With 19 golfers on the team and a lot of experience, Sidney Red Raiders golf team will be
looking to finish in the top spots in the big tournaments this year.
Head coach Chuck
Christensen said no
other team in their district will have the depth
the Red Raiders do.
Christensen has been
a part of Sidney Boys'
Golf for 11 years. Two
of the years he spent as
the assistant coach, the
other nine he has served
as the head coach.
Christensen credits
the strong junior program at Hillside Golf
yan irner
Course for developing
Sidney’s young golfers
and instilling an interest and love for the
game at an early age.
Christensen said his large roster will allow
him to get several members of his team play
time this year.
“We will be rotating kids in and out of tournaments,” Christensen said.
Kids are limited to the number of tournaments they can compete in, so the depth will
help.
“They can only play in nine meets,”
Christensen said.
Not only is the roster large, there is a lot of
returning experience on the team.
Christensen said there are three seniors
returning this year. Garret Wamsley, Ryan
Birner and Brady Radcliffe have all been starters throughout their high school careers.
Junior Nate Dvorak has a lot of experience,
too.
At the sophomore level Connor Dormann and
Jake Burke also have a lot of experience.
“Connor (Dormann) will more than likely be a
number one or two this year,” Christensen said.
As for goals this year, the expectations are
high. Christensen said the team’s focus will not
be on the smaller tournaments as much as it
will be on the big three – districts, conference
and of course, state.
Christensen said Scottsbluff has historically
been the team to beat; however, he is confident
his team will be competing at a high level at the
conference meet.
“If the kids play like they are capable of
we will contend at conference and districts,”
Christensen said.
According to the coach they are shooting for
top 3 finishes at both.
As for state, he is shooting for a top five finish.
But, as he says, he doesn’t want to put the
cart before the horse and plans to take the top
three one at a time.
“We should be competitive at every meet, at
conference, and at districts,” Christensen said.
The Red Raiders kicked off their season on
Tuesday, March 22, at the North Platte Golf
Invite.

Experience key for Storm heading into season
JOHN VERSER
PUBLISHER@SUNTELEGRAPH.COM
Creek Valley will rely on its upper classmen as
the Storm seeks a state bid in 2016.
Of the eight-member team, there are four
juniors and one sophomore.
Having that experience will help, said Storm
golf coach Cyd Hanson.
"All those kids, the ones back from last year,
they've had some experience and that's helpful,"
she said. "You're more comfortable, going into
that course it's not going in blind. They're kind
of familiar with what things to avoid, and that
helps."
Brett Godfrey, a junior who made the state
tournament as an individual last year, said having
that experience helps. He tied for 37th at state a
year ago with a two-round total of 180.
Godfrey has been pleased with practice to this
point.

"I think it's going to be pretty well," he said. "I
hope I can make it to state this year and we go as
a team. We should do pretty well all-around."
Wyatt McMillen, the team's lone senior, also
has the same high goals for the team. McMillen
said he asked advice from other seniors in similar
leadership roles what to do in order to help the
team this season.
"I feel like, being the only senior, I took some
advice from other seniors all by themselves and
I'm going to use that this year," he said.
McMillen said the team needs to shoot better
than 380 to earn a state berth this year. McMillen
said his short game is working well so far, while
Godfrey said that is the area where he needs to
put in additional work.
Hanson said she gave members of the school's
basketball team a little extra time after that season ended, but many members of the golf team
have been getting work in before the first official
practice began.
"A lot of them came out when they didn't have
to when the weather was so nice, and they came
out and practiced on their own," she said. "I think
we're excited for the season and having all of the
kids back, for the most part, from last year. It's a
good thing. They're excited and ready to go."

Logan Sircy and Cody Wilson will be
returning to the mound for the Peetz
Bulldogs this year. The two returners will be
looked to for leadership and guidance as the
Bulldogs have a bullpen full of young but talented pitchers.
“We are going to be very young and inexperienced on the mound but have some talented
pitchers that just need to get experience,”
coach Darin Fehringer said.
The Bulldogs will be returning four starters this year. They will also be regaining a
player from injuries. Of the returners, two

Sidney Boys' Track
Meet the 2016 Lady Warriors
Reigning state champion
Sidney boys ready for 'new year'
JOHN VERSER
PUBLISHER@SUNTELEGRAPH.COM
The Sidney boys' track team picked up some hefty
hardware last spring, but Sidney coach John Ganser
said 2016 is a whole new season for the reigning state
champions.
The Raiders opened last week at the Chadron State
indoor meet, and open outdoors Thursday at home.
"It's a new season. Everything starts over," Ganser
said. "We return a good number of kids, some kids who
medaled at state last year. We were able to finish the
season really well, obviously. But, again, we start over.
Our kids know that and our coaches know that, too.
It's a whole new year."
The Raiders return six athletes who medaled at
state individually or in a relay team from a year ago.
Jake Heeren finished second in the shot put a year
ago, Alex Linneman took sixth in the 200-meter dash
and Michael Banaszak finished ninth in the 400-meter
dash. In relay events, the Sidney 3200-meter relay
team finished second and returns one starter in Logan
Uhlir. The 400-meter relay team, which finished fifth,
returns three starters in Derek Rob, Banaszak and
Linneman. The 1600-meter relay team won at state
and also returns three starters in Banaszak, Hunter
Secrest and Linneman.
"But there's some other kids that didn't make it
that I expect to see some good things from," Ganser
said. "There's a kid like Mitch Porter. He didn't qualify. He was just a freshman, he'll be a sophomore this

year. We'll see what he can do in his jumps."
"The other thing is that there's some good freshmen coming in. We're excited about our freshmen," the
coach added.
One area Ganser expects big things from this year
is in the sprints.
"If we look at the boys, we've got some good speed,"
he said. "I like what we can do in sprints. We do
return some experience in distance and mid-distance,
too. We want to be able to improve what we're doing in
the field in terms of the jumps. That's important. And
of course kids are a year older. That's always the best
thing. We're anxious to see how much improvement
they'll make in one year of their school to the next."
The coach also said his team's experience will be a
key.
"There's good experience back," Ganser said. "We
had kids that wrestled and played basketball...so
they're coming in in good shape, and our kids that
didn't, I think we had a good winter. We'll find out
here in the next few weeks."
Ganser said the team's goals include winning conference for the third consecutive season and finish the
season strong.
"Our boys have won the conference for two years in
a row," he said. "That was the first time since 1970.
Let's see if we can go after it again. Conference is big
for us. We want to do well. And, obviously, come district time, qualify as many as you can and set yourself
up for the following week. That's the main thing. You
want to finish the season the right way."

Leyton Girls' Track
Meet the 2016 Red Raiders
Lady Warriors return 9 letterwinners for 2016 season
JOHN VERSER
PUBLISHER@SUNTELEGRAPH.COM
Leyton returns a pair of state performers
and nine total letterwinners for its 2016 girls'
track season.
"Having returning state qualifiers and so
many who got thirds at the district meet last
season, we definitely have strength there,"
coach Jodi Craig said. "I am hoping they will
tell the others how exciting competing in the
state track and field championship is so they
will strive to achieve that goal. The girls’ work
ethics and persistence are assets as well."
Returning state competitors for the Lady
Warriors are senior Jessica Houk and junior
Cheyenne Nickel, who both competed in the
4x400-meter relay a year ago.
The Lady Warriors also return five seniors
and four juniors. The returning seniors include
Kristine Barnett, who returns in the 400meter dash, long jump and triple jump; Natalie
Cruise in the shot put; Katie Higgins and
Diedra Waite, both in the discus; and Houk,
who also competed in the 100- and 200-meter
dash in addition to the 4x100 and 4x400 relay
events. Houk took third in the 100-meter dash
in the district meet last year.
Juniors who return include: Taylor Berner
in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, the 100meter hurdles and the 4x100-meter relay;
Abbe Draber, who took third in the 300-meter
hurdles at the district meet last year and also
competed in the 100-meter hurdles and the
4x100-meter relay team; Hope Dykman in the
long jump and triple jump; and Nickel, who
competed in the 200- and 400-meter dashes in
addition to the 4x400-meter relay. She finished
third in the 400-meter dash at the district
meet.

Newcomers to the team include Danielle

Craig said a couple of the team's goals
this year include a top three finish at the

Sidney Girls' Track
'Good experience' back for Lady Raiders
JOHN VERSER
PUBLISHER@SUNTELEGRAPH.COM
The Sidney girls' track team returns nine athletes who participated at state a year ago and coach
John Ganser has high expectations for his team.
"There's good experience back," the coach said.
Senior Preslie Allen returns after picking up
three medals at the state meet a year ago. She finished third in the 800-meter run and fourth in the
400-meter run, in addition to being a part of a 1600meter relay team that finished seventh.
"Preslie Allen got three medals (at state) last
year," Ganser said. "She got two in the opens and
one in the relays, so huge. We kind of build our
team around her a little bit."
Also in individual events, Kelly Von Seggern
is back after competing in the 100-meter dash at
state.
Where Sidney returns plenty of experience is
in the relays. The Lady Raiders return all four of
its competitors in the 1600-meter relay team that
finished seventh at state last year. Those on that
relay include Allen, Abby Heller, Genessa Schilz
and Natalie Radcliffe. Also back is the complete
3200-meter relay team which finished 12th at
state a year ago. Those Lady Raiders are Charlie
Brockhaus, Julia Evertson, Kara Birner and
Chantal Riggs.

"We return all of our girls off a 4x8 relay. All of
our girls off the 4x4 relay, who medaled, are back,"
Ganser said. "So you're talking, besides Kelly Von
Seggern, who was on a 4x1 relay and that medaled
too, and there's two girls back off that.
"With our sprints, there's some good things there.
If you're talking girls, you'll be talking people like
Genessa Schilz, Abby Heller and Natalie Radcliffe."
The 400 meter relay also has two competitors
back in Heller and Von Seggern. That team finished
sixth at state a year ago.
"We do return a lot of lettermen and we do
return a lot of state medalists. That's a good thing,"
Ganser said. "The other thing is that there's some
good freshmen coming in. We're excited about our
freshman girls, a lot of freshman girls...In all honesty, we've got good kids. They're good to be around."
Ganser said his team's goals include winning
conference for the second straight year and getting
as many as they can qualified for state.
"Last year, our girls won the conference for the
very first time. That would be nice to repeat," he
said. "Scottsbluff is going to be really solid, but we
want to try to do that."
"I like our kids and I like our coaches. Our
coaches work hard at it and our kids work hard at
it," Ganser added. "Our whole thing is we want to
be there on time every day, work hard, have fun,
compete and win. That simple."

Creek Valley boys look to improve
PATRICK COSSEL
PCSTEVENSON@ACTACCESS.NET
With the 2016 track season underway, the Creek Valley Storm are looking to the running events as their strong events.
Coach Trevor Forte said the boys will be strong in the 800m, 1600m,
3200m and the 4x800m.
Austin Soucie (800m, 1600m), and Cooper Reichman (3200m) will be
leading the runners this year.
Forte said practice has been going well for the Storm as they are focusing on fundamentals of field events.
Much like the girls team, the boys will looking to place as many student athletes as possible at the state tournament. The boys will also be
working on improving their personal best, beating personal records and
developing techniques.

Meet the 2016 Coyotes
Potter-Dix Boys' Track
Coyotes return four state qualifiers
TONIA COPELAND
EDITOR@WESTERNNEBRASKAOBSERVER.NET
A dozen boys are out for the Potter-Dix boys'
track team, with six previous lettermen and four
returning state qualifiers – all of whom will graduate this year.
Sam Bogert qualified for the 2014-15 state competition in the 4x800 meter relay and the 4x400 relay.
Kelsey Rozelle earned a state berth for both high
jump and long jump, with Coby Hicks competing in
pole vault and the 110 hurdles and Justice Palmer
as a relay alternate.
Rounding out the boys team for the Coyotes are
juniors Tyrus Gawith and Levi Kasten, sophomores
JT Herboldsheimer, Dylan Nielsen and Connor
Williams, and freshmen Michael Steel and Cody
Spencer.
The Coyotes will be pushing very hard to try to
improve in the second place finish in the conference
meet, while they will also try to repeat as district
champs, Coyote coach Bob Hilpert said.
The coaches for this year are Hilpert, Amee
Hicks, Dale Frerichs and volunteer coach Robyn
Hicks.

Creek Valley Boys' Track

Sidney Girls' Track
'Good experience' back for Lady Raiders
JOHN VERSER
PUBLISHER@SUNTELEGRAPH.COM
The Sidney girls' track team returns nine athletes who participated at state a year ago and coach
John Ganser has high expectations for his team.
"There's good experience back," the coach said.
Senior Preslie Allen returns after picking up
three medals at the state meet a year ago. She finished third in the 800-meter run and fourth in the
400-meter run, in addition to being a part of a 1600meter relay team that finished seventh.
"Preslie Allen got three medals (at state) last
year," Ganser said. "She got two in the opens and
one in the relays, so huge. We kind of build our
team around her a little bit."
Also in individual events, Kelly Von Seggern
is back after competing in the 100-meter dash at
state.
Where Sidney returns plenty of experience is
in the relays. The Lady Raiders return all four of
its competitors in the 1600-meter relay team that
finished seventh at state last year. Those on that
relay include Allen, Abby Heller, Genessa Schilz
and Natalie Radcliffe. Also back is the complete
3200-meter relay team which finished 12th at
state a year ago. Those Lady Raiders are Charlie
Brockhaus, Julia Evertson, Kara Birner and
Chantal Riggs.

"We return all of our girls off a 4x8 relay. All of
our girls off the 4x4 relay, who medaled, are back,"
Ganser said. "So you're talking, besides Kelly Von
Seggern, who was on a 4x1 relay and that medaled
too, and there's two girls back off that.
"With our sprints, there's some good things there.
If you're talking girls, you'll be talking people like
Genessa Schilz, Abby Heller and Natalie Radcliffe."
The 400 meter relay also has two competitors
back in Heller and Von Seggern. That team finished
sixth at state a year ago.
"We do return a lot of lettermen and we do
return a lot of state medalists. That's a good thing,"
Ganser said. "The other thing is that there's some
good freshmen coming in. We're excited about our
freshman girls, a lot of freshman girls...In all honesty, we've got good kids. They're good to be around."
Ganser said his team's goals include winning
conference for the second straight year and getting
as many as they can qualified for state.
"Last year, our girls won the conference for the
very first time. That would be nice to repeat," he
said. "Scottsbluff is going to be really solid, but we
want to try to do that."
"I like our kids and I like our coaches. Our
coaches work hard at it and our kids work hard at
it," Ganser added. "Our whole thing is we want to
be there on time every day, work hard, have fun,
compete and win. That simple."

Leyton Girls' Track
Meet the 2016 Red Raiders
Lady Warriors return 9 letterwinners for 2016 season
JOHN VERSER
PUBLISHER@SUNTELEGRAPH.COM
Leyton returns a pair of state performers
and nine total letterwinners for its 2016 girls'
track season.
"Having returning state qualifiers and so
many who got thirds at the district meet last
season, we definitely have strength there,"
coach Jodi Craig said. "I am hoping they will
tell the others how exciting competing in the
state track and field championship is so they
will strive to achieve that goal. The girls’ work
ethics and persistence are assets as well."
Returning state competitors for the Lady
Warriors are senior Jessica Houk and junior
Cheyenne Nickel, who both competed in the
4x400-meter relay a year ago.
The Lady Warriors also return five seniors
and four juniors. The returning seniors include
Kristine Barnett, who returns in the 400meter dash, long jump and triple jump; Natalie
Cruise in the shot put; Katie Higgins and
Diedra Waite, both in the discus; and Houk,
who also competed in the 100- and 200-meter
dash in addition to the 4x100 and 4x400 relay
events. Houk took third in the 100-meter dash
in the district meet last year.
Juniors who return include: Taylor Berner
in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, the 100meter hurdles and the 4x100-meter relay;
Abbe Draber, who took third in the 300-meter
hurdles at the district meet last year and also
competed in the 100-meter hurdles and the
4x100-meter relay team; Hope Dykman in the
long jump and triple jump; and Nickel, who
competed in the 200- and 400-meter dashes in
addition to the 4x400-meter relay. She finished
third in the 400-meter dash at the district
meet.

Newcomers to the team include Danielle

Sidney Boys' Track
Meet the 2016 Lady Warriors
Reigning state champion
Sidney boys ready for 'new year'
JOHN VERSER
PUBLISHER@SUNTELEGRAPH.COM
The Sidney boys' track team picked up some hefty
hardware last spring, but Sidney coach John Ganser
said 2016 is a whole new season for the reigning state
champions.
The Raiders opened last week at the Chadron State
indoor meet, and open outdoors Thursday at home.
"It's a new season. Everything starts over," Ganser
said. "We return a good number of kids, some kids who
medaled at state last year. We were able to finish the
season really well, obviously. But, again, we start over.
Our kids know that and our coaches know that, too.
It's a whole new year."
The Raiders return six athletes who medaled at
state individually or in a relay team from a year ago.
Jake Heeren finished second in the shot put a year
ago, Alex Linneman took sixth in the 200-meter dash
and Michael Banaszak finished ninth in the 400-meter
dash. In relay events, the Sidney 3200-meter relay
team finished second and returns one starter in Logan
Uhlir. The 400-meter relay team, which finished fifth,
returns three starters in Derek Rob, Banaszak and
Linneman. The 1600-meter relay team won at state
and also returns three starters in Banaszak, Hunter
Secrest and Linneman.
"But there's some other kids that didn't make it
that I expect to see some good things from," Ganser
said. "There's a kid like Mitch Porter. He didn't qualify. He was just a freshman, he'll be a sophomore this
GO, FIGHT,

)LLINOIS3T3IDNEY.%

Logan Sircy and Cody Wilson will be
returning to the mound for the Peetz
Bulldogs this year. The two returners will be
looked to for leadership and guidance as the
Bulldogs have a bullpen full of young but talented pitchers.
“We are going to be very young and inexperienced on the mound but have some talented
pitchers that just need to get experience,”
coach Darin Fehringer said.
The Bulldogs will be returning four starters this year. They will also be regaining a
player from injuries. Of the returners, two
will be playing different positions.

With 19 golfers on the team and a lot of experience, Sidney Red Raiders golf team will be
looking to finish in the top spots in the big tournaments this year.
Head coach Chuck
Christensen said no
other team in their district will have the depth
the Red Raiders do.
Christensen has been
a part of Sidney Boys'
Golf for 11 years. Two
of the years he spent as
the assistant coach, the
other nine he has served
as the head coach.
Christensen credits
the strong junior program at Hillside Golf
yan irner
Course for developing
Sidney’s young golfers
and instilling an interest and love for the
game at an early age.
Christensen said his large roster will allow
him to get several members of his team play
time this year.
“We will be rotating kids in and out of tournaments,” Christensen said.
Kids are limited to the number of tournaments they can compete in, so the depth will
help.
“They can only play in nine meets,”
Christensen said.
Not only is the roster large, there is a lot of
returning experience on the team.
Christensen said there are three seniors
returning this year. Garret Wamsley, Ryan
Birner and Brady Radcliffe have all been starters throughout their high school careers.
Junior Nate Dvorak has a lot of experience,
too.
At the sophomore level Connor Dormann and
Jake Burke also have a lot of experience.
“Connor (Dormann) will more than likely be a
number one or two this year,” Christensen said.
As for goals this year, the expectations are
high. Christensen said the team’s focus will not
be on the smaller tournaments as much as it
will be on the big three – districts, conference
and of course, state.
Christensen said Scottsbluff has historically
been the team to beat; however, he is confident
his team will be competing at a high level at the
conference meet.
“If the kids play like they are capable of
we will contend at conference and districts,”
Christensen said.
According to the coach they are shooting for
top 3 finishes at both.
As for state, he is shooting for a top five finish.
But, as he says, he doesn’t want to put the
cart before the horse and plans to take the top
three one at a time.
“We should be competitive at every meet, at
conference, and at districts,” Christensen said.
The Red Raiders kicked off their season on
Tuesday, March 22, at the North Platte Golf
Invite.
