FACTS
You can perform your own home energy audit.
Call 515-239-5177 for a free audit packet.
Compact fluorescent bulbs use 70% less energy
and provide the same amount of light.
All air conditioners have a seasonal energy
efficiency rating (SEER). Choose one with a high
SEER--it’s more efficient.
Windows and doors account for about 15% of
home air leakage. Holes into the attic and the top
of the foundation are the greatest sources.
You can save 1-2% on your energy bills by using foam gaskets behind all exterior outlet and
switch covers.
Keep your oven door closed. Each time you open
the oven door when you’re cooking can lower the
oven’s temperature as much as 25 degrees.

Audit Information
“An energy audit is a great
way to learn about your
home’s energy usage.”

ENERGY AUDIT
City of Ames Electric Services offers a free audit
to those interested in identifying how much energy
their home consumes and what measures may
be taken to make the home more energy efficient.
The audit will show the home owner problems that
may, when corrected, save significant amounts of
money over time.
An Electric Services’ auditor can pinpoint where
your house is losing energy. An audit will help
you understand the efficiency of your home’s
heating and cooling systems, look at how sound
your windows and doors are, inspect insulation
levels, show you ways to conserve hot water and
electricity, and help identify leaks in the building’s
envelope.
BENEFITS

and lowers the electric cost.
Provides education on energy usage
throughout the house.
Encourages Smart Energy practices.
Provides for more individual control over
electricity usage and ultimate costs.

Services and Ames citizens.
Contributes to a cleaner environment by
reducing power plant fuel consumption.
