TITLE: Activation of software circuit-breakers on certain BSI electrical outputs of Bi VAN/CAN vehicles still in production. OBSERVATION / SUBJECT… : This note is only applicable (from December 2007) to Bi VAN-CAN vehicles still produced worldwide by Citroën: • Xsara Picasso Bi VAN-CAN (from software V25.00), • Berlingo 2 (from software BSI V24.00), • C2 China (from software BSI V45.00), • C3 Mercosur (from software BSI V45.00). REMEDY: Follow the procedure and explanations outlined in this document. Page 1 / 7 OBSERVATION The BSI software of Berlingo 2, Xsara Picasso Bi VAN-CAN, C2 China and C3 Mercosur vehicles will gradually be incorporating electronic and software circuitbreakers. NOTE: This function can be activated simply by updating the BSI software. These circuit-breakers, which can be re-armed a maximum of 9 times, protect the electronics of 10 BSI power outputs. There are two inhibition levels when the circuit is broken. • Temporary inhibition: When a short-circuit to earth is confirmed (intermittent or permanent fault), the defective output short-circuits (output inhibited) and a fault code is memorised permanently in the BSI. To re-arm the defective output (manual re-arming), follow the procedure outlined in the section "REMEDY / Procedure to re-arm one or more outputs". This re-arming can only be carried out if the inhibition is not permanent. • Permanent inhibition: Once a circuit breaker has been re-armed manually 9 times (temporary inhibition), subsequent confirmation of short-circuit to earth on the same output (fault memorisation), will short-circuit this output permanently and the “Internal fault on BSI computer: output not in service” associated with faults on the output(s) concerned will be memorised in the BSI. To resume normal operation of the BSI, follow the procedure outlined in the section “REMEDY / Procedure to re-arm one or more permanently inhibited outputs”. NOTE: The re-arming counter (number) per output can be consulted by means of the LEXIA/PROXIA tool (see section “Tool menus” in this document). ATTENTION: the addition of a power consumer to this line (adaptable trailer harness) can cause this fault to be indicated. - Control harness(es) and connectors (Vehicle, towing and trailer harness). - Lamp holder(s) (Vehicle and trailer). Page 3 / 7 REMEDY Procedure to re-arm one or more outputs: ATTENTION: - This procedure must only be carried out after the short circuit(s) have been repaired (re-arming maximum 9 times before compulsory replacement of BSI). If several faults are memorised at the same time, it is imperative to remedy them before starting the re-arming procedure (see section “Special case” in this document). - The displayed fault code(s) are memorised permanently even if the short circuit is intermittent. Therefore the circuit diagnostic must not be limited to searching for an permanent fault. IMPORTANT: For vehicles equipped with a towing harness, if a fault related to lighting/signalling is memorised, do not forget to test the towing and trailer harness. 1) Find the origin of the fault(s) and repair or replace the defective component(s). 2) With the vehicle at a standstill, switch off the ignition and close the driver’s door. 3) Open the driver’s door. 4) Switch the ignition on and off (without starting the engine). 5) In the next minute, simultaneously request operation of the front windscreen wiper and flash the headlamps. 6) Keep the controls activated for around 3 seconds until a confirmation signal is emitted by the audible warnings. 7) Check the operation of the previously defective output(s). Page 4 / 7 Procedure to re-arm one or more permanently inhibited outputs: ATTENTION: It is imperative to repair the memorised output fault(s) before replacing the BSI. To resume normal operation, the operations must be carried out in the following order: - Repair of short-circuit (Search for an outright or intermittent fault). - Replacement of BSI. TOOL MENUS Route to access the readout of BSI faults (Lexia and Proxia tools): • Global test • BSI • Fault readout Route to access the readout of re-arming counters (Lexia and Proxia tools): • Global test • BSI • Parameter measurements • Power supplies • Status of certain power outputs NOTE: The “Status of certain power outputs” menu will be available from CD41 for Berlingo 2 and Xsara Picasso Bi VAN-CAN vehicles and from CD42 for other vehicles. Page 5 / 7 SPECIAL CASE ATTENTION: Four outputs (see fault list below) controlled by the same electronic component have a particular function. If one of these four outputs registers a short-circuit to positive, no fault on the output concerned will be memorised in the BSI, however the other three outputs will be considered wrongly as being short-circuited to earth (memorisation of 3 faults and shortcircuiting of the 3 outputs). In this special case, ignore the three indicated faults and instead search for and repair the short circuit to positive on the fourth output (not listed in the list of BSI fault codes). Fault on the outputs concerned: 1) Front courtesy light fault - Danger: Short circuit to earth 2) Air conditioning compressor control fault - Danger: Short circuit to earth 3) Boot lighting fault - Danger: Short circuit to earth 4) Boot opening control fault - Danger: Short circuit to earth Example 1: The BSI shows faults 1, 2 and 3 => Search firstly for a Short-circuit to positive on the boot opening control circuit. Example 2: The BSI shows faults 1, 2 and 4 => Search firstly for a Short-circuit to positive on the boot lighting control circuit. Page 6 / 7 IMPORTANT: ATTENTION, if the vehicle is equipped with a trailer harness, the latter must be of Citroën make. Failing this, there is a risk that some BSI outputs may short-circuit temporarily or permanently (BSI not in service) after a trailer is connected to the vehicle. The original towing harnesses are equipped with power relays on the rear fog lamp outputs (only Xsara Picasso) and LH and RH sidelights outputs (all vehicles concerned by the note) to ensure that the BSI outputs concerned are not overloaded.
