USE EXTREME CAUTION. The following procedure is intended to aid in
the reloading of software for the Agilent Technologies family of
ChemStation products and involves the modification of Windows® system
files and renaming of the current ChemStation application subdirectory.

Warning:
USE EXTREME CAUTION. Improper modification of System Files file can result
in a failure of your system to initialize properly.
It is recommended you make a backup of your entire system, but minimally a
copy of your system files (AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS and WIN.INI), prior to
performing the procedures outlined in this document
Note: The system file backup procedures listed below require a formatted
floppy disk be present in the floppy drive.
Windows® 95 / Windows NT® System File Backup Procedure
WIN.INI Backup Procedure
1. From the Windows® TaskBar select the Start button
2. From the Start menu select Find
3. From the Find menu select Files or Folders
4. Drop down the Look In selections and select My Computer
5. In the Named field enter WIN.INI
6. Select the Find Now button
7. In the results display table, <click> on the WIN.INI file
8. Pull down the File menu and select Send To
9. From the Send To menu select 3 ½ Floppy (A)
10. In the Find: All Files panel pull down the File menu and select Close
AUTOEXEC.BAT Backup Procedure
1. From the Windows® TaskBar select the Start button
2. From the Start menu select Find
3. From the Find menu select Files or Folders
4. Drop down the Look In selections and select My Computer
5. In the Named field enter AUTOEXEC.BAT
6. Select the Find Now button
7. In the results display table, <click> on the AUTOEXEC.BAT file
8. Pull down the File menu and select Send To
9. From the Send To menu select 3 ½ Floppy (A)
10. In the Find: All Files panel pull down the File menu and select Close

1. From the Windows® TaskBar select the Start button
2. From the Start menu select Find
3. From the Find menu select Files or Folders
4. Drop down the Look In selections and select My Computer
5. In the Named field enter CONFIG.SYS
6. Select the Find Now button
7. In the results display table, <click> on the CONFIG.SYS file
8. Pull down the File menu and select Send To
9. From the Send To menu select 3 ½ Floppy (A)
10. In the Find: All Files panel pull down the File menu and select Close
Record current ChemStation license numbers

6. Select the OK button on the panel
Obtain a hard copy of the current ChemStation configuration(s)

From the Start menu select Programs
From the Programs menu select HP ChemStations
From the HP ChemStations menu select HP Configuration Editor
Pull down the File menu and select Print
Select All Instruments and then the OK button on the panel
Pull down the File menu and select Exit
Disable ALL Virus Scanning Applications
Past experiences has shown that virus scanning applications can cause corruption of
the ChemStation software during installation. Therefore, it is recommended that they
be disabled prior to ChemStation software installation. The following procedure is for
the McAfee virus scanning application shipped with the bundled ChemStation Windows
NT 4.0 systems. Disabling the virus scanning application on your system may be
different – consult your virus scanning application documentation for the exact
procedure.
1. On the Windows NT® Task Bar (next to the system time) <right click> on the
following ICON and select the Disable function.
Modify the WIN.INI file to rename PCS sections
Warning:

11. Change the characters PCS to ABC
12. Select the Find Next button or pull down the Search menu and select Next
13. Repeat steps 10 ! 12 above until message "cannot find PCS" appears
13. Pull down the File menu and select Save
14. Pull down the File menu and select Exit
15. In the Find: All Files panel pull down the File menu and select Close
Rename ChemStation application subdirectory

In the Named field enter HPCHEM
Select the Find Now button
Record below the full PATH to the HPCHEM subdirectory (i.e. C:\HPCHEM) as
found in the search results display table

8. In the results display table, <click> on the HPCHEM subdirectory
9. Pull down the File menu and select Rename
10. Enter the name HPCHEM.OLD
11. Depress the Enter key on your keyboard
12. Pull down the File menu and select Close

Install the ChemStation software
1. Insert the ChemStation CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
2. From the Windows® TaskBar select the Start button
3. From the Start menu select Run
4. At the command line, type drive:\Setup (e.g., d:\Setup) where “d” is the drive
designation for your CD-ROM drive and select the OK button
5. In the Chemstation dialog box ChemStation Directory, enter the Path to HPCHEM
recorded above.
6. On the Chemstation dialog box, select Instrument 1and select the Add/Change
button
7. Select the instrument module software to be installed from the list in the Available
Products box and select the Add button
8. Enter the License Registration Number for the selected module in the New License
Number field and click Add
9. Click OK to accept the entries and return to the previous screen.
10. To install another module, repeat steps 6 through 9, selecting the correct
instrument number for the instrument being installed
11. Select the Install button
Configure Instruments (When prompted during installation process)
1. Select the [Instrument 1] configuration BOX
2. Pull down the Configure menu and select Instrument
3. Select the Instrument Type, as listed on the printout of your ChemStation
configuration obtained above, and select the OK button
4. Setup the instrument configuration as listed on the printout of your ChemStation
configuration obtained above.
5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 for any additional instrument BOXes displayed
6. Pull down the File menu and select Save
7. Pull down the File menu and select Exit
Restore old Data, Methods and Sequences (if required)
1. From the Windows® TaskBar select the Start button
2. From the Start menu select Find
3. From the Find menu select Files or Folders

4. Drop down the Look In selections and select My Computer
5. In the Find - Files or Folders panel Named field enter HPCHEM.OLD
6. Select the Find Now button
7. In the results display table, <double click> on the HPCHEM.OLD subdirectory
8. <double click> on the 1 subdirectory (yellow file folder)
9. < click> on the Data subdirectory (yellow file folder)
10. <Ctrl><click> (i.e. hold down the Ctrl key on the keyboard and then <click>) on
the Methods subdirectory (yellow file folder)
11. <Ctrl><click> on the Sequence subdirectory (yellow file folder)
12. Pull down the Edit menu and select Copy
13. Pull down the File menu and select Close
14. In the Find - All Files panel Named field enter HPCHEM
15. Select the Find Now button
16. In the results display table, <double click> on the HPCHEM subdirectory
17. <double click> on the 1 subdirectory (yellow file folder)
18. Pull down the Edit menu and select Paste
19. When prompted to overwrite either files or directories, select Yes or Yes to All
20. Pull down the File menu and select Close
21. Repeat steps 5 ! 20 for additional instruments, changing the 1 to the
appropriate instrument number as required.
22. In the Find: All Files panel pull down the File menu and select Close
Restore COLUMNS Information - All except 6890 Instrument sessions
Note: It is assumed that the original HPCHEM directory was renamed HPCHEM.OLD
- if not, replace the HPCHEM.OLD with the appropriate directory name utilized
1. In the ONLINE ChemStation session command line (white line at the bottom of the
ChemStation panel), enter the following, and depress the keyboard <Enter> key:
RESTORECOLUMNS “d:\HPCHEM.OLD\#\CONFIG.REG”
Where:
d = drive letter where the HPCHEM.OLD subdirectory is located
# = instrument number for the current ONLINE session
2. Repeat step 1 for each additional instrument number (#) in this installation

Copy the following files from the “d:\HPCHEM.OLD\DRIVERS” directory to the new
“d:\HPCHEM\DRIVERS” subdirectory:

Enable Virus Scanning Applications
The following procedure is for the McAfee virus scanning application shipped with the
