NZQA Expiring unit standard 5253 version 4 Page 1 of 3 Title Sketch and describe graphs Level 2 Credits 3 Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to sketch graphs of relations and describe features of graphs. This unit standard is based on objectives from Level 7 of Mathematics in the New Zealand Curriculum and Tauaki Marautanga Pangarau. Classification Mathematics > Algebra Available grade Achieved Entry information Recommended skills and knowledge Open, but competence is assumed in a number of Level 1 mathematics unit standards, including Unit 5238, Draw and describe graphs involving two variables. Explanatory notes 1 Learning Programme This unit standard can be used to assess outcomes of a learning programme based on achievement objectives from Mathematics in the New Zealand Curriculum (Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 1992): Algebra (Exploring patterns and relationships), Level 7, page 158 model a variety of situations, using graphs; sketch graphs and investigate the graph of a function, using a calculator and plotting points if necessary; use graphical methods to investigate a pattern in data and, where appropriate, identify its algebraic form; find by inspection, and interpret, maxima, minima, points of inflection, asymptotes and discontinuities for given graphs; describe the relationship between members of families of curves in terms of transformations; or on Tauaki Marautanga Pangarau (Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 1994), Taurangi, Taumata 7. The skills of this unit standard are some of those that could satisfy requirements for Unit 5243, Apply mathematical processes and skills in problems. NZQA National Qualifications Services SSB Code 130301 © New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2011 NZQA Expiring unit standard 2 5253 version 4 Page 2 of 3 Assessment Notes The standard must be met with relations from at least four of the following list of types: quadratic; cubic; circle; rectangular hyperbola; exponential; logarithmic; trigonometric. For outcome 2, at least four from the following list of features must be identified: symmetry; maxima and/or minima; types of discontinuities; asymptotes; behaviour for large values; transformations of the graph; periodicity. Calculators, graphics calculators and computers can be used in achievement of credit for this unit standard. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Sketch graphs of relations. Evidence requirements 1.1 Sketch is consistent with the information. Outcome 2 Describe features of graphs. Evidence requirements 2.1 The description of the features is consistent with the graph. This unit standard, unit standard 5255, AS90285, AS90292, AS90806, and AS90809 have been replaced by AS91257. Replacement information This unit standard is expiring. Please note Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards. Requirements for consent to assess and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMR). The CMR also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
