The Newton News Term 3 Summer Term 1 Week 31 2015-2016 Friday 27th May 2016 FROM MR JOLLIFFE I thoroughly enjoyed the third residential visit of the year, which took place last weekend with Year 6. Despite the rain on Friday and Saturday all the children got on with lots of different activities and then enjoyed Brixham in the sunshine when the weather improved! I know that lots of the children were very tired this week and no doubt are now looking forward to a week to catch up. The first day after half term [Monday 6th June] is a Non Pupil Day and all the staff of the Federation will be meeting together to learn more about attachment theory and practice. This is an emerging research area and focuses on the importance of developing good relationships between parents and very young children and there is a lot that we can learn about behaviour that is useful for all children. I hope you and your family are able to enjoy some time together over the bank holiday weekend and look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Tuesday 7th June. QUEEN ELIZABETH II's 90th BIRTHDAY On Friday 10th June the whole Federation will be coming together at the Memorial Hall in Thorverton to celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday. Many of the children are preparing short pieces to share at the assembly as well as learning more about the remarkable life of Britain's longest serving monarch. The children will be leaving by coach and will be back before the end of the school day. A hot lunch will be available for everyone and it would help if as many children as possible have a school lunch that day. This can be ordered on the day and paid for online as usual. th There will not be any other cost to parents. (Please could you let the office know by 7 June if your child will be having a meal by completing the order form below. This will help the Kitchen Manager to order the correct quantity) The PTAs of the three schools have very kindly agreed to buy a commemorative coin for each child to take home as a reminder of the day and we are very grateful to everyone who has contributed to this. It should be a special day to remember! CLASS TEACHER APPOINTMENT On Tuesday we held interviews for four candidates to work at Newton St Cyres in September as Mr Akhurst moves into his new role as Head of School. The candidates taught a full lesson, fed back to children on some work, had two interviews and a written task so it was a very comprehensive assessment day. We have appointed Mr Josh Hamidullah to the post of class teacher for September and look forward to working with him. Mr Hamidullah undertook a training placement at Cheriton Fitzpaine so will be familiar to some children in the Federation and will be spending as some time with us later in the summer term to get to know the school. ______________________________________________________________________________________ FROM MRS HARRIS Dear parents and guardians As we near the end of the final week of a very busy yet productive half term. Both Year 2 and Year 6 have sat their SATS tests and have approached them with a really positive attitude. Thanks to you and to their teachers who have prepared the children so well. We realise this is a small aspect of what we value at Newton St Cyres but nonetheless it is important that children are equipped to sit the tests in a relaxed and confident way. Years 3,4 and 5 have also been sitting optional tests; these are new tests we are trialling for the first time this year. The Key Stage Two children have thoroughly enjoyed their tennis sessions at the Recreation Ground and we are indebted to the kindness of the Tennis Club for allowing us to use their facilities. Last weekend I was fortunate enough to be part of the staff group to lead the Grenville House water based activity weekend for the Year 6 children. It was a fantastic weekend for all the children, offering opportunities for team building and taking on new challenges and experiences. I really love these residentials, an opportunity for us teachers to see children in a very different situation. I was so proud of all the children; they were positive, great fun and a real pleasure to spend time with. I also feel blessed to be part of such a fantastic teaching team a huge thank you to those who were willing to give up more of their spare time to ensure that these residentials do happen. to Mrs Theedom and Mr Jolliffe who were there all weekend with me; also to Miss Scott-Hake, Mrs Wilkinson, Mr Hannaford, Mrs Parkes, Mrs Thorne, Miss Holmes and Mr Martin who also came down to support everyone. An amazing and memorable weekend for all the children – thank you. I am really looking forward to the summer fayre and sports day next half term (make a note in your diaries) but for now I would just like to wish all of you a relaxing half term break with your families. Enjoy! Don’t forget that children return to school on Tuesday June 7th as the teachers are having a day of training on the Monday. This year we were heading to Grenville House, Brixham. It was fantastic to spend the weekend with familiar faces from the federation. We stopped off on our trip to Brixham at Decoy Park, Newton Abbot. While there we had a snack, played in the park and completed the white orienteering course. Once we arrived at Grenville House we were told our dorm and activity groups. Over the weekend we participated in Canadian canoeing, kayaking, raft building, the high ropes course and a photography session. It was amazing to see so many children trying things for the first time. The support and encouragement given to their peers was fantastic. In the evening we enjoyed a walk to Churston Cove, a quiz, some beach art and a talent show. Many children’s highlight was the opportunity to spend their pocket money in the shops in Brixham. Many bought souvenirs or gifts for those back at home, while others refilled their depleted sweet supply! It was a fantastic weekend and we were really proud of all the children for taking part. Newton Nippers News Well we have come to the end of our Seas and Oceans topic, and have enjoyed looking at sea creatures, making a submarine to explore the underwater as well as many other things. Not quite related to this topic, but looking at how we care for animals, we all enjoyed our visit from the Donkey Sanctuary. They brought 2 donkeys with them, Bramble and Jasper, and we learnt about how they were cared for. We found out that they liked ginger biscuits for a treat! They were very kind and left some presents for us; a pencil, rubber and note pad each. Next half term we will be looking at The Jungle so please watch out for the tigers, monkeys, parrots and any other jungle creatures coming your way! To help us with this, we would gratefully recieve any empty egg boxes you may have. Each child has a green 'art' book in their tray, that they can use whilst at preschool to draw in, practise their writing or anything else they wish. We will send them home when they are full for you to look at. There will be lots going on in and around the school this next term, and dates are below for you; 6th June-Non-Pupil Day. Nippers will be closed, and reopen the following day on Tuesday 7th June. 10th June-no school dinners available so please bring a packed lunch if attending all day, 17th June-Save The Children Den Day. We will be making dens at preschool and raising money for STC 23th June-Nippers Sports Day/School Fayre. We will be holding our sports events on the school field, and inviting all preschool children/adults to attend from 1.30pm. The school fayre will follow at 2.30pm. 13th July-Foundation Stage assembly. This is for the current Reception children and the preschool children that will be starting school in September. It will be held in the school hall at 2.30pm-more details will follow nearer the time. Michelle Gidley - Pre-school Leader FANS NEWS FANS is currently working hard to raise funds for outdoor play equipment at the new school, and a number of exciting events are all set to take place during the remainder of the summer term. Quicke’s have kindly offered us the chance to run a cake and craft stall on Open Farm Sunday (5th June). The event is free and will take place between 11.00am and 4.00pm. There may be as many as 2,000 visitors on the day, which means that lots of cakes will be needed, so if any of you are able to make cake donations, please do. They can be dropped off at the house of Carrie-Anne Finning, any time before 11.00am on the 4th June , and they will be very gratefully received. We also need volunteers to help with running the stall, so if this appeals to any of you, please email me to let us know. The draw date for this year’s Summer Raffle is Friday 15th July. Many wonderful prizes have already been collected, and the tickets will soon be on sale, but there’s still room for more, so if any of you can donate prizes, please contact the office to let us know. The school will be running a Summer Fair on the 23rd of June, and Fans will be there to provide refreshments and sweets. We’d also like to run a stall for the sale of second-hand school uniform, so if any of you have old uniform that is of no use to you, but still has lots of use in it, please bring it in to the school office, and we’ll add it to the things we already have. This year the 6th Newton Revels takes place at the Recreation Field between 12 and 5pm on the 3rd July. Much frolicking is predicted, and FANS will be there to provide a bouncy castle for the youngsters. We’re certain this will go down very well, but we do still need volunteers to help to run it on the day, so if any of you think you’ll be able to help out with this, even for an hour (whilst your own children play on it free of charge!), please don’t hesitate to let us know.
