Analog Devices Powers Marvel Entertainment Super Hero Tech
for Video Series with Mouser and Imahara
June 9, 2016 – Mouser Electronics, Inc., a leading global authorized distributor of the newest electronic
components, is excited to announce a pair of cutting-edge projects as part of its latest series in the Empowering
Innovation Together™ program with former Mythbusters star and longtime Mouser customer, Grant Imahara. The
Project Heroes series introduces Mouser’s new Innovation Lab™ and assembles a “super team” composed of
Grant, viral video celebrity engineer Allen Pan, and Marvel Entertainment. Together, they set out to build
superhero technology straight from the movie Captain America: Civil War using electronic components from some
of Mouser’s leading manufacturers, such as Analog Devices and Molex.
Viewers will take a unique journey into Mouser’s Innovation Lab, where Grant and Allen create real-life
working versions of Iron Man's gauntlet and Captain America's shield. They’ll see who wins as the two battle it out
for the most innovative design. Supplying parts for both teams is Analog Devices, one of the world leaders in
analog, mixed-signal and DSP integrated circuits and sponsor for the Project Heroes series.
For Iron Man's gauntlet and laser assembly, Grant was looking for a device that was capable of powering
many systems while also providing several high-performance outputs. For this he chose Analog Devices’
ADP5054 quad buck regulator integrated power solution. Combining four high-performance buck regulators in a
48-lead LFCSP package, the ADP5054 not only helped Grant meet his performance requirements, but it also
provided him a small footprint and direct connection to high input voltages up to 15.5V with no pre-regulators. The
wide input voltage range, power regulation, low noise density and flexible parallel operation made the ADP5054
the perfect choice for Grant’s Iron Man gauntlet.
“The flexibility and power regulation capabilities of Analog Devices’ ADP5054 made it very easy for me to
power the various systems I had to account for in the gauntlet,” said Grant Imahara. “Not only could I could get up
to four extremely accurate buck converters delivering up to 6 amps, but I was able to harness and regulate all that
power and performance in a small 7 × 7 mm package.”
Allen’s design for his version of Captain America’s shield relies on sensors that measure static acceleration
and tilt, so he chose Analog Devices’ ADXL335 three-axis accelerometer. This thin sensor has very low noise
plus low power consumption of just 350 μA, and can measure the static acceleration of gravity in tilt-sensing
applications as well as dynamic acceleration resulting from motion, shock, or vibration. Allen chose the ADXL335
based on its low power and ±3g range, and felt the device offered superior measurement sensitivity for
determining the tilt of his arm when the shield returned after it ricocheted off its target surface.
See Grant Imahara team up with Allen Pan in a series of videos to highlight their full builds — from concept
to the final unveiling — exclusively on the Mouser website as part of Mouser’s Project Heroes series, sponsored
by Platinum Partners Analog Devices and Molex.
