Message from the Director, Tammy Baggett
Welcome to the first Durham County Library
annual report of my tenure. I am so proud of our
library and the great collection, programs and
services we provide to our community. In this
publication, we present a snapshot of who we
are and what we do as a library, and we highlight
the exceptional things that we accomplished
in the last fiscal year. I am delighted to have
this opportunity to take stock, give thanks and
celebrate our milestones and successes.
As you will see in the following pages, great
things happened in FY 2012, as our patrons
broke records visiting the library in person and
online. Circulation topped three million for the
first time, program attendance reached an alltime high and we saw almost three million visits
to the library website. In addition, we celebrated
a 50th anniversary for one of our historic library
branches, and we embraced new technology
by making ebooks available to our patrons.
All in all, the library made great strides toward
reaching the strategic goals outlined early in
the fiscal year: service excellence, growth and
innovation.
Durham County Library is a wonderful place to
participate, learn and play because of the work
and dedication of a great many people. First, we
are grateful to our County Commissioners for
having the foresight to build a premier library
system. Second, we thank the members of the
library family: the Board of Trustees, Durham
Library Foundation and the Friends of the
Durham Library, for all the time, energy and
resources they give to the library every day.
Many of the wonderful initiatives included in
this report – and in fact, the report itself – are
a direct result of the tireless support of these
volunteers. Third, I thank the staff for their
commitment to innovation and excellent
customer service. Our staff members strive to
exceed patron expectations by offering the best
in programming and services without exception.
Finally, and most importantly, we are grateful
to members of the Durham community who
visit the library in person and online, who value
and care for the resources the library makes
available, and whose tax dollars and donations
support their library. We are a great library
because a great community makes that happen.
It is my goal to continue making this exceptional
library even better, and for that I need your help.
After you read this report, I encourage you to
share your thoughts on what we’re doing well
and what would you like to see us do better.
Contact us online, in person or by phone.
I welcome and value your feedback.

learning
From the youngest patrons, eyes wide open and mouths agape at the wonders of a storytime – to the seasoned and savvy customer, brow
furrowed in concentration at a computer monitor – the library inspires and sustains a life-long love of learning.
Science in the Summer
Funded by GlaxoSmithKline and Durham
Library Foundation, and administered by the
Morehead Planetarium, these weeklong summer
camps for elementary and middle schoolers fill
up each year. Registration is held in early spring.
Storytimes
At any given time that the library is open, there
is likely to be a storytime in progress – infants to
preschoolers, in English, German, Spanish and
more. Storytimes build early literacy skills and
reinforce a love of learning.
Computer Classes
Internet basics, Microsoft Office and online
job hunting and resume courses are offered at
almost every library. Special interest classes, like
video editing and graphic design, cater to more
advanced users.
Proctoring
Read and Feed
When school is out, some children are at risk for
missing important meals. Lunch is served with
a helping of early literacy skill building each
summer at the Main Library.
6
 Summer Reading
The library’s most popular program, Summer
Reading reaches thousands of children each
summer, encouraging them to read and helping
them retain what they learned in the previous
year. Children, teens and adults participate in
Summer Reading themed programs and events,
and prizes are available as incentives to reach
those reading goals.
Exam proctoring is available by appointment at
every library location.
Online Resources
From car repair, to homework help, to learning
a new language and more, online research and
reference is available 24/7 with a Durham
County Library card. Still need help? Live chat
is available round the clock from a network of
North Carolina libraries.
understanding
With programs and resources that illuminate the past and present, the library builds conduits to histories, cultures and communities,
facilitating an understanding of others, ourselves and the world around us.

imagination
The library is a place of possibilities. Minds are opened and new ideas presented in words,
music, art and drama find fertile ground. Young and old are inspired to create, participate
and attempt something new.
Puppets in Motion
This puppet troupe is made up of staff members
from multiple library locations. They perform
at each facility, to the delight of the library’s
youngest patrons.
Writing Groups
Budding authors can discuss ideas and get
critiques at writing groups offered at many of
the regional libraries.
 Local Performers
Actors perform new interpretations of fairy
tale favorites, dancers lead children and adults
to join in, and musicians fill the libraries with
joyful sounds. Durham’s rich palettes of talented
performers weave their magic at the library during
Summer Reading and throughout the year.
Book Clubs
Mystery to women authors, over 40 to culinary
arts, there are book clubs offered throughout the
system to pique any interest.
Videogaming
This stealthy way to build cooperation skills and
teamwork is also proven to entice teens to try other library services.

parents and friends to enjoy.
FY 2012 HIGHLIGHTS
Every day, Durham County Library offers
an impressive collection and a wide array
of ongoing services and programs. But each
year brings special occasions, significant
new offerings in the collection, advances in
technology and the realization of innovative
ideas that help the library reach the ‘margin of
excellence.’ Fiscal Year 2012 was no exception.
What follows are some of the most noteworthy
milestones, events and achievements of FY
2012.
 Bragtown 50th Anniversary Celebration
Bragtown Library Family Literacy Center hosted
an open house in March 2012 celebrating its 50th
anniversary. County Commissioners, former staff
and members of the community participated in a
full day of programs for children, teens and adults.
Earlier in the month, County Commissioners
approved a resolution congratulating Bragtown
on turning one half century old.
In 1962, Bragtown Branch Library opened
its doors. The land beneath the library had
been purchased and deeded to the Durham
Colored Library a year earlier. In April of 1966,
the Durham Colored Library merged with
the Durham City-County Public Library, and
Bragtown became part of the new Durham
County Library system.
Today, Bragtown Library continues to serve
its community with storytimes in English,
Spanish and French for children and toddlers,
tutoring for school-aged children, and neighborto-neighbor programs that engage adults and
seniors. In FY 2012, Bragtown Library had
more than 12,000 visits; it hosted 243 programs,
which were attended by approximately 4,000
children, teens and adults; and it provided
access to technology as visitors logged 5,300
computer sessions. All of this in a 1,000 sq. ft.
facility, open 20 hours a week.
Lunch with the Director
Library Director Tammy Baggett began meeting
regularly with members of the public with the
introduction of the quarterly program, Lunch
with the Director. The library hosted four
lunches for up to five members of the public
each, and participants were invited to bring
their questions, comments and ideas about
the library. Each lunch was held at a different
location, so that participants were able to select
their preferred library as they signed up to
meet the Director up to a year in advance. This
successful event gave members of the Durham
community a chance to meet the Director oneon-one, and garnered lots of good ideas and
many, many kudos for the library.
Ebooks
In FY 2012, the long wait for ebooks at the
library was finally over. Thanks in part to the
generous funding of the Friends of the Durham
Library, patrons began enjoying the latest
bestsellers in ebook format.
Friends funding was used for the opening
day collection of approximately 700 items.
Additional titles were purchased throughout
the rest of the fiscal year with funds from the
library’s operating budget. The initial collection
was made up of high demand titles in Adult
Fiction, Adult Nonfiction and Juvenile and
Young Adult collections.
9
FY 2012 HIGHLIGHTS
 Love My Library Video Contest
The library hosted its first ever ‘Love My
Library’ Video Contest in September and
October, inviting members of the public to
show just how much they love their library by
singing, dancing, rapping, acting, cheering or
animating it on film. Videos were no more than
three minutes in length and were submitted in
one of four categories: Children, Teens, Adults
and Professional, for marketing firms and
professional videographers.
 Bull City Soul Revival
Funded by a grant of nearly $10,000 to Durham
Library Foundation from the North Carolina
Humanities Council, the library hosted Bull
City Soul Revival, an exploration of the rich
history of the soul and R&B music tradition in
Durham. This four-part series of educational,
interactive events was held throughout the
month of April and showcased Durham’s
African-American musicians from the 1960s
and 1970s. The series included lectures and a
finale concert featuring musicians of today and
yesterday. A highlight of the event was the well
received Bull City Soul Revival exhibit, Soul
Souvenirs, which ran through the end of May at
the Hayti Heritage Center. Viewed by hundreds
of soul music fans, the exhibition included
posters, albums, ticket stubs and other
memorabilia from the golden age of
soul, funk and R&B in Durham.
A group of daycare children at Bragtown won
the Children’s category. Teens from Stanford
L. Warren took their category. The Adult
category was won by the Over 50 Crowd at
East Regional, and a spooky video by Growler
Visual Media / Mindworks Multimedia won
the Professional category.
Love My Library Video contest was sponsored
by the Friends of the Durham Library.
FY 2012 HIGHLIGHTS
Naming Celebrations and a Gift of Art
The library dedicated rooms to three generous
patrons in FY 2012. The South Regional Library
periodicals room will now be known as the
Anton and Valerie Schindler Room, after a
naming ceremony held in April. The Schindlers
were researchers who worked at Research
Triangle Park, and who valued the learning and
space for contemplation and creativity embodied
by the library. Dr. Schindler bequeathed more
than $118,000 to Durham Library Foundation to
support the library in its mission.
The Southwest Regional children’s programming
room was renamed the Frances Brinkley
Children’s Programming Room in honor of
the teacher who left a legacy gift of more than
$70,000 to the Foundation. It was Brinkley’s firm
belief that education and a love of reading were
the hope for the future of her students.
The community meeting room
at North Regional Library
was named for Dorothy
Gier in May. Ms. Gier
donated her home to
the Foundation. It
ultimately sold for
more than $200,000.
Ms. Gier had taught
and worked all
over the world. She
used investment
resources available
at North Regional to
build her estate.
Finally, a triptych
created and donated by artist Marjorie
Pierson was unveiled in June at Southwest
Regional Library. Pierson is a visual artist and
environmental photographer who specializes
in documenting endangered wetlands in the
American South. The artwork is valued at more
than $5,400.
 Peeps
The second annual Durham County Library
Peeps Show was bigger and better than ever.
Staff members throughout the system created
13 dioramas featuring Peeps, the marshmallow,
spring candy bunnies and chicks as a way to
highlight library services and collections. The
only rule was that the displays had to relate to
library resources or events in some way.
All 13 dioramas were displayed at the Main
Library for two days, and more than 200 peep
fans visited in person to vote on their
favorite. More than 550 votes
were cast by liking peep-o-rama
photos on Facebook. Public
participation in the event
more than doubled from
the previous year.
First, second and
third place went
to East Regional
Teens, Marketing
and Development
(pictured), and
Main Adult Services,
respectively.
 Harry and the Potters
In celebration of the release of the final film
in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and
the Deathly Hallows Part 2, the library once
again hosted world renowned Wizard Rock
band Harry and the Potters as they brought
their Ride the Lightning 2011 tour to Durham
in July. Brothers Paul and Joe DeGeorge
performed rock songs about the Harry Potter
universe at a free, all-ages show at the Casbah.
More than 400 people attended the packed
event, which was sponsored by Durham
Library Foundation.
FY 2012 HIGHLIGHTS
 Is the Library Open?
Members of the Durham County Library Board
of Trustees’ Advocacy Committee put their
technological expertise to work and created a
website that answers the most pressing question
of library fans throughout the county: Is the
library open?
Isthelibraryopen.com, launched in May, allows
users to select their favorite Durham County
Library location from a drop-down menu. Once
a location is chosen, the site displays in large
letters, “Yes” or “No.” If the library is open, the
site tells customers how long it will remain open
that day. If the library is closed, the site displays
when it will reopen. There is also a map for each
location selected and a listing of the library
hours for the current week.
The website works well for regular hours and
scheduled holiday closings, but it is also used for
unscheduled closures due to inclement weather or
power outages. The site can be accessed from any
type of browser and displays well on smartphones,
but because it is web based, it doesn’t require
a special app. The website was created as open
source software in the spirit of sharing information,
which is a primary mission of the library.
 Comics Fest
The library hosted its second annual Comics
Fest at Southwest Regional in May. This popular
two-day event featured award-winning guest
authors, book signings, drawing workshops,
activities, giveaways and prizes. Comics Fest
celebrates comics and graphic novels, and
encourages children, teens and adults to not
just enjoy the genre, but to try their hands at
creating their own comics. Comics Fest was
funded by the Friends of the Durham Library.
Comics Fest Guest Willow Dawson gives
advice to an aspiring cartoonist.
Science Madness
With a $25,000 grant from the North Carolina
GlaxoSmithKline Foundation to Durham
Library Foundation, the library launched
Science Madness: free science programs
for children ages 3 to 14. Library Youth
Partners, high school students trained to
deliver storytimes and activities to pre‐K and
elementary school children, also took the
program into the schools and community
centers of Durham.
Science Madness, hands‐on science activities
at the library, encouraged children to have fun
while exploring nature, numbers, chemistry
and physics, and boosting their reading and
writing skills. One highlight of the program
was the Science of Hovercraft series, where
children built their own hovercraft with CDs
and balloons and rode in an individual‐sized
hovercraft to experience near frictionless
motion.

Durham Library Foundation was founded as
a 501(c)3 in 2000, to develop and encourage
the long-term financial health and growth
of Durham County Library through giving,
endowment and capital contributions. As a
private, nonprofit organization, the Foundation
solicits, receives and administers private
gifts from many sources, including those not
available to a government-funded library.
The Foundation manages holdings of more than
$3.2 million, funded by significant gifts from
the National Endowment for the Humanities,
GlaxoSmithKline, the Friends of the Durham
Library, past and present members of the
Foundation Board of Directors, local and
national companies and nonprofit organizations,
and generous individual donors who support
the mission of the library.
Durham Library Foundation has developed
independent and prudent investment strategies
to maximize each gift’s long-term benefit to the
library. Gifts are used to fund enhancements
and improvements that the library could not
otherwise afford through its annual operating
budget. The Foundation refers to these
enhancements as “the margin of excellence.”
Signature Foundation-Funded Initiatives:
Library Youth Partners
Funded by a grant from GlaxoSmithKline,
the Library Youth Partnership builds public
speaking and mentoring skills in teens, by
teaching them to develop and present literaturebased math, science, art and other programs to
preschool and elementary aged children.
 Summer Reading
Durham Library Foundation is a partner in
funding this most popular library program
that engages children in reading throughout
the summer to help them retain what they’ve
learned each school year.
Humanities Society
Participation in this frequent attendee program
more than doubled in Fiscal Year 2012. Patrons
sign up for free, and are rewarded for attending
humanities programs with special invitation-only
events. Popular destinations this year included
a backstage tour of Durham Performing Arts
Center, a holiday celebration at Hill House and a
private tour of Sarah P. Duke Gardens.
Humanities Programming
In the Wings
With a $2 million endowment, the Foundation
funds award-winning programs on arts and culture
for the library. The humanities program attracts
local and national authors to the library and taps the
wealth of scholars from local universities, bringing
their expertise to public audiences. Through the
humanities program, the library explores local
history and creates partnerships with businesses
and organizations throughout the community.
This series took patrons behind the scenes
with PlayMakers actors and crew to hear about
upcoming productions.
Art with the Experts
Nasher Museum experts explored the museum’s
exhibits in an interactive format.
Humanities Programs of Note
Blue V. Durham
Before Brown V. Board of Education, there was
Blue V. Durham, the first lawsuit for school
funding equalization. Local history expert Eddie
Davis led a discussion on the 60th anniversary
of the case.
 Dar He
Well-known actor Mike Wiley brought the story of
Emmett Till to life in this one-man show.
 Banned Books Onstage
A perennial favorite, actors from the Little
Green Pig Theatrical Concern performed scenes
from banned or challenged books.
Foodie Series
Bread, cheese, beer... What’s next? The library
explored local cuisine in one of the humanities
program’s most popular series.
Furniture for the Children’s Area
The Children’s Unit in the Main Library got
a long-overdue makeover with new furniture
funded by the Foundation. Little ones and their
parents were grateful.
Civil Rights Banners
Created by the Durham Civil Rights Heritage
Project, six custom banners explore the history
of the Civil Rights Movement in Durham. The
Foundation funded the ongoing touring of the
banners, including their first ever display in
Research Triangle Park in GlaxoSmithKline
Headquarters.
Books on Broadway
In a partnership with Durham Performing Arts
Center, students earned tickets to Broadway
shows by writing or drawing.

The all-volunteer Friends of the Durham Library
was founded in 1968. The organization donates
funds raised from memberships and book sales
to advance library services, enhance existing
collections, provide cutting-edge technology
and to support important library programs. The
Friends raise money through book sales held
twice each year and through year-round satellite
book sales at the Main Library, all regional and
branch libraries, and the American Tobacco
Campus in the Strickland Building. The book
sales generate more than $70,000 each year.
The Friends have been recognized locally and at
the state level for their work in support of the
library. In 2009, book sale co-chair, Jane
Goodridge, was named Volunteer of the Year by
the Friends of North Carolina Public Libraries.
The winning nomination included testimonials
from the 20-plus book sorters who work with Jane
every week of the year preparing for the book sales.
Then, in 2011, the Friends book sorters themselves
received the Volunteer of the Year Award from the
Volunteer Center of Durham. Nominated by Ann
Wilder, president of the Friends in FY 2012, the
sorters were chosen over 12 other outstanding
Durham volunteer groups.
Signature Friends-funded initiatives:
Staff Proposals and Scholarships
The Friends have made funding library staff
initiatives a high priority. Twice a year, the
Friends solicit proposals from staff at all levels
of the library. The proposals are vetted by the
Friends Board, and the best are selected for
funding. The highlights below are some of the
proposals chosen during the 2012 fiscal year.
In addition, the Friends encourage professional
development by funding $2500 scholarships
for staff members who want to further their
education in library-related fields.
Best of Friends and Season’s Readings
Each year, the library produces Best of Friends,
a quarterly newsletter that keeps donors and
patrons alike up to date on events and programs.
The newsletter has gone from a black and white
sheet to a full-color eight-page publication.
But the most popular library publication by far
is the annual collection of reader’s picks from
staff and volunteers: Season’s Readings. This
anxiously awaited book is released during the
holidays, and has grown to more than 100 pages.
The Friends fund the printing and mailing of
both Best of Friends and Season’s Readings. Both
publications are available online as well.
Summer Reading
The Friends of the Durham Library is the third
major partner in funding Summer Reading.
Friends support pays for RIF books, performers
and prizes for the children.
FY 2012 Highlights
 Booker the Fox
The library’s mascot was in sore need of a trip to
the groomer. With matted fur and an unventilated
suit, it was time for Booker to get an upgrade. The
Friends purchased a new, ventilated costume for
Booker that put a happier face on the mascot and
on his human helper.
Ebook Debut Collection
In the fall of 2011, patrons began enjoying the
latest bestsellers in ebook format, thanks to
a $15,000 grant from the Friends. The funds
allowed the library to purchase 700 titles for the
opening of its ebook collection. Additional titles
were purchased throughout the fiscal year from
the library’s operating budget.
AV Shelving at North Regional
Existing shelving at North Regional was too
low and caused patrons to stoop, kneel, sit or
even attempt to lie on the floor when browsing
audio materials. The shelves also did a poor job
of securing the compact disc cases sufficiently,
which caused them to become disorderly after
a single browsing. New shelving funded by the
Friends keeps the collection neat and within
reach.
 Teen & Adult Computer Labs at Main
FY 2012 was a year of technology for the
Friends. The computer lab at the Main Library
was renovated, and new smart board equipment
was installed. In addition, the Friends funded a
new bank of computers for the teens, creating
the first dedicated space for teens to access
technology at the Main Library. The effect was
immediate. The teen area came to life and is a
hub of activity every afternoon.
Laptop Lab
The Friends help the library stay on the cutting
edge of technology. From funding for the initial
DVD collection to the new ebook collection,
the Friends made it possible for the library
to adopt new formats and stay current in its
digital offerings. In this same vein, the Friends
provided funding for a roving laptop lab that
allowed many library facilities to offer training
on popular computer programs. The initiative
proved so popular that the Friends funded a
second lab in FY 2012, expanding the program
to all library facilities.
Carolina Theatre VHS/DVD Replacement
In August 2001, the Friends purchased the
Carolina Theatre Video Collection for the
library when the theatre closed the doors of
its rental operations. This was a great addition
to the library’s video collection, as it included
unique foreign, independent and art films.
However, 11 years on, the VHS tapes were
wearing out. Another donation from the Friends
helped the library purchase DVDs to replace as
many of the VHS tapes as possible, preserving
the collection for many years to come.
