Prior to the service, at 5:30, a candlelight
peace procession will begin at 7th and Cincinnati. A shuttle service will be provided at 4:45
from the church to the beginning of the processional. Walkers should bring a flashlight.
On Monday all are invited to walk in the
M.L. King, Jr. Parade. Our youth are decorating a float, which will be added to our buses in
the parade. They invite all to meet them at the
church by 9:30 a.m. to go to the 11:00 parade.
Call Dr. Bill Crowell, 699-0127, to participate.
Enrollment begins this Sunday, January 16th, for an additional
thirty-four week Disciple Bible Study class and two ten-week Invitation courses. More long-term Disciple Bible Study classes began last
fall and are still underway,
Those who have never taken a Disciple Bible Study course
before, or who want to explore the entire Bible again, are encouraged
to join Rev. Paul Staat and DeAnn McArtor for Disciple I. This
course covers Genesis through Revelation. This class is the foundation for all other Disciple Bible Study courses.
Classes begin February 6th and will be held each Sunday evening
at 6:00. The study term will be split into two parts to allow for a
summer break.
Those who would like to know more about the Gospel of John
are invited to join facilitators Sheila Van Hersh and Darlyn Slater in a
ten-week Invitation to John class starting February 22nd. Students
will learn how this gospel is set apart from the “synoptic” gospels Matthew, Mark and Luke. After an introduction class on February
22nd, classes will be held on Mondays at 10:00 a.m. in the church
library. An Invitation to the New Testament class will also be
offered.
Registration tables will be available in Bishop’s Hall the next
three Sundays - January 16th , 23rd, and 30th - before and after each
worship service. Each class will be an enriching opportunity to
increase your understanding of Scripture as part of your continuing
faith development.

From the

Mouzon Biggs, Jr.
Sunday was cloudy and cold, but you had set your alarms and
were here in good numbers for Sunday school and church. Thank
you for making faithful, every-week attendance one of your goals
for 2011. We are off to a great start.

This Sunday’s lection comes from “Trito-Isaiah,” the third portion of the Book of Isaiah. Our best Christian scholars believe this
text was written from Judah after the Persians had overrun the
Babylonians and allowed the Jews to go home. Those who went
home found a devastated homeland.
No one had rebuilt the temple. No one had rebuilt the walls
designed to protect the city. The Canaanites had reasserted themselves and held all the best grazing lands, the best watering holes,
the olive groves, the vineyards, and the best farmlands.
This unknown author describes Judah as a woman divorced by
her husband - defenseless, friendless, and poverty-stricken. He sees
Israel’s God coming to “marry” Judah as a “bridegroom rejoicing
over his bride.” Things are sure to get better!
I am calling the sermon, “TOMORROW WILL BE BETTER I PROMISE!”
