PRESIDENT’S REPORT
It is hard to believe that almost a year has
passed since our last AGM! This is my last term as
President and I look forward to the role of Past
President starting after the AGM on March 4, 2015.
There will be Board positions open for election. I
would encourage you to consider letting your name stand for
nomination or encourage someone you think would be a good
asset to our Board of Directors. This is a great volunteer experience! Nomination forms are available at the Front Desk, or talk
to Harry Fischer, Mary Potvin or Dan Deringer, the members of
our Nominations Committee.
Our Finance Committee has reviewed our year end results
which have now been forwarded to our accountants for preparation of our Audited Annual Report for the AGM on Wednesday,
March 4, 2015.
It is also time for our annual Miners Memorial Raffle.
Special Thanks to all the donors we have been working with.
As soon as all prizes are confirmed we will go to print and start
selling tickets. Ticket draws will be at our 6th Annual Miners
Memorial Banquet being planned for May 1, 2015.
One year ago, I congratulated Bob Tarleck who was just
appointed to the Seniors Advisory Council for Alberta. Bob
was a strong advocate and an excellent representative for the
South Zone, one of six regions. Members of this Council report
to the Minister of Seniors. Bob is a member of Nord-Bridge
and understands senior’s issues and so it was sad to note that
Bob has tendered his resignation citing health issues. May we
wish you Good Health, Bob!
Nord-Bridge Centre is a meeting place for some Lethbridge East PC constituency meetings. (We rent space in the
evenings to accommodate the needs of several organizations and
individuals.) At the time of writing, the call for nominations has
been made and the first one out of the gate is Tammy Perlich.
Good luck to Tammy! She has always been an active participant on the local PC Board, and understands the Lethbridge East
Constituency.
I have one last “President’s Report to write for the March
issue of this Newsletter- but who is counting!

I grew up on a grain farm near Picture Butte and have been a lawyer for 15 years.
Presently I am legal counsel to the judges of Alberta Provincial Court and the Court of
Queen’s Bench. I am also a committed volunteer for several organizations in our community.
What I believe: It’s time to get off the energy roller coaster. We need efficient
delivery of government services. We need to diversify our tax base with manufacturing, technology, and innovation. We need more supports for seniors as they transition
from independent to assisted living. I will advocate for no new taxes and living within
a multi-year budget.
Jim Prentice wants new ideas and new people to rebuild our Party. I have both.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT
Greetings Members,
As we enter the month of February, I am
mindful of the 2015 Annual General Meeting, that
will occur on March 4 at 9:30 am. Please mark
this date in your calendar. The annual AGM is a
major threshold in Nord-Bridge’s activities; and in our course
of direction for the years ahead. I find the meeting is a great
opportunity to hear from our members, and to appropriately
thank volunteers, staff, and members for helping us grow. I
am pleased to report to you that Nord-Bridge ended 2014
with 1,348 members. This was an increase of 2 percent over
the proceeding year. Speaking of memberships, I call your
attention to the names of forty (40) new individuals 55 plus
who joined our Association in January 2015. WELCOME !!!!
And thanks for allowing us to support your goals and aspirations for our community of mature adults. We are sure you
will enjoy our programs; great Dining Room; educational opportunities; and “Friendly” seniors. Congratulations to Val,
Heather, Shirley, and the other staff who are helping us grow.
President Jim Hahn mentioned in his article that his
term at our helm is coming to an end in March. What a great
supporter and ambassador Jim has been of our “Friendly
Centre”. He has worked diligently to understand our programs, business, and finances; to communicate with our
members, expand funding, and political partners; and to represent us at the Municipal and Provincial tables. I sincerely
thank Jim for his years of service, and hope you look to him
as a stellar example of what a volunteer can accomplish. Jim
has particularly impacted our fundraising efforts. He has
been a great chair at Board Meetings and presentations.
Jim also saluted former Mayor Bob Tarleck, who has
represented the south on the Seniors Advisory Council for
Alberta. I do not recall another Advisory Council member
that has worked as closely with Nord-Bridge. Best wishes,
Bob, in the future.

Nominations Notice for Board
& Executive Positions
At the Association’s upcoming Annual General Meeting, scheduled for
March 4, 2015, 9:30 am, the membership of Nord-Bridge will be asked to
elect a new Executive. This occurs annually. Executive Officers can serve
a maximum of 3 years in the same position, excepting for the Treasurer
and Board Secretary who can be elected for extended terms. In 2015, our
membership will minimally elect a new President and Vice-President. The
By-Laws outlines nominations for these positions are elected from individuals who have served on the most recent Board, and have been a Director for at least 1 year. If you are interested in serving, see a member of
the Nominating Committee identified on the inside front cover of this
Newsletter.
In addition, at least 3 Board members will be elected at the 2015 AGM.

Programmer’s Report by
February is a busy programming month starting off with FREE massages from the Lethbridge College students on Wed., Feb. 4th 10 to noon
and ending the month with students from the Southern Alberta Institute of
Massage giving FREE massages on Fri., Feb. 27th from 9:30 to
11:30 am.
On Wed., Feb. 25th at 10 a.m. in the Dunford Diner Annex, a representative from Alberta Seniors will be here to present on the Alberta Senior Benefits Program & Services available to seniors. If you are new to
the benefits program or are interested to see if you qualify, please attend
this informative presentation.
The Nord-Bridge Community Volunteer Income Tax Program is set to
start on Mon., Mar. 2nd. To make an appointment please leave your
name and phone number at the Front Desk. A volunteer will start booking
appointments at the end of this month. For more information please refer
to the ad on Page 10.
Program Notices: Both Carpet Bowling and Darts have added extra
programming days. This is to accommodate the increasing numbers of
participants that have joined these two programs. Darts will now also be
played on Mondays from 1 to 3 p.m. (excluding Outreach Program days).
Carpet Bowling will play on Wednesday afternoons from 1 to 3 p.m. in
addition to their Wednesday and Friday morning time slots.
One last reminder: Nord-Bridge programming and most services will
be cancelled on Fri., Feb., 20th. Food services will be available from
8:30 to 10 a.m. only. The cancellations are necessary as Nord-Bridge
will be hosting five activities for the Alberta 55 Plus Winter Games. Good
luck to all Nord-Bridge members who qualified to represent our Zone!
New Programs: “Broadway Dance” and “Beginner Belly Dancing” will
be offered in the West Community Room starting Thurs., Mar. 5th. The
Broadway Dance class is a low impact dance class. You’ll learn basic
steps to the classic music of Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra. Beginner
Belly Dance is a great exercise for all ages, body types and abilities...and
no, you don’t have to show your BELLY! For more information and how
to register please see our ad on the back cover of this Newsletter.
From the Desk of Val
R
oses are red...and so are Valentines! February is here
and I’m reminding you to do something nice for someone
you love or admire on February 14, Valentine’s Day. I wish all of
you a Happy Valentine’s Day! We have been very busy at the
front desk with new memberships, renewals, program registration, and greeting our daily guests. We sincerely welcome all of
our new members and we hope you are finding us very friendly. If we have
missed your photo, please drop by as we want you in our member photo album.
Heather and I are getting used to the new, modern, electronic system of signing
up members for our activity Programs. It’s very cool to move this semi-annual
process into the 21st century. If you are a new member or contemplating membership please feel free to ask for a tour of the Centre and we will be glad to talk
with you and answer your questions.
We care so much for our members who are sick or have lost a loved
one. Greeting cards are now kept on the small table in front of our Reception
Desk (to use space more efficiently and make it easier) for all of you to add your
name or short message. Even if you don’t know the addressee, you can still put
your name on the card as a gesture of concern for a fellow member. These
cards are then mailed or delivered by Lydia when she visits. If you know of
someone who is ill or has lost a loved one, please let us know.
In these busy days, we have put together some interesting spring trips,
so watch the bulletin board and remember to sign-up early. Names cannot be
accepted without a deposit. Also, we must sign-up 12 travellers for trips on our
own bus and a minimum of 38 for the bigger buses.
I will be taking some R & R from February 12 to the end of March, but
my able partner, Heather, and our wonderful volunteer crew will be here to
serve you and take time to listen to your needs. I hope the rest of the winter
passes by swiftly and without any more ice or snow.
I’ll see you around April Fool’s Day!

DARTS REPORT by Ken Bobinec
Our Darts Program continues to do well.
We are now averaging up to 24 people at
each event. I am pleased to report that
we have been able to schedule a second weekly event. We now meet every Monday (except
Outreach days, usually the third Monday and of course
holidays) and Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. This will give
us up to three additional events per month. We welcome
all newcomers; we’ll teach you the game and you will improve quickly. We have fun and so will you!

OUTREACH REPORT by Rodger Halvorsen
Despite the flu epidemics in many senior care facilities, the January Outreach Program went well. Our
attendance totalled 92 guests and 15 volunteers
who were entertained by Gerry B Kool on his accordion and keyboard.
Our new member and volunteer, Marcella, started
the program with tunes on the piano. The door
prize was won by Hazel Carroll and not many
guests left before 3:15 p.m., so that tells us that
everyone had a good
time. Thanks again to all
the volunteers for making
our January event another
success.
Our next Outreach Program will be held on February 9th, with “Tom &
Curt” entertaining. This
will be a sure sell-out so
make your reservation

Oscar Ludwig; Al Frohlick (who will be having
knee surgery); Nina Waselenak; and Dianne
David. Dianne will be undergoing treatments
in the coming months.
January was a hard, cold month with a lot of flu illnesses
that affected seniors and many senior facilities. Several of
our own Nord-Bridge members were hospitalized.
Remember to call the Front Desk to let us
know when one of our members is sick or
in the hospital so a card can be sent. A
card will be placed on the table by the
Reception Desk for everyone to sign and
it will then be mailed or delivered to
them by our Visiting Angel, Lydia, to
bring them a little cheer.
