Educational Goals The College’s educational goals focus on presenting high-quality, comprehensive programs of study that embrace the following expectations of student learning: •Students will demonstrate a central core of biomedical or behavioral science knowledge in their field of study including theory, foundations, clinical skills and applied clinical/practical applications as appropriate to the specific academic program. •Students will demonstrate communication skills through clinical assessments, group 2 | 2014 ANNUAL REPORT • CORNERSTONES OF SUCCESS discussion and/or written or oral presentation in their respective fields. •Students will demonstrate an understanding of scientific inquiry by designing, conducting, presenting or interpreting research in their field of study as appropriate to their academic program. •Students will identify, retrieve, understand, analyze, synthesize and apply information collected from various sources and in varied formats including those requiring skills in the use of information technology. The annual report that follows celebrates the "cornerstones of success" laid by our College community this year. We are proud of our new approaches to learning and competency assessment that have been initiated and implemented, of our academic programming that has been affirmed and applauded by national accrediting bodies, of our progress in operations and facilities undertakings, and of our commitment to build and sustain collaborative relationships and strategic partnerships. Each of these cornerstones forms a strong infrastructure of support for our programs in Pennsylvania and Georgia. We thank every member of our community for your commitment to PCOM. That commitment makes possible our ongoing successes in training osteopathic physicians, physician assistants, pharmacists, and behavioral and biomedical scientists. Sincerely, Paul W. McGloin, CPA, LLD (Hon.) Chair, Board of Trustees Jay S. Feldstein, DO ’81 President and Chief Executive Officer 2014 ANNUAL REPORT | 3 At Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, we pause each year to reflect on the accomplishments we—a community of teachers and mentors, scientific investigators and scholars, practitioners and healers, colleagues and advocates—have attained in education, research, patient care, and service with national and worldwide impact. We celebrate the CORNERSTONE we have laid, and we recognize, through these valuable foundations, the promises we have yet to keep. Each cornerstone represents new opportunities to learn, to innovate, to lead. And each cornerstone epitomizes the promise and potential of our College’s instructional, research and service missions. 4 | 2014 ANNUAL REPORT • CORNERSTONES OF SUCCESS ES OF SUCCESS 2014 ANNUAL REPORT | 5 Building Skills Training and Competency Assessment: THE DR. MICHAEL AND WENDY SALTZBURG CLINICAL LEARNING & ASSESSMENT CENTER The 11,000-square-foot Dr. Michael and Wendy Saltzburg Clinical Learning & Assessment Center opened in Rowland Hall in January and was dedicated in April. The Center, named for generous benefactors Michael C. Saltzburg, DO ’77, and his wife, Wendy, boasts dynamic conference rooms; training rooms focused on endoscopy, orthopedics, cardiology and laparoscopy; an ICU/CCU suite; an emergency room; and an operating room. New additions to the Center include various simulators (including TRAUMAman), a portable robotic surgery trainer (akin to the da Vinci surgical robot), and haptic technologies for teaching gallbladder, hernia and OB/GYN procedures. Still under development is a disaster area that will showcase best practices for first responders extricating people from car wrecks, or skills that might be needed in a pandemic or terrorist event. 6 | 2014 ANNUAL REPORT • CORNERSTONES OF SUCCESS The Center, which employs safe quality controls, also houses the College’s life-size, programmable human patient simulators (STAN, as well as pre-hospital and nursing patient simulators) and an InsightArthro VR System that was previously in use. Furthermore, the Center administers the College’s robust standardized patient program, first introduced in the late 1980s under the guidance of the late Robert Berger, DO ’58. Learning at the Center, which bridges classroom and clinical settings, brings together students in the doctor of osteopathic medicine, physician assistant and psychology programs. This practice underscores the importance of interdisciplinary learning—where various members of the healthcare team learn together to practice clinical skills, develop communication abilities and demonstrate mastery of clinical competencies. COMPETENCY ASSESSMENT 2014 ANNUAL REPORT | 7 PROGRAM FULFILLMENT 8 | 2014 ANNUAL REPORT • CORNERSTONES OF SUCCESS Attaining Program Fulfillment: PCOM SCHOOL OF PHARMACY – GEORGIA CAMPUS The Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine School of Pharmacy – Georgia Campus doctor of pharmacy degree program has been advanced from candidate status to accredited status by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), 135 South LaSalle Street, Suite 4100, Chicago, Illinois; www.acpe-accredit.org. The accreditation term granted extends until June 30, 2016, which is the customary term for a new program receiving accreditation status. The ACPE sets standards for the education of pharmacists to prepare them for the delivery of pharmacistprovided patient care. This achievement caps an effort that began in 2008 to launch the new PharmD program and obtain full accreditation. Graduates from fully accredited pharmacy schools are eligible for licensure from state boards of pharmacy. Inherent within the PCOM School of Pharmacy – Georgia Campus mission is the focus to prepare students for proactive, patient-centered care. In labs during their first three years, students learn vital proficiencies such as measuring blood pressures, interpreting blood cholesterol readings and administering vaccinations. They begin clinical rotations early on, receiving 300 hours of Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences in their first three years before completing advanced practice rotations in their fourth year. Rotations provide hands-on experiences in a wide variety of rural and urban hospital and community pharmacy settings. The program also prepares students to be leaders, both as pharmacy managers and as advocates for the profession. With the graduation of the program’s charter class this past June, the impact of PCOM School of Pharmacy – Georgia Campus will be felt statewide. Many of its first graduates have elected to remain and practice in Georgia and surrounding southern states. 2014 ANNUAL REPORT | 9 Partnering for Growth in Scientific Research Opportunities: PHILADELPHIA COLLEGE OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE AND THE FRANKLIN INSTITUTE This past spring, as the Franklin Institute prepared to open its doors to the 53,000-square-foot, $41 million Nicholas and Athena Karabots Pavilion, a novel partnership was initiated. The Franklin Institute drew upon the expertise and proficiency of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine faculty as it sought to obtain sliced and plastinated brain sections for its permanent exhibition on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway—an unparalleled showcase that educates and engages national and international visitors as they gain an understanding of brain function and the promise of neuroscience research. The anatomical dissections and plastinated teaching models produced by PCOM Department of Bio-Medical Sciences faculty Denah Appelt, PhD; Brian Balin, PhD; and Kerin M. Claeson, PhD, consist of female and male brains of different ages. Specimens 10 | 2014 ANNUAL REPORT • CORNERSTONES OF SUCCESS are longitudinal slices that match magnetic resonance imaging. The specimens are sourced from the Human Gifts Registry, a non-profit agency of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, managed in part by Michael McGuinness, PhD, for PCOM anatomy courses. In addition, interdisciplinary PCOM faculty, researchers and students joined the Franklin Institute in a community-wide educational festival (April 25–May 3, 2014). PCOM participants staffed special forensic medicine presentations and led interactive science and medical lectures. The festival culminated in a signature event, Science Carnival on the Parkway, during which PCOM exhibited Mega Brain®, the world’s only portable, inflatable, walk-through brain. PCOM researchers were on hand to explain brain structure, function, trauma and disease. RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES 2014 ANNUAL REPORT | 11 BLENDED LEARNING 12 | 2014 ANNUAL REPORT • CORNERSTONES OF SUCCESS Blended-Learning Advantage: MORE EFFECTIVE STUDENT ROTATIONS Blended learning is a relatively new technology-based teaching approach and has not routinely been used for clinical education. Under the direction of Erik Langenau, DO, MS, chief academic technology officer, the method has been implemented—following successful pilot studies—at three of the College’s clinical rotation sites where third-year DO students are engaged in pediatric rotations. Clinical and e-learning methods are combined at these sites; students see patients three to four days a week, and participate in online and web-based programs (remote clinical encounters, case reviews, discussion and reflection boards, etc.) throughout the rotation. The methods expand teaching from individual clinical assessments to incorporate problemsolving and process-based experiences. In addition, content is standardized across training sites, allowing students at different locations to learn about conditions to which they may not be exposed at their assigned training site. For instance, a student rotating in an officebased setting may not have the opportunity to see a child in respiratory distress. By being offered instructional opportunities online, these same students will have the opportunity to learn how to care for a child with respiratory distress. Furthermore, didactic content can be delivered remotely from a centralized location. Often, clinical instructors enjoy having students on their services; however, some report a lack of interest in covering required topics in lecture format. The blended-learning program allows for dissemination of didactic content, encouraging clinical instructors to do what they do best: teach and role model how to deliver quality, compassionate patient care. The program has been well received by students. The blended-learning program is anticipated to expand to other College disciplines and clinical rotations. 2014 ANNUAL REPORT | 13 A Vision for Facility Expansion: GEORGIA CAMPUS – PCOM Since Georgia Campus – PCOM’s establishment in 2004, there has been an evolving plan for operational and facility improvements to sustain enduring campus growth. Steps have been taken to identify immediate and long-term facility needs for the original 20-acre, 150,000-square-foot branch campus, located in Suwanee, Georgia, nearly 25 miles north of Atlanta. The plan anticipates future buildings, amenities and campus components. During the past fiscal year, a rear façade construction/restoration work project has been in process. The exterior work is important to the campus’ aesthetic design, as well as its energy efficiency. At the same time, the project provides new space for nearly a dozen faculty and administrative offices. Once the project is completed, the result will be a transformation of the campus image. 14 | 2014 ANNUAL REPORT • CORNERSTONES OF SUCCESS In addition, the project provides a sense of connectivity to the Northlake building, a second property for the campus. The 21,000-square-foot, 6.7-acre property was built in 2005 and purchased by the College in 2011. Projected plans are for this building to house 34 faculty and administrative offices on the top floor and a newly-expanded Clinical Learning and Assessment Center on the ground floor. Active academic programs and future academic programs such as a physician assistant program (anticipated in 2016), will fully operate within the original campus building, providing training to more than 1,000 students annually. FACILITY EXPANSION 2014 ANNUAL REPORT | 15 CULTURE OF INCLUSION 16 | 2014 ANNUAL REPORT • CORNERSTONES OF SUCCESS Furthering a Culture of Inclusion: THE PRESIDENT’S DIVERSITY COUNCIL Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine believes that a vibrant and diverse institutional climate is essential to providing osteopathic medical and health science students with an education that promotes the effective delivery of health care in wide-ranging communities. Full inclusion is a central component of the osteopathic identity: mind, body and spirit. To this end, the College has established the President’s Diversity Council, which has completed its first year as a standing committee. Under the auspices of the Office of Diversity and Compliance, the Diversity Council is charged with supporting the president and cabinet in advancing programs that enhance diversity and cultural competency and facilitate pluralistic learning environments that are welcoming, safe and affirming for all. These programs address issues of diversity leadership, student recruitment and retention, curriculum, faculty recruitment and retention, and research. Work is undertaken through six sub-councils: Military Members, Discharged/Veterans and Their Families; LGBT; Disability and Other Special Needs; Gender, Diversity and Inclusion; Educational Outreach and Community/Alumni Engagement; and Measurement and Outcomes. Recent initiatives on both PCOM campuses have included community food drives for homeless veterans and their families; opportunities for DO and clinical psychology students to provide medical and behavioral care to chronically homeless individuals (in collaboration with Project HOME); new LGBT healthcare resources on campus and enhanced HIV training and certification opportunities for medical students; Yoga on the Steps fundraising for Living Beyond Breast Cancer; proposed policies on religious accommodations; and workshops and lectures that underscore the College’s diversity mission, goals and objectives. 2014 ANNUAL REPORT | 17 Donor Overview During the period of July 1, 2013, through June 30, 2014, donors contributed $2,732,051 to Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Kermode lived his life educating future generations of researchers, osteopathic physicians and pharmacists with exemplary joy, compassion and kindness. The fund was established with a lead gift from the Kermode family and has grown with donations from students, colleagues and friends whose lives were deeply touched by Dr. Kermode’s gentle influence. Grant Support of PCOM Healthcare Center – Lancaster Avenue Division PCOM Healthcare Center – Lancaster Avenue Division received a $50,000 grant from the Independence Blue Cross Foundation. This is the Healthcare Center’s second Blue Safety Net grant from the Foundation to help implement the PatientCentered Medical Home (PCMH), leading to recognition by the National Committee for Quality Assurance. The Healthcare Center provides medical and consultative services to patients and families in an underserved, at-risk West Philadelphia community. It is a primary teaching site, and the Lancaster Avenue Center has adopted a continuous and coordinated healthcare program and strategy. It is serving as the prototype for incorporating the PCMH at all PCOM Healthcare Centers. The Blue Safety Net grant is helping to provide funding to engage a consulting group to assist in the process of operational and institutional change to implement the PCMH by providing electronic health record system upgrades for monitoring and reporting outcomes and to develop curriculum for senior medical, physician assistant studies and clinical psychology students using the PCMH model. Golf Classic 2013 The College’s 21st Annual Golf Classic, Title Sponsored by Independence Blue Cross, was held in September 2013 at Whitemarsh Valley Country Club. The Classic raised over $115,000 for the PCOM Healthcare Centers. These funds will provide critical health services to underserved and at-risk populations in North and West Philadelphia, Roxborough, Wynnefield Heights and Laporte, Pennsylvania, in rural Sullivan County. Special thanks to James Bonner, DO ’86, and Carol A. Fox, MM, retired associate vice president for enrollment management, who co-chaired the event, and to numerous volunteers, sponsors and in-kind donors who made the outing a huge success. The College also extends sincere thanks and warm appreciation to Independence Blue Cross for their leadership support again this year. 22 | 2014 ANNUAL REPORT • CORNERSTONES OF SUCCESS Andrew Taylor Still Legacy Society N amed in honor of the “father of osteopathic medicine,” PCOM’s Andrew Taylor Still Legacy Society recognizes those who have made gift provisions for the College in their estate plans. The simplest and most common planned gift is through a will or bequest; however, there are several estate plan vehicles. Each is as unique as the donor—often enabling donors to contribute more than they thought possible and to enjoy the satisfaction of giving while increasing their personal tax refund or reducing taxes they would otherwise owe come April 15. Charitable gift annuities, remainder trusts and lead trusts offer donors the added benefits of a life-income option and considerable flexibility to estate and tax planning. Naming PCOM as owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy may be advantageous in carrying out the donor’s philanthropic and personal goals. The same can be said for designating the College as either a primary or contingent beneficiary of an IRA, 401(k), 403(b), Keogh or other retirement account. Donors will avoid significant income and estate tax liability. Becoming a member If you have already made a planned gift provision for PCOM and have not yet notified the College, please consider letting us know so that we may include you as a member of the Andrew Taylor Still Legacy Society. We would like to thank you for your meaningful gift and acknowledge your participation in publications. This may encourage others to review their estate plans and inspire individuals to make a lasting legacy for future generations at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Andrew Taylor Still Legacy Society members are also invited to the annual reception of the President’s Leadership Circle. PCOM’s development staff is available to help donors find and, in cooperation with the appropriate advisors, construct the best plan for all concerned. To learn more, contact Scott Righter, special gifts officer, office of alumni relations & development, 4180 City Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19131-1695, 215-871-6120/800-739-3939 or scottr@pcom.edu. Visit www.legacy.vg/pcom We thank the alumni and friends who have generously provided for the future support of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine through planned giving.
