Fr. Thomas J. Winkel, M.Div.
Parochial Vicar
The Gospel of John contains the following passages wherein Jesus refers to Himself
as the Good Shepherd:
“I am the Good Shepherd, and I know mine and mine know Me, just
as the Father knows Me and I know the Father, and I will lay down
My life for the sheep.”
Jn 10:14-15
And again in verses 16-17:
“I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. These also I must
lead, and they will hear My voice, and there will be one flock, one
Shepherd. This is why the Father loves Me, because I lay down
My Life in order to take it up again.”
Jn 10:16-17
This weekend, we celebrate Good Shepherd Sunday.
"As we celebrate this feast, we pray for fidelity to our
vocation. The Church invites us to honor the vocation
of all Christians given at baptism. Through the vocation
of marriage, priesthood, diaconate, consecrated life, and
the single life, may we further the reign of God."
Baptisms:
First and third Sundays of each month at 1:00 p.m.. Pre-registration
required. Parents expecting their first child should arrange to attend the
required Pre-Baptism class. These are offered at the parish on the 4th
Sunday of January, April, July and October at 1:00 p.m. in Mary’s Room.
Pre-registration is required. Call the Parish Office.
Marriages:
Engaged couples should make their arrangements with the priest at least
6 to 12 months in advance of their wedding.
Holy Communion for the Homebound:
Please call the Parish Office whenever a family member is seriously ill or
hospitalized. Arrangements can be made to bring Holy Communion to
the homebound weekly or monthly.
MASS SCHEDULE
Saturday:

P ASTOR ’ S D ESK ...
My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
In preparation for today’s world day of prayer for vocations, I have been reflecting on the lives of the men and women with whom I have
worked over the years and who have entered the priesthood and religious life. I also ask that you continue to keep in your prayers our
two seminarians from Sacred Heart of Jesus: Brother Daniel Bowen, O. de M. and Matthew Weaver.
Brother Daniel was born and raised in Mayfield Heights, OH. He attended RCIA and was baptized,
confirmed, and received first Holy Eucharist (received into the Church) on Easter Vigil 1994 at Saint
Gregory the Great Church, South Euclid, OH
As a parishioner he was involved in the many ministries including Holy Name Society, Catholic Men’s
Fellowship, a Lector, an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, a volunteer at the pizza-sausage
booth during the annual Festivals, and a daily communicant at the 6:45 a.m. Mass. In 2003 he began to
experience a call to the priesthood and religious life.
Following two years of discernment in August 2006 he left his career, his possessions, friends and family and entered the Order of the
Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy (Mercedarian Friars). www.orderofmercy.com
Having made his simple profession (first vows of chastity, poverty, obedience and redemption) in the vowed religious life, he continues
his studies at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia, PA from where he hopes to receive his Master of Divinity Degree next
month.
Matthew, the son of Tim and Sandy Weaver, was raised in Lake County, and attended NDCL where he was
very involved in their sports program. He continued his interest in sports for the beginning of his college career. Shifting his focus he began reflecting more deeply on the Spiritual life and graduated from Ohio Dominican in Columbus, Ohio.
Since joining our parish, Matthew has been very involved in the Spiritual and Liturgical Life of the Parish. He
has assisted as a Master of Ceremonies for many of our Masses and for our Corpus Christi Processions. He
has also been very helpful in the training and guiding of our Altar Servers.
Following graduation from college he responded to God’s call to the priesthood and began his preparations with the Institute of Christ
the King; a society of Apostolic Life of Pontifical Right whose goal is the honor of God and the sanctification of priests in the service of
the Church and souls. Their specific aim is missionary: to spread the reign of our Lord Jesus Christ in all the spheres of human life.
www.institute-christ-king.org
Having begun his preparations in Chicago, Matthew is now in their seminary in Gricigliano, very close to Florence, Italy. He will receive
the habit of the Institute and tonsure in July.
Please keep these fine men in your prayers. Let us pray that we will be blessed with many more vocations to the priesthood and religious life from our parish.
May God’s blessings be yours this Easter Season.
Yours, in His Most Sacred Heart,
Father Ireland

SUNDAY
God has called each one of us by name,
yet called each of us to different paths in life.
He called Saint Francis to a life of joyful poverty, in which Francis had no place to rest his
head, or things to call his own.
God called Joseph of Arimathea to a life of wealth, rich enough
so that when Christ died, Joseph could give His body a place to
rest and rise.
While most of us will not be called to the extremes of either Saint
Francis or Joseph of Arimathea, we pray for the grace to be
good stewards of what talents and resources we have been
given, using what we have, not for selfish gain, but to build the
kingdom of God, and to bring others to Him.

Congratulations!!! The Confirmation Mass last Sunday was
beautiful. I am very happy for and proud of our eighth graders.
Many thanks to Fr. Ireland and our Jr. High teachers for their roles
in preparing the students.
Our second graders enjoyed their Day of Reflection on the
27th. Their ‘Jesus Day’ consisted of prayers, an arts & craft
session, and a bread making activity. They will receive their First
Holy Communion on Sunday, May 6.
COME AND SEE “GODSPELL” performed by our talented
seventh and eighth grade students. They are working hard daily,
and this promises to be another excellent musical. The performances are on Wednesday, May 9, through Sunday, May 13.
Tickets are only $8 this year. All performances are at 7p.m.
Our sixth graders took a field last Wednesday, seeing many
sights throughout downtown Cleveland. I went along with them
and learned some interesting things about our fair City. It was an
educational and enjoyable trip for all of us.
First and fourth grade students had a special guest speaker
from the Boy Scouts of America organization visit them last
Tuesday. Several boys seemed interested in joining. We have
several students already involved in scouting. (Our students combined with Boy Scouts from St. Clare Parish to work fish fries during Lent.)

F AMILY P ERSPECTIVES ...
Like Jesus the Good Shepherd, Christian families do not run
away and abandon each other when the wolves of life attack.
Faith, loyalty, standing firm and sacrificing our lives for each other
builds bonds that can withstand any challenge. In fact, solidarity
in struggles makes families stronger.
