Tips for Driving in Bad
Weather
S
•
•
gt. Glass submitted the following
information for students and their
families:
Turn your headlights on anytime you need
to turn your windshield wipers on – in rain,
fog, sleet, freezing rain or snow. (It is now
the law in Virginia that you have to turn on
your lights whenever your windshield
wipers are on).
Double or triple the space you normally
leave between you and the next car in wet
weather. You’ll need even more space to
stop (up to ten times as much space) on
slick roads.
•
Brake gently
•
Make sure your exhaust tail pipe is clear if
you’ve backed into a snow bank. If your
tail pipe is blocked, you could get sick or
die from carbon monoxide poisoning.
•
When driving on slippery surfaces like ice
or snow, use gentle pressure on the
accelerator pedal when starting. If your
wheel start to spin, let up on the
accelerator until traction returns.
What To Do in An Accident
A
parent’s worst nightmare: your teen’s
been involved in an automobile crash.
While the thought is very upsetting, a
few words of guidance from you might just
prove to be supportive to your teen during a
very difficult time. Even the most level-headed
motorists can be shocked, stunned, and more
than a little shaken.
Most people will have their adrenaline pumping
after a crash and it may be difficult to keep a
level head. Simply trying to stay calm can be
difficult, particularly if others around you are
excitable, too.
Provide these following tips to your teenager.
You may even want to keep them in the glovebox of your car, so that your son or daughter
has immediate access to the information:
Remain calm.
Check to make sure that you and your
passengers are all right.
If another vehicle is involved, check to make
sure those individuals are all right.
If anyone at the scene of the crash requires
immediate medical attention, call 911 for an
ambulance.
If you're judged not to have been at fault in the
accident, the other driver's insurance company
should pay for repairs, and vice-versa.
Call 911 for the police.
From Guidance
If your vehicle is stopping traffic or is
presenting a hazard (and can still be driven),
Virginia law requires that you move it to the
side of the road.
COLLEGE APPLICATION DEADLINES
Winter Break is fast approaching and so are
the majority of college application deadlines.
Please be aware that the deadline to turn in
all transcript requests for college and
scholarship applications that have a deadline
before January 14, 2011 need to be turned in
to your student’s guidance counselor by
December 10, 2010.
Teens: Call a parent or guardian.
Make a note of which police department and
which ambulance service respond to the crash
(you should get the name of the police officer
you speak with at the crash scene).
HOBY WINNER ANNOUNCED
Exchange information with the other driver.
This includes the driver’s name, address, home
phone, work phone, license plate number,
year/make/model of vehicle, vehicle
identification number, name of insurance
company, phone number of agent, insurance
policy number and effective date. (Most of this
information is recorded on the police report).
Congratulations to Lesley Durrett! Lesley was
selected as Brookville High School’s HOBY
(Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership)
representative. Lesley will travel to James
Madison University in May to participate in the
program.
PSAT RESULTS
If there are witnesses, get their names,
addresses, and phone numbers.
The PSAT results and score reports will be
distributed to all 10th and 11th grade students
who took the PSAT on October 16, 2010 during
an informational session on how to interpret
their report on Thursday, December 16, 2010.
Please review the PSAT results and score
report with your student.
Don’t discuss the crash with anyone except
police.
If you are hurt or shaken up and need help
getting home, call someone to pick you up.
ENCOURAGE YOUR HIGH SCHOOLER
TO VOLUNTEER IN YOUR HOME TOWN
Call your insurance agent / claim department.
Teens tend to think that the whole world is
focused on them – that “everyone” is looking
at that huge zit or “everyone” will laugh if
they fail the driver’s test. Help your teen
think about the needs of others by
encouraging him/her to volunteer in your
community. They could volunteer at:
Record the Scene:
Many insurers recommend carrying a
disposable camera in your glove box to record
the scene of an accident. A camera can prove
more effective than attempting to draw the
scene of the accident on a piece of paper. It's
easy to forget critical details after an accident,
so take notes of any circumstance you think
are unusual or particularly relevant to the claim
while at the scene.
A local camp. Any camp could use any extra
pair of hands.
The local humane society.
The local library.
2
The local children’s museum. Amazement
Square has a teen volunteer program
Crème with Chocolate Icing, and Cherry. If
you would like to place an order you may
contact Ann Reid @ 239-3636 or email
reida@campbell.k12.va.us or order from any
BHS Red Cross Club member. Money raised
will be used to fund Red Cross Club
community service projects during the year.
The local hospitals. VA Baptist and Lynchburg
General have teen volunteer programs.
Red Cross Club is also busy purchasing items
to stuff stockings which will be filled and
returned to the Salvation Army by December
10, and in preparing for our Bloodmobile on
December 15. Hope to see you at the
Bloodmobile.
Habitat for Humanity
And so many more!
Teens who give back to their communities
often have higher self-esteem and are more
courteous to others. They also gain valuable
work experience – which will look GREAT on a
job resume, college or scholarship
application. If your teen isn’t sure where to
volunteer their time, encourage them to talk
to their guidance counselor. We can help
connect your teen with a volunteer program
that will be right for them.
