Workshop to address parental care In the past year our youth have shared their faith with other Tulsans at The Great Unknown, with those of other beliefs at Teen Trialogues, and even with those in other countries during the mission trip. Now they’re eager to share with their own faith family - especially the “stockholders” who invested in their faith development this year. They invite everyone to come to Community Hall this Sunday at 6:00 to enjoy a Gospel Cafe - where the special is always the Peace of God! You will be greeted by gracious hospitality and served delicious homemade hot chocolate and fresh-baked cookies to begin an uplifting evening. Their goal is to overwhelm church members with the love of God and Christian hospitality. Worshipers will sit at tables, and each will Planning long term care for aging parents can be a daunting task. Children are often faced with these decisions when parents are least able to make decisions for themselves. Our church is offering a series of workshops to help children of aging parents learn to observe, communicate, and develop skills and resources needed to make informed decisions on long term care. Planning for our Parents will meet on Wednesdays, February 9th through March 2nd, at 5:30 p.m. in the Asbury Room. B.A. member Dr. Mike Hopkins will teach observation skills, effective communication with aging parents, caring for the spiritual well being of all involved, effective care planning, emergency preparedness, and many other useful resources to help children prepare, plan and provide focus for long term care. Dr. Hopkins has over thirty years experience as a professor, case manager. and consultant in health and human services with emphasis on elder care. He brings a wealth of experience and information that will benefit anyone facing issues of long term elder care. Contact Rev. Paul Staat, 699-0133 or pdstaat@msn.com, or Paula Gradney, 699-0129 or paulagradney@bostonavenue.org. have two table leaders- one mid high, one senior high. In closing, Larkin McCann will lead the benediction in Hebrew, with our youth surrounding the congregation They are baking, making extra special hot chocolate, and decorating extravagantly so our congregation may experience God’s shalom which is more than just peace. Health issues in America: an interfaith perspective Boston Avenuers are invited to join local religious and medical leaders as they discuss “Medical Dilemmas of Living and Dying in America” at the 2011 Interfaith Trialogue Series. Sponsored by OCCJ and funded in part by a Tulsa Library Trust endowment, the threepart series will meet on Sundays, Feb. 6, 13 and 20, at 2 p.m. at varying locations. Dr. Bill Crowell will moderate and the programs are free and open to the public. Session 1 - “Living vs. Dying: The Costs,” at Boston Avenue - Most health-care dollars go to patients in their last six months of life. Many want to die at home, but typically do not. The technology that sustains us at the end presents enormous ethical challenges. Are there more cost-effective, less controversial interventions? Jeff Alderman, M.D., and Kevin Donovan, M.D., OU School of Community Medicine Session 2, “Who Cares & How,” Feb. 13, Peace Academy, 4620 S. Irvington – Peace of soul might mean choosing against treatment. What happens when people stop seeing disease as a battleground? Is palliative care an acceptable response to the challenge of terminal illness? What is “terminal”? Many fear pulling the plug on those we love. Page 4A January 28, 2011 From the Pastor’s Study Mouzon Biggs, Jr. Jeremiah’s preaching and writing fill more paper in the Hebrew Scriptures than any other single author. The Book of Psalms is longer, but it includes the poetry of many different writers. Isaiah is slightly longer, but many scholars believe it is the work of three different writers. This Sunday’s lection comes from the first chapter of Jeremiah’s long work. Rabbi Gunther Plaut has written, “Israel (the ten northern tribes) and its capitol Samaria had already been destroyed. Now Judah (the two southern tribes) and its capitol Jerusalem were in mortal danger. “Jeremiah saw the problem as more spiritual than political. Jeremiah’s call to be a prophet came in 625 B.C.E. while Josiah was king of Judah. Jeremiah was about fifteen or sixteen years old.” Dr. Ronald Clements adds, “Jeremiah sensed that he could never be anything other than a prophet. Even so, he protested to God his unreadiness for such a high responsibility - probably still a teenager. “Assyrian power was waning after having destroyed the northern tribes. Some celebrated that loss of power, but Jeremiah was already focused on the rising power of Babylon.” My sermon will be, “DO YOU KNOW ME? I’VE KNOW YOU LONGER!” Meet our newest members Megan Bryant and Alex Roby joined last Sunday. They are engaged to be married. Megan is completing a degree in dietetics at Oklahoma State University and Alex is a senior in the OSU Medical School. He has a 10-year-old daughter, Taylor. Kiran Pace joined recently. She is participating in the nursing program at Tulsa Community College and is also a part-time instructor at T.C.C. Knippa Lecture ... (continued) female and first convert to head the Islamic Society. She earned her Ph.D. in Islamic studies at the University of Chicago in 1999, and is now Director of Islamic Chaplaincy and Professor at the Macdonald Center for Islamic Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations at Hartford Seminary in Hartford, Connecticut, the first Islamic chaplaincy program in the United States. The series was endowed to honor the Rev. Dr. Clarence Knippa, former pastor of Grace Lutheran Church, on the 50th Anniversary of his ordination. Its purpose is to foster and promote understanding, respect and appreciation for the religion and ethical traditions and concerns of others. Mark your calendar! The Rev. Dr. Robert Long is coming to Boston Avenue to present the 2011 Barton Clinton Gordey Series, and you won’t want to miss him! The series will begin Sunday morning, February 20, then continue Sunday, Monday and Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. A reception will follow each evening presentation and child care is available.
