In specifying and applying GMR products, supplemental data is often required to
develop accurate specifications and ensure that the most suitable product is selected.
The reference material presented here is intended to assist in that pursuit.
Our aim in this section is to address specific questions that are frequently raised when
specifying and purchasing interior fire equipment. We do not claim to offer a
comprehensive study of hose and standpipe systems and related equipment. There is a
wealth of reference material available from well regarded sources that may be used as a
guideline, and we encourage you to take advantage of those sources. For your
convenience we have listed a number of them on page A12.
GMR recognizes the authority having jurisdiction and recommends the standards they
set relating to the products described in this catalog.

A2
Cabinet Materials & Trim Styles
Semi-Recessed – Used where the wall is too
shallow to accept a completely recessed
cabinet. A portion of the box projects beyond
the finished wall. The cabinet trim surrounds
the box, and returns to the finished wall,
concealing the wall cut-out. The trim projection
occupies a portion of the traffic area. This type
of mounting increases visibility of the cabinet.
When the trim projection is 4" or less this style
meets the requirements of the Americans with
Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990.
Cabinet Material
Steel – The most widely used material.
Regularly furnished with a white polyester
powder coat that may be used as a prime or
finish coating. Steel will accept any color to
achieve the desired architectural effect, and
has the added practical advantage of being the
least expensive material available.
Aluminum – The natural brushed appearance
of aluminum provides a visually appealing
installation. A clear anodized finish is standard,
with various color options available. Aluminum
is a good choice when added corrosion
resistance is required at a moderate cost.
Surface Mount – Used primarily in remodeling
situations or commercial/industrial applications.
The cabinet is secured to the finished wall
surface or independently suspended.
Corner Mounting – This is a variation of
surface mounting. The cabinet is constructed
with a triangular box that fits into a corner
location, making maximum use of the available
space. The cabinet is secured to the finished
wall in the same manner as surface mount
cabinets. This type of mounting is available only
on our 13400 series fire extinguisher cabinets.
Stainless Steel – Provides superior corrosion
resistance. Often specified where appearance
is a consideration. The standard finish is a No.
4 brushed finish.
Cabinet Trim Styles
Cabinet trim style, or mounting, is determined
by several variables including wall depth,
construction material, finished wall material,
cabinet location, and piping arrangement. The
following styles are available:
Free Standing – This is also a variation of
surface mounting. The cabinet is furnished with
a provision for free standing installation, which
may consist of legs or a fabricated steel base.
The height and method of securing the cabinet
to the mounting pad are determined on a caseby-case basis.
Recessed – This is the most widely used
mounting style where available wall depth and
the piping arrangement will accommodate the
complete cabinet. The flat trim neatly conceals
the wall cut-out and provides minimal intrusion
into traffic areas.
Trimless – This is a variation of recessed
mounting, used where flush installation with the
finished wall is required. Available wall depth
must accommodate the complete cabinet plus
door & trim. A ¾” plaster flange is provided in
place of the standard trim. The cabinet must be
installed as a complete unit with trim behind the
finished wall.
A3
Cabinet Door Styles
The most suitable door style for any given
cabinet is usually determined by its location.
For example, a cabinet located in the corridor of
an office building or hospital in many cases
would have a full glass door. However, that
same door style would not be practical in a
parking garage or college dormitory. The
authority having jurisdiction should be
consulted if there is any doubt as to the proper
door style. In many instances there is no code
requirement, and the architect or owner will
determine the door style that is used.
Safety Lock – This option may be combined
with any of the preceding door styles for a
secure, tamper-resistant installation. Specifying
the safety lock feature provides a keyed-alike
cylinder lock with break off tab. Opening the
door requires only a sharp tug on the pull
handle. Casual tampering or vandalism is
effectively discouraged, while allowing full
access to fire safety equipment when needed.
Note: “Traditional” break glass style doors with
single strength breakable glass panels have
been discontinued effective March 1, 2006 and
are no longer available.
The following information may be used as a
guide to assist the specifier in selecting the
most suitable cabinet door style.
Glazings – The standard glazing on all door
styles, with the exception of solid panel, is clear
.06" acrylic.
Full Glass – This style is generally used in
private businesses, hotels, and other locations
where the general public’s access is limited and
traffic is light. The full glass opening allows
easy identification of the cabinet’s contents.
Numerous optional glazings are available to
achieve nearly any desired architectural effect.
These include:
Solid Panel – Used where complete
concealment of the cabinet’s contents is
desired. The door is flush with the trim,
providing a flat, uninterrupted appearance.
Specifying this door style with heavier gauge
construction and institutional locks provides
added security in prisons, mental institutions,
and similar facilities.
Duo Panel – This door style is a popular
alternative to full glass. One third (a) of the
door has a glass opening to allow identification
of the cabinet’s contents; the remaining twothirds ( b) of the door is flush solid metal. The
glass opening can be positioned horizontally in
the upper portion of the door, or centered top to
bottom. The opening can also be positioned
vertically. Note: Doors with horizontal
opening in the upper position are not
reversible. Left hand or right hand hinging
must be specified when ordering.

Variations & Identification
Double Doors – This allows access to either
the hose rack unit or fire extinguisher
individually when specified on 14400, 14500, or
14600 series cabinets. This variation also
reduces the radius of door swing into the
corridor.
Variations
Our standard cabinets can be modified to
include any number of variations. Some of them
are described here. Please note that not all
features can be combined.
Concealed Hinge – Provides complete
concealment of the cabinet trim and hinge by
means of an oversized door. This variation is
used most often with solid panel or vertical duo
panel doors. When the door is closed the only
part of the cabinet that is visible is the door,
giving the illusion that the cabinet has been
“hung” on the wall rather than recessed into it.
Contact GMR for submittal and detail sheets.
Duplex Construction – This variation provides
access to the cabinet from both sides of a wall
or partition. A second door & trim is provided,
and the box is custom built to match available
wall depth. The knockout location(s) must be
specified at the time of ordering.
Horizontal Fold – Used to provide storage of
single jacket rubber lined hose without the need
for a rack or reel. Retaining panels and a
curved hose bed are used to hold the hose in
place in the cabinet and allow quick deployment
when needed.
The variations described represent only a few
of the special features we can provide. In may
cases we can modify one of our standard
products to meet your requirements. If not, we
can fabricate cabinets from your drawings or
we will work with you to develop a working
design for a custom cabinet that will meet your
particular needs.
Weatherproofing – Generally used with
surface mount cabinets that are installed in
exposed locations. The door jamb is provided
with a self-adhesive synthetic rubber gasket
and a rainhood is installed over the door to
direct rainfall away from the cabinet.
Identification
Our standard cabinet identification is a wetapplication decal or self-adhesive vinyl label
with red lettering as appropriate (“FIRE
EXTINGUISHER”, “FIRE HOSE”, etc. etc.). A
number of optional identification techniques are
available, including:
Louvers – Provides ventilation for cabinets
installed outdoors. These are normally located
on the sides of the cabinets, but may also be
located on the door. Louvers can be provided
with screens inside the cabinets to discourage
the entry of insects and debris. Vents and/or
weep holes can also be provided.
•
Vinyl Lettering
Special Cabinet Depth – Used when standard
cabinet depth cannot accommodate required
equipment. A setup charge plus a price add-on
per inch of added depth applies. Specify depth
required and knockout locations.

of door style and locking feature is
prohibited by most authorities having
jurisdiction.

Fire Hose Storage Devices
GMR offers a complete selection of fire hose
storage devices, including racks, reels, and
hangers. Each type of storage device is
designed for use with specific types of fire
hose, and hoses are not always
interchangeable. For example, double jacket
hose will not work on a pin rack; neither will
hose designed for continuous flow hose reels.
The chart below may be used as a guideline in
selecting the most suitable combination of fire
hose and hose storage device.
Hose Storage Device
Important Note: Continuous flow hose reels
are sometimes used to store flat-folding hose.
In those instances, all hose must be removed
from the reel before the hose valve is opened.
Failure to do so will result in damage to the reel
and will void our warranty.

Fire Hose Test Pressures
Fire hoses are subjected to various pressure
tests to determine their reliability. Hose is
frequently identified by its proof test pressure,
also known as acceptance test pressure. Proof
test pressures are indicated for all fire hoses in
this catalog, except as noted. With the
exception of non-collapsible hose, all hose is
marked with its service test pressure as per
NFPA 1961 requirements.
Note: Non-collapsible hose is rated according
to standards established by the Rubber
Manufacturers Association (RMA), which
involve measurements of working pressure and
bursting pressure. For this type of hose, the
maximum working pressure is 25% of the
minimum bursting pressure. For example, a
hose rated for a 150 PSI working pressure will
have a minimum bursting pressure of 600 PSI.
This a commonly expressed as a “4:1 safety
factor” (600 ÷ 150 = 4). Maximum working
pressure is indicated for all non-collapsible
hose shown in this catalog.
The chart below shows typical proof test ratings
for our flat folding fire hoses and the
corresponding maximum working pressure,
service test pressure, and burst test pressure.

Fire Hose Friction Loss
When water flows through fire hose, there is
always a loss of pressure. This pressure loss is
created by the friction between the moving
water and the lining of the fire hose, as well as
friction between the water particles.

Hose House Equipment
GMR’s outdoor hose and hydrant houses are
designed for installation adjacent to or over a
fire hydrant, and will accommodate a complete
selection of approved equipment. Several
factors, including the type of hazard and the
authority having jurisdiction will govern the
selection of equipment.
The two most common lists of equipment that
conform to insurance requirements are
published by Industrial Risk Insurers (IRI) and
Factory Mutual (FM). These lists are
reproduced below.

Sizes and quantity of hose depends on local authority having jurisdiction.
FM’s only requirement is that a sufficient number of playpipes for conducting tests be provided. Consult
with the local authority having jurisdiction.
These items are not required by IRI or FM, but are frequently required by the local authority having
jurisdiction.

Glossary
Adapter – Any device that allows fire hose
couplings to be interconnected with couplings
of different sizes, threads, or mating surfaces.
Double Jacket – A hose construction
consisting of two woven jackets over a
synthetic lining.
Angle Valve – A type of globe valve used
primarily as a hose valve.
Dry Chemical – A mixture of fine powders that
extinguishes fire by interfering with the
combustion chain reaction.
Booster Hose – A hose having a rubber tube,
a braided or spiral reinforcement, and an outer
protective cover. Normally used on continuous
flow hose reels.
Dry Standpipe – A standpipe system designed
to have piping containing water only when the
system is in use.
Burst Pressure – The pressure at which hose
ruptures.
Fire Department Connection – A connection
through which the fire department can pump
water into a sprinkler or standpipe system.
Cabinet – An enclosure, usually constructed of
steel, that contains hose rack assemblies,
Class I, II, or III fire department valves, fire
extinguishers, or various combinations of these.
Fire Extinguisher – A portable device
containing an extinguishing agent that can be
expelled under pressure for the purpose of
extinguishing a fire.
Carbon Dioxide – Gaseous extinguishing
agent that extinguishes fire by displacing
oxygen.
Fire Hose – A flexible conduit constructed with
one or more woven jackets and an approved
nonpermeable lining.
Check Valve – A valve designed to prevent
reverse water flow.
Fire Hydrant – A connection to a water main
for the purpose of supplying water to fire hoses
or other fire protection apparatus. Also see Wall
Hydrant.
Class A Fires – Fires in ordinary combustible
materials, such as wood, cloth, paper, rubber,
and many plastics.
Flow Rate – A volume of fluid per unit of time
passing a given cross-section of a flow passage
in a given direction.
Class B Fires – Fires in flammable liquids, oils,
greases, tars, oil-base paints, lacquers, and
flammable gases.
Class C Fires – Fires that involve energized
electrical equipment.
Friction Loss – Pressure loss caused by
friction between moving water and the interior
surface of a hose or pipe.
Class D Fires – Fires in combustible metals,
such as magnesium, titanium, zirconium,
sodium, lithium, and potassium.
Gate Valve – A straightway valve with a wedge
disc designed for use as an isolating or end-ofline hose valve.
Coupling – One set/pair of connection devices
attached to a fire hose that allows the hose to
be interconnected to other hoses or fire fighting
appliances.
Gauge – Thickness of the steel used to
manufacture cabinets. The lower the gauge, the
thicker the material.
A14
Glossary
Globe Valve – A straightway or angle-pattern
valve with a soft seating surface designed for
use as a hose valve.
Pressure Restricting Device – A valve or
device that reduces downstream water
pressure under residual (flowing) conditions
only.
Hose House – An enclosure located over or
adjacent to a hydrant or other water supply,
designed to contain hose, nozzles, and tools for
use by fire fighting personnel.
Proof Test – A non-destructive test applied to
fire hose to determine its reliability. Proof test
pressure is double the service test pressure.
Hose Nozzle – A device intended for
discharging water for manual suppression or
extinguishment of a fire.
Reducer – See adapter.
Service Test – A test in which the fire hose is
tested under actual working conditions.
Hose Rack – A device used to store folded fire
hose.

outside of a wall of a building, fed from interior
piping, for the purpose of supplying water to fire
hoses.
Monitor Nozzle – A device specifically
designed with a large, clear waterway to
provide a powerful, far-reaching stream.
Wet Standpipe – A standpipe system having
piping containing water at all times.
Nipple – See adapter.
Polymer Coating – A protective coating
applied to woven jacket fire hose in liquid form.
Pressure Regulating Device – A valve or
device that reduces downstream water
pressure under static (non-flowing) and residual
(flowing) conditions.
