Grading Policy:
There will be two exams: Midterm exam on November 03 (15%), 16:00-17:00, and final exam
(comprehensive) on December 18 (25%), 14:00-16:00. Also, there will be homework (20%), and a
project (35%). Class participation (including recitation and discussion sections) will also be
considered too (5%).
In an attempt to be fair to the entire class, the following policy will be enforced in the course. All
exams and quizzes will be “closed book,” however, you may bring to the exam (or quiz) a single
sheet of paper (A4) with your notes on both sides. (You may bring 2 sheets A4 to the final exam.)
Unless otherwise stated: (1) homework’s (including essays) are to be submitted to the instructor in
hardcopy on a standard A4 paper, written on one-side only, (2) electronic (e-mail, fax) submission
of assignments will not be accepted. Writing assignments (essays, projects reports, etc.) should be
written in 12pt Times new roman, single space on A4 papers, with 1 inch margin all over the page.
Late submission of assignments will not be accepted. If you miss the midterm exam or any quiz
due to an “excused absence”, the percentage missed will be added to the final exam. (Note: an
excused absence is one that follows the University guidelines and is approved by the instructor.)
While absences from the class are discouraged, sometimes circumstances arise that require missing
a class. In the event that you do miss a class, it is the student’s responsibility to contact someone in
the class or Dr. Li to determine the material that was covered. Please note that Dr. Li can assist you
in identifying the material that you have missed but that a detailed synopsis of the missed lecture
will not be given.
Review of the grading: If you feel that there is a problem for you grading, you could re-submit your
homework (or exam) to TA or the instructor for a review. However, the review will be conducted
by both the instructor and TA and take some time.
Lots of course materials, assignments, and examples will be distributed through Sakai system.
Important notices will also be distributed through the email system in Sakai. It is students’
responsibility to check the posted information in Sakai and check the course-related emails from
their registered email addresses.
Academic Integrity:
For your information, the UM-STJU JI has a nationally recognized Honor Code of Academic
Integrity. This Code sets standards for academic integrity for all students. As a student you are
responsible for upholding these standards. For more information on the Honor Code at UM-SJTU
Joint Institute, please visit http://umji.sjtu.edu.cn/News_View/?NewsID=2189 or Chapter 8 of
Student Handbook. To further exhibit your commitment to academic integrity, after each
examination, students must sign their names on the Honor Pledge in the test paper. The Honor
Pledge is as follows: "I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this examination, nor
have I concealed any violations of the Honor Code." Instructors are not required to grade tests in
which the signed Honor Pledge does not appear. The Honor Code remains enforced whether or not
the student signs the Pledge.

1. Review steps in the product development process and the significance of early phases of
design
2. Introduce fundamental principles of design and discuss applications of these principles
3. Introduce concepts for design of systems for ease of assembly, manufacture, and other
issues
4. Discuss interrelations among part geometry, tolerances, materials and manufacturing
processes
5. Introduce principles of parametric study, design optimization, and robust design
Outline:
1. Product development process
2. Problem definition and customer requirement
3. Quality function deployment
4. Product design specifications
5. Concept generation and brainstorming
6. Function Decomposition and Synthesis
7. TRIZ and Axiomatic design
8. Concept selection, parametric study
9. Dimension and tolerance
10. Rapid prototyping
11. Material selection
12. Design for Manufacturing
13. Design optimization, robust design, Taguchi methods
Homework:
There will be totally three sets of homework (including essays and assigned questions from the text
book). The first two sets will be due before the midterm: on September 29 and October 27. The
third set will be due on December 08. Homework questions are not only from the textbook, but also
include essay writing. Three sets will take 6%, 7% and 7% of the grading respectively.

Design Journal:
Every individual student is expected to have a “Design Journal”. The journal is used to record ideas,
sketches, comments, bits of information as they come to mind, sources of information, assumptions
and possible solutions to a problem. It does not need to be well organized but it must be legible.
Occasionally, the journal will be used to write essays, as assigned by the instructor. The journal
may be examined during the semester and must be submitted together with the final report to the
instructor at the end of the semester.
Project:
Course-work will also consist of a semester-long group project. I will choose your group members.
You will then choose a problem from an area of mechanical engineering with which you have
sufficient familiarity and interest. You will define and formulate a product design problem and the
project will cover the entire product development process. The project on this product will include a
series of writing assignments, an interim report (due on November 17), a case study on design
method, and CAD and analytical model development. Simple examples of adequate projects will be
given. Final project presentations are to be on December 8. There will be a detailed final report for
the project which will be due on December 18, before the start of the final exam.
Contribution to Course:
Students must proactively participate with the instructor in the class discussion, and in teaching and
learning form the course. The course format will involve introductory lectures by the instructor on
engineering design, and presentations by student teams on their team projects.
Each group will have one chance to write the course notes (in doc or ppt format) for one topic
discussed within the course as a contribution to course quality. The course notes will be posted
online, discussed in the recitation section, and will be available to every student to enhance their
understanding the course materials. 1%~ 5% extra bonus will be given to all members of the group,
based on the quality and evaluation of their course notes. The evaluation will be done by the
instructor and TA at the end of the semester.
Acknowledge:
Thanks Dr. G. Dieter and Dr. L. Schmidt for providing lots of course materials along with the
insight of the textbook.
