THE HERO OF THE STORY the book of acts revisited 67TH ANNUAL BIBLE LECTUREs MAY 4-7, 2010 MALIBU, CALIFORNIA THE HERO OF THE STORY The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else. From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us. ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ ACTS 17:24-28 The New International Version Message from the President Stories can be more than informative—they can become formative and even transformative. They can mold our minds and hearts from the time we are able to understand them. And the principal characters, the heroes of the stories, often become our mentors and our role models. The Pepperdine University Bible Lectures for 2010 will take a fresh look at the Book of Acts, the stirring story of those early Christians who turned the world upside down. But this time, we will discover the true Hero of the Story: the One who commissioned and empowered, who redeemed and gave gifts, and who ultimately accomplished the impossible through people who were not so different from ourselves. Christian authors have correctly and wisely advised us, “It’s not about you.” That has never been truer than here in the unparalleled saga told in Acts. Although memorable people played important roles, the story always was and always will be about God. It is His story, after all. And as the “Acts of God’s People” continue even today, it is His continuing tale of power and redemption. It’s for us to gratefully accept and marvel at our role in the contemporary drama that God is directing and unfolding. We welcome you to the Bible Lectures and to Pepperdine University. This year you are in for many surprises. For one, if you attended the Bible Lectures last year, you were inconvenienced by the construction clutter and activity—but this year the campus focal point is finished and is sparkling new! It has earned a new name, the Sharon and Terry Mullin Town Square. The Joslyn Plaza you may remember is barely recognizable. It has been transformed into a gathering place that is more beautiful and gracious than ever before. This year’s Bible Lectures will clearly be the most extensive, the most international, the most diverse, and the most exciting we have ever hosted, thanks to Jerry Rushford, his team and the hundreds of excellent speakers, teachers, and presenters that will flood our campus. Our prayer is that the major renovation of the center of our campus will be matched by the renovation of our hearts, with renewed faith, worship, and work. As you discover the new beauty of Joslyn Plaza on the Malibu campus, may you also discover the eternal greatness and power of the exalted Hero of the Book of Acts—the God of the ages, the Savior of our souls. Andrew K. Benton President As a Christian University, Pepperdine Affirms That God is That God is revealed uniquely in Christ That the educational process may not, with impunity, be divorced from the divine process That the student, as a person of infinite dignity, is the heart of the educational enterprise That the quality of student life is a valid concern of the University That truth, having nothing to fear from investigation, should be pursued relentlessly in every discipline That spiritual commitment, tolerating no excuse for mediocrity, demands the highest standards of academic excellence That freedom, whether spiritual, intellectual, or economic, is indivisible That knowledge calls, ultimately, for a life of service Message from the Lectures Team This year at the Pepperdine Bible Lectures, we will revisit the birth of the Christian age, with all its dynamism, excitement, and power! It is time to recapture that spirit of newness and adventure, of simple trust in the marvelous presence of God at work in His world—and to acknowledge the real Hero of the Story. Our planned program is extensive: 282 classes and 330 program participants, who are coming from 44 states in the USA, and from 22 other nations. This year, there is more diversity among participants. This stirs us to look forward with great anticipation toward something that is reminiscent, in some way, of the Day of Pentecost in Acts chapter two! We are excited about the new town square, the beautiful Joslyn Plaza, which will now host us with warmth and graciousness. And the thought-provoking theme that focuses on our great God has inspired our Lectures Team to work more diligently than ever. Meanwhile, the presenters are preparing with dedication, and everything is moving toward a mighty moment in May. Two things are now needed. The first is prayer. We ask you to pray for this assembly of Christians—that those who speak, teach, and lead in various ways will prepare in God’s power, not merely in their own ability. Pray fervently that God will be glorified as He was on the Day of Pentecost long ago, and that thousands of Christians will be inspired and empowered through these days of spiritual refreshment. Pray for yourself and your loved ones, that all of you will find newness of life through the spirit of this assembly. Above all, invite God to come among us at these moments in May. The second thing needed is for you to make unchangeable plans to be present at as many sessions as possible—and to encourage your loved ones to be there beside you. It will be a time of renewed commitment and praise to the Lord. And there will be precious opportunities to rekindle friendships with kingdom people. These are the experiences that transcend earth and time. What will make these the greatest Pepperdine Bible Lectures ever? The answer is, for all of us to wait in prayerful expectation for God to come among us, to inspire us and to work in us as He has through all ages. Beyond doubt, our world and our fellowship need another “Acts 2”—more specifically, we need the great God of Acts. As we have said before, one of the things most loved by regular attendees is the heartwarming fellowship of kingdom people. Everywhere across the campus, from morning till late evening, there will be embraces, laughter, tears, conversations, and prayers. It is the sweetest of reunions, the grandest of communions. Welcome to the Pepperdine Bible Lectures! May the Hero of the Story, the Lord of Pentecost, richly bless you. The Lectures Team Rick Gibson, Tami Williamson, Joella Michael, and Jerry Rushford “This year at the Pepperdine Bible Lectures, we will revisit the birth of the Christian age, with all its dynamism, excitement and power! Rhonda Appleby and Randy Lowry met at Pepperdine when the Malibu campus opened in the Fall of 1972. Randy, a transfer student from the L.A. campus, was the first student body president at Malibu. Following their graduations, they were married in Stauffer Chapel on June 7, 1975, with Carl Mitchell performing the ceremony. Randy earned degrees in political science and social science, and a master’s in public administration from Pepperdine, and then completed his jurist doctor degree from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota. After six years at Willamette University in Oregon, the Lowrys returned to Pepperdine in 1986. Randy joined the law school faculty and became the founder of the nationally-recognized Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution. During these same years he also taught for Vermont Law School; Hamline University; City University of Hong Kong; Shantou University in Beijing, China; Bond University in Gold Coast, Australia; and the University of Modena in Italy. In the midst of this busy 19-year chapter at Pepperdine, the Lowry family was actively involved in the Conejo Valley Church of Christ where Randy served as an elder for many years. Rhonda’s heart had been drawn to personal ministry, and in 1991 she decided to enroll at Fuller Theological Seminary. After earning the Master of Divinity degree she became a widely sought-after speaker and taught for Fuller, Pepperdine, and now Lipscomb. With a focus on spiritual formation she is a frequent speaker at Laity Lodge in Texas, has spoken at the North American Christian Convention, and has taught classes at the Pepperdine Bible Lectures for more than 20 years. She was awarded the 2004 Wineskins Award for Christian service. She served on the Rochester College board, and is serving on the boards of Missions Resource Network, Heartbeat, Alive Hospice, and ALS of Tennessee. On September 26, 2005, Randy Lowry became the 17th president of Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee. During his tenure the University granted their first earned doctorate degree, a new College of Pharmacy has been established, sixteen new graduate programs have been developed, and four new institutes have been founded. The latest addition is the Institute for Christian Spirituality. In May 2007, Lowry was selected as one of Nashville’s top 50 Business and Community Leaders for the Future by Celebrate Nashville, the official publication for Nashville’s 200 year anniversary. The Lowrys have three children and two grandchildren and a foster son. John earned a law degree from SMU and is assistant dean of the College of Business at Lipscomb. He and his wife, Melissa, have two children. Janet completed a Ph.D. at UCSB and teaches for High Point University in North Carolina, where her husband, Richmond, is a student at Wake Forest Law School. Melinda is a graduate of Wheaton College and will be married this summer to Kent Raymond. Mark, their foster son, earned an MBA from USC and works in real estate development. Randy and Rhonda Lowry will celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary on June 7, 2010. 16 6:15 p.m. Song Leaders: Place: 7:00 p.m. Title: Speaker: Song Leaders: Place: 9:00 p.m. Title: Singers: Director: Place: Title: Singers: Place: Title: Teacher: Singers: Director: Place: Title: Teachers: Place: Title: Teacher: Place: Title: Teachers: Place: Title: Moderator: Panelists: Place: Songfest Ken Young & Hallal, Franklin, Tennessee Firestone Fieldhouse Main Lecture The Song of Revolution (Acts 4:23-31) Jonathan Storment, Fort Worth, Texas Ken Young & Hallal, Franklin, Tennessee Firestone Fieldhouse Late Evening Programs Inside Out (An Experience in Worship) The ZOE Group, Nashville, Tennessee Peter Wilson, Escondido, California Smothers Theatre “Sing to the Lord a New Song” (A Time for Praise and Worship) Littleton Praise Team, Littleton, Colorado Elkins Auditorium Ignite—A Passion for Worship & Word (Part Two: Making Room—Creating Space for the Spirit to Work in Our Lives) Charlton Taylor, Midland, Texas Golf Course Road Worship Team, Midland, Texas Kent Rogers, Midland, Texas Stauffer Chapel Balancing Brokenness (Part Two: Becoming a Church Full of “Broken Believers”) Chris Goldman, Seattle, Washington William Lawrence, Seattle, Washington Raitt Recital Hall Men & Women Communicate Differently! Mike O’Neal attended Oklahoma Christian University from 1964 to 1966 before completing his degree in accounting and business at Harding University in 1968. While serving as a Navy officer, he passed the CPA examination with the 17th highest score nationwide and received the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service during an 18-month tour of duty in Vietnam. He earned his juris doctorate from Stanford University in 1974, and returned to Harding to serve on the faculty from 1974 to 1976. For the first eight years of her life, Nancy Lavender lived in Italy where her parents were Christian missionaries. The family moved to Ohio, but from age 13 to 20 Nancy returned to Italy each summer to work in the “Project Italy” mission program established by her parents. She graduated from Harding in 1975. Mike and Nancy met on the Harding campus, and they were married on December 21, 1974, at the Church of Christ in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. When the O’Neals moved to Pepperdine University in 1976, it was the beginning of an exciting 26-year chapter in their lives that only ended when Mike became president of Oklahoma Christian University in 2002. In the Pepperdine years, Mike served as general counsel and vice president for finance and administration and was named vice chancellor in 1991. The O’Neals were active in teaching Bible classes at the University Church of Christ, and they really enjoyed “adopting” new Pepperdine students every year. Mike served as a deacon and an elder with the University Church of Christ for many years. In the eight years the O’Neals have served at OC, enrollment has increased significantly and the endowment has more than doubled. Mike and Nancy have been very active in initiating and promoting programs to assist the people of Rwanda, Africa, as they recover from the genocide that killed more than 1 million Rwandans 16 years ago. The president of Rwanda visited the OC campus in 2006, and returns in April 2010 to speak at the graduation of the first 10 of 58 outstanding Rwandan students attending OC. Mike and Nancy have two children, Michael and Amanda, and all of the O’Neals are members of the Memorial Road Church of Christ adjacent to the OC campus. Michael completed his bachelor’s degree at OC and earned a law degree from Pepperdine, and he works for a law firm in Oklahoma City. During his OC years he met and married Becky Graham, who is a faculty member in the School of Nursing at OC. They have a son, Will, who will be 4 in March 2010, and Will is looking forward to becoming a big brother in June 2010. Mandy attended Lubbock Christian University and completed her bachelor’s degree and MBA degree from OC. She works for Sandridge Energy Company in Oklahoma City and is active in the singles ministry at Memorial Road Church. Mike and Nancy celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary on December 21, 2009. 34 6:15 p.m. Song Leaders: Place: 7:00 p.m. Title: Speaker: Song Leaders: Place: 9:00 p.m. Title: Singers: Director: Place: Title: Singers: Place: Title: Singers: Place: Title: Teacher: Place: Songfest Ken Young & Hallal, Franklin, Tennessee Firestone Fieldhouse Main Lecture “They Prayed for Daylight” (Acts 27-28) David Fleer, Nashville, Tennessee Ken Young & Hallal, Franklin, Tennessee Firestone Fieldhouse Late Evening Programs Rediscover a Sense of Wonder (A Contemporary Worship Experience) Psallo, Los Angeles, California Mark Campbell, Los Angeles, California Smothers Theatre “Free to Lift Our Voices” (A Closing Night Concert) True Lift, Pepperdine University Elkins Auditorium “Come Into His Presence With Singing” (Rejoice and Be Glad) Sweet Harmony, Denver, Colorado Stauffer Chapel “Time in a Bottle” (A Storyteller Reveals the Truth in Parables) John William Smith, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma Lindhurst Theatre P r o g r a m Pa r t i c i pa n t s Behailu Abebe Jimmy Adcox Dick Ady Karen Alexander Amos Allen Leonard Allen Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Africa Jonesboro, Arkansas Gresham, Oregon Austin, Texas Farmington, Kentucky Siloam Springs, Arkansas Tomás Allen Craig Altrock Chris Altrock Lynn Anderson Faustina Asare Fred Boadu Asare La Verne, California Fort Worth, Texas Memphis, Tennessee San Antonio, Texas Fetteh, Ghana, Africa Fetteh, Ghana, Africa Rick Atchley Steve Austin Jim Baird Dennis Baker William Baker Bill Banowsky Fort Worth, Texas Abilene, Texas Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Tacoma, Washington Cincinnati, Ohio Dallas, Texas Barbara Barnes Maryan Baskin Otis Baskin Bruce Bates Janet Bates Laurie Bates Vancouver, Washington Malibu, California Malibu, California Cumberland, Rhode Island Cumberland, Rhode Island Fredericksburg, Virginia Junhui Bian Zechariah Manyok Biar Pat Bills Brenda Bolanis Gary Bortz Sheila Bost Guangdong, China Bor, South Sudan, Africa Dallas, Texas Whittier, California Campbell, California Santa Monica, California 35 P r o g r a m Pa r t i c i pa n t s 36 Ben Brewster Ann Brumley Brady Bryce Becky Burroughs Barbara Byrd Melvin Byrd Bossier City, Louisiana Stillwater, Oklahoma Abilene, Texas Rowlett, Texas Port Orchard, Washington Port Orchard, Washington Ruth Byrne Steve Byrne Charlotte Cage Gary Cage Darin Campbell Duncan Campbell Honolulu, Hawaii Honolulu, Hawaii Reno, Nevada Reno, Nevada Austin, Texas Memphis, Tennessee Mark Campbell Sherah Campbell Matt Carter Jeff Cary Judy Casey Alberto Castañeda Los Angeles, California Memphis, Tennessee Chapel Hill, North Carolina Lubbock, Texas Malibu, California Pereira, Colombia, South America Konstantin Chernushenko Randy Chesnutt Chris Chetsanga Winston Chong Holly Christensen Scott Christensen Brentwood, Tennessee Malibu, California Harare, Zimbabwe, Africa Singapore, Malaysia Puyallup, Washington Puyallup, Washington Jennifer Hale Christy Bob Clark Lourene Clark David Clayton Sydney Clayton Tony Coffey Newbury Park, California Jackson, Tennessee Jackson, Tennessee Nashville, Tennessee Nashville, Tennessee Dublin, Ireland P r o g r a m Pa r t i c i pa n t s Mike Cope Wes Crawford Ellen Crigler Willard Crigler Chris Crooks Gayle Crowe Abilene, Texas Lubbock, Texas Pacoima, California Pacoima, California Great Falls, Montana Cane Ridge, Tennessee Lisa Crowe Ken Cukrowski Tim Curtis Gordon Dabbs Jason Darden Mary Darden Cane Ridge, Tennessee Abilene, Texas Georgetown, Texas Dallas, Texas Sacramento, California Sacramento, California Dyron Daughrity Sunde Daughrity Steve Davis Kindy Pfremmer DeLong Steve Diggs Chris Doran Malibu, California Malibu, California Malibu, California Newbury Park, California Antioch, Tennessee Calabasas, California Terry Drake Spencer Dunlap Ken Durham Steve Eckman Igor Egirev Chi Ekwenye Duncanville, Texas Kansas City, Missouri Nashville, Tennessee York, Nebraska St. Petersburg, Russia Obuzor, Nigeria, Africa O. Throughout the years of the 1940s, this significant annual forum grew in popularity, but the early 1950s saw a decline in attendance, and no program was scheduled in 1957. The Bible Lectures took on new life with the arrival of M. Norvel Young and J. P. Sanders in the fall of that year. By 1961, the keynote lecture program had to be moved to the Shrine Auditorium to accommodate the large numbers of people who wanted to attend. In the following years, the huge Los Angeles Sports Arena became the scene for the largest evening lectures. The University added a special program of summer Bible Lectures for 10 years beginning in 1958. However, the programs were again declining in attendance by the late 1960s and the summer lectures ended in 1967. When Pepperdine moved to its new campus in Malibu in 1972, there was a renewal of interest in the Bible Lectures. Since that time, the lectures have grown in interest and attendance every year. As the University moves forward into the future, it is fully committed to pursuing the very highest academic standards within a context which celebrates and extends the spiritual and ethical ideals of the Christian faith. The Department of Church Relations is convinced that many years from now, when Pepperdine University celebrates a century of Bible Lectures, this annual series will continue to be a stimulating forum for the renewal and restoration of New Testament Christianity. The traditional joining of hands during the singing of “The Lord Bless You and Keep You” was a memorable conclusion for those in attendance in 2009. 52 THE HERO OF THE STORY The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ ACTS 17:24-28 The New International Version Nonprofit Org.
