Managing Project Goals through Value Engineering
ABSTRACT:
Construction for the three-story, 150,000 square foot New Student Center at NC A&T is underway. The student center
project experienced a value management process that challenged the owner, design team, and construction manager.
The design team tackled the challenge of maintaining the owner’s program and function requirements while maintaining
LEED and NCSCO sustainable and energy efficiency goals. Architectural changes were weighted against their impact on
the efficiency of the mechanical and electrical systems. From that analysis, changes were selected and implemented and
the project was brought to within budget.
In our presentation, we will demonstrate how NC A&T, Vines Architecture and RMF Engineering collaborated, evaluated
and reconciled every element in the project. We will also provide a project overview including a review of the buildings
function and unique design features. We will close the presentation with a question and answer portion and open
discussion on the experience.

Improving Indoor Air Quality While Saving Money
ABSTRACT:
UVC lights are being used extensively to keep biological growth off HVAC cooling coils. This helps reduce the spread of
mold, bacteria and viruses throughout the building. But the best benefit of installing UVC lights is that clean coils will
improve heat transfer, reduce pressure drop, and reduce air handling speeds, which can lead to substantial energy
savings. Up to 15% in some cases. And by keeping the HVAC system 99.9% disinfected, building owners will have a
dramatic reduction in maintenance of the HVAC system. Most owners NEVER clean their cooling coils again.

Focusing a Campus Investment Strategy
ABSTRACT:
Creating a focused facilities plan aimed at sustaining the future of an institution can be a daunting task. Wake Forest
University worked with Sightlines to first establish where they stood among their peers; then build a database of
information to identify 10 years' worth of facility’s needs. The end goal for Wake Forest was to bring evidence to finance
leaders of the need to establish a sustainable, forward-facing facilities plan. During this session facilities leaders will learn
the steps Wake Forest took to establish a clear need for this plan, and how they have begun to build buy-in from the
financial leaders at the University to start moving forward with the plan.

Bluethenthal Wildflower Preserve
Located on the campus of the UNC Wilmington, the Herbert Bluethenthal Memorial Wildflower Preserve consists of
approximately 10 acres of land set aside by the University’s Board of Trustees in 1973. Their action was in response to
an initial donation by Mrs. Herbert Bluethenthal of Wilmington in memory of her husband. The site chosen for the
Preserve includes a wide variety of plant communities which are representative of much of the greater southeastern North
Carolina region; visitors will find marked trails and benches at convenient locations and a pond created on site adds
another plant community. The Preserve provides habitats for many of the plant species which are native to this area. The
Preserve is dedicated to the preservation of the rich and varied flora of southeastern North Carolina and has been
designed to provide a place of contentment and pleasure for those who enjoy and appreciate our native plants.

Face Lift for Your Campus
ABSTRACT:
1. Realize there is a Problem with the Appearance of the Exterior of Campus Buildings
2. How the Problem can be solved
3. Results (Face Lift): Exterior Surfaces of Buildings are restored to "Like New" Appearance
BIO:
Rick LaCoste, founded New Restorations, a sole proprietorship, in Alabama and has been in business since 2001. After
graduating from Auburn University at Montgomery with a Bachelor Degree in Business, Rick found a way to change how
the conventional exterior cleaning is viewed without using pressure. He redirected his efforts towards one vision of
providing an efficient way to clean exterior buildings. Because pressure washing causes damage and defacing of new and
historical buildings, he listened to the unique needs of each client to provide a service without using pressure. He is
mission driven and customer oriented to provide a new and different way of exterior cleaning. He specializes in servicing a
need that had not previously been met without using pressure. New Restorations provides a service to restore exterior
buildings to a “like new” appearance using an environmentally safe solution (without high water pressure) which gently
cleans and restores the facility.

Currently he is the Supervisor over Zone 5, which consists of a little more than one million square feet of some of the
older buildings on campus. During his entire tenure on the campus he has always been over the elevator maintenance.
When he first got there the university had 56 elevators in service and now there are 135. Currently the university is going
through a 3 million modernization project that is working on 15 elevators and bringing them up to today’s standards. The
university is partnering with Inpro for the interior finishes, mainly for the durability, but also the aesthetics. David is a

actually came from Preston and his neighbor (another Inpro employee) who together helped shaped the path for the
pairing of Inpro’s durable and attractive products to elevator cab interiors. The project at UNC Charlotte is one Preston is
very excited to be a part of as he attended school there before transferring to UNC Wilmington and likes to see all of the
transformations to help breathe new life into the elevator cabs. When not working, you can find him in Charlotte with his
