They’re eager to share this Sunday!
Workshop to address parental care
In the past
year our youth
have shared their
faith with other
Tulsans at The
Great Unknown,
with those of other
beliefs at Teen
Trialogues, and
even with those in
other countries
during the mission
trip. Now they’re
eager to share
with their own
faith family - especially
the
“stockholders”
who invested in
their faith development this year.
They invite everyone to come to Community Hall this Sunday at 6:00 to enjoy a Gospel
Cafe - where the special is always the Peace
of God! You will be greeted by gracious hospitality and served delicious homemade hot chocolate and fresh-baked cookies to begin an uplifting evening. Their goal is to overwhelm church
members with the love of God and Christian hospitality.
Worshipers will sit at tables, and each will
Planning long term care for aging parents can be a daunting task.
Children are often faced with these decisions when parents are least
able to make decisions for themselves. Our church is offering a
series of workshops to help children of aging parents learn to observe,
communicate, and develop skills and resources needed to make
informed decisions on long term care.
Planning for our Parents will meet on Wednesdays, February 9th
through March 2nd, at 5:30 p.m. in the Asbury Room.
B.A. member Dr. Mike Hopkins will teach observation skills,
effective communication with aging parents, caring for the spiritual
well being of all involved, effective care planning, emergency preparedness, and many other useful resources to help children prepare,
plan and provide focus for long term care.
Dr. Hopkins has over thirty years experience as a professor, case
manager. and consultant in health and human services with emphasis
on elder care. He brings a wealth of experience and information that
will benefit anyone facing issues of long term elder care.

Health issues in America: an interfaith perspective
Boston Avenuers are invited to join local
religious and medical leaders as they discuss
“Medical Dilemmas of Living and Dying in
America” at the 2011 Interfaith Trialogue
Series.
Sponsored by OCCJ and funded in part by
a Tulsa Library Trust endowment, the threepart series will meet on Sundays, Feb. 6, 13
and 20, at 2 p.m. at varying locations. Dr. Bill
Crowell will moderate and the programs are
free and open to the public.
Session 1 - “Living vs. Dying: The
Costs,” at Boston Avenue - Most health-care
dollars go to patients in their last six months of
life. Many want to die at home, but typically
do not. The technology that sustains us at the
end presents enormous ethical challenges. Are
there more cost-effective, less controversial
interventions? Jeff Alderman, M.D., and
Kevin Donovan, M.D., OU School of
Community Medicine
Session 2, “Who Cares & How,” Feb.
13, Peace Academy, 4620 S. Irvington –
Peace of soul might mean choosing against
treatment. What happens when people stop
seeing disease as a battleground? Is palliative
care an acceptable response to the challenge
of terminal illness? What is “terminal”? Many
fear pulling the plug on those we love. Where

From the
Pastor’s Study
Mouzon Biggs, Jr.
Jeremiah’s preaching and writing fill more paper in the Hebrew
Scriptures than any other single author. The Book of Psalms is longer,
but it includes the poetry of many different writers. Isaiah is slightly
longer, but many scholars believe it is the work of three different
writers. This Sunday’s lection comes from the first chapter of
Jeremiah’s long work.
Rabbi Gunther Plaut has written, “Israel (the ten northern tribes)
and its capitol Samaria had already been destroyed. Now Judah (the
two southern tribes) and its capitol Jerusalem were in mortal danger.
“Jeremiah saw the problem as more spiritual than political.
Jeremiah’s call to be a prophet came in 625 B.C.E. while Josiah was
king of Judah. Jeremiah was about fifteen or sixteen years old.”
Dr. Ronald Clements adds, “Jeremiah sensed that he could never
be anything other than a prophet. Even so, he protested to God his
unreadiness for such a high responsibility - probably still a teenager.
“Assyrian power was waning after having destroyed the northern tribes. Some celebrated that loss of power, but Jeremiah was
already focused on the rising power of Babylon.”
My sermon will be, “DO YOU KNOW ME? I’VE KNOW
YOU LONGER!”

Thank you to everyone who has worked so hard to prepare
for YOUTH VESPERS this Sunday! Extra meetings, homework
and lots of texting....I appreciate you and your willingness to take
our service so seriously! It’s going to be a great service, thanks to
your leadership and all the extra youth involvement.
Thanks, Joel, for always going the extra mile to help our youth
shine! The music will be great! .... and I will be hoping for a few
broken cookies out of the 500 we are making that we can eat
BEFORE the service!! :)
Our senior high are gearing up for our 30-hour famine retreat.
If you have not signed up for this experiential retreat about world
hunger - do it now! Brochures were mailed to your home and
extras are available on the fourth floor.
We begin on Friday, Feb 4th and end on Saturday, Feb 5 at
noon. If you have other responsibilities, we hope you will join us
when you are able. Cost is $20.
We have started new classes this week! We even videotaped
footage of our “Hope Lives” class getting a little hands-on
experience in being a “Rich Young Ruler”... You know it’s hard to
do God’s work if you so busy hanging on to all your STUFF!
If you missed last week- come on! We have a place for you!!

This Sunday is Youth Vespers and it is a day to look forward
to, that is for sure. I hope you have your calendar marked for this
service at 6:00 p.m. Sunday in Community Hall. Many of you will
be helping as leaders, but all youth are encouraged to come and
participate. You will get cookies!!
The Confirmation Class has its first parent and youth Sunday
this week in Jubilee Hall. Your refreshments will be served in
Jubilee Hall so go directly there instead of the third floor.
We postponed our DTBA speaker series that was to begin
last week. Instead, it will begin this Wednesday evening, 7:00 p.m.
on the third floor. Join us for hot chocolate, Little Debbie’s and
conversation.
The annual mid-high girls Valentine dinner at my house is
scheduled for Friday evening, February 4th. I will be cooking for
you and hope each of you will be able to attend. Invitations are in
the mail to you this week.
There is a common denominator in all of our events this
week, besides growing in our faith.... It has to do with eating
together. It’s a good thing!!
Yours truly, Debbie

Correction:
Last week’s issue of The Word incorrectly stated that our senior high youth’s recent Mexico mission trip was made possible by
earnings from our Mission Endowment Fund. Actually that mission
was generously funded by our Youth Stockholders.
Both mid high and senior high ministries greatly appreciate your
support and look forward to this year’s stock sale beginning May 1.
Our church’s Mission Endowment funds a number of other local and international outreach projects, adult and intergenerational
mission trips, and covenant relationships with missionaries.
