Camp Sunrise Succeeds in Week-Long Summer
Camp for HIV-Impacted Youth
2007 proved to be an extremely successful year for Camp Sunrise. The
summer started with a weekend leadership retreat for the Sundogs—
campers aged 15-17 who play an important leadership role at camp. The
Sundogs provide the younger campers with role models during the week
of camp, as well leadership in their own local communities, and the Sundog Retreat prepared them for the challenge.
The Camp Sunrise week-long camp for youth ages 6-17 took place August
10th through the 18th, and this year the experience was once again a huge
success. We were lucky to be able to welcome 20 new young people into
the program this summer, and a total of 110 campers were accepted for
camp. Campers participated in canoeing, arts and crafts, team building
exercises, a sports program and an “Oscar Night Out” talent
show. Several stylists from Hair Color Xperts in the Short North of
Columbus came down to camp to offer their hair styling services to all of
the campers. The participation from this group of stylists was very
popular among the young people at camp.
Camp Sunrise would not be possible without collaboration from
individuals and groups throughout Ohio. This year, National City Bank in
Columbus donated cabin supplies, including disposable cameras, journals,
and sports bags for each of the campers. In addition to donating bath
products for all of the campers, Bath and Body Works volunteers came
down to camp prior to the campers’ arrival and decorated all of the cabins
with various themes.
Since the children who attend camp come from areas throughout Ohio, it
is necessary for Camp Sunrise to rent buses to drive the young people to
camp—and this year, we had 10 volunteer chaperones who supervised the
campers to and from camp. In addition, Camp Sunrise relies on the
support of over 60 dedicated volunteers. These individuals, the backbone
of the program, gave up a week of their time to be volunteer camp
counselors and program staff during the week of camp.
While the week of camp gives the children a break from the
day-to-day stressors they deal with in their own lives, we wish
we could do more for the youth through year-round
programming. In order to coordinate more events and retreats
throughout the year, we’ll need to increase revenue through
grants, fundraisers, corporate and individual donations.
Instead of sending out an annual appeal this fall, we decided
to include a story in this newsletter about how Camp Sunrise
has helped one of our campers achieve her goals and attend
college. Please read this letter and consider making a donation
before the end of the year on behalf of Jina. In order to make
this easier for you, we have included a donor reply envelope
as well.

masks to take home with them.
Potbelly Sandwich Works Supports Camp Sunrise
at their Free Sandwich Day
In June, Camp Sunrise collected donations for free
sandwiches at the Potbelly Sandwich Works at Easton
Town Center. Over $1200 was raised at the event,
and we would like to thank Potbelly for choosing Camp
Sunrise as the beneficiary for this event!
Camp Sunrise Scholarship Reaches 4th Year
Several years ago, Christin Locke (the founder of Camp
Sunrise) was talking with Matthew Wick (one of our
dedicated volunteers) about the amazing talents of the youth
at Camp Sunrise. After this conversation, Matthew decided
that he wanted to support these youth beyond camp, to help
them pursue their dreams and goals. A yearly donation from
this very special volunteer makes the Camp Sunrise
Scholarship Program continue to be possible.
Each year we receive numerous applications and choose
one recipient. This past summer, Jina Gonzalez was
selected as our scholarship recipient. Jina has been active
in the Camp Sunrise program since she was 11 years old.
She has always been a role model in the program, and this
past August she decided to come back to camp as a Junior
Counselor. Jina speaks out in the community about being
HIV positive and was also awarded the National Association
of People with AIDS (NAPWA) Youth Leadership Award at
their annual conference in Cleveland, Ohio. Jina,
congratulations for your accomplishments. We extend our
sincerest thanks to Matthew Wick for supporting our youth in
such a powerful way.
