Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg Pre-Course for Prospective Refugee Students with an Emphasis on Natural Sciences and Engineering The University of Freiburg will offer a pre-course starting in the 2016 summer semester. The course is designed for qualified refugees who are interested in taking up a course of study in a natural sciences or engineering field. In order to receive admission to a course of study in their desired field, participants must submit a separate application in the proper form and before the application deadline after completing the pre-course. Course participants are not matriculated as students. Upon successful completion of the pre-course, it is only possible to take up a course of study in the 2016/17 winter semester in fields of study with free admissions. What is a Pre-Course? German Course The pre-course is a six-month course designed to prepare you for a course of study. It will be held from April to September 2016. In order to study in Germany, you need to have sufficient German language skills. In the mornings, you will thus receive general language teaching as well as an introduction to the German higher education system and to academic work. Participants who complete the pre-course and have level C1 language skills may take the DSH at the University of Freiburg in September 2016 to earn a recognized language certificate for university admission. As a rule, it is necessary to achieve the result DSH 2. For more information on the DSH, please contact the Language Teaching Center (SLI). As an alternative, you may also take the TestDaF. In this case you need to achieve at least level 4 in all skills included in the test. For more information on TestDaF, please contact the TestDaF Institute. Field-Specific Courses In the afternoons, you will learn specialized knowledge in group-specific preparatory courses so that you can successfully take up a course of study in your desired field directly upon completion of the pre-course. 2 What Requirements Do I Need to Meet? The course is intended for all prospective refugee students who possess direct higher education entrance qualification for admission to a degree program at the University of Freiburg and are interested in completing a course of study in the natural sciences or engineering in Freiburg. You must also provide evidence of your current residence status to be admitted to the course. Before applying, you should determine your residence status in Germany (e.g., authorization as an asylum seeker, permission to remain until deported, residence permit for specific purposes), whether you can obtain a residence permit if you do not yet have one, and whether you are authorized to reside in Freiburg for study purposes. If you are unsure of your status, please contact the responsible public authorities. Applicants who have fled their native country and have a visa for study purposes or a visa for applying for university admission must submit a written statement explaining why they could not take up the course of study or finish it in their native country. You must have level A2 or B1 German language skills according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CER) at the beginning of the course. You must take a placement test to demonstrate your skills. Once your application has been approved, we will invite you to take this language test. The language test is scheduled for 22 March 2016. What Does the Pre-Course Cost? This pre-course is free of charge. How Can I Apply? If you are a refugee interested in studying and would like to participate in a semester-long precourse in the 2016 summer semester, please submit your complete application (see application form) by (!! extended deadline !!) 10 March 2016.
