The plan was to install high-efficient fixtures in student housing complexes at UCI and the IRWD would document water savings. It was hoped that the impact would not only result in conservation efficiencies at the university, but would also validate technologies and methods that could be rolled out and successfully implemented within the IRWD. Installations began in summer 2011 and were completed in 2012. The project was so successful that the water saved could fill 475 swimming pools! UCI, home to six student housing communities owned by the university, hoped this project would contribute to their goal of reducing water consumption 15% below their 2007 baseline by 2014. Reducing water usage by an average of nearly 40% at three of their student housing complexes allowed them to get closer to reaching their ultimate goal. Due to this success, the IRWD, which spans 181 miles in densely populated Orange County, California, expanded the initiative to a district-wide Multi-Family Direct Install program. Implementation of this program will help them meet their targets of reducing the per capita water use 20% by 2020, reduce reliance on imported water, and realize long term cost-effective conservation programs. Water-Efficient Products Installed *Fixture=toilet, showerhead, aerator www.NiagaraConservation.com IRWD documented water savings derived from plumbing fixture retrofits in three different UCI student housing communities: Campus Village, Middle Earth and Verano Place. The fixtures installed were Niagara Conservation’s ultra-high-efficient Stealth 0.8 GPF toilets that replaced both 1.6 and 3.5 GPF toilets, 0.5 GPM bathroom faucet aerators and 1.5 GPM showerheads. ©2013 University of California Irvine, California PRODUCT SUMMARY Project Scope Housing Complex STEALTH ® 0.8 GPF First and only toilet to achieve a powerful, quiet flush using only 0.8 gallons of water. The Stealth at work: When flushed, as water fills the tank and inner chamber, air is forced down through a transfer tube and into the trapway. When flushed, a powerful vacuum from the depressurized trapway clears the bowl with a one-time, powerful flush. l Monitoring and Study Groups Meters were installed on two identical buildings from each community, while one building from each community was not retrofitted. Monitoring was conducted for a minimum of three months and once the monitoring was completed, the control buildings were then retrofitted. Water Savings By Housing Complex EARTH MASSAGE SHOWERHEAD ® Housing Complex 1.5 GPM l Uses up to 40 percent less water than standard showerheads. l Saves nearly 11,000 gallons annually. Three showerhead spray settings – needle, massage and combination. Patented pressure-compensating technology guarantees a feeling of great force while using less water, consistent flow rate regardless of water pressure. l 0.5 GPM l Uses 70% less water than a standard 2.2 GPM aerator. Produces forceful streams at a reduced flow rate that minimizes the amount of energy needed to heat water.
