In Lost in the Sea of Despair, you, the protagonist, are at sea and must pit your survival skills against the elements of nature. If you were all alone on a leaking yacht in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, would you choose to escape by inflating your life raft? Or would you stay on the yacht for as long as possible? Such life-or-death dilemmas and more await you throughout the entire story. Fret not, however, as along the way you’ll discover vital information on how to stay alive, as well as useful geographical facts about your surroundings. All that’s left is for you to decide: Are you ready for the adventure to begin? Contributed by Ng Cheng Soon JP Book Review HENRY HYENA, WHY WON’T YOU LAUGH? Author: Douglas Jantzen Publisher:New York: Aladdin, 2015 Call No.: Junior Lending Picture Book English JAN Henry the Hyena and his friends are known for their giggles and tricks. They enjoy making fun of the other animals in the zoo and playing pranks on them. One day however, Henry realises that he can no longer laugh or smile. No matter how hard he tries, he is unable to join in teasing others as he feels sorry for them instead. Puzzled by this, he goes to the wise old Giraffe, who gives Henry valuable advice on how to solve the problem. 20 Using lively illustrations paired with catchy rhymes, the story aims to teach readers the importance of being nice to others. By learning to help others in need rather than laughing at their misfortunes, Henry and his friends ultimately discover the secret to true friendship – and happiness. Contributed by Tan Yun Xian Junior Reading Ambassador Review THE WESTING GAME Author: Ellen Raskin Publisher:New York: Puffin Books, 2004 Call No.:Young People Fiction RAS Have you ever imagined what you would do if you became rich one day? Combine that fantasy with a sophisticated game of strategy and a compelling desire to find a murderer, and you have a fascinating mystery thriller in The Westing Game. Beginning with the completion of a new apartment building, Sunset Towers, the story gradually unfolds, revolving around its specially selected, though seemingly unrelated, tenants. After the corpse of multimillionaire Samuel Westing is discovered in the house next door, 16 tenants of Sunset Towers are invited to the private reading of Westing’s will, where it is revealed that not only have they been named as Westing’s potential heirs, but that one of them present is responsible for his death as well. The tenants are then split into pairs and given several random words, said to be clues that will reveal the killer’s identity and allow the ‘winner’ to inherit Westing’s entire estate worth a whopping $200 million. Thus setting off a bizarre quest to solve a murder mystery and obtain the key to the Westing fortune … Besides the setting, crime, suspense and eventual solution, another enjoyable aspect of this book is that its characters are often not who they seem to be. Ellen Raskin has created 16 distinctive characters who each brings his or her unique elements to the central puzzle without confusing the reader in the process. This Newbery Medal-winning book is perfect for readers who enjoy intriguing and complex puzzles; they may still find themselves unable to solve the mystery ahead of the characters despite knowing all the clues in advance. The author’s clever use of wordplay and red herrings also make this book an enjoyable mental challenge for readers.
