Head coach Chuck Christensen said no other team in their district will have the depth the Red Raiders do. Christensen has been a part of Sidney Boys' Golf for 11 years. Two of the years he spent as the assistant coach, the other nine he has served as the head coach. Christensen credits the strong junior program at Hillside Golf yan irner Course for developing Sidney’s young golfers and instilling an interest and love for the game at an early age. Christensen said his large roster will allow him to get several members of his team play time this year. “We will be rotating kids in and out of tournaments,” Christensen said. Kids are limited to the number of tournaments they can compete in, so the depth will help. “They can only play in nine meets,” Christensen said. Not only is the roster large, there is a lot of returning experience on the team. Christensen said there are three seniors returning this year. Garret Wamsley, Ryan Birner and Brady Radcliffe have all been starters throughout their high school careers. Junior Nate Dvorak has a lot of experience, too. At the sophomore level Connor Dormann and Jake Burke also have a lot of experience. “Connor (Dormann) will more than likely be a number one or two this year,” Christensen said. As for goals this year, the expectations are high. Christensen said the team’s focus will not be on the smaller tournaments as much as it will be on the big three – districts, conference and of course, state. Christensen said Scottsbluff has historically been the team to beat; however, he is confident his team will be competing at a high level at the conference meet. “If the kids play like they are capable of we will contend at conference and districts,” Christensen said. According to the coach they are shooting for top 3 finishes at both. As for state, he is shooting for a top five finish. But, as he says, he doesn’t want to put the cart before the horse and plans to take the top three one at a time. “We should be competitive at every meet, at conference, and at districts,” Christensen said. Of the eight-member team, there are four juniors and one sophomore. Having that experience will help, said Storm golf coach Cyd Hanson. "All those kids, the ones back from last year, they've had some experience and that's helpful," she said. "You're more comfortable, going into that course it's not going in blind. They're kind of familiar with what things to avoid, and that helps." Brett Godfrey, a junior who made the state tournament as an individual last year, said having that experience helps. "I feel like, being the only senior, I took some advice from other seniors all by themselves and I'm going to use that this year," he said. McMillen said the team needs to shoot better than 380 to earn a state berth this year. McMillen said his short game is working well so far, while Godfrey said that is the area where he needs to put in additional work. Hanson said she gave members of the school's basketball team a little extra time after that season ended, but many members of the golf team have been getting work in before the first official practice began. "A lot of them came out when they didn't have to when the weather was so nice, and they came out and practiced on their own," she said. The Raiders opened last week at the Chadron State indoor meet, and open outdoors Thursday at home. "It's a new season. Everything starts over," Ganser said. "We return a good number of kids, some kids who medaled at state last year. We were able to finish the season really well, obviously. But, again, we start over. Our kids know that and our coaches know that, too. It's a whole new year." The Raiders return six athletes who medaled at state individually or in a relay team from a year ago. Jake Heeren finished second in the shot put a year ago, Alex Linneman took sixth in the 200-meter dash and Michael Banaszak finished ninth in the 400-meter dash. In relay events, the Sidney 3200-meter relay team finished second and returns one starter in Logan Uhlir. The 400-meter relay team, which finished fifth, returns three starters in Derek Rob, Banaszak and Linneman. The 1600-meter relay team won at state and also returns three starters in Banaszak, Hunter Secrest and Linneman. "But there's some other kids that didn't make it that I expect to see some good things from," Ganser said. "There's a kid like Mitch Porter. He didn't qualify. He was just a freshman, he'll be a sophomore this GO, FIGHT, WIN!!! 2!.$93!54/#!2% )LLINOIS3T3IDNEY.% year. We'll see what he can do in his jumps." "The other thing is that there's some good freshmen coming in. We're excited about our freshmen," the coach added. One area Ganser expects big things from this year is in the sprints. "If we look at the boys, we've got some good speed," he said. "I like what we can do in sprints. We do return some experience in distance and mid-distance, too. We want to be able to improve what we're doing in the field in terms of the jumps. That's important. And of course kids are a year older. That's always the best thing. We're anxious to see how much improvement they'll make in one year of their school to the next." The coach also said his team's experience will be a key. "There's good experience back," Ganser said. "We had kids that wrestled and played basketball...so they're coming in in good shape, and our kids that didn't, I think we had a good winter. We'll find out here in the next few weeks." Ganser said the team's goals include winning conference for the third consecutive season and finish the season strong. "Our boys have won the conference for two years in a row," he said. "That was the first time since 1970. Let's see if we can go after it again. Conference is big for us. We want to do well. And, obviously, come district time, qualify as many as you can and set yourself up for the following week. That's the main thing. You want to finish the season the right way." Beat ‘em, Raiders! "There's good experience back," the coach said. Senior Preslie Allen returns after picking up three medals at the state meet a year ago. She finished third in the 800-meter run and fourth in the 400-meter run, in addition to being a part of a 1600meter relay team that finished seventh. "Preslie Allen got three medals (at state) last year," Ganser said. "She got two in the opens and one in the relays, so huge. We kind of build our team around her a little bit." Also in individual events, Kelly Von Seggern is back after competing in the 100-meter dash at state. Where Sidney returns plenty of experience is in the relays. The Lady Raiders return all four of its competitors in the 1600-meter relay team that finished seventh at state last year. Those on that relay include Allen, Abby Heller, Genessa Schilz and Natalie Radcliffe. Also back is the complete 3200-meter relay team which finished 12th at state a year ago. Those Lady Raiders are Charlie Brockhaus, Julia Evertson, Kara Birner and Chantal Riggs. SIDNEY REHABILITATION & WELLNESS CLINIC DON’T LET A SPORTS INJURY KEEP YOU FROM COMPETING! All of our girls off the 4x4 relay, who medaled, are back," Ganser said. "So you're talking, besides Kelly Von Seggern, who was on a 4x1 relay and that medaled too, and there's two girls back off that. "With our sprints, there's some good things there. If you're talking girls, you'll be talking people like Genessa Schilz, Abby Heller and Natalie Radcliffe." The 400 meter relay also has two competitors back in Heller and Von Seggern. That team finished sixth at state a year ago. "We do return a lot of lettermen and we do return a lot of state medalists. That's a good thing," Ganser said. "The other thing is that there's some good freshmen coming in. We're excited about our freshman girls, a lot of freshman girls...In all honesty, we've got good kids. They're good to be around." Ganser said his team's goals include winning conference for the second straight year and getting as many as they can qualified for state. "Last year, our girls won the conference for the very first time. That would be nice to repeat," he said. "Scottsbluff is going to be really solid, but we want to try to do that." "I like our kids and I like our coaches. Our coaches work hard at it and our kids work hard at it," Ganser added. "Our whole thing is we want to be there on time every day, work hard, have fun, compete and win. That simple." Have a great season, Sidney Raiders! Sidney Police dePartment P.O. "Having returning state qualifiers and so many who got thirds at the district meet last season, we definitely have strength there," coach Jodi Craig said. "I am hoping they will tell the others how exciting competing in the state track and field championship is so they will strive to achieve that goal. The girls’ work ethics and persistence are assets as well." Returning state competitors for the Lady Warriors are senior Jessica Houk and junior Cheyenne Nickel, who both competed in the 4x400-meter relay a year ago. The Lady Warriors also return five seniors and four juniors.
