(FBO’S)
P14
Johannesburg, South Africa (11
April 2016) – NAC and Awesome
Aviation Group have been firmly
entrenched in joint business
ventures for well over a decade
and the relationship between
these two successful companies
has been extremely beneficial to
their stakeholders. As a result of
this successful collaboration, NAC
and Awesome Aviation Group have
reached agreement to merge their
Flight Operations and Aircraft
Leasing businesses globally.
To this end, NAC has acquired a 50%
equity stake in Awesome Flight Services,
Awesome Aviation Group’s existing
flight operations business based in South
Africa. Awesome Flight Services has in
turn acquired the NAC International
Contracts and Maintenance business
divisions from NAC. The assets and staff
of the NAC International Contracts and
Maintenance divisions will be integrated
into the existing Awesome Flight Services
infrastructure. The combined businesses
will be rebranded as FlyAwesome and
the company will trade under this brand
globally.
Tertius van Jaarsveld (currently Executive
Director of Operations – NAC) has been
appointed as CEO of FlyAwesome; Martin
Banner (CEO - NAC) and David Vinokur
(CEO – Global Capital) have both been
appointed to the Board of FlyAwesome
and Dieter Ebeling (CEO - Awesome
Aviation Group) has been appointed
Executive Chairman.
There will be a transition period whilst
existing contracts are in place, but all
future contracts globally will be serviced
under the FlyAwesome brand.
Internationally, NAC has acquired 50%
of FlyAwesome Australia who recently
gained an Australian AOC, with immediate
endeavours underway to establish a
Europe-Middle East Base to service existing
operational deployments in that region
Other companies and divisions of NAC
and Awesome Group remain unaffected
by this transaction and will continue
trading as normal.
Martin Banner, CEO of NAC:
”Our JV with Awesome Aviation over
the past decade has achieved amazing
results and we are very excited to expand
our relationship to incorporate all of our
global flight operations and aircraft leasing
assets. The quality of our customer base,
our aircraft and our expanded suite of
services, our keen focus on quality and
safety, combined with our terrific pool
of skilled people and resources will bring
enormous benefits to the market in the
future.”
Dieter Ebeling, CEO Awesome
Aviation Group:
“This is the coming together of two
exceptional businesses. With our friends
at NAC, we are adding significant scale,
infrastructure, skill and capability to an
already highly successful model. We will
increase our aircraft fleet and operations
bases substantially, resulting in huge
benefits to our customers. The streamlining
of flight operations, the expanded aircraft
asset ownership and the human capital
being deployed with this “Dream Team” in
special missions operations will make for
a formidable force in the contracts leasing
environment.”
Expanding the successful formula in
Awesome Flight Logistics, the dry leasing
JV between the groups, NAC will be
contributing aircraft assets and taking a
50% stake in Awesome Asset Securities
in Australia, an aircraft asset ownership
company held by Awesome Aviation
Group,
thus increasing the fleet of
aircraft assets owned within the NAC and
Awesome Aviation Group JV’s.
After these transactions, the combined
entities will therefore have two distinct
offerings in the supply of aircraft:
FlyAwesome, offering ACMI + Operations
and Awesome Flight Logistics and
Awesome Asset Securities offering Dry
Lease solutions.
Tertius van Jaarsveld (CEO FlyAwesome), Martin Banner (CEO, NAC), Dieter Ebeling (CEO,

PIPER M600 ENTERS FINAL STAGES OF CERTIFICATION
VERO BEACH, Fla., March 18,
2016 – Piper Aircraft announced
today that the FAA has issued Type
Inspection Authorization (TIA) for
the Piper M600. The issuance of TIA
marks a significant milestone for
the aircraft certification program.
TIA initiates the formal FAA flight
evaluation of the M600 type design,
airworthiness, performance, and
handling characteristics.
The TIA authorization was granted
following the conclusion of a rigorous
company flight testing program which
included more than 1440 hours todate on three M600 development test
aircraft. The three M600s in the flight
test fleet have exceeded expectations
by demonstrating a max speed of 274
ktas and a max range of 1441 NM.
The performance is greater than the
originally planned speed of 260 ktas
and 1200 nm range.
“The M600 test articles have performed
flawlessly and have exceeded our
expectations. The additional 14 kts of
speed and 241nm of range is a huge
bonus for our customers and further
enhances the overall value proposition
of the product.” said Piper President
and CEO Simon Caldecott, “TIA for the
M600 is the culmination of many long
hours of work by our entire team, close
coordination with the FAA, and the
backing of our shareholders, our dealers
and customers around the world.”
Piper Aircraft is targeting final FAA type
certification of the M600 in the third
quarter, following the completion of
certification testing and type design
approval by the FAA.
About M600
The M600 seats six and is powered
by a Pratt & Whitney PT6A-42A
600 shp engine. The aircraft has a
maximum speed of 274 ktas / 507
km/h and has a max range of 1,441
nm / 2,669 km. The G3000 avionics
suite is the most sophisticated Garmin
technology available and offers the
most comprehensive, intuitive, and
technologically advanced package on
today’s market. With the G3000 the
mechanics of flight deck management
are easier and more efficient by
design. Integrating control of various
radios, audio and intercom channels,
transponder codes, charts, mapping,
flight plan entry and other functions, the
Garmin GTC 570 touchscreen controller
provides a centralized point of access
for the majority of all avionics tuning,
selection and data inputs. The aircraft
has enhanced safety features which
include Emergency Descent Mode,
Electronic Stability Protection, Level
Mode and Underspeed / Overspeed
Protection.
The newly redesigned interior features
newly styled seats which have been
optimized for comfort, as well as
enhanced side panels with improved
passenger interface. Additionally three
new color palettes have thoughtfully
been created with the customer in mind.
A comprehensive survey process helped
identify the features and attributes that
would be most appreciated by both
pilots and customers. The 2016 M600
is listed at a competitive price of $2.853
million.

M600 – More than meets the eye!
More than meets the eye!
Piper Aircraft has selected its Vero Beach, Fla. neighbor, Legacy Flight Training, as the
official training provider for the M600 turboprop single, the airframer’s latest addition
to its product lineup.
“The selection process was highly
competitive and Legacy’s customerfocused
approach,
technological
leadership and factory-located training
center are what set it apart,” said
Drew McEwen, Piper’s v-p of sales
and marketing. “We’ll be ready for
customers with a complete training
program, including the deployment of
a full-motion flight training device, to
support entry-into-service of the M600
later this year.”
The company’s new flagship, the six–
seat M600, launched in May 2015, was
named for the available 600 shp from
its Pratt & Whitney PT6A-42A. Equipped
with the Garmin G3000 avionics suite, it
has a range of more than 1,400 nm and
a maximum cruising speed of 274 ktas.
Larry Pilots the M600
What could the factory have possibly been thinking?
by Larry Johnson, Cutter Texas Piper
...this exemplifies
a theme repeated
through several
areas of the M-600;
lower costs, higher
reliability, simpler
systems!
About two weeks ago I had the rare
and unexpected opportunity to be
one of the first non-test pilots to
fly Piper’s new M600. Because of
my experience working with Texas
Aircraft owners who fly long range
missions, the people at Piper thought
my operational experience might be
suited to provide unique input. The
M600 promises to fulfill a very nice
performance gap that can reach each
coast non stop and be economical at
the same time.
Test Flight Day
The scheduled day arrived and I
showed up for a 7:00AM departure
out of Vero Beach, Florida at the
Piper factory. I met Jim Duncan,
one of Piper’s Engineering Test
Pilots while trying my best to keep
my excitement down to a dull roar.
Jim and I briefed about what the
morning would hold for the flight.
I was pleasantly surprised when he
said we had a clean slate with which
to play. I say again, “What could the
factory have possibly been thinking
to let me get at the controls of this
new beast!” My original plan was to
sit right seat and let Jim do the flying
which would allow me to observe and
take pictures. That idea lasted all of 2
seconds. When we climbed aboard,
my base-pilot instincts took over and
I jumped in the left seat; I just had to
fly this bird myself to compare to the
Meridian and other single and twin
turbo props and even jets I’ve flown in
my career.

contemporary look on the ramp."
Muncie Aviation Co. is among the first customers
for the new Meridian five-blade propeller. "As
a Piper dealer, we are thrilled to begin the
Meridian aftermarket installations, building on
the exceptional customer acceptance for other
Hartzell five-blade propeller installations," said
Muncie Aviation President Martin Ingram. "These
new swept airfoil props look great and they
increase the asset value for this excellent business
aircraft through increased performance."
The durability of the new Hartzell prop integrates
exceptionally well with the Piper Meridian and
M500 for all around better performance. Optimal

The new Hartzell Propeller blades are certified for
unlimited life and are five to 10 times stronger
than wood core blades. They feature a stainless
steel shank, nickel cobalt leading edge, and mesh
erosion screen for FOD protection. Hartzell's
latest Piper five-blade design is 15 pounds lighter
than the current factory installed aluminum
four-blade propeller and 10 pounds lighter than
similar wood core propellers.

In 2015, Bell Helicopter delivered 175 aircraft,
a combination of its current production
products as follows:
•
•
•
•
52 x Bell 429
12 x Bell 412 (EP/EPI)
99 x Bell 407 (GX/GXP)
12 x Bell 206L4
Regional deliveries include:
•28 commercial helicopters to countries in the
Pacific Rim
• 69 civil aircraft in North America
• 31 deliveries in Latin America, and

The company also launched the Bell 407GXP and
announced the largest helicopter order in Bell
Helicopter history for 200 407GXPs to Air Methods
Corporation. The first of those aircraft were
delivered in January 2016.
Advancements to the Bell 412 helped secure a
major win in Japan and will serve as the foundation
for Japan’s Ministry of Defense UH-X development
program. UH-X is a co-development program
between Bell Helicopter and Fuji Heavy Industries
for approximately 150 helicopters, to be delivered
over the next two decades.
“2015 was a challenging year for the helicopter
industry with ongoing impacts of the decline in oil
and gas, continued geopolitical unrest and global
economic uncertainty,” said Mitch Snyder, Bell
Helicopter’s president and CEO. “Despite tough
market conditions, Bell Helicopter expanded market
presence and secured a number of key wins.”
Bell Helicopter’s development programs made
significant progress and received impressive
customer response. The Bell 525 achieved first
flight in July 2015 and has accumulated nearly
80 letters of intent. The Bell 505 continued
its flight test program and now has letters

potential 12 AH-1Z aircraft for Pakistan.
Bell Helicopter also added support, service and
training capabilities at its Prague and Singapore
locations as well as opening regional offices
in Japan and Mexico, the new Bell Helicopter
Training Academy in Fort Worth, Texas, and the
Lafayette Assembly Center in Louisiana.
“Our customers are looking for differentiation
that expands the scope of their operations,”
said Snyder. “Bell Helicopter’s success last year
is a testament to the value our products add
to our customers’ missions. We look forward
to continue working with our customers to
advance existing technologies and further the
future of rotorcraft.”

BELL HELICOPTER’S AERONAUTICAL
ACCESSORIES BRAND PROMOTES
SAFETY WITH NEW BELL 206
POLYCARBONATE WINDSHIELD
HAI HELI-EXPO, Louisville, Kentucky (March 1, 2016) – Bell Helicopter, a
Textron Inc. company (NYSE: TXT), announced today that it has received an FAA
Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for its polycarbonate windshields on Bell
206A, Bell 206B, and Bell 206L series aircraft, which will be distributed exclusively
under its Aeronautical Accessories brand.
Developed by Bell Helicopter, the new 206
polycarbonate windshield is impact resistant,
offering superior impact performance compared to
acrylic windshields. The patent-pending windshield
was designed in response to the success of the Bell
407 Polycarbonate windshield and offers several
safety benefits. The windshield deflects objects
away from the cockpit and significantly decreases
the likelihood of objects breaching the windshield
upon impact.
Designed as a replacement kit for existing Bell
206 series models, the windshield kit contains an
exclusive mounting system of composite edging,
adhesives and fasteners to provide increased
flexing. The strapped edging and independent
corner support design allow for improved impact
resistance. The kit is also available for installation

polycarbonate windshield is available individually
or as a set.
“The new Bell 206 polycarbonate windshield was
developed in response to our customers requesting
a design to increase the reliability, safety and
performance of their aircraft,” said Jennifer
Lunceford, manager of Sales for Aeronautical
Accessories. “The product offers an impact
resistant solution for Bell 206 customers who want
only one polycarbonate windshield installed, or for
customers who want to upgrade both the pilot
and co-pilot side of the aircraft.”

We once again had the opportunity to work with the Saudi Arabian Royals, providing
them with four twin aircraft and one Bell 407 for a month long charter!
It took quite a bit of planning, a lot of organizing, last minute changes, over tired laughs and all
those crazy in between moments that make it all worth it.
Great seeing how we truly followed the famous slogan of NAC “Forward as one”. A big thank you
to the whole team, for being so flexible and eager to ensure the success of such a big charter!
Following on from the article we published
in a previous edition of Hangar Talk XPress,
herewith an update on the development of
the Starliner – straight from the horse’s
mouth …
At this time the manufacturer is focusing
exclusively on the 50 passenger Starliner 100.
The various avionics manufacturers have been
visited and will now compete to come up with
the most innovative and future oriented suite.
Same goes for the engine manufacturers who
have all been visited and who have been invited
to propose their most suitable engine to power
the SL-100.
Range for the SL100 is well over 2.000 NM with a
balance field length of 4.400 feet. Cruise will be
Mach 0.8 and burn 1800 lbs of Jet A1.
The interior of the Alliance Aircraft family of
aircrafts is being designed with anatomic seats
with 20-inch width and a comfortable 20-inch
aisle with large overhead bins with volume
sufficient to satisfy the needs of passengers
during the winter season to assure passenger
comfort. Under-the-floor baggage compartments
will provide more than 10 cubic feet of checked
baggage for each passenger.
Timeline for the SL100 is deliveries starting very
end of 2019 and early 2020. Type certification
with FAA and EASA in 2019.
Announcements of the final avionics and engine
choices are expected shortly.

SINGLE-PILOT OPS, GROUND
HANDLING TOP NBAA
SAFETY LIST BY KERRY LYNCH – MARCH 14, 2016
NBAA’s Safety Committee late last week released its annual list of “Top Safety Focus
Areas,” adding the single-pilot accident rate and ground-handling incidents to its most
pressing safety concerns for 2016. The list, now in its fourth year, is derived from survey
results along with risk-based safety data and other input from NBAA members and other
industry and regulatory partners. The list is designed to foster focused discussions on key
safety areas and determine how best to allocate safety-improvement resources.
In adding the single-pilot accident rate to the list, NBAA cited concerns that single-piloted turboprop
aircraft have a 1.5 times greater chance of being involved in an accident than dual-piloted aircraft.
Further, 60 percent of accidents involving turboprops certified for single-pilot operations occurred
while being flown by a single pilot, the association said.
As for ground-handling incidents, NBAA noted that 48 percent of respondents to its survey reported
having one to three incidents within the past three years and 8 percent reported having four to nine
incidents or close calls.
In addition to the single-pilot accident rate and ground-handling incidents, the committee retained
loss of control in flight (LOC-I) and runway excursions on this year’s list. The committee also outlined
a series of notable safety hazards: intentional non-compliance, distractions from duty, fatigue, task
saturation, bird and wildlife issues, intentional laser strikes, airspace complexities and pilot deviations.
“The NBAA Safety Committee’s data-driven approach to identifying the most significant risks yields
clear results,” said NBAA Safety Committee chairman Steve Charbonneau. “Loss of control in flight
and runway excursions remain significant risks, and our research shows that single-pilot operations
and ground-handling incidents are equally worthy of significant safety-improvement efforts. NBAA,
in collaboration with industry partners, will dedicate substantial resources to develop tools and
programs designed to help operators mitigate these risks.”

FIVE FACTS ABOUT FBO’S
This article is reproduced from the February/March edition of Business Jet Traveler with kind permission of AIN
Publications and the author Mark Phelps
As a BJT reader, you’re undoubtedly aware
that folks who fly privately can usually use
separate terminals—known as FBOs—to board
and disembark from their aircraft. You also
know that FBOs mean no long security lines,
dehumanizing searches, or crowded gates—just
quiet, comfortable waiting areas or even the
ability to skip the building and drive right up to
the airplane.
But there’s a lot you may not know about the
businesses that operate these terminals. Let’s look
at five of the questions I hear most often about
FBOs from business jet travelers.
the most convenient pasture close to town, they
would offer rides or perform aerial shows in
exchange for money, food or, ¬sometimes, just
enough gas to make it to the next destination.
Occasionally, a barnstormer would weary of the
grind and decide to settle in one of the towns,
providing services such as flying businesspeople
around, giving flying lessons, or performing other
aviation-related activity such as crop dusting.
These ad hoc businesses became known as “fixedbase operators” (FBOs), to distinguish them from
their gypsy counterparts. The name stuck.
2. How do FBOs earn a living?
In the U.S., fuel sales are the most common
profit center, but hangar rental, maintenance,
aircraft sales, charter, a flying school, or some
other specialty might contribute to the cash flow.
Income sources depend heavily on the location,
the character of traffic, and the local airport
management.
3. Why is it so darned hard to find the
FBO at many airports?
1. What does FBO stand for, anyway?
In the early post-World War I days, young, exmilitary pilots who just couldn’t stay on the
ground would fly war-surplus biplanes from
town to town, either one at a time or in ¬“flying
circuses” of two, three, or more. Operating from
FBOs guard the privacy and security of their
customers, so you won’t see neon signs with
arrows pointing the way. Make sure the friend or
limo driver meeting you calls ahead for detailed
directions. And if the airport is a major business
aviation destination, be sure to specify which FBO
you’re going to. At such airports, there could be
as many as half a dozen.
4. Who manages FBOs?
Though airport authorities operate a few FBOs,
most of them can trace their origins to a private
entrepreneur who started small, probably out of a
14
love of aviation. Many remain individually owned,
but in recent years, several large FBO chains have
taken over some mom-and-pop operations, often
with great success due to the chains’ bargaining
clout and economies of scale. But experience
has shown that a key ingredient to success,
whether taking over an existing FBO or starting
from scratch, is a local management team that
understands the needs of the micro market at the
airport.
5. Why do I feel as if I’ve walked into a
hotel?
FBOs are in the hospitality business. At small
airports, they might be on the cozy B&B level
while, at larger airports, they could be redolent
of five-star resorts. Regardless of size, the most
successful FBOs are staffed by people who
understand that customer service is second in
importance only to safety. So expect amenities like
prompt planeside baggage pickup; refreshments
in the lounge; knowledgeable concierge service
at the desk; and friendly employees whose smiles
may make you smile, too.
