G
lidevale market a range of natural
daylighting products including
tubular rooflights, conventional
rooflights, combined rooflight/ventilators
and hybrid lighting systems.
Advantages
● Highly effective at delivering light into
internal and badly-lit spaces without
windows.
● Energy saving - reduces the need for
artificial lighting and helps reduce carbon
footprint.
● Wide range of applications - houses, flats,
schools, hospitals, commercial, industrial
buildings, care homes, nursing homes and
student accommodation.
● Suitable for both new-build and
refurbishment projects.
● Meet the thermal requirements of the
latest building regulations.
● Hybrid natural and artificial lighting
solutions.
Sustainability
The sun is a sustainable light source, and
natural daylight can make a significant
contribution to sustainable building design.
Rooflights are an effective and efficient
means of maximising natural daylight in
dark areas, often virtually eliminating the
need for supplementary electric lighting
during the day.
Glidevale natural daylight systems, used as a
complement to artificial lighting, can
considerably reduce the annual energy
consumption of any building, thereby
reducing CO2 emissions.
Proven benefits of natural light
Scientific studies have shown the positive
benefits of natural daylight for health and
wellbeing in a range of applications.
The CIBSE Office Lighting Guide states that
Natural Daylight is an almost universal
worker requirement. When given a choice,
most people prefer a working environment
with daylight to one without. It references
documented evidence confirming that
excluding daylight leads to increased
numbers of complaints about the working
environment, and may adversely affect
productivity. The Daylight Workplace
Regulations state that “The lighting in every
workplace shall, as far as is reasonably
practical, be by natural light.”
BRE Environmental Assessment Method
The benefits of natural daylighting are
recognised by the Building Research
Establishment (BRE) Environmental
Assessment Method (BREEAM).
BREEAM Modules cover Schools, Offices,
Healthcare, Retail and Industrial buildings.
These buildings are then rated on a scale of
PASS, GOOD, VERY GOOD or EXCELLENT.
Glidevale natural daylight systems can
contribute to the credits available under the
Health and Wellbeing Section HW01 and the
Energy Section E01.

SUNSCOOP™ TUBULAR ROOFLIGHT SYSTEMS
............................................................................................................
PERFORMANCE
Unique test programme
The performance of the Sunscoop Tubular
Rooflight system has been firmly established
by a unique and extensive period of testing,
unparalleled in the tubular rooflight
industry, carried out by Silsoe Research
Institute (SRI) and BPD. Measurements were
taken over four to six month periods during
the summer/ autumn in all natural light
conditions ranging from bright clear skies to
overcast conditions.
Internal view of different
diameter tubular
rooflights under test
This comprehensive monitoring has for the
first time provided accurate, realistic and
reliable performance data for tubular
rooflight systems including direct and
diffuse lighting conditions.
The research is subject of a published paper
entitled ‘Optimisation & design of ducted
daylight systems: 2010’ which is specific to
Glidevale systems only.
External lux sensor with
shade ring for measuring
diffused light levels
Typical light levels
The light output from the Sunscoop system
depends on the size and length of tubing,
offset angles if any, the external sky
conditions and light levels measured in lux.
The distribution of the light in the room
depends on the diffuser type and the wall,
ceiling and floor reflectances.
A sophisticated in house computer
programme has since been developed to
accurately predict light levels of Sunscoop
systems, based directly on the SRI and BPD
monitoring.
System layout
Sunscoop systems can pass through a roof
space or other void.
For maximum effectiveness the tubing
should be as straight as possible. However,
since it is often impractical to site the ceiling
diffuser directly below the roof-mounted
glazing, the tubing system allows an offset
by means of an elbow. It is adjustable up to
30º from vertical.
Other elbows can be used but monitoring
has shown that these will adversely affect
performance.
Siting
Where possible the roof-mounted glazing
should be located on a south-facing slope to
gain the maximum amount of daylight
under both direct and diffuse conditions.
Factors which need to be considered when
siting a Sunscoop include:
Monitoring of three
tubular rooflights
simultaneously
- Location of the room to be lit and suitable
position of the ceiling diffuser.
- Roof space obstructions.
- Proximity of other buildings, trees etc,
which may cast shadows at certain times
of the day or year.

Tubes and elbows
Tubes and elbows are anodised aluminium
with a multi-layer specular coating which
ensures pure white light with no colour
shift, even after multiple reflections down
the light tube / shaft. The material called
SR98 Mirror incorporates a pure super silver
layer and has a total reflectance of 98%.
Anodised aluminium base material
Bonding layer
Both have a 10-year warranty (supported by
the polycarbonate manufacturer) against
loss of impact strength, excessive yellowing
and loss of light transmission.
Pure super silver or pure aluminium layer
Super reflective (LR) oxide layer
Super reflective (HR) oxide layer
The warranty also covers any effects of the
forming process. Not all manufacturers offer
this warranty.
Polycarbonate secondary glazing is also
available to maximise insulation levels along
with the use of tube insulation (supplied
separately).
The multi-layer optical coating system is
atomically bonded to the substrate.
Laminated or glued reflective sheets are not
used.
It has a 25-year product warranty which
guarantees that the material will not splinter,
yellow, darken, peel off, blister, crack or
develop any other surface degradation which
could reduce overall reflectivity, even after
prolonged uv exposure. The finished materials
are electrostatically neutral and will not
attract airborne dust even during installation.

Integral electric light fitting
The Sunscoop can be supplied with an
optional integral electric light fitting (two on
450 and 530mm systems) which takes a 13W
or 20W low-energy lamp (equivalent to a
65W or 100W conventional lamp). This
avoids the need for an additional light fitting
for night-time use.
Light-attenuating dampers
Control over the light level entering the
room may be required at certain times, for
example in conference rooms, lecture
theatres, classrooms and hospital wards.
Ceiling diffusers
Circular ceiling diffuser
The standard recessed ceiling diffuser for all
tube sizes, designed to maximise light
transmission. Its translucent surface
provides privacy and spreads the light
efficiently throughout the room.
Manufactured from diffused polycarbonate
with white-capped ABS ceiling ring to hide
fixings. Also available in chrome or brass
effect finish.
The optional Sunscoop motorised lightattenuating damper provides this control; it
is actuated from a wall switch, separately
available.
Fire protection collars
In longer Sunscoop systems the tubing may
pass through an intermediate floor or ceiling
that provides fire separation. As with any
ducted system it is important that it does not
form a path for fire.
Fire protection collars providing up to 120
minutes fire resistance to BS 476: Part 20:
1987 are available for all sizes of Sunscoop
Skyview diffuser, circular
Optional for all tube sizes. The innovative
Skyview diffuser consists of a grid of fresnel
lenses which provides a wider spread of light
without excessive losses and enables the sky
to be viewed.
Tube Insulation (supplied separately)
Specifically designed to contribute to the
overall thermal performance of the system.
All exposed tubes and elbows within
unheated voids should be lagged with tube
insulation to reduce heat loss and the risk of
condensation within the tube.
Thermal insulation
Our Technical Services Department can
provide computer calculations of U-values in
different roof constructions using Sunscoop
rooflights, including the use of secondary
glazing skins and/or tube insulation, to
comply with Building Regulations Part L
2010.
Skyview diffuser, square
Optional for 450mm and 530mm tube only.
Similar to the circular Skyview but mounted
in a 600 x 600mm polycarbonate panel
which can be fitted in a suspended ceiling.

T
he Glidevale Sunscoop iPSV™ system is
designed to provide both natural daylight
and ventilation to bathrooms, toilets,
kitchens, en suites and other similar areas,
in both domestic and commercial
applications.
Natural daylight enters through a roofmounted glazing unit and is reflected down
the highly reflective tubing through
a Skyview ceiling diffuser. This innovative
diffuser consists of a grid of fresnel lenses
which provides a wider spread of light
without excessive losses and enables the sky
to be viewed.
Ventilation is controlled by the ‘intelligent’
extract operated by a series of nylon bands,
which respond to humidity levels and
regulate the size of the air opening.
TT9 Versatile tile ventilator
Utilising a separate ducting system allows
optimum performance from both units - the
shortest possible length to maximise natural
daylight through the ceiling diffuser and a
separate duct for the extract to optimum
length for the stack effect.

Key features
● No electrical connection or power source
is required so the system is naturally
energy efficient.
Intelligent humidity controlled extract
responds automatically to changes in
relative humidity giving greater
ventilation when humidity is high whilst
preventing unnecessary ventilation and
heat loss when humidity is low.
● 24 hour condensation control with gentle
extraction - operates all day and every day
as required combating condensation and
mould growth.
● Completely silent in operation.
● Complies with the requirements of
Approved Document F.
● Minimal maintenance - no mechanical
components to go wrong. No costly solar
panels or battery backups.
● Automatic response and no operating

Thermal insulation
The insulated upstand and double or triple
skin glazing, with vented air gap, give good
thermal insulation and minimise the risk of
condensation.
The overall calculated U-value for a 600 x
600mm unit with triple glazing and upstand
is 1.99W/m2K.
Glidevale Technical Services Department can
provide computer calculations of U-values
for given rooflight sizes in different flat roof
constructions to comply with Building
Regulations Part L 2010. The calculated
U value will vary with the size of rooflight,
due to the changing ratios of upstand,
glazing and frame area.
METRODOME ROOF ACCESS HATCH
Internal and external fire spread (B2/B4)
The internal surfaces of the rooflight
upstand and frame are non combustible and
would achieve a Class 1Y rating when tested
to BS 476: Part 7: 1987.
Polycarbonate glazing a minimum of 3.0mm
thick with a Class 1 rating is deemed by
Building Regulations Approved Document
B4 to be rated AA.
Metrodome rooflights can therefore be used
without restriction on size or spacing in all
types of room and circulation space, except
protected stairways.
Weather resistance
Metrodome rooflights are deluge and driving
rain resistant as demonstrated by test.
Non-fragility
Metrodome rooflights meet the highest level
of impact resistance (1200 joules) to draft
standard BS EN 1873 in BRE tests, and may
be considered non-fragile under the latest
guidelines of HSG33 ‘Health and safety in
roof work’.
Description
Metrodome Roof Hatches provide access to a
roof from inside a building. The construction
is similar to the standard rooflight but the
top opens to 90° and is supported by twin
‘slip and stick’ gas struts. Tops are available
either glazed or insulated aluminium.

SITEWORK
Handling and storage
To reduce the risk of damage, all Metro
rooflights are delivered to site shrinkwrapped in polythene with additional corner
and glazing protection. All rooflights must
be handled with care, particularly when
hoisting them onto the roof. Store out of
direct sunlight on a dry area, on edge, with
separating pieces between. Never stack
rooflights on top of each other.
Maintenance
Maintenance is not normally required
beyond occasional cleaning of glazing. Use
mild non-alkaline detergent and plenty of
water; take care to minimise surface
scratching which is inevitable with all
plastics.
