NATURAL DAYLIGHT SOLUTIONS .NATURAL . . . . . . . . . . . . .DAYLIGHTING ......................... G lidevale market a range of natural daylighting products including tubular rooflights, conventional rooflights, combined rooflight/ventilators and hybrid lighting systems. Advantages ● Highly effective at delivering light into internal and badly-lit spaces without windows. ● Energy saving - reduces the need for artificial lighting and helps reduce carbon footprint. ● Wide range of applications - houses, flats, schools, hospitals, commercial, industrial buildings, care homes, nursing homes and student accommodation. ● Suitable for both new-build and refurbishment projects. ● Meet the thermal requirements of the latest building regulations. ● Hybrid natural and artificial lighting solutions. Sustainability The sun is a sustainable light source, and natural daylight can make a significant contribution to sustainable building design. Rooflights are an effective and efficient means of maximising natural daylight in dark areas, often virtually eliminating the need for supplementary electric lighting during the day. Glidevale natural daylight systems, used as a complement to artificial lighting, can considerably reduce the annual energy consumption of any building, thereby reducing CO2 emissions. Proven benefits of natural light Scientific studies have shown the positive benefits of natural daylight for health and wellbeing in a range of applications. The CIBSE Office Lighting Guide states that Natural Daylight is an almost universal worker requirement. When given a choice, most people prefer a working environment with daylight to one without. It references documented evidence confirming that excluding daylight leads to increased numbers of complaints about the working environment, and may adversely affect productivity. The Daylight Workplace Regulations state that “The lighting in every workplace shall, as far as is reasonably practical, be by natural light.” BRE Environmental Assessment Method The benefits of natural daylighting are recognised by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM). BREEAM Modules cover Schools, Offices, Healthcare, Retail and Industrial buildings. These buildings are then rated on a scale of PASS, GOOD, VERY GOOD or EXCELLENT. Glidevale natural daylight systems can contribute to the credits available under the Health and Wellbeing Section HW01 and the Energy Section E01. 2 ....................................... ................................................. .......................... Silsoe Research Institute report 4 ....................................... .................................................. .......................................... NATURAL DAYLIGHT SOLUTIONS SUNSCOOP™ TUBULAR ROOFLIGHT SYSTEMS ............................................................................................................ PERFORMANCE Unique test programme The performance of the Sunscoop Tubular Rooflight system has been firmly established by a unique and extensive period of testing, unparalleled in the tubular rooflight industry, carried out by Silsoe Research Institute (SRI) and BPD. Measurements were taken over four to six month periods during the summer/ autumn in all natural light conditions ranging from bright clear skies to overcast conditions. Internal view of different diameter tubular rooflights under test This comprehensive monitoring has for the first time provided accurate, realistic and reliable performance data for tubular rooflight systems including direct and diffuse lighting conditions. The research is subject of a published paper entitled ‘Optimisation & design of ducted daylight systems: 2010’ which is specific to Glidevale systems only. External lux sensor with shade ring for measuring diffused light levels Typical light levels The light output from the Sunscoop system depends on the size and length of tubing, offset angles if any, the external sky conditions and light levels measured in lux. The distribution of the light in the room depends on the diffuser type and the wall, ceiling and floor reflectances. A sophisticated in house computer programme has since been developed to accurately predict light levels of Sunscoop systems, based directly on the SRI and BPD monitoring. System layout Sunscoop systems can pass through a roof space or other void. For maximum effectiveness the tubing should be as straight as possible. However, since it is often impractical to site the ceiling diffuser directly below the roof-mounted glazing, the tubing system allows an offset by means of an elbow. It is adjustable up to 30º from vertical. Other elbows can be used but monitoring has shown that these will adversely affect performance. Siting Where possible the roof-mounted glazing should be located on a south-facing slope to gain the maximum amount of daylight under both direct and diffuse conditions. Factors which need to be considered when siting a Sunscoop include: Monitoring of three tubular rooflights simultaneously - Location of the room to be lit and suitable position of the ceiling diffuser. - Roof space obstructions. - Proximity of other buildings, trees etc, which may cast shadows at certain times of the day or year. .......................................................................................................... 5 .......................... .......................... UNIT ................... ™ T he Glidevale Sunscoop iPSV™ system is designed to provide both natural daylight and ventilation to bathrooms, toilets, kitchens, en suites and other similar areas, in both domestic and commercial applications. Natural daylight enters through a roofmounted glazing unit and is reflected down the highly reflective tubing through a Skyview ceiling diffuser. This innovative diffuser consists of a grid of fresnel lenses which provides a wider spread of light without excessive losses and enables the sky to be viewed. Ventilation is controlled by the ‘intelligent’ extract operated by a series of nylon bands, which respond to humidity levels and regulate the size of the air opening. TT9 Versatile tile ventilator Utilising a separate ducting system allows optimum performance from both units - the shortest possible length to maximise natural daylight through the ceiling diffuser and a separate duct for the extract to optimum length for the stack effect. Low profile glazing on Universal tile flashing Flexible ducting (support and insulation omitted for clarity) Ceiling (insulation omitted for clarity) 10 SR 98 Mirror reflective tube guides daylight down to the ceiling diffuser (insulation omitted for clarity) Key features ● No electrical connection or power source is required so the system is naturally energy efficient. Intelligent humidity controlled extract responds automatically to changes in relative humidity giving greater ventilation when humidity is high whilst preventing unnecessary ventilation and heat loss when humidity is low. ● 24 hour condensation control with gentle extraction - operates all day and every day as required combating condensation and mould growth. ● Completely silent in operation. ● Complies with the requirements of Approved Document F. ● Minimal maintenance - no mechanical components to go wrong. No costly solar panels or battery backups. ● Automatic response and no operating controls, ideal for special needs applications. ● Tests by Building Research Establishment (BRE) have shown an intelligent passive stack system incorporating a humidity sensitive extract gives a 15 - 40% saving in ventilation heat loss dependent on occupancy levels. ● Thermal modelling by De Montfort University has shown that the intelligent passive stack system operates effectively even in summer months and internal bathrooms. The research also demonstrated effectiveness even in very airtight dwellings. ● Can be supplied with optional integral electric light fitting which takes a low energy bulb to avoid the need for additional light fitting for night time use. Size 250mm diameter Sunscoop Ventilation unit area provides 12,270mm2 at maximum humidity with 125mm ducting.
