TOKISTAR LIGHTING
Advantage Systems
F
or years, lighting professionals have relied
on Advantage Systems from Tokistar ® to
provide their clients with the most attractive,
efficient and durable form of decorative
indirect lighting.
Advantage’s flexible conductors conform
precisely to curves, twists and turns. Since
the flexing is on the cable, lamps remain firmly
seated in their sockets. With its many unique
features, Advantage produces uniform light
from more distant socket spacing. This means
the system costs less to install, operate and
maintain.
Advantage can be specified in many
different configurations. Light
sources include LEDs in 2400K
and 3000K, and the choice of five
xenon lamps. We also offer shielded
systems, including a tube guard
to make Advantage suitable for
outdoor use.

Light Sources
S
electing the light source is the first step in tailoring an
Advantage System to a specific design task. We offer
seven light sources, and one of these is sure to get the job
done right.
Advantage was originally designed for use with rigid-loop
xenon lamps, and for very good reason. These lamps evenly
distribute light in all directions,
and their frosted envelope casts
a smooth glow of light without
filament images.
Xenon lamps also produce a warm and inviting color of light. With life ratings up to 20,000 hours, they are
perfectly suited to commercial applications where lamps are operated continuously. In addition to our xenon
lamps, we offer 2400K and 3000K LED modules for use in new and existing Advantage systems.
LED Modules
A
dvantage LED modules consume only 0.72 Watts
each, making them the most efficient of all light
sources. They do an outstanding job of emulating true
incandescent light. Each LED module has on-board
circuitry enabling it to operate from 24 VAC magnetic
transformers. This allows you to take complete control
of the environment and operate our LEDs from
standard low-voltage dimming systems.
To optimize operating life, each module is packaged
in a porcelain base to absorb and dissipate heat away
from the LED. This also means Advantage LEDs may
be specified in heat-sensitive applications you may have
avoided in the past. Since these solid-state devices have
no filaments, vibration will not cause them to fail.
0.72 Watt 2400K LED
These 0.72 Watt LED modules are highly energy
efficient and are for use with all socket spacings.
They are not for use with symmetrical reflectors.

Design Guidelines
Quality indirect lighting requires a seamless
flow of light. Proper spacing between sockets
is the key factor in achieving this goal. Surface
finish also has an influence. A matte white finish
inside the cove and on the reflective surface is
best. A glossy surface will reflect lamp images,
no matter how closely the sockets are spaced.
Socket Spacing
Recommended socket spacing varies,
depending on how close the fixture is
positioned from the reflective surface.
Maintain the minimum distances shown
to eliminate socket shadows and hot
spots. More lamps will produce more light, but
they will not always produce more uniform light.
Recommended Spacing Guide
D = Distance to surface
S = Socket spacing

S
The following are some of the most popular
applications of Advantage, including helpful tips on how
different variations can produce the best results:
Cove Lighting
Where Advantage is placed
inside a cove will produce
different effects. If the
fixture is placed close to
the cove fascia, it will trap
more light in the cove and
create a sharper contrast
of light. Positioning the
fixture closer to the wall
will illuminate more of the
ceiling and create a softer
gradation of light.

Under Counter Lighting
When positioned under a countertop,
Advantage will produce a soft glow of
light on the wall behind it. To prevent
direct contact with lamps, consider s
ifying our AV-LNS lens covers.
Wall Washing
Advantage’s small configuration makes
it an ideal source for illuminating from
within niches and behind cornices. For
more impact, consider specifying our
symmetrical reflectors to concentrate
more light in a focused direction.
Showcase/Shelf Lighting
Advantage may be used
to softly illuminate fine
art and other artifacts.
Fixtures may be placed
under shelves or
positioned vertically at
either side of a cabinet.
To direct and conceal
light, consider specifying
our asymmetrical
reflectors.
Under Cabinet Lighting
Fixtures may be
positioned behind
the lips of cabinets to
direct light down onto
a countertop. If the
fixture requires shielding,
consider specifying an
Advantage Shielded
Channel with continuous
lens cover.

Before deciding on the finished
product, it is important to note
that not all light sources can be
used with all options. Take into
account these guidelines:
• Due to the surface temperature of lamps, our 8.5 Watt and cool white lamps are not for use with AV-LNS lens covers, AV Shielded
Channels or Series AVO.
• Symmetrical and asymmetrical reflectors are not for use with AV-LNS lens covers, AV Shielded Channels or Series AVO.
• LED modules do not emit light from below, so there is no symmetrical reflector option with this light source.
• Fixtures with 2.4” socket spacing are not for use in AV Shielded
Channels or Series AVO.
• Refer to page 11 for minimum distances to be maintained between fixtures and combustible surfaces.
The basic system includes lamp sockets with

Maximum Fixture Length
The maximum load of each fixture must not exceed 480 Watts (20 amps @ 24 Volts).
In addition to this limitation, consideration
must be given to the affects of voltage
drop. Fixtures with lower wattage lamps
(such as LEDs) and more distant socket
spacing have recommended maximum
lengths less than 480 Watts. Conforming
to the lengths in this chart ensures no
fixture exceeds 480 Watts and will not
be subjected to excessive voltage drop.

Installation Guidelines
Basic System
Each Advantage socket is provided with four
mounting holes. For secure mounting, use two
screws in opposing holes.
3”, 4” and 6” socket spacing
Seamless Light
Connectors can be offset so that socket
spacing is not interrupted at feed locations.
Advantage fixtures are flexible
enough to turn corners without the
use of special hardware, eliminating
any dark spots at corner locations.
2.4” socket spacing
AV-MC Mounting Channel
Attach the mounting channel securely in place with screws.
Insert one side of socket under the lip of the mounting
channel, then snap the socket in place.
The mounting channel is flexible in one direction and will
conform to a 24” radius with lamps facing into or away from
the bend.
Heat Consideration
In accordance with NEC/NFPA 70 Article 410.11,
combustible materials next to the fixtures must not be
subjected to temperatures in excess of 90º C (194º F).
In order to conform to this standard, fixtures need to
be installed according to the minimum space
requirements shown below.
Xenon lamps produce heat and may cause harm
if they come in direct contact with persons or
combustible materials. If fixtures are positioned
where these conditions can occur, Advantage
should always be specified with the appropriate
lens cover to prevent harm.

Advantage Lighting Systems are ETL Listed.
Ratings are based upon the manufacturer’s published
life data. Life of xenon sources is determined by
the industry standard Mean Time Before Failure
(MTBF) method, defined as the time when 50% of
lamps fail. With our LED source, life is defined as
the time when lumen output depreciates to 70% of
its initial value. Actual lifetime may vary based upon
environmental conditions.
