNC gear checking machines and we have now ordered a brand new Gleason 350 GMS due for delivery in March 2012.
The positive side of this move has created many new jobs at Mini Gears’ UK factory, which employs 80 people and even during the recession the cut backs that we had to make were nowhere near as severe as against most companies in the manufacturing sector. We have also taken on 3 apprentices to train up for the skills gap which is very prevalent in engineering and the areas we are looking to cover are the highly skilled machining side together with the technical, design and commercial side of the business.
As well as the new lower volume business we have also seen during the last 6 months a very high number of new enquiries for parts that would normally be sourced overseas and, due to a large cost increases in these regions, we have won back a number of contracts for our
UK facility.
Also, at the other end of the spectrum is the ultra modern design of engines and gearboxes used in Formula 1 Racing, plus many other applications at club racing level, mainly used in saloon cars.
One of our most recent projects we have been involved in is to supply Oxford
Brookes who are one of the leading
Universities in engine and gearbox design with a number of gear components for their racing car which competed against 500 universities world-wide in a major racing series. Mini Gears’ parts were displayed at Silverstone’s
Formula Student which was attended by Ross Brawn OBE who is Patron of the organisation and who gave a very inspiring speech to all the students.
Since then two of the students we dealt with have just started at Renault F1 and
Toyota Racing in Germany.
The recent installation of new hi- tech equipment, particularly in gear grinding, has been a key factor into entering new markets. We invested in a Hoefler Helix
400K CNC Gear Grinding Machine, one of the most modern and up to date machines for grinding a special
Mini Gears also supplies many parts to the Autosport trade and, because we are not in competition with these companies, our parts are now running inside a large number of house-hold named products supplied by blue chip companies.
Mini Gears manufacture gears for cars such as the Triumph TR4 pictured above
One of the main areas of Mini Gears’ manufacture is the production of gear racks, mainly for the stairlift market, portable drills and electric generators.
These parts are normally made in very large volumes and are therefore very price sensitive. Now, going into niche markets, we have targeted much lower

We are also now supplying a number of customers with steering racks for cars and these range from the latest up to date racing series through to classic cars where the parts are no longer available.
On our gear products we have previously made gears up to 600mm diameter for a many diverse commercial industries.
However, recently we have supplied lower volume batches to the trade which caters for the after market parts for a wide range of cars produced from the 1930s up to the 1970s. For this we have had to invest in a specialist gear shaping machine which can cut helical shaped gears which is very unique to our industry.
We have literally spent tens of thousands of pounds on new tooling to enable us to produce the old design of gears using the latest technology. Quite literally out with the old and made with the new.
By looking at new ideas this has now turned into reality and we are extremely pleased with the company’s progress in these new niche areas.
Paul Darwent (Chairman) comments on the prospects ahead: “With the advent of escalating costs in low labour cost countries, the Directors at Mini Gears are a lot more confident for the next 5 to 10 years ahead for UK manufacture especially after what we have had to endure for the last 10 years with extremely low cost labour competition.
We are all looking forward as a team to the many challenges ahead.”
Mini Gears is soon to be featured in a programme called ‘Manufacturing
Solutions’ We have not been given the exact date yet so check the news page on our website www.minigears.co.uk where we will give the details as soon as we have them.

In modern internal combustion engines, the overrunning alternator pulley (OAP) is an important component that often gets unfairly overlooked, particularly when you consider the positive effects it has on improving the energy efficiency of an engine.
The OAP is the functional interior of the belt pulley mounted on the alternator. The function of the OAP is to decouple the alternator from the rotational irregularities of an internal combustion engine. The task the OAP performs is therefore a critical one, particularly as the rotational irregularities that occur in the latest internal combustion engines – including turbocharged versions – are significantly higher than those indicated to the vehicle’s driver by the tachometer needle.
In a vehicle’s accessory drive, the alternator is the component with the greatest mass moment of inertia and the highest speed.
This means that the acceleration and deceleration forces acting on the alternator resulting from the rotational irregularities have the greatest effect on the belt transferring these forces. The
OAP therefore ensures that, at many operating points, only the accelerating proportion of the crankshaft forces that are transferred to the belt drive are used to drive the alternator. The advantages of the OAP with a oneway clutch are clear. The reduction in the force level in the belt drive extends the life (typically by a factor of 10) of individual components, while ensuring an increase in the generator speed and a reduction in noise. In addition to smoother engine running, the OAP also contributes towards the reduction of fuel consumption and therefore
CO2 emissions.
For example, in Schaeffler’s
CO2ncept-10% concept vehicle, the OAP contributed a reduction of almost one per cent in fuel consumption. In urban traffic conditions – where a large proportion of time is spent idling and accelerating – the belt drive with the OAP is subjected to significantly lower loads than a belt drive without an overrunning pulley.
Use of the OAP also enables the more cost effective design of other components in the overall belt drive system.
Volker Ploetz, Senior Manager
Transmission Components at
Schaeffler Group Automotive comments: “The overrunning alternator pulley works in a similar way to the freewheeling of a bicycle pedal, whereby only the acceleration proportion of the crankshaft’s rotational irregularities is used to drive the alternator.
The advantages from this include more effective damping of belt oscillations, which means you no longer need idler pulleys or damping pulleys. You also get a reduction of tensioning forces and lengths, as well as improved noise behaviour, reduced belt width and increased system life.
The use of alternators with high mass inertia is also possible. In terms of assembly, the overrunning alternator pulley is easy to fit, as no separate fasteners are required.”
This important contribution towards improving energy efficiency also explains why the OAP has been so successful in both diesel and petrol engines. The component – which has been established for around
15 years now – was regarded early on as a key component for eliminating the rotational irregularities from the belt drive of the new generation of high torque, direct-injection diesel engines.
The OAP is now also included in the extensive list of measures for optimising the fuel consumption of internal combustion engines.
A comprehensive modular OAP system has been developed that offers many different custom designs for diesel and petrol engines, passenger cars, commercial vehicles and motorcycles. These include an OAP manufactured partly to aircraft specifications, which is used in the
Schaeffler Audi A4 DTM.

The strategic development of the Beckhoff Motion division is progressing rapidly. Following a development period of just 1½ years, Beckhoff will unveil the new
AM8000 motor series at SPS/
IPC/DRIVES 2011. The rotary synchronous servomotors, which are available in standard and stainless steel designs, are characterised by high dynamics, energy efficiency and low costs. One of the AM8000 highlights is the new single-cable technology, with which the power and feedback system are combined in one standard motor cable. Material and commissioning costs can be significantly lowered as a result.
Among other things, the modern salient pole winding technology is used in the motor, which enables an even higher slot fill factor.
Small end turns in conjunction with a fully encapsulated stator provide robustness and excellent thermal management. Through the optimised design and use of high-quality materials, it has been possible to increase AM8000 energy efficiency by more than
10 % compared to conventional servomotors.
With the introduction of the new AM8000 high-performance servomotor series, Beckhoff now offers a complete automation system consisting of PC-based controllers, I/O, Drives and motors
– completely from the company’s own development and production. In combination with Servo Drives from the AX series, to which the AM8000 series is perfectly matched with regard to power rating and windings,
Beckhoff can fulfil customer requests even more flexibly. Apart from high availability and flexibility, development and production in
Germany ensures consistently high quality. This new servomotor series will be available from the 1st quarter of 2012.
The AM8000 series encompasses six different motor sizes, each with two or three optional overall lengths, so that the widest possible torque range is covered seamlessly with overlaps. The user can select a motor suitable for universal use from a stall torque range of 0.9 to
65 Nm. The sophisticated rotor and stator technology represent the actual basis for the new servomotor.
Single-cable solution for power and feedback system reduces component and commissioning costs
With the new single-cable technology from Beckhoff, which gets by without an additional feedback cable, power and process data are transmitted in one standard motor cable. The encoder data, rotor position, multi-turn information and the status of the thermal conditions in the motor are transmitted reliably and free from interference via a digital interface. This results in significant cost savings, since plug connectors and cables are eliminated at both the motor and the controller ends.
Backlash-free permanent magnet holding brakes and low-backlash planetary gears are also offered as options.

At SPS/ IPC Nuremberg, Emerson
Industrial Automation exhibited
Control Techniques’ top of the range’ drive products and solutions for industry alongside Leroy-Somer, a world leader in the manufacture of industrial motors and alternators.
Emerson companies believe in working closely together to find complete solutions for industry. To demonstrate this philosophy, Control
Techniques and Leroy-Somer will be showcasing various joint projects at their stand, such as the new DC
Source test rig (DC Quelle) for the automotive industry.
The DC Quelle is a complete solution for testing all types of hybrid and electric vehicles. This advanced test rig both simulates the characteristics of the batteries and saves energy too, by using a common DC bus to re-circulate energy generated during test braking.
Another high-profile exhibit was the
‘mia’ electric car, which incorporates a Leroy-Somer motor. The mia, which went into production in summer, has a high efficiency
10kW asynchronous squirrel-cage, air-cooled AC motor as its means of propulsion.
Available in three configurations, the mia is revolutionary, equipped for urban mobility and developed to fulfil everyday needs.

The popularity of the Huco Dynatork
Oldham coupling continues to grow and this model has now been given another competitive edge. In addition to being available in the widest choice of materials to suit the application the Huco Dynatork
Oldham can now be manufactured, in small batches from bar, in as little as two working days. This is a market leading response time.
between the tenons and the torque disc. The disc is precision moulded from high grade engineering polymers and, being easily replaced at low cost, is the sacrificial element in the drive train; radiation and heat resistant torque discs are also available.
This customer benefit has been achieved through a combination of investment in flexible production technology and the adoption of lean techniques. “This has given us ultimate manufacturing flexibility and one piece flow,” explains
Managing Director, David Lockett.
“And furthermore this improved service comes at no extra cost to the customer. It means minimal inventory and better business efficiency all round.”
If severely overloaded the torque disc will break, acting as a mechanical fuse, thereby protecting associated equipment from damage. A replacement torque disc quickly restores the drive without the need to dismantle the drive system.
The Oldham has been an important part of the Huco range since the mid-80s but the way they are manufactured has changed substantially in the intervening years.
Indeed, in recent years the lead time on small batches had been cut to
5 days but larger orders inevitably involved unproductive queuing in the manufacturing process and a high inventory. Now it is the subject of continuous end to end production.
The Huco Dynatork Oldham is precision engineered throughout and comprises two hubs with inward facing tenons. These engage with matching slots spaced at 90° in a central lightweight torque disc.
As the coupling rotates, the disc compensates for any parallel shaft offset by sliding the commensurate distance along each tenon in turn.
“Our lean manufacturing programme has allowed us to tighten up procedures right through to customer service,” David Lockett continues.
“The Oldham development shows we are as committed to sharp response as we are to product excellence.”

There is hardly a new car on the road these days that does not use plastic bearings in an application which would have traditionally use metal bearings.
From seats to steering systems, throttle linkages to transmission, clutch pedals to convertible roofs, diesel exhaust systems to door hinges, igus® iglidur® plastic bearings are saving time and money for many automotive manufacturers.
The igus bearing range consists of over 35 standard materials, as well as hundreds of special tribological solutions. For example, iglidur plastic bearings are now commonly used in hinge systems that have to go through the E-Coat paint process, and special parts can be supplied that give a finished bearing with literally no clearance at all – a perfect transition fit.
Special parts, even for underthe-bonnet applications where extreme temperatures and harsh environmental conditions are prevalent, can be produced to a customer’s own design and, using fast moulding techniques, delivered in as little as 24 hours. The use of iglidur plain bearings is kinder to the environment and saves cost too. igus UK also holds ISO 9001 and
140001 accreditation, as well as the automotive TS16949.

Aerotech’s new MPS75SL series miniature linear positioning stages are just 75 mm wide and available in four travel ranges from 25 mm to
100 mm. Aimed at applications in university labs, or R&D centres that require precision alignment, or for assembly, test and measurement in industrial production environments, the small footprint and low-profile stage design is optimised in the use of the latest generation of miniature
1 mm pitch precision ballscrews, high resolution encoders and anticreep crossed roller bearings for ultra smooth velocity and reduced error motion. The MPS75SL is available in a choice of standard precision or with Aerotech’s HALAR linear error-corrected certified precision. Standard precision is +/-
4 microns whilst HALAR calibrated accuracy is +/-1.5 microns for the
100 mm travel version, with bidirectional repeatability of +/- 0.75 microns. For motion control flexibility the MPS75SL is available with a choice of brushed DC motor or open loop stepper motor, both offering a linear positioning resolution to 0.1 microns.
Although small in size the MPS75SL has a 15 kg direct load rating which allows a practical offset load factor thanks to the choice of crossed roller bearings. This is particularly important for maintaining high stiffness in multi-axis configurations which are made straightforward by direct carriage to stage body mounting for X-Y set-ups and optional right-angle L-brackets for vertical Z-axis mounting; as well as breadboard mounting plates for customer work piece clamping.
All multi-axis configurations are available in a choice of XY, XZ or
YZ orthogonal precision to 5 or 10 arc-sec. A bellows protection cover option is also available.
The new stages are a part of a complete family of MPS (Miniature
Positioning Stage) motorised positioners that include linear, rotary, goniometer, and vertical lift and Z stages. Also recently launched, the new MPS50SL linear stage has a similar construction to the larger MPS75 stage but its width is just 50 mm with travel range of 25 mm or 50 mm. The motor and configuration options are also similar and the stage can be directly mounted to the MPS75 for even more space-saving potential.
As with many of Aerotech’s precision positioning mechanics, the
MPS range is available with optional high-vacuum preparation to 10-6 torr where modified materials, surface preparation, hardware venting, lubrication and other features can be modified for applications within vacuum chambers for manufacturing, inspection, and military/aerospace use
Aerotech can deliver complete motion solutions – assembled and fully calibrated with controllers set-up and ready to deliver results from the start. All equipment is fully documented with performance and calibration data, detailed operation manuals and wiring diagrams. Comprehensive technical support with optional training and on-site assistance further reduces commissioning time to ensure minimum customer learning curve and fastest time to market.
Motion controls that complement the MPS family include PC based software-only or hardware based rack or desk mount packages combining advanced motion and machine control commands that are designed to optimise performance, speed set-up times, increase throughput and enable higher quality finished parts or test quality.
A wide choice of programming options include RS-274 G-code,
AeroBasic™, IEC61131-3, Microsoft
.NET Framework and LabVIEW™ for varying levels of advanced software and analytical functionality.

Trio Motion has expanded its Motion
Coordinator range with two new motion and machine controllers based on the latest 533MHz ARM11 processor - flexibly and economically providing new levels of multi-tasking servo or stepper control for high performance automation. with an abundance of performance enhancements that the ARM11 core has enabled. With more than four times the clock frequency at
533MHz, an improved selectable servo update rate from 125 to 2000 microseconds and a maximum data table size of 512K, the double floating point precision processor delivers much improved servo loop accuracy with fast 64 bit real-number mathematics and 64 bit integer position registers.
These new Motion Coordinators include a complement of built-in digital and analogue I/O with a fast dual position input capture capability on every axis. Electronic switches with supporting FIFO’s on each axis allow outputs to be accurately toggled, for example for laser control. A CANbus expansion port provides a CANopen master or DeviceNet slave as well as optional TrioCAN I/O modules for up to 512 digital I/O points and 32,
12bit analogue inputs and 16 12bit analogue outputs.
The MC403 will control two servo axes with a master encoder input, or three stepper axes; whilst the
MC405 has a choice of four servos plus a master encoder or five step and direction axes. The 6MHz servo encoder ports are selectable for incremental linear or rotary feedback or may be configured for
SSI, Tamagawa and EnDat absolute types. The maximum stepper output frequency is 2MHz. Any combination of servo and stepper axes is possible.
The new MC403 and MC405 build on previous Motion Coordinators
The ability to use multi-tasking
TrioBASIC and/or IEC 61131-
3 programming support allows
OEMs and end-users the maximum flexibility for tightly synchronised, high throughput motion and machine control. The MC403 and MC405 will suit applications where any combination of linear or interpolated motion, electronic gearbox or linked axes need to be coordinated with machine I/O and sensor interfacing. Trio’s
Motion Perfect support software provides a fully scalable single programming environment across all of the Motion Coordinator range for setting up, motor tuning and diagnostics. Other programming possibilities for both models include TrioPC for ActiveX with HPGL and DXF import capability. A G-code programmable option is coming soon.
Both models have a built-in RJ45
Ethernet port for programming and connection of HMI or other devices; protocols available include Modbus
TCP and Ethernet IP. There is also both RS232 and 485 serial ports as an alternative for communications, or for use with Modbus-RTU, Hostlink or user programmable devices.
Memory expansion is made possible with a Micro SD card slot that also allows program and configuration data transfer across machines.
The attractive and neatly packaged
MC403 and MC405 Motion
Coordinators suit enclosure, panel or DIN-rail mounting with a singlepiece cast metal back plate that provides an integrated earth chassis for improved EMC performance. A combination of removable screw terminals and D-type connectors provide fast and convenient interfacing.
The discernible differences between the two models, apart from the axis count and the encoder provision, relate to the multitasking capability and the number of virtual axes available, as well physical variations such as I/O count, size and status display: The 2-servo/3-stepper
MC403 can run six simultaneous tasks and has a total of eight axes in software, whilst the MC405 runs up to ten tasks with sixteen axes in software. Axes not assigned to builtin hardware can be used virtually which is particularly useful for simulated motion or event timing.
Both controllers have eight 24VDC inputs and two 12bit analogue inputs, but the physically larger
MC405 has ten rather than six registration inputs and eight rather than four 24V bidirectional I/O channels. Furthermore the MC405 includes an LCD display in addition to the two status LEDs available on the MC403.
The MC403 and MC405 Motion
Coordinators are aimed at relatively low axis count applications.
Trio Motion’s MC464 Motion
Coordinator offers a diverse multi-axis capability for up to 64 independently configured servo or stepper axes together with a very wide range of fieldbus protocols, increased multitask support and numerous additional features where more complex motion and machine control is required.
