Tertius van Jaarsveld (CEO FlyAwesome), Martin Banner (CEO, NAC), Dieter Ebeling (CEO, Awesome Aviation), Jannie de Klerk (General Manager, FlyAwesome Operations), Mike Mayers (General Manager, FlyAwesome Maintenance) HANGARTALK XPRESS EDITION 16 • APRIL 2016 2 WELCOME TO NATIONAL AIRWAYS CORPORATION’S MONTHLY NEWSLETTER TO THE AVIATION INDUSTRY PIPER M600 ENTERS FINAL STAGES OF CERTIFICATION VERO BEACH, Fla., March 18, 2016 – Piper Aircraft announced today that the FAA has issued Type Inspection Authorization (TIA) for the Piper M600. The issuance of TIA marks a significant milestone for the aircraft certification program. TIA initiates the formal FAA flight evaluation of the M600 type design, airworthiness, performance, and handling characteristics. The TIA authorization was granted following the conclusion of a rigorous company flight testing program which included more than 1440 hours todate on three M600 development test aircraft. The three M600s in the flight test fleet have exceeded expectations by demonstrating a max speed of 274 ktas and a max range of 1441 NM. The performance is greater than the originally planned speed of 260 ktas and 1200 nm range. “The M600 test articles have performed flawlessly and have exceeded our expectations. The additional 14 kts of speed and 241nm of range is a huge bonus for our customers and further enhances the overall value proposition of the product.” said Piper President and CEO Simon Caldecott, “TIA for the M600 is the culmination of many long hours of work by our entire team, close coordination with the FAA, and the backing of our shareholders, our dealers and customers around the world.” Piper Aircraft is targeting final FAA type certification of the M600 in the third quarter, following the completion of certification testing and type design approval by the FAA. About M600 The M600 seats six and is powered by a Pratt & Whitney PT6A-42A 600 shp engine. The aircraft has a maximum speed of 274 ktas / 507 km/h and has a max range of 1,441 nm / 2,669 km. The G3000 avionics suite is the most sophisticated Garmin technology available and offers the most comprehensive, intuitive, and technologically advanced package on today’s market. With the G3000 the mechanics of flight deck management are easier and more efficient by design. Integrating control of various radios, audio and intercom channels, transponder codes, charts, mapping, flight plan entry and other functions, the Garmin GTC 570 touchscreen controller provides a centralized point of access for the majority of all avionics tuning, selection and data inputs. The aircraft has enhanced safety features which include Emergency Descent Mode, Electronic Stability Protection, Level Mode and Underspeed / Overspeed Protection. The newly redesigned interior features newly styled seats which have been optimized for comfort, as well as enhanced side panels with improved passenger interface. Additionally three new color palettes have thoughtfully been created with the customer in mind. A comprehensive survey process helped identify the features and attributes that would be most appreciated by both pilots and customers. The 2016 M600 is listed at a competitive price of $2.853 million. Larry Pilots the M600 What could the factory have possibly been thinking? by Larry Johnson, Cutter Texas Piper ...this exemplifies a theme repeated through several areas of the M-600; lower costs, higher reliability, simpler systems! About two weeks ago I had the rare and unexpected opportunity to be one of the first non-test pilots to fly Piper’s new M600. Because of my experience working with Texas Aircraft owners who fly long range missions, the people at Piper thought my operational experience might be suited to provide unique input. The M600 promises to fulfill a very nice performance gap that can reach each coast non stop and be economical at the same time. Test Flight Day The scheduled day arrived and I showed up for a 7:00AM departure out of Vero Beach, Florida at the Piper factory. I met Jim Duncan, one of Piper’s Engineering Test Pilots while trying my best to keep my excitement down to a dull roar. Jim and I briefed about what the morning would hold for the flight. I was pleasantly surprised when he said we had a clean slate with which to play. I say again, “What could the factory have possibly been thinking to let me get at the controls of this new beast!” My original plan was to sit right seat and let Jim do the flying which would allow me to observe and take pictures. That idea lasted all of 2 seconds. When we climbed aboard, my base-pilot instincts took over and I jumped in the left seat; I just had to fly this bird myself to compare to the Meridian and other single and twin turbo props and even jets I’ve flown in my career. EDITION 16 • APRIL 2016 11 WELCOME TO NATIONAL AIRWAYS CORPORATION’S MONTHLY NEWSLETTER TO THE AVIATION INDUSTRY SINGLE-PILOT OPS, GROUND HANDLING TOP NBAA SAFETY LIST BY KERRY LYNCH – MARCH 14, 2016 NBAA’s Safety Committee late last week released its annual list of “Top Safety Focus Areas,” adding the single-pilot accident rate and ground-handling incidents to its most pressing safety concerns for 2016. The list, now in its fourth year, is derived from survey results along with risk-based safety data and other input from NBAA members and other industry and regulatory partners. The list is designed to foster focused discussions on key safety areas and determine how best to allocate safety-improvement resources. In adding the single-pilot accident rate to the list, NBAA cited concerns that single-piloted turboprop aircraft have a 1.5 times greater chance of being involved in an accident than dual-piloted aircraft. Further, 60 percent of accidents involving turboprops certified for single-pilot operations occurred while being flown by a single pilot, the association said. As for ground-handling incidents, NBAA noted that 48 percent of respondents to its survey reported having one to three incidents within the past three years and 8 percent reported having four to nine incidents or close calls. In addition to the single-pilot accident rate and ground-handling incidents, the committee retained loss of control in flight (LOC-I) and runway excursions on this year’s list. The committee also outlined a series of notable safety hazards: intentional non-compliance, distractions from duty, fatigue, task saturation, bird and wildlife issues, intentional laser strikes, airspace complexities and pilot deviations. “The NBAA Safety Committee’s data-driven approach to identifying the most significant risks yields clear results,” said NBAA Safety Committee chairman Steve Charbonneau. “Loss of control in flight and runway excursions remain significant risks, and our research shows that single-pilot operations and ground-handling incidents are equally worthy of significant safety-improvement efforts. NBAA, in collaboration with industry partners, will dedicate substantial resources to develop tools and programs designed to help operators mitigate these risks.” HANGARTALK XPRESS EDITION 16 • APRIL 2016 12 WELCOME TO NATIONAL AIRWAYS CORPORATION’S MONTHLY NEWSLETTER TO THE AVIATION INDUSTRY UMVUZO Umvuzo is NAC’s staff recognition scheme and has been put in place to reward our employees for going the extra mile and for doing those things that go over and above their job descriptions. You also know that FBOs mean no long security lines, dehumanizing searches, or crowded gates—just quiet, comfortable waiting areas or even the ability to skip the building and drive right up to the airplane. But there’s a lot you may not know about the businesses that operate these terminals. Let’s look at five of the questions I hear most often about FBOs from business jet travelers. the most convenient pasture close to town, they would offer rides or perform aerial shows in exchange for money, food or, ¬sometimes, just enough gas to make it to the next destination. Occasionally, a barnstormer would weary of the grind and decide to settle in one of the towns, providing services such as flying businesspeople around, giving flying lessons, or performing other aviation-related activity such as crop dusting. These ad hoc businesses became known as “fixedbase operators” (FBOs), to distinguish them from their gypsy counterparts. The name stuck. 2. How do FBOs earn a living? In the U.S., fuel sales are the most common profit center, but hangar rental, maintenance, aircraft sales, charter, a flying school, or some other specialty might contribute to the cash flow. Income sources depend heavily on the location, the character of traffic, and the local airport management. 3. Why is it so darned hard to find the FBO at many airports? 1. What does FBO stand for, anyway? In the early post-World War I days, young, exmilitary pilots who just couldn’t stay on the ground would fly war-surplus biplanes from town to town, either one at a time or in ¬“flying circuses” of two, three, or more. Operating from FBOs guard the privacy and security of their customers, so you won’t see neon signs with arrows pointing the way. Make sure the friend or limo driver meeting you calls ahead for detailed directions. And if the airport is a major business aviation destination, be sure to specify which FBO you’re going to. At such airports, there could be as many as half a dozen. 4. Who manages FBOs? Though airport authorities operate a few FBOs, most of them can trace their origins to a private entrepreneur who started small, probably out of a 14 love of aviation. Many remain individually owned, but in recent years, several large FBO chains have taken over some mom-and-pop operations, often with great success due to the chains’ bargaining clout and economies of scale. But experience has shown that a key ingredient to success, whether taking over an existing FBO or starting from scratch, is a local management team that understands the needs of the micro market at the airport. 5. Why do I feel as if I’ve walked into a hotel? FBOs are in the hospitality business. At small airports, they might be on the cozy B&B level while, at larger airports, they could be redolent of five-star resorts.
