MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Friends of the Wilton Library,
Recent good fortune has allowed me to assume the role
of President of the Wilton Library Association, Inc. working
alongside the Board of Trustees. The Board is comprised of
many talented Wiltonians whose purpose is to achieve the
library’s worthy mission to be a center for Lifelong Learning at
the heart of the Wilton Community. Greatly enhancing these
efforts is the value added by you, our fellow citizens who
selflessly support us and share your time, intellect, enthusiasm
and resources to keep Wilton Library humming like a well
calibrated and oiled machine through thick and thin times.
At Wilton Library, our unofficial credo is “productive
innovation.” A happy manifestation of this productive
innovation ethos is the library’s new MakerSpace.
In an age of ever-shifting media where content delivery
platforms proliferate and morph from day to day, we are
besieged by “disruptive innovation.” In contrast, Wilton Library
does its best to anticipate trends and adapt accordingly to
meet our customers’ evolving needs and preferences. We
embrace and promote all ways for our customers to discover
and enjoy enduring or new works of literature, music, news,
information, entertainment and much more.
Of course, all of these wondrous innovations are due to
your ongoing generous support, both directly through your
contributions and participation in events which collectively
fund a quarter of the WLA’s annual operations, as well as
indirectly via a town grant funded from your tax dollars
covering the balance.
The MakerSpace was recently inaugurated by the award
winning robot named Christopher, which was created by the
Library’s very talented Robotics Team Singularity Technology.
We invite you to stop in for a visit and learn how to code a
computer, create something nifty on a 3D printer, or stitch
a quilt with a state of the art sewing machine and more.
Thank you all for your continued support keeping the Library
at the heart of our wonderful community.
Ann Duffy
President, Board of Trustees

Ways of Giving
MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Dear Friends,
In reflecting on the highlights of the past year, one theme
emerged which exemplified our service to the Wilton
community and our patrons. That theme is “innovation.”
Webster’s Dictionary defines innovation as something
newly introduced, or the act or process of introducing new
ideas, devices, or methods. By this definition, last year was
a particularly dynamic one in which innovation directed our
course in achieving Wilton Library’s mission as a gateway
to discovery, where we inform, enrich, connect, and inspire
our community.
Innovation was demonstrated early in the year, when our newly
formed Robotics Team successfully built a robot and competed
in the FTC FIRST Tech Challenge competition. We also learned
that our library-sponsored robotics team was rare; Wilton
Library was the only library listed among the participants. It
was particularly gratifying when our rookie team ended the
year winning two trophies.
Our robotics initiative quickly spawned other ideas. We
realized we needed an appropriate home for the team in
order to adequately support their work. That realization acted
as a catalyst to forge ahead with the idea of developing a
“maker space” in our library. Thanks to the support of the
Shoff Foundation, that idea became a reality in June, when
we officially opened the Innovation Station at the 119th
Annual Meeting of the Wilton Library Association. The goal
of our Innovation Station is to serve as a gathering place for
the community to observe, explore, discover, create, and
collaborate about technologies, innovations, or acquire new
technical skills. Within this creative space, we encourage
continuous learning in the sciences, technology, engineering,
arts, and mathematics (STEAM). It will be a place to inspire
inventors and inventions, as well as foster the appreciation and
understanding of emerging technologies, where patrons can
see a robot being built, be introduced to 3-D printing, Arduino,
Raspberry Pi’s, transfer VHS tapes to DVD, and much more.
Throughout the year, our services and resources also kept
pace in the area of emerging media. We introduced streaming
music, added more digital resources, and offered training
sessions to assist patrons with using a variety of electronic
devices. Our programs continued to enrich the cultural
environment of Wilton by offering musical concerts and
art shows by some of the most talented artists. We also
offered new literary and cultural lectures, classes, and talks by
internationally acclaimed authors and personalities. We were
particularly honored to welcome home and host a very special
conversation with the Solicitor General of the United States,
Donald Verrilli, Jr.
The past year was indeed a busy and exciting one in which
we embraced a variety of innovations and new methodologies
to disseminate information and share knowledge. The future
of our library holds many more exciting endeavors. So, I
invite you to join us in introducing more new experiences
and opportunities to our patrons. With your support we will
remain not only the cultural heart of Wilton, but also a forum
for continuous learning where all can experience the “joy of
understanding.”
Sincerely,
Elaine Tai-Lauria
Executive Director

PATH TO INNNOVATION
NEW RESOURCES, NEW
LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES,
NEW CONNECTIONS.
ALL FREE. ALL YOURS.
ALL INNOVATIONS THAT
HAPPENED AT WILTON
LIBRARY THE PAST YEAR.
Wilton Library’s FY2013/2014 was a year
marked by progress and innovation.
Within our community, Wilton Library
continues to play a vital role in our
residents’ lives — providing the
traditional resources, exciting programs
and welcoming environment that has
been our calling card since the founding
of the Wilton Library Association in
1895. At the same time, we strive to
respond to the ways our patrons make
use of our resources. As time passes,
more and more books and magazines
are read in digital format, movies and
music are accessed by downloading
or streaming, new technologies are
exposing our community to new skills,
and library spaces offer more than just
a quiet reading room atmosphere.
Walk into Wilton Library on any given
day, and yes, there are still plenty of
those quiet reading and studying areas
as well as hard copies of all the books,
magazines, newspapers, music and
movies a person could desire, but you
also will have more opportunity to
discover, connect and explore through
new technologies. We now invite you
to experiment on a 3D printer, surf the
web on new computers, embroider
an object with an electronic sewing
machine, build your own small circuit
board, stream a selection of Dave
Brubeck’s jazz greats, download
the latest Nelson DeMille bestseller,
watch a newly-released independent
documentary, learn to use the latest
version of Adobe Photoshop or even
explore how to Tweet for the first time.
For many of these experiences, you
don’t even have to pass through the
front doors of 137 Old Ridgefield Road.

CULTURAL CROSSWAYS
“THANK YOU DEAR LIBRARY
FOR OFFERING JOANNE’S
POETRY SESSIONS. IT
WAS SUCH A PRIVILEGE.
JOANNE IS SUCH A
JOY AND MARVELOUS
ORATOR. PLEASE BRING
HER BACK AGAIN.”

Literary Programs
While this year may have led us down
the Path to Innovation, we also traveled
well above the speed limit along the
literary superhighway. The Author Talk
program continued to draw some of
the biggest names in the publishing
world and attracted more than 2,000
attendees from not only Fairfield
County but from across the tri-state
and throughout New England. We
welcomed Pulitzer Prize winners, New
York Times and international bestsellers
as well as authors who were also
comedians, bloggers, chefs, gardeners,
crafters, poets and more — each
sharing their stories, experiences and
expertise. The Brubeck Room played
host to many of the same names
you’ll find on your bookshelf at home,
including Nelson DeMille, Barbara Taylor
Bradford, Elizabeth Strout, Lisa See,
Patricia Wells, John O’Hurley and more.
Area Author Affairs gave locals a locale
and an audience to discuss their works.
Poetry came alive with discussions
conducted by Joanna Ecke and Judson
Scruton. Sessions led by Ben Van
Vechten, Mark Schenker and Gerald
Weiss unearthed new literary insights
into the Victorian novel, the Bible and
other classics. Our librarians hosted
monthly Book Buzz discussion groups
that welcomed regulars and drop-ins
to discuss new books, favorites reads
as well as other insider literary scoop.
The Wilton Library Readers program
explored a variety of literature through
insightful discussions with Susan Boyar.
Outside library walls, our Senior Center
Book Discussions examined a vast
selection of fiction and nonfiction
works. Thanks to funding from the
Grodin Family Fine Writers Fund, the fall
of 2013 brought community members
together to read, discuss and reflect
upon our one-town, one-book Wilton
Reads selection, The Cutting Season
by Attica Locke.
“I APPRECIATE SO MUCH
THE EFFORTS THAT GO
INTO ALL THIS FABULOUS
MUSIC, THANK YOU…TO
HAVE SUCH HIGH CALIBER
AND ECLECTIC MUSIC IN
WILTON IS INCREDIBLE.”
Art
Wilton Library’s main gallery and
first floor walls display some of the
town’s and region’s most diverse
and celebrated art talent. Thanks to
volunteer art chairman Ed MacEwen
and his team, these monthly exhibits
visually enrich our walls and our lives as
well as give local artists the opportunity
to display and sell their work. A portion
of the proceeds from sold artwork
provides a valuable funding stream
to enhance library collections and
programs. The Wilton Schools’ Fine
and Performing Arts exhibit in May
shared the burgeoning artistic talents
and musical performances of students
in grades K-12. In cooperation with
the Weir Farm Art Center and Weir
Farm National Historic Site, monthly
presentations and exhibits showcase
the work from artists in the Weir Farm
Artist-in-Residency program. Like all
art receptions and exhibits at Wilton
Library, the Weir Farm events welcome
the community free of charge.
Music
Wilton Library’s musical heritage
experienced a loss this year with the
passing of our great supporter Iola
Brubeck, wife of the late jazz legend
Dave Brubeck. The Brubeck family
continues to play a large role in the
musical prominence of Wilton Library
through their involvement with our jazz
programming. The Hot & Cool: Jazz
at the Brubeck Room music series,
which saw six sold-out jazz concerts,
drawing top names from both the U.S.
and European jazz circuits. Another
musical milestone was reached when
we welcomed Grammy Award-winning
American singer, poet, and musical
legend Art Garfunkel to the Brubeck
Room stage for four sold-out shows.
Our own CT’s Own series continued to
provide a showcase for performers who
live or work in Connecticut and featured
three concerts. Thanks to the generosity
of the Village Market, the 13th season of
the Summer Music and More Concert
Series again attracted music lovers of
all ages for four indoor/outdoor shows.
Showcasing the generosity and talent
of Wilton youth, local teen band Grey
Rocks played music for a cause as all
the proceeds from their Brubeck
Room concert were used to provide
water-filtering Life Straws to needy
areas worldwide.
Film
Wilton Library was the place to find
the area’s most thought-provoking
documentaries and engaging film
discussions. Thanks to the expert
programming of filmmaker Megan
Smith-Harris, the New Perspectives
Film Series continued to fill the
Brubeck Room with award-winning
documentaries followed by stimulating
conversation. Wilton Go Green shed
important light on environmental
issues through our cooperative
Green Speakers Series documentary
programming. The Reel Mondays series,
hosted by the League of Women Voters,
showcased a quarterly film highlighting
political activism and current affairs.

Where our Pathways Begin
A lifelong love of reading, learning
and exploration gets its start in our
Children’s Library which serves as a
hub of enrichment for children ages
newborn to 12. Educational and
entertaining resources and programs
for children, families and caregivers
are offered year round and a number
of new programs and initiatives keep
our children reading, writing,
discussing, learning and having fun.
A record 791 children participated in
the Summer 2013 Reading program
which utilized the Evanced Online
summer reading resource for the
first time. A Pages through the Ages
theme highlighted fun and educational
aspects of the 1950s, ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s
and 2000s. Summer readers recorded
an astounding 13,090 books and 530,118
pages read. An Olympic-themed winter
reading program was created to keep
the pages turning.
Our fun in the Children’s Library leapt
off the bookshelf with new dance and
performance programs made possible
by partnerships with the Conservatory
of Dance and Summer Theatre of New
Canaan. In response to patron requests,
two new clubs were formed — a
Rainbow Loom Club and a Pokemon

“JUST WANTED TO SAY HOW
WONDERFUL STORY TIME

Club. Our Minecraft Club expanded
its reach through participation on the
Fairfield County Library Minecraft server.
Fresh air and sunshine were high on the
agenda at the Children’s Garden Club
and Ambler Farm Reads programs.
Hands-on was the rule for a music
series with the Norwalk Symphony
as well as a dollhouse furniture-making
workshop. The movies came alive as
Star Wars characters captivated the
100+ participants in our Take Your
Child to the Library program.
The preschool program inspired
our youngest readers with monthly
outreach expanded to include four area
preschools. The Mother Goose on the
Loose program proved an effective
early literacy tool in reaching our sixmonth to 2-year old audience while
popular storytimes were offered for
children through age six. A successful
day-long Harry Potter Summer School
fundraiser entertained young wizards
in grades 3 to 6. Additional programs
kept our children crafting, exploring
diverse cultural traditions, interacting
with animals, learning about the
environment, writing computer code,
playing chess, and more. It all happened
beyond the bookshelf at Wilton Library!
TEENS MOVING AT HIGH SPEED
Top 10
While many of our teens may have
been tinkering with technology,
plenty still made good use of our
circulating materials. Here’s a look
at the top 10 items borrowed from
our Teen collection:

Friday Night Lights, the first season
The Alchemist
Insurgent
Paper Towns
The Hunger Games

Wilton’s teens are among the fastest
travelers along today’s information
superhighway. The Teen Services
Department continues to provide
the information, tools, technology
and assistance teens need for their
educational journey but also has
become a hub for teens exploring their
creative sides. Among the highlights,
teens…
• created animated films
using Xtranormal
• tinkered with Arduino circuit boards
• gained an understanding of
investing and building a portfolio by
competing in the Stock Market Game
• critiqued and enjoyed films, books
and live music
• learned how to write code to develop
their own apps
• produced the eighth successful
Poetry in Motion event whereby 52
students participated through writing,
performing, creating artwork, dancing
and/or playing music in a two-night
performance program
• got crafty with tie-dye, duct tape,
gingerbread and other mediums
• learned to cook and create healthy
menus Iron Chef-style
Tech-loving Teens
This past year technology reigned
supreme in the Teen Services
department. Singularity Technology,
Wilton Library’s newly-formed teen
robotics team, competed in a national
program called FIRST (For Inspiration
and Recognition of Science and
Technology). During the fall months,
the team built their own robot,
affectionately named Christopher, and
in the process learned not only about
robotics but also about using social
media, budgeting, fundraising, creating
promotional materials for marketing,
and of course, working as a team.
Singularity Technology competed
in several scrimmages, two state
qualifying matches and then advanced
to the CT State Championship where
they won first prize for the best
presentation to the judges. The team
was also responsible for the fundraiser
Destroying Your Hard Drive which
allowed community members to
drop off old computers and have
their hard drives destroyed.
Outside its own department walls
and with a full steam ahead focus on
technology, the Teen Services team
spearheaded the initiative for the
creation of the Innovation Station
maker space, which had its grand
opening in June 2014.
11
MADE IN WILTON…INNOVATION STATION IS NOW OPEN
12
OUR PATH TO INNOV
ATION REACHED ITS
PINNACLE WITH
THE OPENING OF
WILTON LIBRARY’S
NEW INNOVATION
STATION MAKER
SPACE IN JUNE 2014.
Thanks to a generous grant from the
Shoff Foundation as well as a series of
private donations, Innovation Station
brings the community into a new kind of
educational experience — a technology
crafting experience, one that offers
firsthand learning with cutting-edge
equipment and fosters a can-do attitude.
This hands-on use of new technology
enhances skill sets for adults and offers
young tinkerers a firsthand look at future
career opportunities.
With a mission statement of “Fostering an
environment of literacy and continuous
learning in the Sciences, Technology,
Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics
(STEAM),” Innovation Station offers
an opportunity for the community to
explore new technologies, equipment
and avenues of inspiration that might
not otherwise be available to them.
Set within library walls, Innovation
Station is located in the space adjacent
to the Teen Services area. Its near
seamless design matches the library’s
existing finely-milled oak cabinetry and
sleek glass interiors and allows for those
outside the space to see the innovations
happening within. The 320-square
foot fully-enclosed area allows for up
to 20 creators to work simultaneously.
Innovation Station is open to patrons
ages 13 to 113+; not to exclude our
youngest innovators, new technology
workshops are presently being planned
for Children’s Library patrons.
At the grand opening, Innovation Station
contained a 3D printer, an iMac with
Final Cut Pro, a PC with Adobe Creative
Cloud, a digital scanner, VHS to DVD
converter, die cutter, and electronic
sewing machine, as well as a sewing kit,
hot glue gun, markers, pinking shears,
pliers, screwdrivers and more. Hardware
components such as Arduinos and
Raspberry Pi’s are also available for patron
projects. Over time, Wilton Library hopes
to add more items, such as a laser cutter,
3D scanner and digitizing art tablet.
Innovation Station is home to
technology workshops, demonstrations
and open sessions where patrons work
alone or together on projects. We hope
to see many of you visit Innovation
Station in the upcoming months and
join Wilton’s own maker movement!

FUNDRAISERS
Wilton Library is fortunate to possess
an incredible pool of dedicated people
and resources, including our generous
donors who provide nearly 25% of
our operating budget and 100% of
the funds that grow our services and
collections, our programs, events
and emerging media resources. This
25% is achieved through year-round
fundraising efforts.
In addition to the annual Friends of
the Library campaign, milestone gifts,
special funds and appeals, and other
bequests, our development team,
along with a bevy of tireless, generous
and creative volunteers, coordinated
three major fundraising events and four
book sales. An additional fundraiser was
held this year; a Community Shredding
Day was made possible through the
generous support of City Confidential
Shredding in Stamford. One hundred
percent of shredding fees collected
directly supported Wilton Library.
14
The 14th Annual Ladies’ Soirée held
in early October proved again to be
Wilton’s favorite girls’ night out. More
than 160 women supported the event,
enjoying great food and drinks, music,
friends, a silent auction, drawings and
giving tree — all to support library
programs, collections and emerging
media resources.
More than 50 attendees raised a glass
in support of the Fifth Annual Wine
Tasting and Restaurant Showcase held
in November. Guests enjoyed fine wines
from New Canaan Wine Merchants
and fabulous food provided by 10
area restaurants and caterers including
Barcelona Sono, Little Pub Wilton,
Bianco Rosso, La Dame du Fromage,
Luca Ristorante Italiano, Market to Table
(caterer), Marly’s Bar & Bistro, Cactus
Rose Restaurant, Wave Hill Breads and
Portofino Restaurant & Pizzeria. Old
friends mingled, new friendships
were born and generosity abounded
as forks and glasses were lifted.
Beyond Words, the Library’s signature
fundraiser was held in early April with
196 guests in attendance. This year’s
Mondrian motif made for a colorful
and fun-filled evening. A hardworking
volunteer committee created a full and
festive evening throughout the Library
spaces, featuring great food prepared
by Bianco Rosso, a unique silent auction,
first-class live auction, a range of musical
entertainment and more. Be sure to
mark your 2015 calendars for a May 1st
Beyond Words benefit.
Our team of industrious and dedicated
book sale volunteers coordinated four
major book sales as well as ongoing
sales in our lobby. Book buyers continue
to travel from near and far thanks to the
high quality of our sales.
Our heartfelt thanks to our fundraising
event committees, book sale volunteers,
and our generous in-kind supporters,
sponsors and donors who continue the
tradition of helping the Library benefit
and engage all of Wilton.

WAYS OF GIVING
THE WILTON LIBRARY
ASSOCIATION IS
SUPPORTED BY THE
PUBLIC/PRIVATE
PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN
THE TOWN AND
INDIVIDUAL DONORS.
Support from the generosity of
donors ensures that the Library
can continue to provide the excellent
service and exceptional programming
the community expects.
The Wilton Library Association is a
registered 501(c)(3) cultural institution.
Gifts are fully deductible under federal
tax regulations. Donations are accepted
on-line using major credit cards on our
safe and secure web portal. The Library
does not share donor information.
Donate Now!
Wilton Library is only as strong as
its community of support. There
are many ways to contribute to
the Library, including:
Annual Friends Campaign
The Annual Friends Campaign supports
the programs, materials and services
that keep the Library at the center of
the community’s intellectual life. Gifts
at all levels are welcome. Your generous
contribution to the Library helps fund
the book collections, online databases,
children’s and teen programs, new
technology and more. Everyone who
gives to Wilton Library is a Friend
of the Library.
Young Readers
Making your child (through age 12)
a Young Reader ensures that your
donation will be used for Children’s
Library books, materials, and programs.
New Young Readers receive a book
bag, and a membership card good
for extra DVD rental days.
Memorial and Tribute Gifts
Honor someone with a gift to the
Library. Tribute gifts may be made
for birthdays, anniversaries and other
special occasions. Gifts in memory
of loved ones are also fitting tributes.
Books or other materials may be
designated, and the Library will provide
acknowledgement to the honoree
or family of the honoree.
Gifts of Stock and Securities
Wilton Library accepts the transfer
of appreciated securities directly
from you or from your broker. With
tax advantages for the donor, many
individuals have provided gifts
to the Library through a gift of
appreciated securities.
Bequests / Planned Gifts
You can provide for a future gift to the
Library now by including a bequest
provision in your will or revocable trust.
If you let us know of your plans, we’d
like to include you in the Wilton Library
Cornerstone Society, which recognizes
those who have included the Library
in their estate plans.
