Introduction
The Canlan M200 network communications device provides seamless network
connectivity for Cansec access control products. The Canlan M200 supports CP40,
H1000, Smartlock® control panels and Zodiac Max readers. On Hurricane systems,
network traffic only occurs when events or commands need to be relayed between
the host and the control panels. Bandwidth is conserved through a complete
implementation of the CP40 and H1000 protocol in the Canlan device.
A standard network connection is provided for interfacing purposes. This allows the
use of low cost Category 3 (or higher) unshielded twisted pair wiring, typically
present in most LAN environments. With onboard processing and low bandwidth
usage, the Canlan M200 offloads work from host software with minimal impact on
shared networks.

POWER INPUT
There are two options for providing power to the Canlan M200:
1. 12 VDC connector
The supplied AC-DC power adapter can be plugged into the 12VDC
connector on the side of the Canlan M200.
2. 12 VDC input pins
The Canlan M200 can be wired via the RS485 header connector to a
Cansec access control panel's 12 VDC output.
Note: In either option, it is highly recommended that a battery backup is
in place to prevent the unit from being reset during an AC power failure.
A power outage will result in a 20-30 second loss of connectivity to the
device as the unit drops into configuration mode. Normally, an installer
has a proper backup battery for the access control panel so it is safe to use
power from the panel.

Setup and Configuration
NOTE: The following describes how to configure the Canlan M200 with firmware
version 8 & 9 using Canlan Configuration software version 3.3. To utilize all
advanced features of this software, the Canlan model must be M200. The software
may also be used with legacy Canlans.
The configuration menu is grouped into five sections: Address Configuration,
Operational Mode, Remote Diagnostics, RS485 Serial Interface and IP Security. Each
section reflects a group of settings that will be stored in the Canlan M200's flash
memory. The configurations/settings may be backed up to a binary file for future
restoration.
ADDRESS CONFIGURATION
The Address Configuration section defines the static IP address that will be assigned
to the Canlan M200 as well as its subnet mask and gateway address in the event
the host PC is on a different subnet than the Canlan M200.
In most corporate environments, the specific values for the IP address, subnet
mask and gateway must be obtained from the IT staff managing the network.
Failure to do so could result in address conflicts and other routing errors.
Enter the following information:
 IP Address
 Subnet Mask
 Gateway
 Port
OPERATIONAL MODE
Operational Mode
The Canlan M200 supports several modes of operation designed to ease host
workload and network traffic and others acting as simple Ethernet to RS485
bridges. The modes are selectable on a product basis for simplicity.

Idle Auto-Disconnect
The idle auto-disconnect inactivity timer drops any active host connection after a
specified interval (in minutes) during which no data is transmitted or received.
This option helps prevent against a hung connection with a host which has gone
offline without properly closing the socket connection or other situations where
packet loss may occur.
Recommended Setting
For SmartLock Pro/Managed Access/Plus, it is highly recommended that idle autodisconnect is enabled with a value of 1 for the duration in minutes.
Idle auto-disconnect is not needed for Maestro systems, because the Maestro
interface monitors the connection to ensure it is active.
REMOTE DIAGNOSTICS
The Canlan M200 provides a rich set of diagnostic features to assist in both the
installation and ongoing maintenance of field hardware. Additionally diagnostic
software is available to assist in connectivity issues between a host and a Canlan
M200. See the Canlan M200 Troubleshooting section for more details.
The Canlan M200 implements a set of diagnostic commands which can be issued
from the Advanced Diagnostic software tool. In addition, it continues to support
execution tracing at selectable detail levels via Telnet or the Advanced Diagnostic
software tool.

Determining MAC Addresses
Some installations may require Canlan M200 MAC address information for
switching or filtering purposes. The MAC (Media Access Control) address consists
of 6 bytes typically expressed in hexadecimal format. The first 3 bytes are a
manufacturer’s code and are fixed. The remaining 3 bytes are unique for each device
produced by that manufacturer. The manufacture’s code for the Canlan M200 is 0090-C2 with the remaining 3 bytes different for each unit.
The MAC address can be determined by one of the following methods:
WINDOWS COMMAND LINE
If the Canlan M200 is currently installed and operational, the MAC address can be
determined using the arp command available from the command line. Open a
command line window and enter the commands as shown below.

TROUBLESHOOTING A CONNECTION
Invalid Configuration
If during startup, the Canlan M200 determines that the current flash memory
configuration is invalid, Cfg/Err LED will flash on and off every second. The
Canlan M200 will default to IP address 10.0.0.100. It is important to note the
status of ACT LED (RJ45 Port Activity) if connecting through the Ethernet
interface.
Troubleshooting an Invalid Configuration
If Cfg/Err LED is flashing, connect to it using the USB cable. Power off the
Canlan M200, wait a few seconds, and power it back on again or hit the reset
button. The Cfg/Err LED should stop flashing while in the 20-second
configuration mode. Recheck the information entered in the configuration
software and click Save.
Configuration vs Host Software
Host software such as Maestro, Hurricane or Smartlock Pro will be unable to
connect to a Canlan M200 while an active connection exists between the Canlan
M200 and the configuration software.
NOTE: If you are attempting to reconfigure a Canlan M200 that has already
been configured, don't enter the default IP address (10.0.0.100). Use the IP
settings that were programmed into the Canlan M200 when it was configured. If
you do not know the original IP settings, use a USB connection instead.
Example: If the Canlan M200 has
been configured with IP address
10.0.0.246 then use it for any
connection instead of the default IP
address 10.0.0.100.
