If there is one motorcycle in the Harley-Davidson air-cooled model line that truly deserves
the term „Muscle Bike“, it would be the FXDF
„Fat Bob“. Compact in style, one of the lowest
riding positions of all Big Twins, looking „ready
to go“ even when parked – and the trademark
dual headlight, which makes this model easy to
pinpoint in any Harley crowd. It‘s only a small
but dedicated clientele that is asking for this
model – most of which usually add plenty of
displacement or horsepower to the „Macho Machine“. For years, basically since 2006, the „Fat
Bob“ has been overshadowed by the overwhelming success of the FXDX „Street Bob“ – which
has certainly been sold in greater numbers
– but there is quite a number of FXDF‘s bobbing
around. Enough to have a 2012 model year bike
customized for the 2015 „Bolt On and Ride“ bike
pool of Custom Chrome Europe: Wheel manufacturer TTS took on the task and completely turned around the character of the „Macho Bike“!
Retro-Style is still THE hot topic in the Harley-scene, even more
in the South-European countries than in Germany – no matter
if „Old School“ Chopper, Bobber or „Stock-antique-Look“, retro
always works! And there are always new parts, new variations
and new ideas to the theme, as this year‘s „Bolt On and Ride“
Dyna underlines: Created by established wheel manufacturer
TTS for Custom Chrome Europe, the parts used in this bike
are to a great extend new designed products by TTS and
CCE. Just in time for the 2015 catalogue, the retro-styled components can „backdate“ even the modern „Twin Cam“ engines
seventy to eighty years into the past – optically.

For many Harley-fans, the „E“ and „FL“ models of 1936 to 1947
heritage remain the ultimate pinnacle of American motorcycle
design – and for years there are accessories available that
can convert Evolution and Twin Cam motors into a lookalike
„Knucklehead“ of more or less detailed status. Torsten Kröner
of TTS knows all of them, but that didn‘t discourage him to
create his own, more artistic and stylish, interpretation of the
„Knuckle“ theme and start production. A bold step of the es-
– additional power comes from optimizing the fuel injection curves of the stock EFI by utilizing the ThunderMax module. BSL
takes care of the wasted gas with the “Shotgun Baker Style”
system. The Twin Cam motor is both reliable and powerful for
a great riding experience – so there was no reason to shovel
more „coal into the fire“. BDL Belt Drives have been the „primary of choice“ for many previous BOAR customs – and the
2012 Dyna is no exception. To complete the look, gearbox and
engine cover screws have all been plated to brass/gold style
finish, while the pushrod covers are darkened and remain almost invisible.
Hot TTS parts: Classic TTS „Big Spoke“ wheels are
available in numerous different designs and the superb new Knuckle Covers for „Twin Cam“
tablished wheel manufacturer in Westerkappeln to a broader
product range with greater diversification – not to forget: A cool
part! Currently available for the Twin Cam motor, the shape
of the „Knuckle“ is fatter and rounder, but still recognizable
and featuring two big bolts that held the rocker arm shafts.
The parts add a new look to the Twin Cam motor and can be
combined with a great variety of parts from other sources. At
the same time, 350 km to the south, Custom Chrome Europe
independently developed a Cam Cover for Twin Cams, that
also „borrowed“ heavily from the late „Knucklehead“ model
years from 1941 on which featured the „ribbed“ engine side
covers: Exchange for the stock part, the new CCE side cover
is a nostalgic injection to any modern „Twin Cam“ motor, no
matter if you wanna go Bobber, Old School or retro. Since both
components share the same rough aluminum finish, they combine perfectly. Both are available in „nature“ aluminum finish,
in case of the „Knight Knuckle“ also in black finish and a great
combination with Jammer‘s „Tear Drop“ air filter!

TOP: Kustom Tech is manufacturing high-class handlebar controls which look like antique. Only that in the
twenties, hydraulic controls for clutch and brake had not been developed at that time. Brass and a rough cast
look were a trademark of the pioneer motorcycles.

Although the „Knight Knuckle“ retains a surprising number of
stock components (including the fuel tank and tank dash), its
appearance has radically changed – thanks to the TTS sheet
metal workshop that has created quite a number of TTS promotion and client bikes. CCE‘s “Onetonho” metal fender was
adapted to the style and the shocks were swapped for Biltwell
„Rigid Struts“, effectively eliminating any suspension at the
rear. This gives the rides pure 40s style Harley-Feeling – rear
suspension for Hogs was introduced with the „Duo Glide“ of
1949 – but can be reversed anytime, if the LePera „Police“
single seat will not deliver the expected riding comfort.

this project“, smiles Torsten Kröner at the introduction of the
2015 „Bolt On and Ride“ Dyna during CCE‘s „Open House“
on March 21st in Grolsheim, „they bridge the gap between old
and new school – and they are fitting numerous different custom styles.“

„Big Spoke“ wheels by TTS are manufactured to order and
will be taylor-made for the client, allowing for a great variation
in colour and design combinations at all common wheel sizes.
TTS wheels with their massive and huge „monster spokes“ are
popular with many German customizers – thanks to the TÜVapproved quality – and the inherent durability of the product.
TTS wheels often last longer than the bike projects they were
originally built for. When it comes to extremes: Their 720-spoke rear wheel is still the „world record“ holder – and on request, TTS will even gold-plate the spokes!

and more of Harley model-lines are equipped with the modern
form of automotive cable system named CAN-BUS a.k.a. “HDLAN”. Originally developed for the car industry, where the minimization of cable trees and cable diameters to save weight
makes more sense than on a motorcycle, the „side effect“ of
using „encoded“ signals from the switches to the control unit,
which in turn switches the „strong“ currents to e.g. head-, tailand break light is, that these internal communication system
signals also prohibited replacement of components like the
handlebar control switches. CANIOX has been developed to
overcome this problem and to enable you to use custom handlebar controls. And it works! Dakota Digital‘s „Plug-in“ speedo
for CAN-Bus models made a great addition too.

Riding the „Knight Knuckle“ through the 2015 season will however be limited to „Prussian Guard sized“ riders: As low as the
seating position remained, it is a long way from the seat to the
forward mounted CCE foot controls. Long legs are essential
to avoid the hot exhausts and reach around the massive stock

The paintjob, executed by Sandra Milovanovic of Mach Art Customs, adds much of the character to this bike. The frame was
completely powder coated and the basic layer of paint on the
body parts was followed by covering all parts with a full layer
of silver leaf. Only then was the paintjob appealed in all detail.
The compass rose signals it: This is a bike for discoverers. To
discover how much riding fun a retro-styled Dyna can offer.

2015 SHOOTING IN GRIMAUD
Following up the highly successful and funny „Sexy Thing“ Video clip of August 2014, the 2015 follow-up video clip became one of the most ambitious
projects ever undertaken by any European customparts distributor/manufacturer. Again Marcus „Kalle“ Arnoldy, specialist for music video clips was
asked to direct and film again, no less than 6 (!) „Bolt On and Ride“ bikes
were shipped to South France, where filming took place in the middle of the
huge Harley-Davidson Festival Grimaud which now stretches into neighbouring communities like Saint Tropez and Cogolin. For the latter, CCE booked the up-and-coming German rock-band „Ruby Shock“ to perform „live“ in
Cogolin. The band was „discovered“ by CCE‘s Managing Director Andreas
Scholz, with their song „This is (the way it could be)“ fitting both the theme of
customizing and women taking a seat directly at the handlebar!

A huge stock of rims awaits production.
One of the „innovators“ of the German customizing scene, TTS has
been a long established wheels manufacturer, known worldwide for
their solid and reliable „big spoke“ wheels, which are available in most
common – and often extreme – sizes for stock exchange or one-off
custombikes. The record-braking 720-spoke rear wheel is still sitting
in the showroom, but it is the long-lasting reliability, that often make
the owners keep the wheels rather than the bikes! The TTS team has
developed the highly specialized knowledge and skills to manufacture
the wheels, but recently the team has also diversified into new fields.
Their casted „Knuckle-Style“ head covers were of course inspired
by HD‘s classic 1936 heads of the first OHV model, but mount to the
modern Twin Cam tops instead. And there is more to come!

Retro-fitting the Dyna
Shocks are still mounted.
During the visit at TTS in Westerkappeln, 3 months before the bike was
to be delivered, the dedicated TTS was caught „in Action“ modifying and
customizing the 2012 „Fat Bob“ Dyna. The early stages saw the TTS
wheel adaption in full swing and the tailend already under construction.
The strutting of the metal fender is ready to be mounted – the fender is
mounted to the swingarm, which later was set „rigid“ by substituting the
stock shocks with Biltwell „rigid struts“.
Subsequently, engine and gearbox were taken out of the frame and
the frame completely powder-coated. Since the new CCE „Cam Cover“
has not yet been available, the 103 Cubic Inch Twin Cam still in stock
setup. To adapt the Kustom-Tech switches to the stock electric system,
the Caniox Module for Can-Bus was used. The low riding look already
defined, there is still a lot of work to be performed!
